dude that quick cut to "Hey I'm Tommy" was hilarious.
Lowell Productions yeah it was funny :)
Also Tommy mentioned some flicker with the old SL's. Any experience on the new VL's on this?
@@grad-dd9zj That was only early versions which are probably out of circulation at this point (at least if you're purchasing from a reputable retailer). I've got three SL60w's and they're all good at 120fps.
That hole for umbrellas is genius actually. Umbrellas are cheap and take up basically no space, so a fantastic alternative to softboxes. I have used the SL200 for a year soon, and I have been really pleased with it, no fan noise to complain of. Nice to see improvements have been made anyways.
Finally a video on these! Very happy with my Godox lights!
Now I’m convinced, the VL150 is my first ever, key light to buy without extremely breaking the bank. Thanks for this awesome, informative video.

I picked up a Godox VL150 and a LAOFAS softbox because of this video. Thanks Gerald!
On the strength of your review, I just recieved my new VL150 to supplement my 120d ii and can't fault the light it produces. Yes, the cables that come with it are a little on the cheap side but the actual light itself, the yoke etc are superb !
Thank you man, I made my purchase based on your valuable review 👍👍👍
Hey Gerald, your videos are excellent, including this one. Superbly done!
This is the moment that I became a sub. This was just what I needed. Thank you!!!
Great video Gerald, and just as I was about to pull the trigger and finally purchase some Aputure lights. More thinking to do I guess... 🤔
I've spotted quite a big temperature difference between Aputure and Godox. Warmer temperature with Aputure and colder, more natural with Godox.
Amazing review! I love my Aputure lights, but these also look great!
Gerald, this has just stopped me in my tracks. I have spent a few days reading and watching ahead of upgrading my studio lights. I'd pretty much settled on the 120Dmk2 and a 300D mk2. Naturally i would prefer more but the cost is a factor in what is challenging economic times.
These units look ideal!. I have a couple of LS1s, a boltzen 55w spot ( ace to use) and five GODOX SL60w but when all the 60w's are on theres a shed load of noise especially when they are upto 90%-100% brightness.
Only issue here is… UK availability! Not sure if there are problems but there seems to be very little UK/EU stock of these whereas they are abundant in the US and other nations. Will have to wait until the supply chain hits the United Kingdom.
Thanks again Gerald for another great video and you did convince me to go for the ATEM MINI!
You can find them on Amazon mate :)

AlexTrinder hey Alex, my error. That’s you for the link. I was searching for FV instead of VL! Ordered a 150 to try out before replacing the other lamps. Quite excited actually!
Great comparison, great video, great options! 👊🏻😎
Hey Gerald, can you revisit these lights and go into more detail about the light output on each one of these units? I don’t know which unit I should grab and I think that would really help me with my purchasing decision
Gerald, great review. It would be great to see a head to head of the Godox with the Intellytech X100. I've asked Intellytech to send you a unit and they may well be in touch shortly.
You are fantastic. Thank you very much ;)
Do you have a review of the SL200 Mark II planned? Looks like it's coming out soon and if it fixes the problems of the mark I it would be an obvious choice for me to buy.
Godox UL150 & UL60 is the best today.
The VL150 seems perfect for a home youtube setup, but I still don't understand the advantages/disadvantages between these COB lights and LED panels. You can get some very nice panels for the VL150's $400 these days, many with RGB options.
Greetings from Russia!) Thanks for overview, enjoyed your info as usual!)
Awesome video! Just purchased one thanks to your video! Quick question though.. It seems that from your side by side comparison, the Aputure 120D MkII was 'warmer' than the Godox VL150. What's the best way to 'warm' the Godox 150 to match the Aputure?
Hey gerald what's your thoughts about the falconeyes lps 150t ?
I read at their website that it has a 18400 lux at 1m and a 96 cri so i'm thinking about buying it or the godox sl-150w, so which one do you recommend ?
Now I get why the Godox SL60w is out of stock everywhere.
Hey Gerald please do a video on 1000w halogen lights which is a small tube like and it is used for continues shooting
Aputure lights look warmer in the comparison.
Do we get battery power controller with light itself, VL150 in $400 or have to buy separatly?
Were the lux measurements done with bare bulb?
I have the SL 200, using it for photography, and wonder if I should upgrade for the brighter lights.
Thanks - great vid. Any flickering issues?
I almost clicked off when you pronounced it God-Ox, but I’m glad I stuck around, great informative video!
That's the correct pronunciation.

