I’m 3 weeks post operation, in such pain, I live on my own and am finding it very difficult and lonely and frightening coping on my own, especially in the middle of the night, thank you for giving me hope.
It’s been almost three weeks for me too,I’m laying here crying, just wanting to feel better again, sending you prayers, icing helps tremendously, but it’s so hard to get comfortable enough to sleep…I’m finding it calming watching videos like this, giving me hope that “this too will pass”God bless, I hope you feel better soon
I’m 3 weeks post op too! It’s been a nightmare, as I have been so poorly with the anaesthetic, and I also have MS. Looking for words of encouragement. Ps. And I used to be a physio!!😂
I’ve had both knees replaced 10 years ago for the first one, 5 years ago for the second one. I’m 86 now and can honestly say that I’ve had no problems. They were done at Wythenshaw hospital Manchester. They were absolutely marvellous and I can’t recommend them enough. Perhaps I should also add, I had a triple bypass there also. Maybe I could get a season ticket for parking.
now days allot better I had kerland Jobe doctors did mine in1970 they treat people better ,first had Whittier ca quack doctors messed my knee up and x-ray I had to ask for lead shield but I was crippled because I was beyond any in sports I threw basketballs full court broke records at school teacher made me do things over, was so fast ,baseball nobody could strike me out, so I was crippled in high school twice. doctor in Whittier made my knee worse, now they do things, god made things happen to them later.
Am 73 now , had both knees done same week eight yrs ago , Had Quad bypass 20 years ago . Retired now as soon as I get my diabetes under control will concur the world . Guess I am a good healer with good doctors .
I am genuinely grateful to Dame Judy Dench & Jonathan Monk for making this video. I am 76, told arthritis in my left knee is "very, very, very bad. You have effectively explained why to wait no further. Spent almost a year trying a stem cell procedure that did not help enough. Now regret not having done surgery instead then. God willing I shall return to Dame Judy Dench's testimony after my surgery saying rhetorically: "If she can go up a flight of circular stairs almost right after her surgery you can do THIS." (Parenthetically I am enamored with the LOVELY autumn colors/tones of the room shown. Sorry if name comes up 2x. Some sort of computer glitch we don't know how to fix. True thanks for this. Warm Greetings from Tennessee--
My Mother was91 & fell upstairs (not down them). We were recommended an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Private Practise. She had the Operation…& told me she never experience any pain after the Op. She was fantastic & still lived on her own & loved to walk. She died when she was 96 …a very strong willed woman who adored he children.
Once again, Dame Judi Dench shows us how truly wonderful she is! For an actor of her stature to be willing to do this for the rest of us to benefit from is just very special indeed!
@@irenedavo3768 I do not know. I live in the US and we have zero national health service. Which are you advocating for? Do people in the UK prefer for those who can afford it to not use free government resources or is it that you would prefer for all to be equal and therefore equal access and quality of care? I could understand both positions. I really just wish we had a NHS.
When you have an arthritic knee, everyday it will get a little worse. When you have had it replaced, everyday it will get a little better. However, post surgery is extremely painful and you think you have made a massive mistake. The pain eventually disappears until you realise it was the best thing you ever did.
Yes, that’s where I am now: what a horrible mistake I’ve made. Today seems like it will be a depressed day and that was my first thought when I jolted awake at 4:00 am. And when this attitude comes along I fight it even harder. But for now, I only wish I could turn back the clock. I’d do ANYTHING else. Not TKR.
I am 6 days post surgery and woke this morning regretting my decision. Seeing this comment has helped me refocus and look to the next few months rather than days
@@sarahneate7548 I'm a 68 year old woman and had a partial knee replacement and now im 9 weeks Post surgery. I had the same same negative attitude at week 1. Only now im beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. At PT yesterday I got up to 110 flexion. The goal is 120. I cried almost every day since the surgery. Worst thing ever. Some advice-- watch your extension keep that leg straight. do your excersises. If you don't you'll end up with a limp. Go on youtube for new ideas on recovery and physical therapy for a total knee replacements. Ice and elevate after excersises. Take your medication one hour before PT. Don't rush to do physical work. You'll just get swollen again. This is a slow process i still have pain -but much less-and its still hard to sleep because I can't turn over yet. I just got back from a two week trip to Hawaii with my grandson which I couldn't cancel. I still managed to have a good time. The doctor told me I would be all set at six weeks but that wasn't really true. Only now at nine weeks people are noticing how good I am walking in I am feeling much better - 75% better than where you are now. It really does get better and you will be happy in the end
I love the insider trick of stopping 5 minutes before arriving at some function to stretch & lubricate joints so you dont limp at function. These interviews were so helpful. Thank you Dr. & Judy.
