So, it looks like they have fixed ND filters ready to go already.🤓🙌 Here’s a link: bit.ly/36Xoh1f You can get from 1 to 8 stops of fixed ND. Nice! Now we just need those circular diffusers! 👍
This looks pretty great! Agreed, now I just need to see if they can come up with both some Black Pro Mist and Glimmer Glass defusion and a way we can run it with ND honestly...
No filter: imgur.com/D7qbRc6 Polar Pro filter: imgur.com/s3gnYzg SLR Magic filter: imgur.com/nqbqBfb Was really unimpressed with the PolarPro Peter McKinnon VNDs. They had an uneven colour cast across the frame, with the right side of the frame skewing heavy towards cyan. You can't just do a custom white balance to corect, as it only affects half the frame and you'd then throw out the other side of the image.
How did Polar Pro manage to take something I hate using and make it more than tolerable? I swear they have a ninja note taker at everyone's projects and it reports to some robot at HQ. Sponsored and legit vid. Undone right. Thanks Gerald.
Hi, Gerald. Do you have any experience with the Aputure DEC Vari-ND or the DEC LensRegain? I'd LOVE to hear your opinion on them. If you're unfamiliar: Aputure DEC Vari-ND is an EF to MFT adapter (not boosted) + wireless follow focus + 9 stop variable ND, Aputure DEC LensRegain is an EF to MFT speedbooster + wireless follow focus.
Gerald as a filmmaker with aspergers and a touch of OCD, the thoroughness of your videos is the most satisfying thing. Really preciate' ya! MKBHD became the top and most trusted tech channel on YT, and I think you will become the top filmmaker gear review channel in no time. The most trusted, comprehensive, nothing left to be desired, the kind of reviews that make you go "i dont need to listen to anyone else". I am always astonished at the amount of work and care you put in to things!
You are good damn right! :) Every time I need to buy some new piece of film making kit (ND, tripod, lens, lights...) I go to Geralds channel and buy what he tells me to buy. And I was never been disappointed. I am very indecisive and he is bringing me peace of mind that I just made a good choice :) Except for Gerald and Marques, I need somebody for sports gear and maybe live choices and I will be happy :D
Great explanation of sponsorship at the beginning. I’m glad info on why multiple videos from multiple creators go up at the same time, is becoming more common knowledge. Fantastic walk through Gerald.
My guy, you are the most upfront, transparent guy talking camera gear on RUclips; not a knock against anyone else, but you're the only person I've seen talk about how they actually make money from product videos in relation to their testing. There's nothing I respect more than using your integrity to guide your wallet and not vice versa. I trust your opinion more than anyone else's, and you're my go to source of "nerd calibre" info for finding the proper information on purchases. I buy my gear based first on specs, followed then physical layout, and you offer completely unbiased, science based arguments of why certain formats, sensor sizes and methods of capture are more appropriate in different situations. It's actually provided me with a competitive edge when it comes to overhead and pricing in my market. BlackMagic, SmallRig, Panasonic and Sigma owe you some commission from me. So, from a fella working out in Western Canada, thanks a ton, sincerely. I'll be buying hella merch when I'm in the money. You're doing God's work, or at least Ansel Adams'.
You are like the dude back in the 90s working in a camera store and called Gerald the end-boss nerd that mostly knows everything about camera and stuff. Never subscribed to anyone but you are the first trustworthy person in that area. Keep going.
I just got the Summit in the mail and will give it a try shortly. Upon initial inspection, the build quality seems spot on and I like being able to apply CP with other filters easily. My only complaint is, LOL, the carry case. I wish it had a tad more room to store everything Summit related in one place and a way to attach it to a camera bag.
I was looking for EXACTLY this comparison, and actually just came from your review and comparison of the variable ND filters..... I think..... I think I love you. Always great videos, thanks for your hard work, definitely helped me to make a decision.
9:30 doesn't the color shift comes form the direction of the CPL as installed? Like if you would have changed its direction there is less or no color shift.
Will this matte box work on your lens if you have a diffusion filter screwed on to the front of it? Not having 2 trays is the only downside I'm seeing witth this system. Thanks.
For those who are interested: I just received my Mattebox and I can confirm that you can screw the Mattebox mount onto the Tiffen Black Promist Filter provided you got the 77mm or 82mm edition. This seems to be a decent workaround until Polar Pro releases their own Diffusion Filters.
Thank you for the video. I like fixed ND filters and until I saw your comment below, I was going to hold off. Now I have something to really think about. I like my Lee system, but this is something I am considering for landscapes. I am just pricing it out in my head and thinking long term is it worth purchasing it. If only I was able to use my current filters in this system then the decision would be easier. If I choose to go with it, I may have to run it by my budget director,....I mean my wife. Thanks again. Another quality video which I felt was informative and as usual, I enjoyed it.