I watched like 5 videos on their channel, and 4/5 were Go-dox, and only 1/5 was God-ox, but I'll get over it, like I said still a great video
It’s like watching Chris Pratt/ Conan O’Brien/ Joel Edgerton give reviews on gear lol
I was just about to buy a SL60... now I need to go back to overthinking for a couple months

buy it. it's great. don't get caught up in the "look at these new lights. go out and buy them" hype. the SL60W isn't as loud as many reviewers claim. I've had it for about a year, and it's still super quiet.
Great video and just at the time when I was starting to look at this type of light :)
"shallow depth of field intro" was gold!
I knew you were watching videos about videomaking! Back to the woodshed with you :)
Go dox or God ox?
Its pronounced Go Dox not God ox

I vouch for this
I think that's illegal. Not sure how but i wouldnt aha
Carole will most probably sue him for this😂
I bought the vl300 less than a year ago and have had to take it in for servicing twice after light use. I asked the guys at the store I bought it from and they said they’ve had a few people have issues with that light. The light is awesome when it works, and is probably great for at home use, but when I’m shooting a video with clients and actors etc I can’t afford to have an unreliable light. Wish I had gone with aputure.
same story with my VL200
You & Caleb Pike are doing fantastic work in this space. The two of you have what I would consider the "full package": Knowledgeable, charismatic, detail-oriented, and proficient at communicating your thoughts clearly. It was this video that got me looking at the Godox VL150, and it was this video that had me pull the trigger on two. Thank you!
After month of use, are you happy with your purchase ?
@@bilelsouid Very much so. Use them almost daily and love them.
Are you shooting them through a soft or octobox? If so what sort of aperture and shutter speed do they perform at?
@@3DPrintingNerd How's the fan noise at 50% or 100% in your opinion?
@@stillsixstudios I'm usually running them at 85% to 90% and the fan noise isn't something I can notice.
Grabbed the VL 150 and the Soft box from the links- thanks for all the awesome videos Gerald! You’re a great resource for me as I try to improve my video quality....and the humour is top shelf:)

