I have a lens with a 86mm filter thread. How can I adapt this to a larger lens? I guess using a step down ring? Yet, not sure about vignetting, because it's a wide angle lens (Tokina 11-20 MFT lens)
@@knobi3760 You can always use rod mount. I haven't seen ring bigger then 82mm for Mirage. Although there might be 3rd party ones. I guess stepdown ring would introduce vingetting, if this lens is designed for mft only. If design is for FF or APS-C but just got mft mount, there shouldn't be vignette.
Great product review. I think you’re my favorite RUclips right now because of how unbiased and informative your videos are. Thanks for the video, Frank. Looking forward more of these!
Great review!! Thank you for taking the time! First video of yours that I watch. You seem very honest about how and why you review. I def. will be looking into more of your videos!! Keep up the good job!! 🙋🏻♂️🙏
I literally said the exact same thing. I only see the tilta video. Then I goin yours. You nailed it. I literally have the exact same set up fx3 zeiss 55 was debating on this matte box and the round filter part on the donut I was not aware of that’s a game changer! Thank you. Ordering now!!!
Thanks for your review. The ability to thread screw-on filters to the mounting rings is brilliant for all the reasons you state. I was considering the Polarpro Basecamp, but this feature alone made the decision a no-brainer. I don't think I'll use the motor feature, but have seen some videos showing interesting uses for it. From the videos I've seen, the Mirage filters have a yellow/green cast, but hopefully that can be mostly dialed out by resetting white balance after installing the ND filter. UPDATE 1/2/23: I purchased the Tilta Mirage matte box and like it very much. I ordered it with the VND filter, which works well, but also have two of the Vaxis IRND filters. The IRND filters are somewhat more neutral. The Vaxis filters are very light and affordable, so I'm quite pleased with this system. The only drawback to the Mirage mattebox is that lenses wider than 24mm tend to vignette. The Vaxis filters are 95mm, so it seems that Tilta could have made the Mirage less prone to vignetting. Maybe they will address that in an updated version that will hopefully be compatible with the Vaxis system.
The glass on a 4x5.65 isn't "wasted". It's there for larger format sensors and larger diameter lenses that are 114mm. Many of these smaller, lower budget matte boxes will vignette when on a wider lens with a large format sensor. For example, a camera capable of vista vision.
No doubt, you are 100% correct. However I doubt anyone using large format sensors or professional cinema lenses will be using this matte box. This , as well as the polar pro base camps are a consumer product that can accommodate small independent creators who are just starting out.
You have the face of an actor. Put on a camouflage suit in a war movie and you'd be the perfect candidate :) I'm convinced about this matte box myself, I'll get it for sure. Thanks for the review.
Man, you are on point with explaining the details.I guess You single handedly convinced me to go for tilta instead of polarpro. But I have one question. Is there a noticeable image quality issue interms of actual VND glass ?
Solid review, thanks a lot! I wanted to see how you adapt to different filter sizes but I got way more out of your video than just that. Very clear and straight to the point!
So I can throw on my tiffen glimmer glass 82mm on this 82mm ring that then connects to the matte box ? Great review my friend I’m definitely considering this and would love to see much more reviews from you
Thank you very much for this review. It’s great! Also thank you for showing that you can still use screw on filters. Speaking of which. If you already own a VND filter to screw on, will you still be able to turn it and change the stops while the matte box is attached or will it be blocked?
Pretty amazing you can get a vari nd with a motor for $600, thats what sold me on it. And I got it for the cyber monday deal for $509, really looking forward to using that going from inside to outside and vice versa. The Polarpro system looks nice but was going to be like $1500 with all the extras. I'm sure Tilta has more filters but I noticed you can get all 3 mist filters (1/8, 1/4 and 1/2) for less than a single Polarpro Mist filter ($65 each vs $199 each from Polar). And I dont think there is a way to easily motorize the Polarpro vnd.
I just got some additional accessories for this matte box today. I added the axis mist and blue streak filters. I also added an additional stage to the matte box that allows me to stack 2 of the round axis 95mm filters at the same time. I still haven't spent as much as the basic polar pro kit.
