I love the first fight with Thor. Not only do they perfectly build him up as a terrifying, formidable presence since the first game - they completely subvert your expectations by having him chill with Kratos for a minute. Even during that scene, he's such an intimidating aspect. You feel legitimately threatened by him and Odin showing up at the house. And then, when they fight - Kratos doesn't just lose. I especially love the cutscenes throughout. Thor know he'll heal eventually, so he lets himself get hit if it means potentially scoring an extra blow. He feels like a mountain with his strength and size.
i like the way thor tries to be calm and slow in the beginning. he and odin are really like a dark mirror to kratos, atreus (and grandpa zeus) in terms of manipulation and giving in to your worst instincts.
Zeus is a irresponsible, Coward and Straightforward narcissist God while Odin is manipulative, Cunning, relentless seeker and giver wisdom that will sacrifice any of his friends and family just to seek the future
Bit of a reach here, but I feel like Thor isn't really gone. He's the only God killed in this game and in 2018 who just simply disappeared. No corpse, just evaporated. Baldur, Magni, Modi, Heimdall, hell even Odin himself you see their bodies when they die. I like to think it means something and haven't seen anyone else talking about that.
Odin's reaction to his family's deaths in the first scene told me all I needed to know about him. Didn't care in the slightest about Magni & Modi, and even insulted them in front of their grieving father. All because they weren't that competent. Baldur is a different story, despite the fact that he was a sadistic psychopath. He was competent, that's all he cared about.
He chastised Kratos for killing his “tracker.” Not even bringing up the fact Baldur was also, you know, *his son.* Says all you need to know about him before even learning about his motives
Maybe I’m just making this a stretch, but I like how Odins two ravens in the beginning are doing different tasks. Ones watching the scene intently, while the other is looking around and scouting. Shows that odin really isn’t taking any chances with this situation

I'm glad to see how much we're relating through my note on here, and how so many go through such a terrible ordeal. Yet we've all had the strength to come out on top and see through such dark times. That's a mighty inspiring thought.)
Im so glad I dont have the drinking gene. I tried alcohol a few times. Ima be honest, I dont feelmuch from it. I like the taste of beer, but that's about it.
I have to say. I LOVE the way this opens up. Last game Atreus has the dream about Thor showing up. And its this big deal and a big fight seems to be just a hair's breadth away. Lighting and thunder and the whole high noon standoff thing. Turns out, Thor just wants to talk and even brought the drinks. That is how you subvert an expectation. Granted it all goes to hell anyway, but we all knew that was gonna happen. No way it wasn't. But that calm before the storm is just amazing to see.

Look at how Odin slams the mead in front of Thor as if encouraging him to drink. And then when Thor doesn’t he takes it away from him and takes a sip disappointed. Then he immediately says “ur no fun anymore” while waving the cup implying that he should drink again. These are the details you only notice while playing the second time through, after understanding the characters. Great attention to detail!
That is so subtle, but it is genuinely one of the most awful things I think I’ve ever seen in a game lol. His own father shoving this addiction in his face the way you dangle a carrot in front of a horse to make them walk. Odin couldn’t care if a drunk Thor would brutalize his own children as long as he listens to his orders.
They made Thor a shockingly deep character, a tragic character. You can see just how ashamed he is of himself, and how stressed and depressed he is throughout the game. You can tell he wants to rebel against Odin, but doesn’t due to Odin’s manipulation. And that moment you realize Sif isn’t talking about Atreus, but she’s talking about Odin
That subtlety in the beginning of thor just sniffing the mead and not drinking, hinting to his former alcoholism and that he's trying to better himself
And then Odin pushes a drink in front of him and when Thor refuses it he claims “you’re no fun anymore” then downs the two in front of his son shows how cruel and abusive he is to the core
@@youknowwhoiam2771 oh, I took the drinking as a sort of badass, I'm here, im in control, shut up and listen Like a mafia boss waltzed into your home, striking up friendly conversation, while casually drinking your cup you had prepared for dinner, without asking, just looking you in the eye I wonder if it's multifaceted now, that would be very Odin
@@Zoologically_Explained ah yes, because my first impression never changed as I got further into the story, such a concept would be madness abhorrent to the human mind To dumb it down, that was my first impression before I got all the details, you know, before we actually learn about Thor's drinking and Odin's exact hand in it, and i still find it to be a cool little detail that I enjoy Careful who you call an idiot
The fact that Calliope was mentioned in this game makes me think that Kratos actually relates to Thor's guilt in tormenting Modi and leading his sons to their deaths by Odin's manipulation
They have a lot of similarities, they were both manipulated into causing the deaths of one of their children, they both wiped out a race, they both had a cruel and abusive father who was leader of the gods of their realm and they're both trying to change for the child they have left. The main difference is Kratos is near the end of his journey of redemption and Thor is only just starting. I think Kratos realised this when he, Atreus and Mimir are talking about why Thor quit drinking and he recognised that Thor is going through what he went through, which is I think what motivated him to keep trying to talk to Thor at the end and how he knew that Thrud and Atreus' friendship would be the key to getting through to him.
Thor may have been a villain before he realized the error of his ways, but he’s a real badass. Also, his voice sounds similar to Josh Brolin, A.K.A. Thanos.
@@fadillangston9797 and Kratos literally tore the head of Helios, cut the legs of Hermes, broke the neck of Hera, gouged the eyes of Poseidon then broke his neck, fed Hades to his own enslaved souls and so many other gruesome deaths. But he was redeemed, so could have been Thor.
I genuinely felt terrible for Thor he had lost his sons and wanted to make peace with Kratos, but this was refused and Thor decided to try to kill him. I really do hope that Thor was with his sons again at the end.
It's not that he doesn't want peace with thor but odin is here. I think if thor only came here instead of bringing Odin along, yeah he would make peace with thor.