My FV200 is my go to above like 10 others right now. If you had to choose just 1, would it be the FV150 or VL150? I’ll be picking up a VL200 ASAP to see which I like better.
I love my Godox SL60, my unit isn't loud and the only thing missing is a battery mount
Yup, I have that one too. I wish I had spent a little more for the version with a batter mount.
I'm just glad these one can do both battery and ac on the same unit
You can also replace the fan with a quieter one made for tower PCs.
The SLB60 gives you the same battery/housing as the AD600 strobe! That's what I use as my main travel light.
I love mine too! I just connect it to an inverter and boom, battery power
Am I the only one who felt Aputure has tendency to green tint whereas Godox has more pink tint? You mentioned at 3:37 "CRI isn't everything" - that's true! I even thought Godox has more natural skin tones than Aputure in comparison.
I think these VL lights are more neutral than the SL. The latter was definitely magenta-tinted and the 120d looked a tad green.
I am about to upgrade from sl60 to vl150 and one of the main reason is the magenta tint to everything. Hoping the vl will be a tad more neutral
@@DaveMajor Let me know because I want one!
@@Hexspa hey, I just got back to my studio and did a v quick side by side test on the vl150 and the sl60 i set both to 100% and then adjusted the camera exposure settings. (with 90cm softbox FYI)
The vl150 I had to shoot at iso 100 and f4 to get it exposed properly (middle grey 41 IRE)
with the sl60 I had to change to 2.5 to get it exposed correctly again
There is 'less' of a magenta hue to the vl150 but I didn't properly WB. If I took care and got it dialled I think it would defo reproduce skin tones more accurately.
I bought the light from Amazon and had a discount voucher of 6% so got it for £350
But it came with barn doors, coloured gels and 4 colour cards. So now the SL60 can be used with those for more interesting ambient lighting and hair lights etc while saving the vl150 for my key light.
If you can afford it and get it with some of the added extras then I think it's a great buy (the other option was a gvm motorised slider but glad I went with this instead) especially if you have an sl60 already.
@@DaveMajor Far out. Didn't know you played drums, that's cool. Have you used the VL in a video yet? I don't have the SL, just some Lusana Studio ones from eBay. I use the xrite video passport to help with color.
Sooo excited to get my hands on these lights. Stellar review Gerald!
Wow, what a fantastic review! Wish more people knew their shit as well as you do and know how to give a proper, informative review! Thank you, this was so helpful for me!
There is a clear colour difference between the Godox and the Aputure lights (Skin tones primarily). I am not sure whether they are match-able or if it is so so simple as a kelvin adjustment.
If anybody would be able to answer (having tried both) that would be amazing.
Great comparison by the way.
Daniel
I own both the Aputure 300D mk II and the Godox VL300. To be honest, the bag that comes with the Aputure does feel premium. Other than that, I think the set up time of both are similar and the output light are both great. Your review helped me on buying the Godox instead of getting a second Aputure.
I think having multiple Aputures for a set is just so much better. The APP and reliability on their own is worth the premium.
Can you compare these godox new LEDs with Nanlite? Their Forza 60 and Forza 300, can easily compare with aputure 120d ii and 300d ii. And they are cheaper. I was wondering how they perform in comparison with godox new LEDs.
Have you reviewed Nanlite products? Would love to get your thoughts on those 🙏
Can you please say: "I'm Gerald Undone and I'm not dangling dirty like in my last video" - Cheers!
Thank you for saving me a lot of money!
I’m going to get the vl150 instead of a second 120d.
Awesome review!
how is it ? was a good choice ?
Hi there, have you looked at the nanlite Forza 60/300 & 500. They seem very good. What do you think.
Shaun Clark interested
Finally... someone reviews the VL-150!!! I've been talking about this for weeks and been waiting for a review!!!!!
I was belittled for posting "where are the VL300 reviews" on reddit. I don't understand why this is the ONLY video actually talking about the product. Bizarre
Now the search begins for a review of the VL-200
Love the content as always! Gerald: was it just me or is there a magenta shift in the godox lights? Would one be able to match these lights (Aputure and Godox) in the same shot without using gels? Asking for a friend that already has an Aputure 120d mkII and is heavily considering getting a VL150 too... 🧐
Intersting. In the light comparison test, on my iMac, the Aputure lights all look a bit "warmer" to me. Only a slight shift, and i guess easily fixed in correction.
@@timbeaton5045 Yeah, Aputure's lights seem more natural-looking on the skin to me, but Gerald even said the Godox are more color accurate? I know things can be matched in post, but since I have to live stream a lot these days, it would be good to know of a way to match them up live.
Yeah I felt the same way. It would be interesting to see the shooting settings? Were they color'd the same exact way in post? I was very intersted in the godox but If that magenta shift is real (OR even worse: the magenta was pushed in post to compensate for the Godox pushing more green then I'd be more like to get the aperture). Also you can spot the purple background being warmer on aperture shots. Not sure if that light is affecting the BG purple he hits it with or it's being warmed in post
I use the Godox SL-60W, and mine has a definite magenta cast. It's subtle, but there. I took a white balance shot with the light and used that as my custom white balance in camera. Helped get rid of it.
Is it me or does the Aputure actually looks warmer in comparison to the Godox? The Aputure also appears to have a slight green shift.
Hey Gerald, great video!
Any possibility (if you still have the lights) of testing the aputure fresnel 2 with the Godox lights? Thanks!
So glad I saw this. I was actually going to order a 120D MKII tomorrow!
This is definitely a fantastic product, I wish these lights came out 3 months ago. However, you may want to check out Potato Jet's review of the 120D MKII first, because he covers some small improvements on the construction that may be better in the long run than the Godox light.
I have a 120d ii.Its a decent light but I hate the grean/yellow tint it has.I need to add a minus green gel to get rid of it.Im going to sell mine.
I ageed with this video until my VL 150 caught on fire on a shoot and then burnt a small spot on my rug. Less than 2 years old barely used. Maybe 50 uses.
I like the nanlite forza lineup. I think you should check them out aswell!
Yep! Awesome lights. I got the Forza 300 and received the Forza 60 as a bonus. Crazy good deal!
@@AndreiLucaa How are they on the fan noise in comparison to sl60w or aputure?