Could you share the product you put inside the Sony mic holder? My Rode mics are skinnier than the holder, and it's a pain every time I want to use it. Thank you :)
Very useful video for me. I have the sale lens, 55 mm from Sony. Can you please tell me what adaptor you use (49-67)? It cames with matte box or you bought it separatly? Maybe you can write me the link with exacte adaptor you use. Thank you!
@@TaskForceMediaGroup Got mine 2 days ago, there is a filter frame that allows you to install 2 filters at once (circular). But it's instead of VND. This is optional accessory.
@@Milan-cf1xe You can check my 3 part review of this mattebox. You can install two if you got additional tray for 95mm filters. I review this tray in one of the videos - part3.
The Tilta filters are actually not proprietary. Well, Tilta came up with them, but they got bot Vaxis and NiSi to make filters for it and you don't have to buy them through Tilta, while the PolarPro filters can only be bought through ... PolarPro.
Wonderful review! I got the PolarPro Basecamp with both 2-5 and 6-9 stops filters but aiming for this one now, only problem is this doesn't seem to work with Sony 200-600mm 95mm thread, but possible if there was any 95mm to 95mm ring! With a hack it's possible, not sure why the didn't go 114mm. Got an a7S III myself and that separation and need to go back and forth from 2-5 to 6-9 filters and backwards is painful, let alone blue shift accidents.
I might be wrong, but I think if your lens diameter is 95mm you can clamp the tilta Matte box directly to the lens. I’m pretty sure all the included adapter rings do is bring any other lens diameter up to 95mm.
@@TaskForceMediaGroup Problem is the 200-600mm G lens has an "inner" thread of 95mm, actually with PolarPro Basecamp 95mm to 114mm ring it's as wide as the lens outer diameter, so it's 114mm-ish. Only hack possible is 95mm offset ring, if there are any.
@@TaskForceMediaGroup I would still buy the motorized Mirage and keep the PolarPro for the 200-600mm. Mist, anamorphic, and other filters are so much cheaper on Mirage.
@@Bo_Hazem I tried it today on the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS lens. It did not fit this as well. The inner thread of this lens is also 95 mm. As you mentioned, need a 95 mm to 95 mm extension ring, which probably doesn’t exist. Oh well. Nice Matte Box, but I will send it back today :( Looks like Polar Pro will be the best option for the lenses I want to use.
Amazing review buddy! i think im gonna go the Vaxxis route because of the IRND filters since i use Blackmagic cameras haha (NO IR CUT) and i believe the vnd from tilta doesnt have IR cut correct?
Thanks for the useful information. Makes me want this mattebox! However, my sel1224g does not have a threaded slot to fit a filter. Will this mattebox and sel1224g fit?
Great video loved it a lot, I’ve got a question how convenient is it to change the ND density when it’s on the right hand side of the matte box and not on the left-hand side where you freehanded?? Thanks
The wireless motor actually drains the 14500 battery even when it is switched off - Tilta recommends taking out the battery whenever you don’t use the motor. They said they’re trying to fix this "quirk" with a software update in the future. What a disappointment :(
Hey! Has anyone had any experience using this with the 28-135 Sony zoom? 95mm filter thread, just not sure if the clamp works on the lens. Thanks if you have advice!
The title of your video shows, you have no idea, what you are talking about. You are right, Tilta Mirage is a great product and great value for money BUT with two serious limitations: Vignetting with lenses below appr. 22mm with stage 2 filters AND it does not realy support huge lenses with 95mm threat (I know there is an adapter but it causes vignetting as well) AND it does not support 114mm lenses. Both is no problem with PolarPro Basecamp. No vignetting at all and support up to 114mm lenses. For this I use simply both systems, Mirage for smaller lenses up to 82mm diameter and above 22mm focal lenth and Basecamp for lenses under 22mm and diameters above 82mm. Mirage mainly for traveling, Basecamp mainly for commercial jobs with clients due to its much more professional appearence and flexibillity.
So nice to have reviewers that aren’t full of themselves or trying to sell you something. Thank you
Fantastic overview! It is especially great seeing you adapt this to a smaller lens!