I had a TKR at 74. The first few weeks were very painful - nights were the most difficult time. But persistent exercises and walking paid off. It was only a few weeks before I was able to walk over two miles. I found that the flexibility in the knee continued to improve over an 18 month period. It is now 3.5 years and I am delighted with the knee which had been extremely painful before the operation.
Hi, can someone give me a right advice plz? My mom is 75 and she is in London going to have her first knee transplant, so shall she do it or not plz? Her knees do not pain like before as it’s been ages that she was knee arthritis. Reports definitely need her to do a transplant but she says i can live with painkillers & without walking, but she doesnt prefer transplant she afraid of We also took her out of waiting list once and now for the second time she also hesitate again. Plz give me right advise is transplant good for her or not?
She is great for her age ..but I don't have pain it's soreness so I wount gave a knee replacement ..but I walk my dog each day or get a shopping trolley when I go shopping but as I told my doctor you can't fix old age ..some people get over it quicker but I don't think I could but I'm keeping my old knees thank you Judi Dench your great lady xxx
Had knee surgery two years ago, had planned a two week trip to Europe 7 weeks after surgery. Having that goal made me work very hard, and thanks to great physical therapists, I was able to enjoy climbing hills on Lake Como. And sightseeing through the Alsatian vineyards. A goal is so important!
I just want to thank you for throwing me a lifeline. Nothing to do with knee replacements but dementia. I lost my husband to dementia in 2012. I spiraled into a world of drugs to dull the pain. Am now trying to work my way through withdrawals after 10 years. Very, very painful. Watching all of your performances has helped me tremendously. Thank you so very much. I know you will probably never read this but sure helped to write.
Ah, Kathleen same thing happened to me with my dear wife. It strains your beliefs, but you get over it, and you just get on with life and the wonderful things that there is. RUclips and the internet are a life saver. I average some 6 hours a day. Course living in the UK, with its marvellous NHS done help things too. Hope this helps you Kathleen, and keep on living. Take care.
Dame Judi mightn’t read this, but others have, and will. Bravo for taking the steps to help yourself - which is EXACTLY what rehab after knee replacements surgery is. The parallels of pain and recovery are right there. You can do this. ❤️🌹
Bravery needs to be acknowledged by everyone. I am not Judy Jench, but simply a human who has tasted the same sour fruit of anxiety and depression. I am getting through it day by day, and you will be alright also. Good luck.
I may have commented on this before but it certainly is worth reiterating: this video was instrumental in my getting knee replacement surgery after an accident. Thank you Dr. Monk. Thank you Dame Judy. I was absolutely paralyzed with fear until I watched this.
I had both my knees replaced at 57 (8 months apart). It’s been life changing. I’m back to long distance swimming, walking and modern jive dancing. Not a single moment of regret. I’ve got my life back.
Had total knee replaced 14 years ago. I’m now 73. Was torture to go thru but would gladly do again. I had torn ligaments and muscles that had to be repaired. I have no pain and do anything I want. I can outwalk my children. I was bone to bone and wish I had done earlier. I waited till I could barely walk. Missed so much. Good attitude and a lot work pays off.
@@mpat100 it doesn’t feel any different than a normal knee. The only thing different that I only notice when I go to an exercise class is that the knees don’t bend quite as far as a natural knee. For example if you are on your knees, you can’t sit back on your heels. Or if you are standing and you bend your leg so that your foot is behind you, you can’t reach back and grab your ankle. But for everyday living, they feel completely natural. I’m very happy because now I can go hiking again and walk long distances.
Yes, I had torn cruciate ligament and bone on bone, my knees slipped even when just standing. It was hard stuff but well worth having both knees replaced one year apart. I can sit cross legged as before, fantastic results.
Had my knee done 15 years ago - very painful first 3 days - from then on better and better, riding my horse 8 weeks later ! Now 75 and everything still perfect ! Wonderful operation - don’t wait !
i had both of my knees done together in 2018 when i was 70 .... with very good results...could walk already when i was in rehab... stairs no problems...had a very good surgeon and i am very thankfull.