Hey Gerald, for the Godox VL 200 and 300 I noticed it has a set up for 2 V mount batteries. Does it need both in order for the light to work full power? Thank you in advance!
"as good or better in pretty much every category"
I'm curious about this statement. If you ignore the sidus link app vs godox app (there is no comparison, godox's app is very poor), then i think i would agree with you. However there is one issue:
You mentioned very quickly the aputure fresnel. Can you please show a side by side comparison of the aputure 120 and vl series with the aputure fresnel 2x and spotlight mount? Both the aputure fresnel and spotlight mount require a specific distance of the COB inside the attachment to work properly. If that distance is not meant, then the fresnel 2x and spotlight mount are not going to work. In that case, the extra ~$300 more for the aputure 300 vII would be a huge selling point.
I was going to ask the same thing. Can you use the fresnel and leko mount? That's the main reason I would use a COB lights right now.
“Hey I’m Tommy” cracked me up. Thanks for this awesome review, Gerald!
Picked up 2 VL150 and it seems like they are impossible to dim lower than 10% brightness wirelessly. Neither the app nore the remote goes any lower, even though the control box goes down to 1%. Have I missed something, otherwise this is a rather annoying flaw I'd expect you to pick up on.
Any flicker, especially at high frame rates?
That's just what I was wondering. Flicker seemed to be an issue with previous Godox models, which is why I was holding out for an Aputure. Hopefully, Godox has fixed that problem.
I've been split between getting one of these or the nanlite for ages now
Just take my money! 🤣👍🏼 I literally just dropped my aperture studio light and it broke. These look pretty awesome and I think they will work great for my studio set up. Thanks Gerald! 🎥🎬
Man you dropped and broke your aputure light just to buy these... I don't think that was what he was going for.
Joseph Rotoni I didn’t brake it on purpose lol... just a studio accident... I have insurance for the light so I think I can get a brand new one for free but these are cheaper and I think I may get some of these to have as well 🎥🎬

@@JaredMagers haha yeah man I was totally being sarcastic. I was wondering if I'd get you to bite though lol.
Joseph Rotoni Haha I was wondering if you were being serious or not. I bit 🤣👍🏼
@@JaredMagers haha well I appreciate the laugh in these times especially! Thank you. Have a good one and let me know how that light works out. I think I may go for the VL150.
Hmm, I can’t understand how the Godox VL150 comes in 5645k and the Aputure is at 5800k. The Aputure light is clearly warmer in your comparison footage. And I have to say that the Aputure’s color rendering is much more pleasing to my eye. I noticed you didn’t mention the R9 value. That may be the reason why your skin looks much more natural in the comparison shot. Also another thing I’d note is that the larger COB is a disadvantage for most filmmakers, since a hard light is hard because traditionally the burning filament is a tiny source giving it very hard shadows on just about any subject of any size or distance. This is preferred because it makes the light much more cut-able with barn doors, close flags, scrims etc.. How about flicker on the Godox?
I still think the Aputure is a much more professional piece of gear, justifying the price difference. BTW, I don’t own either. I use the NiceFoto 3300B, which has several shortcomings but is a great bare bones option. I can’t stand that hanging control box on all of these Aputure and Aputure clone lights. It’s such an awful cumbersome design that has no convenience value when you’ve already got a remote.
Thanks for the review. You have a great channel, and your videos are very nicely done. 👍🏻
The Godox lights seem to be a bit cooler in regards to color temperature IMO.
Something a gel can fix.
@@Newtperc It would be interesting to know what camera he was filming on. I know he has a few different rigs.
@@pahwraith At that point gel would begin to cut the light output down and it would no longer be more powerful than the Aputure.
@@Newtperc I'd not want to gel my light if I don't have to. The least amount of steps to the process the better!
@@GlenReed
But I don't necessarily see it as a deal breaker, that's all I'm saying.
I would love to see a followup on these Godox lights as nearly HALF of the ones I purchased have failed within 6 months.
I don't blame you, but there certainly should be some sort of follow up and accountability as you undoubtedly influence many purchases.
If nothing else, help people understand that companies like Godox are financing the next gen of products, by selling unproven models to early adopters. The second gen of these lights fixed all the issues that screwed over people like me. Understanding where a company is in the production cycle of a product is now ESSENTIAL in making smart purchases.
Granted, this scumbag business model is nothing new; Blackmagic Design used it to grow early on. The first gen of Apple products used to be infamously bad, but now nearly every manufacturer adopts this "figure it out later" model.
Thats my Two Cents. Thanks for all you do Gerald.
Wait, did I really hear you pronounce the company name CORRECTLY as "God Ox"? Dang, you really do know what you're talking about!
For a little background to my comment, the company's name in Chinese, 神牛, can literally be translated as "Holy Cow" or "Sacred Cow," neither of which would be too appealing to the outside world. They somehow came up with "God Ox" instead, which most consumers and RUclipsrs (here's looking at you, Robert Hall) run together as "Go Dox", which seems to me a terrible idea with a few exceptions for those that really deserve a good doxxing.
In current Chinese parlance, 很神 ("godlike") is often used as a superlative, to marvel at someone's excellence. It's also taken on the role as a modifier, as in 神准 ("incredibly accurate" or "spot on"). Yes, the ancient language of Chinese is quite adaptable and vibrant in our world today!
OHMYGOD i would've never found out if i wasn't reading the comments while watching this video
This is actually incorrect. My friend Rob Hall and I spoke to the owner of Godox and a sales rep who said it is pronounced "goh-dox". The company originally did have the "godlike" meaning attached but then shifted away from religious meanings for business purposes.

