      Oh! So there is a dark “line” on the top and side of the page. I just grab it with my mouse and pull the line down to where I want it to be and then grab the line from the left to where I want that to be. Then that part always stays on my screen while I scroll.

    I am also in Washington. We have our first year of testing this summer. Everyone I've talked to says we can use CAT testing. Have you used this before? Is it valid here? If you have used something else what do you recommend?

      We have always just done our testing through the local public school because my kids take a class or 2 there most years. I’m pretty sure the CAT would be fine. I’d probably do something like that if I had to do the testing.

      Oh, let me just say, first year was HARD. Good enough for me to continue, but it was a rough start. It takes some time to find your groove, and it does get better. But, even with the groove, there are days and periods when the hard comes back 😞 Praying for your homeschool right now!

    • @CalmintheChaosHomeschool

      I want to add that, you have much more than most have to deal with when first starting. Many start with one kid at a time as they grow older. I started with 4, but all school aged at the time. You have a tough dynamic. So give yourself so much grace! My advice for you (that you can decide if it’s right or not for you) might be to start super duper slowly… that could mean just get your oldest doing 1/2 of the work, or all your school age kids doing 1 subject a day. Do that for a bit and slowly add other subjects as you start figuring out a schedule or routine that will work for your family. Don’t try to do all the things all the time. If you need a venting buddy or want to chat more, I’m super happy to be a sounding board or be an outside set of eyes. Feel feel to email me or pm me in Facebook. I’d love to help you feel more successful in your homeschooling if I can ❤️

    I am curious exactly how does Spelling You See work? Seems to be a completely different approach than most other curriculums. I’ve tried looking at it and my brain can’t seem to get how it works.🤣 I would love to understand how it works! Also I am curious is Explode The Code enough on its own to teach a child phonics and how to read? Do you use the teacher guides or the half books? Are Bob Books good first reader books?

    • @CalmintheChaosHomeschool
      @CalmintheChaosHomeschool 9 дней назад

      I have heard great things about the Bob Books. I didn’t teach my kids to read (my youngest was in 2nd grade when we started homeschooling), but my homeschooling friends really like the Bob Books. Then, along those lines, I didn’t teach any of my kids to read, so I don’t know how Explode the Code would work for that. But, I did have struggling spellers and kids who had speech delays and some reading delays and Explode the Code has been great to keep them working on the letter combinations that are used in reading and writing the English language. Then, for Spelling You See. Basically, it is also focusing on letter combinations within English. So, the child is first of all learning to spell in a more organic situation (through sentences and paragraphs vs. a word list). They are only ever seeing the “correct” way to spell the words (no, find the incorrectly spelled word and correct it activities… this is a big no no in the Charlotte Mason philosophy). They are copying the word correctly and learning to focus on the letter combinations that make up that word through color “chunking”. Then, their spelling “test” is writing out the sentences they worked on that week, not disconnected words. So try are learning spelling within the context of normal written language. Check out my Spelling You See videos if you want a look inside and more information about the program :)

    I am struggling with how to schedule our elective subjects. Everyday or just a few days a week. I would love to hear what others are doing. We are doing Health/weight training and Italian.

      I would schedules those out depending on some things. 1) Is this high school or not. If not, I usually do electives every 2-3 days of school. 2) If high school, is this a 1 credit or 1/2 credit course. If it’s a 1 credit course, I’ll probably schedule it daily year long. If it’s a 1/2 credit, I’ll either schedule it daily for 1/2 the year or 2-3 times a week spread out over the year.

    How did this go for you guys? Did you end up using much of the journals or is it better to just read and discuss?

      We did use the journals thoroughly… and we did complete it all. That being said, this was only ok for us. We don’t love textbooks, so, we did not continue with the series.

    So helpful! My son is just in 7th this year, but my niece and nephew are going into 9th (in public school) and it has me thinking and planning 😂 I love the graph you made. Also, am I crazy? Did you used to live in Canada?

    From Beth: we are also in WA, and our kids have been getting high school credit recording since 7th grade. We don't jump them to the higher grades, we just make sure the work they are doing meets high school standards. Usually they start with electives like music and art, sometimes foreign language or health. But it does make it easier as they get older to not have to cream so much in. They also tend to handle it well, so if I had kids who didn't I wouldn't do that. Just getting ready to graduate our oldest, and 2nd is now sophomore, third is 8th, fourth is in 6th. Hope that helps!

      That sounds great. So I guess, my question is, are you then using a transcript that just puts all the maths, english, social studies, science, and electives without the grade level completed? or are you doing it in 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th 12th?

    • @timothyhaslet8410
      @timothyhaslet8410 13 дней назад

      @CalmintheChaosHomeschool from Beth: Yes, it has a completed list of the various classes and credits in each category, and then the second page has the years they completed it. It's partly with a local public school for some of the classes, it's a homeschool program. And they offer credits in 7th, 8th for certain classes, but only if they student gets an A in the class will they count the credit. So one page is the credits, and can have the years completed on the next page. So my daughter is finished 9th grade but has completed 3 years of French, 2 math credits, 1 English Credit, 2 arts credits, etc.

    We used to use CTC math as a supplement . Did they make a big change ? I love our math but it is SO thorough that it takes a very long time to complete. We need to do some catching up.

    • @CalmintheChaosHomeschool
      @CalmintheChaosHomeschool 15 дней назад

      I feel like it’s just the right amount of practice for us. I make all my kids get a green or blue star in order to pass the lesson. That usually means they need to get 80% on 2 sets of the lesson. 2/3 of my kids struggle with math and it can take them 30 mins to 1 hour a day to do their math (at a pace to complete a level in 1 year). My child who doesn’t struggle as much takes about 30 mins a day. So, I don’t know if CTC Math has made a big change or anything, but it’s working for us as our only math program.

    This is my current number 1 option for my rising 5th graders. HOWEVER my goal for them this year is to know to properly construct a paragraph. I have one with learning disabilities and one very reluctant writer. So it looks like they would be going into level 2 for paragraph writing. I had been seriously considering Writing with Ease from the Well Trained Mind, but I liked that EIW had grammar and writing. Have you ever used Writing With Ease?

    • @CalmintheChaosHomeschool
      @CalmintheChaosHomeschool 15 дней назад

      I have not used Writing with Ease. So many writing programs don’t look appealing to me. One that I do want to try sometime is Wordsmith. This upcoming year, my 6th and 7th graders will continue with IEW Writing Lessons, and my 8th grader will be using Cover Story by Clearwater Press.

    • @homeschoollifemom
      @homeschoollifemom 15 дней назад

      @@CalmintheChaosHomeschool I agree. Do you think that EIW is more open and go than IEW? IEW looks so overwhelming to me compared to EIW. But maybe it’s just in my head. Wordsmith does look great, but I don’t think my kids are developmentally ready for the grade 4-6 level and that’s the lowest level I saw.

    • @CalmintheChaosHomeschool
      @CalmintheChaosHomeschool 15 дней назад

      @homeschoollifemom we have only used level 8 of EIW. So I don’t know how they start the writing off for the younger students. Then for IEW I have only used Structure and Style 1A which I believe is 3rd grade and up as well. Though I do think IEW has a lower level as well. But with video lessons EIW is probably the way to go. Level 8 was just too hard to jump into, but level 2 should be ok.
