I love that your kids are reading historical fiction on a timeline. That’s a great way to help them grasp the changing of time and history. Do you have books written from different perspective (for example, Pocahontas or the first Thanksgiving) written from an indigenous perspective by indigenous authors? Just wondering what options are out there and how to emphasize that history can be viewed from multiple lenses and is inherently biased based on the race/cultural background of the writer. I’m not sure there is anything like that available…
Yes, there are programs that do a better job at that than others. There are several that I would be looking at if I was wanting to add more books like that. "Oh Freedom" has a guide that is known for using more diverse texts, as well as programs like "Build Your Library." Their book lists are not made freely available, so you can't just go and look and add thing here or there, but the overall guides are not super expensive. However, I have not purchased these guides. I also think that books like that are more available in some higher grades (vs. these lower grades). Definitely something to be aware of and looking for to add to one's curriculum.
I am confused as to why you laminated this list. Won’t the marker be more likely to rub off? Or is that the point because you plan on re-using it? I laminate all the things, but I’ve never laminated a reading list. On a side note, I hope to expand our home library to be just chock full of wonderful books like these, not just for my children but for my grandchildren as well.
I use a wet erase marker and you should see the condition our lists are in from last year! Barely legible! So, mostly for durability. I didn’t show it in the video, but I just slide the list onto the shelf that all the books are on so it’s easy to access when my kid takes out a new book and I remember to record the information. I could use a binder, but it’s more about convenient access and remembering to track.
@@CalmintheChaosHomeschool i plan to read it to my 4th graders this year i went back to teaching this year after 10 years at home with my children to finish out the year for a teacher that had to suddenly retire unfortunately due to the teacher shortage they still havent found a permanent replacement. my mother in law is thankfully willing to to oversee my kids homeschooling for me cause though ill help my old school out im not willing to sendd my kids there