Great vid, as always... My question is regarding black pro mist filters and the like. How would you include one to this kit? Is that possible with the proprietary filter restrictions?
@@geraldundone thanks for responding dude! Yeah, that's the biggest downside. As a DP, access to pro mist filter use is super important on most projects. It's a shame bc I'd otherwise jump all over this. Perhaps if they made their own version of such a filter.. Keep being awesome man!
Bocus Focus i think that should work unless the filtersize of the screwon filter is not bigger than the lens diameter and has a thread to put on the adapterring for the mattebox
@@bocusfocus9714 in theory, I suppose so, but one of the selling points of a mattebox is to be able to put on multiple filters so that when you switch lenses, the breakdown is minimal bc the filters are on the box, not the lens.
With the summit version it looks like it can hold two "drop in" filters and the circular but with the basecamp and the vnd it looks like there wouldn't even be space for a diffusion filter, or am i wrong?
polar pro has the BEST packaging of any product ive ever opened.. that includes Apple products.. loved my PMVND box its on display on my shelf its so good.
Great video! Ive got a Sony FS5ii. So, is this still a matte box worth considering since I have a variable ND built into my camera and what I really need is something to block light? What might be the benefit of going for the full kit? Appreciate your thoughts on that Gerald. Also, nice save when that camera slid.
You earned my sub earlier and now the bell! I understand making it on youtube is hard and accepting sponsorships is a good way to get started! You do it so honestly with disclaimers that it doesn't bother me at all!
Out in the landscape photo field would you miss having Medium Grads seeing how the Summit series only has soft ND4/ND8? Or combining the two softs with the fixed NDs generally solves that equation?
Can you put a filter before the 82mm mount for the matte box? Say put a pro mist filter on the lens, then the 82mm matte box mount and have the variable nd in the matte box?
You had me at closed system. Nothing I love better than a closed system. I am supper happy that you’re not paying more to get a closed system. There is that 👍
Would it be a bad idea, or just fine to use this matte box on a Pictor zoom lens that has a thin clear B+W protective filter on it? You would have to screw a step up ring onto the filter, then the thread plate onto the step up ring... too jank? Its a pretty light matte box, so maybe, right? Or too much risk of cross-threading? (I would be gentle and not screw it tight, of course.) I'd prefer a 95mm clamp ring, but the B+W filter would be in the way, right? I don't know... (DZOFilm Pictor zooms have 95mm front diameter and 86mm filter threads.) I could also use the Light Fly if I had to...
In the actual kit there is a 77mm and a 82mm "Thread Plate" included, my biggest lens uses 72mm so i could convert all my lenses to either size. Is there a reason to choose one over the other? Of should i just go to the 77mm because the step up rings are smaller/hopefully lighter/better to store, or do i miss out on something if i not go to the biggeer size of 82mm? Thank you very much btw for your indepth videos!
PolarPro say this on their website regarding the fixed NDs: "Hyper Neutral Through 1100nm Eliminates IR Contamination". From what I've seen, variable NDs seem to be pretty good at reducing IR as the two-polariser method attenuates all wavelengths more or less the same. It's generally much more of a problem with fixed ND.
Gerald: I wanted to know, if I rotate the whole matte box from the clamp, with the VND+CPL inside, would that work also as a stand-alone CPL? Like, say, the SLR Magic/ Simmod Variable NDs that also work as CPLs when you rotate them from the base?
Thank you for your video. How does Basecamp kit compare to NiSi or H&Y? With all the pieces to be connected, is there any light leaks? Can a grad be inserted on the Basecamp? Which of the two do you recommend?

Gerald, I wanna know the beahaivor of the reflactions and glares when using the polarized filter to change the exposure... is the polarization of the shot affected when you rotate the pl filter? Or does it only influence in the exposure affectiing the overall density?
Gerald, have you compared the Polar Pro Summit to the H&Y Magnetic Filter system? I have mixed feelings. H&Y uses Gorilla Glass III and Schott B270 optical glass for its polarizers. I likely will not hear from Polar Pro until Tuesday, so I have no idea if they use comparable glass nor do I know if either have color issues. Both companies seem to have nicely engineered systems.
Hi Gerald, Great review.... The mate box system have a lot of control premising circular CPL +ND , but I just wondered if there is an interest to have a second Polarpro PeterMcKInnon VND Mist, without mate box.. I read that the mist edition reduce a little bit the wrinkle for skin... for people filming fashion or beauty you think it's an interesting approach or only keep the VND with mate box... All the best
I assume that there's no polarising effect (reducing reflections on water etc.) when using the CPL and VND setup? I'd love for that to be controllable at the same time as the VND strength but I'm pretty sure that physics would have a thing or two to say about that idea.