I’m having to recover after knee replacement surgery without any pain medication because my stomach cannot handle it. I’m using lots of ice and hope I can sleep better in one more week. This is my second knee surgery, and I know it will be worth it-no pain no gain. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and your optimism. 🥰
Hi, I am Angela from eastern North Carolina but live in Colorado now. I am 56 years old with OA of the left knee, stage 4. The right one isn't as bad. I have shared the video and doing more research on this. I have also been trying to loose weight, but with COPD and edema, it is hard, But I am Not giving up. God wouldn't either. So, I am thankful that I have found this video as well. Love Judi and her acting...Amazing and Beautiful she is. Thank you for sharing this with us. Hope you all have a Wonderful day, and stay Positive as well. ❤️🤗❤️
Prescription meds interacted, so pain management failed and it was 2 months of misery, before the pain was all I thought about. At the time I thought never again. But a year later, there's a slight possibility. Hopefully the other knee stays adequate. Function, however was a great success.
I had a terrible experience with bilateral total knee replacement. It was 3 years ago, and I still have trouble walking.I asked my surgeon if it would get any better. He said, "No. That's as good as it gets." Unfortunately, he used stainless steel knee replacements which are heavy and cumbersome instead of Titanium because that's what Medicare will pay for. I would never recommend him to anyone for any type of orthopedic surgery. I also contracted an infection in the hospital that they didn't pick up until I was in the rehab facility and was running a high fever. Total incompetence on the part of the hospital staff.
I began listening to this after having SI joint stabilization operation last night and I got to the part where Dame Judy Dench says “if you have a dodgy knee” and decided it would be fun for my husband to listen to this. Also thank you so much for posting. You’re such a wonderful actress a joy every time I ever see you. Thank you for posting this to help other people -I have to do two knee replacements, starting in February, and the following one in September --I am eager to listen to what you have to say❤❤❤
Had total knee replacement 10 weeks ago. The first 2 days were painful but after the third day there was no holding me back! After 3 weeks post surgery I was able to walk 2 blocks and I have continued to improve with PT so that my rotation is 120. Oh, BTW, I am 75 and have a brand new lease on life!
@@dereklmcguire I haven't seen anyone mention ice but it's very soothing post op. The first two weeks ARE very painful, but it's well worth it long term and after the first 2 weeks the improvement is really rapid.
So proud of you. Great job. I'm getting mine done January 10 Gathering as much input l can get from those who have suggestions and answers Thanks for posting
I had a left hip replaced at age 80. Handled all by myself with zero help from family. I live in second floor condo with 24 steps. Only in hospital one day and up immediately after surgery. Did laundry on 3rd day. Had 10 days of therapy. Best decision as I could no longer play golf. I am now 82, going to gym classes 3x week and play 9 holes of golf once a week. If you needed, don’t be afraid. Go for it.
I had a full knee replacement done 10 months ago. The first 3 days weren't fun, but after 3 weeks it was good. Now, there is a small numb area, on the knee, but no pain. So great after suffering years of grinding, jabbing pain and painkillers. Thank you Prof Sochart!
Iv just had mine done post 8days I’m doing the exercises at home but it’s physically and mentally challenging I literally want to give up but equally want to persevere when I hear positive comments how are u now back to normal ?
My poor husband had the “bone on bone” issue for quite awhile and it was HORRIBLE to see him in so much pain. And he put on quite a bit of weight because he couldn’t move and exercise like he usually always had. So he was in this vicious cycle of …. When the Ortho Docs would say…”Well lose 40lbs and we’ll do the surgery “ Well that was pretty much a HUGE FRUSTRATION b/c he couldn’t exercise, thus he couldn’t lose the lbs. But THANK GOD ALMIGHTY our prayers were answered when we found a Brilliant Doctor that would actually fashioned a joint to fit the knee, rather than just use “stock replacement joints”. It changed our lives. He did so well that he had the other side done and he now out of knee pain. So “PLEASE, PLEASE keep on searching for your perfect Doctor. Because not just any old one will due. And BTW, Love Dame Judy so much. 💞
Thank you for this comment. I'm happy that your husband is doing so well. I too had one doctor say I had to lose 40 lbs. before he would do the surgery. (I was 80 lbs. overweight at the time). I found another surgeon who had done many, many knee replacements and he said there was no problem doing the surgery for someone my size. He didn't use a special knee joint because I have small knees. Everything worked out fine and I was able to be more active and actually lost 40 lbs. I just had my 2nd knee done three weeks ago. One thing I noticed is that recovery time takes much longer because of the weight - I don't remember how long it took for that first knee but it was much longer than other people. But I should be able to be even more active and lose even more weight this time. I'm 63.
