    Day 1: One of the most challenging obstacles we face after a total knee replacement is getting in and out of a car. It might be on your way home from the hospital, or on your first trip to outpatient physical therapy.
    In this video, I review the most common ways to enter and exit a car on the passenger side front door and a bonus tip about entering from the back door.

      @@totaltherapysolutionsI can’t speak for anyone else, but I saw a video on RUclips……piece of cake.
      Why anyone would want to fit their way into the front seat with a leg that doesn’t want to really bend quite yet , should try it.
      Shocked the hospital staff when I insisted I was going home in the back seat.
      I’m two weeks bout from TKR and just thinking about trying to get in the front.

      Back seat for left knee. (ENTER BACK SEAT BEHIND DRIVER SIDE. Front seat for right knee. That worked real good for me personally.

    I had both knees done but about 8 weeks apart. Only vehicle we had at that time was a elevated 4 runner. So with 2nd Total knee replacement
    it was a challenge. We finally asked to borrow a step stool from the hospital to help push up. Also someone from the back holding on to you with physical therapy belt. Some discomfort and took a while, but was happy I was able to get into suv and go home.

    I had left total knee 4 days ago. My SUV is taller a 4 Runner. I purchased small 4 to 6 inch stool and stepped up with my good knee & sat down. My family carefully moved my surgical knee into the car.

    Thanks a mil for this video. I've a complex knee injury and we have several 2 hour round trips to the hospital for various pre-op tests. We tried the front but it was too uncomfortable, so leg up on the back seat with cushions works best. Great tip about the bin bag.
    The main difficulty is wearing the seat belt without strangling myself - around my waist isn't great but better than nothing.

    Mr Tony meritado, great video..how to go in and out of the car after TkR. Question ..if u decide to sit at back of car..and find u could not sit the ordinary way and place ur seatbelt. Do u think law enforcement folks will excuse u from not wearing ur seatbelt because u are not able to sit in the back of the car the proper way. ( Like u are facing sideways..). Thanks again...filomena Amy. E

    These tips work but would add for L knee surgery, place smaller plastic bag on floor mat to help that L foot slide forward. I found with shoe, foot doesn’t slide on carpet or rubber mat. Also, in/out of truck is another situation. Normally, they say good foot up a step, bad foot down a step. But with a truck, don’t back down with bad foot. Rather, stay on butt & slide down slowly so u land on both feet.

    Tibular plateau break w/surgery, non-weight bearing. What's the easiest way to get in/out of a tall SUV or tall pickup truck, which is my only option for transportation? I'm 67yr old female, 5ft tall & weigh 200#. There is only the regular foot rail on vehicles (about enuf space for half your foot). Front passenger seat is only option as there are infant/children car seats in back seats. Any help appreciated.

    Once day post TKR there is no way you could tolerate thumping down your knee and shimming back into the seat as in the first scenario or be able to lift your right leg in without assistance, the back seat looks more achievable with less pain.

    • @totaltherapysolutions
      @totaltherapysolutions  2 года назад +1

      Ideally you would sit in the back seat and change positions from leg straight and elevated to knee flexed and foot down. If you get a chance to stop at the 2 hour mark and move around it would be beneficial.