Sucks! I just literally opened my kit and used it in Sta. Monica Pier and lost my CPL and its case didn't even get to use it, I can't even buy a replacement cause it's sold out. - I wonder if there's another CPL I can use as an alternative for this?
That's my concern too. If you need to switch products you have to buy all of your ND's again. Better to find one that can fit industry standard 4x5.6 ND's with empty filter trays you can leave on your glass. That way you don't keep touching the glass itself as you slide it in and out.
I was in the market for a filter system for GNDs and NDs. I tried Cokin and was unimpressed. I was pretty much sold on trying Lee. Then Polar Pro released the Summit System. Their timing was perfect. I was already a huge fan of Polar Pro's variable GNDs, especially for video. Their VNDs are super. 2-5 stop and 6-9 stop. No color shifts or cross-polarization. I was also impressed with their Quartzline CP filter. Again, no color shift. I decided to try the Summit System. I've now bought the complete system. I see some grouching about price. You really do in this case get what you pay for. No color shifts. They work with wide angles down to 16mm. They're made out of quartz glass instead of resin. That was critical for me. I wanted the highest quality glass in front of my lenses. Everything is well-designed. The Summit CP filter sits inside the frame. Everything is tightly sealed to avoid light leaks. I could not be happier with my decision to try the Summit System from Polar Pro.
Hey Gerald, I had a question about crop factors and their impact on f-number. If I use, say, an M42 lens that is f2.0 widest open, adapted with a dumb adapter to M43 camera, does it now become f4.0 at its widest open aperture? And in this case, a speedbooster's use will give me a f3.0 f number? Thanks.
Their PM ND filter still hasn't arrived in the UK. Nearly 6 months. BTW: A matte box doesn't have to be expensive to work perfectly. These are opportunistic.
I noticed you said you've tested bright tangerine and tilta. Any chance you can suggest what you didn't like about the others? I. On the hunt for a new matte box w BT on the top of the list. Need a swing away.
Just received my Basecamp Kit and the Polariser was broken - just fell straight out of it's metal ring. It was almost as though it wasn't glued in at all. Hope it's just an anomaly in their early production run. Have reach out to them and am hoping they replace it. Otherwise seems like a great product though. Thanks for the review.
I picked up the PolarPro Summit Filter Kit and I'm a little disappointed by the bags that came with the kit. There is a bag for the core unit with a side pouch for storing the step-up rings. The other filters each come with their own bag. Combine this with separate bags or containers for other variable neutral density filters and a circular polarizing filter... I end up with a collection of bags/containers to keep track of. I picked up the Filter Hive from ThinkTank to help manage it all, but it's not wide enough to hold the 100mm filters because of the tab. I really wish PolarPro offered a solution for this. Any recommendations or ideas for a solution? How do you manage/juggle all of your filters?
Gerald, on your rig in this video, what is that boxy-looking thing mounted on the rods, rear of the camera? Thanks for yet another irresistibly well-done video!
I like good packaging as much as the next guy, but I'd actually like to see reviewers starting to praise more efficient packaging. With that I mean, uglier easily recyclable packaging that is not only better for the environment, as it would be cheaper to produce, so that the manufacturer can lower the overall product price. Yeah, cool boxes are great, but after the unbox you just get a carrying case and the box just stays in the corner somewhere.
Gerald, first off thank you so much for all your super informative videos. In my opinion they are some of the best on youtube. As a total newbie to the idea of a matte box for my video setup I'm noticing that this one has no side flags. It that a problem or limitation in your opinion? Also do you think the "closed system" of Pro Polar only filters of this product is limiting in any way? Most of the other matte boxes can use third party filter inserts. And finally, what about the "swing away" feature on the rail mount that most other systems use to allow for quick lens changes? I guess it's a trade off of lens support vs. swing away convenience? Thank you for your time and for sharing all your knowledge.
Recommended by Gerald: ooooo this could be worth getting. Proprietary mount: oookay maybe not. Looks like a great tool, really high quality, but the closed system nature of it is pretty off-putting for the mean time... I'd want to see several generations of this to be reassured that they weren't going to come out with a slightly different mount each time. Definitely will be keeping an eye out for if they introduce a compatibility add-on.
I was thinking about that, but since they currently offer a complete range of VND and ND as well as supports and cover every front filter size, they almost don't really need to add anything to the system. Other than that diffusion filter! But once they add that, it might be a closed system, but it's a complete one. So I don't think we're really missing out. Just my two cents.