When you hear stories about Thor in the first game you think he's a ruthless killing machine who kills for fun but in this game we get to see something different. You can tell he's a genuinely nice and cool person and he's like that because of Odin. Lines like "Nice place", "You're an OK kid" and "I wouldn't let that mask...", caring about his family, following his father's orders despite knowing their wrong and getting drunk because of killing the giants and other bad things that he has done really show that deep down he's a good person Also I like the detail that Thor isn't Odin's son but when Odin wants him to kill Kratos he is Thor's father
I call BS he’s pretty much a sociopath but they show him in this game during his “trying to be better stage” from what’s told in the last game he’s like a boogie man, in every story with him he kills

In norse mythology thors hammer mjolnir was said to be really heavy that even worthy people cant pick up meanwhile kratos's table was able to stand a lightning strike and its holding the mjolnir
It's not about being worthy its because in the mythology Loki sabotaged the Dwarves thus they could not make a longer handle for the hammer and Thir was the only one who was strong enough to lift it
@@jackhanver1420 no man. Loki did really sabotaged the making of the hammer but because of the bet they had with dwarves. Loki challenged them, that they wont create the greatest weapon ever existed and he bet his head for it. He did lost the challenge though. Odin didn't let them take his head off, instead his mouth was sewn up. As for the hammer, its not about the weight or "worthy" thing. The weapon itself was so enormously hot that could be wielded only with specific gauntlets, which Thor had. Mjolnir weighted like a feather for the wielder, but was heavy as a mountain for enemies. Thor also had a belt that doubled his own strength. So thats it basically. It is said that the hammer had some kind of own will and sometimes flew away. So Thor sometimes had to release it from troubles it got itself in. You should read the stories if you are interested. They are gore, but fun.
@@Frozenmix1 Mjolnir didn’t fly off on its own, that’s not in any of the true sources we have. Also Thor didn’t need the gauntlets or the belt to wield the hammer. He was able to lift it just fine without it. We have limited info due to the sources being so widespread and different regions of people believing slightly different things.
After beating the game fully I understand why Thor says "this feels familiar" when their weapons collide. They put so much effort into this game and I love it.
Never would've expected God of war to have an actually in depth and heart wrenching story of addiction and relapse and the affect of those on family. Phenomenal writing.
Yeah. They stepped it up a few notches in the later games. I think the first games set a solid foundation with most of the plot being driven forward by fear. Kratos only ascends to the throne because the Olympians fear Ares and then the next two games are all about their fear of Kratos. This even affects Kratos and it isn’t until he meets Pandora who isn’t acting out of fear of him. And that reminds him of a time before he was feared. When he was a dad. And he wanted that so much he was willing to abandon his quest for revenge for one moment. The games carry this on as Kratos is afraid for how his past will affect his son and in Ragnarok, hes afraid of the future he is creating for his son.
The moment Thor uttered the words “I have mead!” I knew this was gonna be the best interpertation of Thor. If there is anything Thor loves more than fighting it’s drinking. Now granted, he doesnt actually drink and is trying to remain sober. But him looking like he is ready to fight only to grab the bottle just threw me off completely and me so happy because Mead is such an essential part of Norse Mythology Thor
I think this was mentioned in a different video on the first scene, but it’s Viking custom to put the weapons on the table before a peaceful discussion. If that’s the case, Kratos is being very respectful here.
Funny thing is its a two way street. In Greek tradition it is custom to show all guests hospitality; including unexpected & unwelcome guests. It is also Greek custom for a good guest to not show up empty handed. So if it was intentional by the game makers; it shows Odin did his research and tested Kratos to see if he was a savage only showing up when Thor sent word to him that Kratos would follow custom.
I feel so bad for Thrud. Every warrior that she could've looked up to in her family are all unhinged dense berserkers without discipline and/or complete assholes. And just when his father was about to come around, he got taken away from her. Imagine how much she would have thrived under the tutelage of someone like Kratos. She'd be even more of a perfect student for him than Atreus and not just in terms of fighting style
Honestly, I love Odin. All of his mannerisms and different types of body language is amazing. At 13:57 you can see his shoulders drop a little when he notices Heimdall has moved. Almost as if he's saying "this boy knows I can't see to my right."
Everytime he is about to connect to someone ("wasn't about to loose that mask" moment with Atreus or "we must be better" moment with Kratos) Odin comes in interrupting and stopping him from that
The beginning scene with Kratos , Thor and Odin felt like an episode of the Last Kingdom or Peaky Blinders. There’s a calm conversation first and then all hell breaks loose.
Ya know what? I just realized why Odin felt so familiar. He reminds me a lot of Saul Goodman from BB. The way he structures his words with pauses like he's trying to reason with everyone to get his way, the way he always tries to make deals, I mean sure there are some obvious differences, but god the similarities.