Dame Judi Dence is a wonderful lady. I’m going to meet my surgeon in 2 weeks and she has given me so much encouragement and has made me feel more confident. Thank you such a wonderful honest video.
I had right knee replacement surgery 5 months ago. 2nd knee 7 weeks ago. I did lots of water exercises before surgery and as soon as Dr released me to go back to the pool which was about 6 weeks after surgery. I only took extra strength Tylenol for pain. That’s it. I had PT for 6 weeks right after surgery. I am back in the pool exercising vigorously. I don’t swim, I exercise. Knees feel great. Unfortunately my body is riddled with RA RA Meds, vitamins and exercise help me move so much better even though I walk with a cane. But my struggles is not with my knees. It’s with my feet. I give Glory to our LORD JESUS CHRIST my Healer and Helper. 🙂
@@doloresreynolds8145 I am taking a bone supplement (new chapter brand). I am also taking a calcium supplement to help “rebuild” my bones. They were recommended to me by my chiropractor and kinesioligist massage therapistI have been seeing since February 2022. In some ways I do feel better. More energetic. But my ankle still has a long ways to go if it indeed heals. Still going to the pool 4-5 times a week for 2 hours at a time. Now that summer is here, I am getting vit D outside, some fresh air, a bit of a tan, and fun in the sun while doing my water exercises in the outdoor pool. Blessings upon all!
I wish I had seen this months ago. Had one knee replaced in June. It is doing very well. Now the other knee is going. Thank you Dame Judi and all who produced this.
Thank you Dame Judi Dench for sharing such a personal experience in your life. As a 69 year old man who's knees are giving me payback for the things I did in my youth, I too am in dire need for complete knee replacement. I can only walk for a few minutes before some unseen person starts stabbing my knee with an ice pick. Unfortunately since I live alone, I've had to forgo the surgery and rely on dietary supplements to hopefully relieve some of the pain.
I needed, and was offered by the Ortho Surgeon, to have both knees replaced 17 years ago - Dear God I wish had got them done back then. I am almost crippled now and can I get it done now on the NHS ? ......... not a chance !
I’ve had both knees replaced in the last 18 months (I’m 47). Together with Dame Judi, I say it’s the best thing I’ve ever had done. My percentage of asymmetry in walking these days is 1%. I did rehab in hospital after each replacement and found it invaluable. Twelve days for the first knee, eight for the second knee and both times I walked out using just a walking stick. Get up, get moving, don’t be afraid of the pain. Also keep massaging the knee - it helps soften scar tissue under the skin and helps the skin and muscles stretch back to normal. Good luck to anyone having a joint replaced.
I am trying to find out if people that have had both knee’s replaced wether they can Neal down on there knee’s with out pain as I have had both mine replaced and I can not Neal down without them hurting it’s painful
@@ronaldstreatfield1070 I have had both knees replaced and its a no no for kneeling down i cant do it. Best thing ever though getting the knees replaced, i have mobility back.
@@ronaldstreatfield1070 From what I understand kneeling is a big no no after knee replacement as you would be kneeling directly on the scar. I've just had Unicompartmentel Replacement in the right knee. Also when you kneel you are resting directly on the lower Tendon between the Knee Cap and Tibia.
I had TKR on my right knee three months ago, & although it was very painful for the first couple of weeks, I am thoroughly pleased with the outcome & my progress thus far. The physical therapy is extremely important for a full & speedy recovery, just as Dame Judi says! I still have a few weeks of physical therapy left, and then I will be progressing towards having my left knee replaced, also. The horrible pain from “bone on bone” arthritis is so much worse than the post-surgery healing pain. You can endure the post-surgery pain better, perhaps because you KNOW it is getting better daily! I am 75 now, soon will have another birthday, and I can honestly say that I wish I would have had TKR done long ago, as I have been suffering far too long! So if you are in doubt about it, believe me, you won’t be sorry in making the choice to be pain free.😊
Great advice although I am just 55 I have had past injuries on my right knee which has left me with bone on bone shattered cartilage and twisted and knotted tendons. I am very active and a keen cyclist I can no longer walk far the pain is excruciating if I do too much was offered the cortisone injection lasted only 2-3 weeks and back to square one Doc advice was keep taking the injection for a year. But I have decided to go for the knee replacement now having watched the video and read all the great advice the after pain will be temporarily the bone on bone will only get worse. My left leg is fantastic thank god but I have developed a limp and go down the stairs backwards sometimes I cannot bend my leg it's so bad. Thankfully I don't have sleep disturbances as pain doesn't come with sleep but nothing will stop me now from going for the surgery life is too short for suffering
What problems did you have because I’m 8 weeks out and my knee is still bent, I can’t straighten it out or bent it anymore then it is. I’m going to have to have a MUA
I have had two total knee replacements over 4 years. Fabulous surgeon. One night in hospital, no going to rehab or rehab pools Just a home visit from a Physio for a few weeks twice a week. Amazing surgeon. No problems since. All great.