No, I meant for the size and purpose. Because you could make a smaller 4x4 matte box that has fewer features and which can't accommodate as many lens diameters for lighter, but it's not really comparable. But for any regular 4x5.6", 114mm matte box, this is the lightest, I believe.
Best review I’ve seen! Im wondering if the CP still acts as a polarizer with the VND? Could you theoretically rotate the whole matte box if needed? Also, do you have any thoughts on how well it cuts IR vs needing an extra IR cut screw filter
Solid info as usual and thanks for being so transparent about reviews. Is there any chance that you remember which video of yours was the one where you went into detail about the double qr’s? I am thinking about piecing together my first rail system and I’m really interested to hearing more.
Hi Gerald, Thank you for the great explanation. I have two questions I shoot most of videos on Sony A7III and sony lens for auto focus. If I use polarpro kit which is CPL & variable ND filter that will be two glasses in front of my lens will that effect the auto focus of sony lenses? Can i use only polarpro matte box and CIRCULAR variable ND filtter will that work instead of CPL&ND filter ?
What if you put a mattebox on a minorly scuffed up GVM RGB-150s? Also I found out that since the light itself takes power through XLR, I can use my XLR cables as extensions. This light is AWESOME a massive but totally very secret thank you for you 👐
useful review! Extremely well designed system, just a bit dissapointed propietary system to hold square filters. I would like to know if possible your table tripod it seems sturdy and reliable! trying to get one.
For that price, seems amazing. I am a bit nervous about the propriety filter system tho. With my Bright Tangerine Atom (Orginal) matte box, there is a vignette on wide lenses on full-frame with a Cordvision step-up ring, on the 80mm clamp-on ring . what's the widest lens youve tried? and did you see the edges of the matte box? Edit: after putting on a 77-82 mm step up ring, I dont think there is a vignette at 24mm. I cant tell for sure, because i dont have the 95 clamp down ring rn, but i faked it to see. so there's that lol.
Whats the name of your top loading manfrotto style plate? looking for a cheap buy less than 90 dollars. Also any thoughts on the Manfrotto nitrotech 8 Fluid head? looking to get a nice top loading fluid head as well
I caught other reviews of the same product, but you really covered this system better. I am looking at matte boxes and I found this video helpful, thanks 😊👍
Nice review! If I shoot both photos AND videos, which system would you recommend, if you can only pick one (either the Summit or the Basecamp) because of budget concerns? They are targeting the Summit at photographers and the Basecamp at videographers... I’m using the Fuji XT2 system btw...
hello, I already have the base camp kit. If I understand correctly I can buy a mist filter and put it in place of my filter without buying the third part. Is that ok?
Darn it Gerald, I just bought the dp500 last month and I love it apart from the front leaves little room for adjustment as I like to double up on quick release plates also so some of my lenses don't sit centre 🙄
Lol how many cameras did you have setup for this? Awesome review. Decided to buy it within the 7 day launch to get the discount. Super pumped for it to arrive. Been thinking about Matte Boxes for a long time and this looks like the first one that makes sense. Was nice meeting you at Pro Fusion too! Keep on crushing it
Thanks for the great review, will get one pretty likely soon. Do you have any idea if i can attach the Box to my Lens if there is a ProMist filter attached? Since i already own a set of those it would be sweet to continue using those.

Hi Gerald, hope you had time to read this. I'm curious: Which one is that tripod you use in this set up? Thanks for making such great vids!
What would be the best way to use a black pro mist filter with this setup? Thanks bro love your channel !
Sucks! I just literally opened my kit and used it in Sta. Monica Pier and lost my CPL and its case didn't even get to use it, I can't even buy a replacement cause it's sold out. - I wonder if there's another CPL I can use as an alternative for this?
"closed eco system" damn, what a miss.
Thanks.
Hi amazing video, I was wondering what mink tripod legs and head are you using here? Looks a lot like sachtler but is not
Thank you
Their PM ND filter still hasn't arrived in the UK. Nearly 6 months.
BTW: A matte box doesn't have to be expensive to work perfectly. These are opportunistic.
Could this filter system work on lenses that don't have a front filter thread, specifically the Sony 12-24 f4?
How do you manage/juggle all of your filters?
time fly listening to this man, I thought this was a 10 minute video
Gerald, on your rig in this video, what is that boxy-looking thing mounted on the rods, rear of the camera?
Thanks for yet another irresistibly well-done video!
I would like to love it. But no 4x4 or 4x5.65 support makes a Mattebox sensles for me using diffusion filter for creating a look.
Diogo Almeida Exactly.