It's such a shame Thor is killed at the end. After everything we saw him do and go through I would've loved to see him become one of the good guys for the next game. Plus he would've been one hell of a playable character.
A detail I never noticed at the beginning is Thor must have only poured the two drinks for Kratos and Atreus but he restrains himself from drinking himself. He savours the smell but even when Odin puts it in front of him he refuses cause he's trying to honour the promise he made to Siff. Odin's words "You're no fun anymore" just ooze with that trademark manipulativeness we heard about cause a drunk Thor was easier to point towards an obstacle and say "Kill" plus let's not even get into the emotional abuse has trickled down into even how Thor treated his sons
I really wanted to see Thor beat Heimdall's ass. Though...I wonder why he called Thor a "sick man". Thor's threat implied he'd just beat the crap out of him but his reply suggested something more sinister 27:19 - "Izza...good fight" cracked me up

You basically looked at a reason why Thor would get his ass kicked "yeah, but I don't like that, so I think it will stalemate because I dunno...experience or something." If you watch all the games summarized, you'll realize just how high Kratos's body count is. He's not lacking on experience compared to Thor by any stretch of the imagination. Aside from Killing tons of literal gods, he's lead armies and killed entire armies just for the fun of it.
Just a theory but i belive at 3:16 the whole first conversation with kratos and thor was just Odin making thor check if their were any traps hints the reason why thor signaled the raven and Odin showing up moments later just shows how little he cared about thor.
Small moment I haven't seen anyone else really talk about, during their fight Kratos throws his axe to hit a pillar behind Thor, knocking it over. But Thor says "Clever!" before it even hits and whacks the pillar away without even looking, showing how much more experienced in combat he is than a lot of the gods Kratos has faced up until this point. Thor is a god, but he's also a tried and true warrior, and this fight shows it pretty well
Santa Monica did a really good job making me like all these characters. Shit, even Odin, despite how much of a two timing snake he was, he had a charm that made me want to see more of him. Really made me wish this would of been a trilogy so they could of developed the Asgardians a little more and create a really epic Ragnarok. The Ragnarok battle felt a little bit quick and underwhelming.
My favorite part is Thor acknowledging that Kratos is weaker than he use to be in GOW series. Pretty much saying he isn't in his prime because he holds back on his anger.
Well I used to think that but no. Kratos in norse mythology is stronger than the young kratos according to the dev. Besides in their game norse gods are stronger than greeq one.
Thrud anger when her dad relapses was real, its horrible to love someone but be angry and hate them at the same time. I'm 100% sure whoever wrote this scene has dealt with alcoholism before.
I'm glad Thor didn't end up like Hercules Thor really is a miss understood character. All those ruthless stories about him was only influence on how much of a shitty father Odin was to him and Thor was emotionally damaged about it.
Note how he says "feels familiar", after him and kratos freeze the lightning bolt because Thor and Faye froze a lightning bolt when they fought with the same axe in Vanaheim
i just realized he was practicing sobriety with kratos until his dad hurt his feelings. i tell ya, this thor character was so interesting to me. and jeez, that jackass oden tempted him with the mug.
Noticed how Thor made an expression of disgust almost like he is not a fan of fighting but does it as an order? He isn’t even really trying to eliminate Kratos, he encourages him to truly fight. Shows how he was far more good than his father Odin
Thor is like that drunk uncle you love who and only ever wants the best for his family yet doesn't know how to do that without numbing himself from the things he's done before in the name of family loyalty that he knows wasn't right

This game gets better and better with every little detail
I always thought that line was out of place, now it makes sense
that he desperately resists to remain consciously. Only for his wife and daughter. But he did it for once and finally
Good catch!