I'm probably buying the VL150 off the back of your review Gerald
Take a look at the nanlite forza 60, 300, and 500! They are incredible alternatives to Aputure at a cheaper price. I also believe that are better in a lot of ways.
Lol just got 2 VL300's for $100 less than the 300D MK II. I am pumped to say the least!
I noticed you look to the right to get undone. Do you look to the left to get done?
Almost forgot - I must say, all of your videos are super-informative, but this is a real nugget of a video, for my needs. Thanks very much!
I picked up a VL150 and the Laofas softbox a while back and while the light has been great, I'd personally advise against the sofbox. Mine fell apart after only a handful of uses. I recently picked up one of the new Smallrig softboxes which are similarly priced and it seems MUCH more robust.
I was considering the FV300 and 150 but now you get me thinking since you said fan noise could be a concern. How loud would you say the fan noise is? compared to the Aputure 120d? or the other ones? is it a deal-breaker?
Newer to this channel. Enjoying your thorough reviews. I’m definitely eyeing up a Godox VL150.
can you make a video about their newest Light to one it has a by color and the c o b light
Damn. I jest had my mind made up on aputure 300d ii until I saw this video. Now I’m back to square one on deciding what to get.
I would have liked to see someone test this against the Genaray Powerhouse. That thing was considered much more powerful than the Aputure 300 and is sold for $ 700.
Daniel Villiers i have that light and tbh it’s not as bright as I was expecting. The build quality isn’t great either.
Have you ever tried the Nanlite Forza series?
I'm wondering the same thing!
Hope you can review the forza 60 and 300 cob
Hey Gerald, I know you're a stickler for accuracy. It's pronounced "goh-dox". Not "god-ox". Just thought to share.
It's not actually. I pronounced it correctly. Learned the pronunciation from the company themselves.
Gerald Undone it was at one point pronounced that way years ago, but no longer isn't. My friend Robert Hall and I went to PhotoKina in 2018 and spoke to both the main sales manager and owner of Godox who both said it's pronounced "goh-dox" now.
Hi Gerald, have you tried the Pixapro Led100 MIII? They are pretty similar to the Apurture ones but cheaper. They also have the Led200 MIII rated at 15.000 lux at 1m. I haven’t tried the latest though.
Also wondering how they compare to Pixapro led100 miii
Can you put on a 7-inch grid on these Godox reflectors?
Gerald, I saw your video several times and I used your advices and get the VL150 - and I don't regret it. Thanks very much for your work. I'm your fan - and I'm not a fan of quite anybody :) ....
A very important question. I had the problem, that it didn't hold the weight of the softbox with a previous version. Does it hold without tilting the light?
Yeah, no problems with these ones.
Hey Gerald, great video, I'd like to use your Godox VL300 Amazon link because you influenced the decision to buy and I love the channel but the link's down