Word
Could a diffusion filter go between the lense and the thread plate?
So if i get the circular vnd peter mc version, can i attach that to this matte box? No?
so is it possible to just use this mattebox without the cp / nd? or you have to screw the cp to mount the mattebox?
Do you know if Polar pro has done a infra red Filter for the base camp?
Could you use this on lenses with an extruding barrel? e.g. Canon 24-70 2.8
Yeah the closed system is a real downside.
When you say the "lightest in its class" does that mean there are others for probably much more money that are significantly lighter?
No, I meant for the size and purpose. Because you could make a smaller 4x4 matte box that has fewer features and which can't accommodate as many lens diameters for lighter, but it's not really comparable. But for any regular 4x5.6", 114mm matte box, this is the lightest, I believe.
@@geraldundone Ah, I see! Thanks so much.
Best review I’ve seen! Im wondering if the CP still acts as a polarizer with the VND? Could you theoretically rotate the whole matte box if needed? Also, do you have any thoughts on how well it cuts IR vs needing an extra IR cut screw filter
did you figure out if the polariser works as a normal polariser too when used with the vnd?
Solid info as usual and thanks for being so transparent about reviews.
Is there any chance that you remember which video of yours was the one where you went into detail about the double qr’s? I am thinking about piecing together my first rail system and I’m really interested to hearing more.
Can you use the grad filter in the Basecamp?
@Gerald_Undone Does the summit kit come with adapters for lenses with front threads larger than 82mm?
Hi Gerald, Thank you for the great explanation. I have two questions I shoot most of videos on Sony A7III and sony lens for auto focus. If I use polarpro kit which is CPL & variable ND filter that will be two glasses in front of my lens will that effect the auto focus of sony lenses? Can i use only polarpro matte box and CIRCULAR variable ND filtter will that work instead of CPL&ND filter ?
You literally read my mind. Thank you for doing this one.
What if you put a mattebox on a minorly scuffed up GVM RGB-150s?
Also I found out that since the light itself takes power through XLR, I can use my XLR cables as extensions. This light is AWESOME
a massive but totally very secret thank you for you 👐
What about sigma 85 art, how to fit in this matebox because this lens has 86 of diameter... also its possible use other filters like pro mist?
have you tried Kase's wolverine magnetic kit?
Does this actually provide polarization if the polarizer is behind the ND?
useful review!
What about the lee and nisi filter system?
Would this work on the original xeen lenses? Those are 114mm in front. Thanks!
Has the opton to add barnk doors at the side?
How do you know if you are pushing past the 2-5 variable nd as the adjustment wheel just spins round?
Whats the name of your top loading manfrotto style plate? looking for a cheap buy less than 90 dollars. Also any thoughts on the Manfrotto nitrotech 8 Fluid head? looking to get a nice top loading fluid head as well
Gerald, what is the gear you have installed in the Komodo? thanks, great video.
I caught other reviews of the same product, but you really covered this system better.
I am looking at matte boxes and I found this video helpful, thanks 😊👍
What's the widest lens (in Full Frame) that can be used on this matte box?
You could probably say this as an intro " I am light and I am going to devour your sensor" great video as always!!
Nice review, man! Question, how do you know what stop you're on if there are no markings?
Nice review! If I shoot both photos AND videos, which system would you recommend, if you can only pick one (either the Summit or the Basecamp) because of budget concerns? They are targeting the Summit at photographers and the Basecamp at videographers... I’m using the Fuji XT2 system btw...
hello, I already have the base camp kit. If I understand correctly I can buy a mist filter and put it in place of my filter without buying the third part. Is that ok?
Darn it Gerald, I just bought the dp500 last month and I love it apart from the front leaves little room for adjustment as I like to double up on quick release plates also so some of my lenses don't sit centre 🙄
what about a variable electronic matte box, think I saw something at ces
Great. So just in term of image quality (only Variable filter), which is better polarpro: vnd peter mckinnon or this basecamp? which one should I buy?
nobody can help me?
Lol how many cameras did you have setup for this? Awesome review. Decided to buy it within the 7 day launch to get the discount. Super pumped for it to arrive. Been thinking about Matte Boxes for a long time and this looks like the first one that makes sense. Was nice meeting you at Pro Fusion too! Keep on crushing it
Hi Gerald, can you please review the 100$ mattebox from Tilta?
Really hope they come out with filters equal in quality to the black pro mist! Would be a shame otherwise as I use the pro mist a bunch
Thanks for the great review, will get one pretty likely soon. Do you have any idea if i can attach the Box to my Lens if there is a ProMist filter attached? Since i already own a set of those it would be sweet to continue using those.