Careful who you call an idiot
Thanos.

When you hear stories about Thor in the first game you think he's a ruthless killing machine who kills for fun but in this game we get to see something different. It's fairly heartbreaking how much of Thor's dialogue is him emphasizing or implying that he's just a stupid brute. The saddest one for me was where he was talking to Sif about giving Thrud swords and he says that she's smarter than her father. A powerful god whose self worth was brought so low by his own parent.
And then Odin kept telling him to "Not think", just further turning him into a weapon. It's depressing really, I felt really bad for Thor.

In norse mythology thors hammer mjolnir was said to be really heavy that even worthy people cant pick up meanwhile kratos's table was able to stand a lightning strike and its holding the mjolnir
By that logic simply putting it (GENTLY) on the ground shatters it. Think theu went with the "worthy" thing

But Thor says "Clever!" before it even hits and whacks the pillar away without even looking, showing how much more experienced in combat he is than a lot of the gods Kratos has faced up until this point. Thor is a god, but he's also a tried and true warrior, and this fight shows it pretty well
This is a better portray of thor with depression than the joke they made of him in the mcu
Let's face it, the MCU is just a big joke now
@@Konig141
Yeah, right
@@Konig141 Yada yada yada
Look I'm not too fond of the MCU as much either but this mcu bad is getting really old, just focus on the game itself.
@@superherochestsymbol1032 the MCU is bad and always has been. F them.
The way he brought him back to life was so 🔥
My favorite part is Thor acknowledging that Kratos is weaker than he use to be in GOW series. Pretty much saying he isn't in his prime because he holds back on his anger.
Well I used to think that but no. Kratos in norse mythology is stronger than the young kratos according to the dev. Besides in their game norse gods are stronger than greeq one.
10:05 the way Thor starts laughing never fails to give me goosebumps, and what a cold laugh he has 🥶
I love the scene when he’s just drinking mead slowly leaning back then falls
Love how the second Odin points at Atreus, Kratos immediately grasps the axe.
Thrud anger when her dad relapses was real, its horrible to love someone but be angry and hate them at the same time. I'm 100% sure whoever wrote this scene has dealt with alcoholism before.
I'm glad Thor didn't end up like Hercules
Thor really is a miss understood character. All those ruthless stories about him was only influence on how much of a shitty father Odin was to him and Thor was emotionally damaged about it.
"You seem like a calm and reasonable person" - Thor a few minutes before a fight
Thor: Take one more step and you're not gonna like how this ends! Thor is a badass. One of my favorite antagonists...!
You can see Kratos used literally all his strength in that punch when Thor says that Odin has plans for Atreus
Still rattled on how he just revived kratos
In the words of Heisenberg: "We're done when I say we're done."
You can jump start the heart.
mjolnir has the power to revive people, thor used it in the mythology to resurrect a goat
Same way they do IRL
I think I finally understand the "you tell me" part... He was threatening to shove that arrow up Heimdall's ass... Heimdall can read intentions. LOL
32:50
Brittle knifes to a mountain face is a great way to compare magni n modi vs Kratos n atreus
8:56 Man that snap gets me every time it’s just so damn good and gives me Thanos vibes but wayyyyy cooler
Well, considering the VA also voices Thanos…
@@KloutGawdKhaos that isn't josh brolin.
Noticed how Thor made an expression of disgust almost like he is not a fan of fighting but does it as an order? He isn’t even really trying to eliminate Kratos, he encourages him to truly fight. Shows how he was far more good than his father Odin
And he still killed the shit out of Kratos
I love the way thor goes: "the fuck you say?!"
11:17 Thor beware the wrath of a calm and reasonable man.
Thor is like that drunk uncle you love who and only ever wants the best for his family yet doesn't know how to do that without numbing himself from the things he's done before in the name of family loyalty that he knows wasn't right
Thor is the drunk Vietnam War vet uncle who did unspeakable things during his time of service.