Had my left knee done 5 weeks ago. Maybe I was lucky but I never used a walker, only a cane. I ditched the cane after a few weeks. I go for physio twice a week. I drove after 4 days. I've always been active so physio was not painful and I was far ahead of the goal that was set for me. Good luck to all those going through this.
@Fiona Haddon, I hope you're rehabilitating and following doctor's orders. My insurance plan allowed for in home physical therapy which extremely helpful and made my recovery fast and complete. It's been 2-1/2 years and it's the best thing I could have had done. I wish you the best!
@@kimperes5987 my Uncle did Not doe the exercise and his surgery was a "fail".. But, we later found out he had mental health issues and it hurt his recovery work.
@@gemini_minor It’s going well and you need lots of patience. Need to ice ice ice and do all the exercises you are told to do. The more you get up and move the better even if it’s painful. They say it can take months for your knee to heal and there’s no point rushing that process.
Having had both a hip and a knee replacement the hip rehab is less painful and the knee rehab takes much longer to become comfortable. Water exercises before the surgery helped both situations and were also helpful after surgery. My surgeon also recommended using a rocking chair to gently improve flexibility. Post-surgical therapy is not optional and after a year or so you will forget that it is not original equipment. Good luck to all who contemplate this type of surgery.
I have had three hip replacement surgeries, no knee replacements but one reverse should. Hip replacement surgeries are a sweet walk in the park compared to shoulder replacement. Just saying.
Thank you Dame Judy for helping me understand better the hopes and expectations you had and the actual process you went through during your recovery. Blessings to you as you continue to heal.
What a joy Dame Judy is. I’ve always known it. So many years of pleasure she’s given us. You see what determination she has eh. God Bless you mum. PEACE
Six years after Ms. Dench's video, I'm coming up to my first TKR in April and I want to say their video will be one I replay in my preop weeks and during my recovery, for its informative, inspirational, and also humorous info. I will particularly keep in mind to have a goal as my target to keep moving! In my case, an extended family picnic in late June! Thanks to you both! Be well!
I'm only 51 and had to have a total knee replacement due to surgical errors during an ACL reconstruction, which left me with stage 4 osteoarthritis. I also have psoriatic arthritis, which is autoimmune inflammation. I'm a week post-surgery after waiting 8 years until I was over 50. I am amazed at how quickly I was up and walking again.
Hi I had both both knees done and it’s the best thing I ever did. I do not have any knee pain at all. Thank you to my specialist and my physio. I am from South Africa and wish I had done it sooner. I was in my sixties when I had it done.all the best to everyone.
My mum is due for this operation and I know she’s worried about it,I’m going to show her this video, hopefully it will calm some of her fears.. so thanks 💋
I had my first done last year when I was 54 and have just had my 2nd done 2 weeks ago. I'm walking around and going up and down stairs without crutches and managed to walk round Tesco last night pushing a trolley for 45 mind, my 15 year old son did packing, lifting bags etc. Tell her not to worry the first 10 days are the worst, it's just a matter of taking painkillers constantly and ice, but the pain is, an ache not anything excruciating. Plenty of ice on knee does work also. Good luck
I had my right knee replaced a few years ago after tolerating pain for several years. When I could barely walk, or do stairs I knew I had to have my knee replaced. I will never regret the surgery. I function as though it is my natural knee. My doctor said that I was very flexible and did not require frequent exams. Maybe it was because of the 18 years I danced ballet in my younger years.
Kinematically Aligned total knee replacement was the best for myself. I was walking in three days. I was driving in Four days. There was absolutely no Physical Therapy other than at home stretching. No mechanical therapy. No more arthritic pain from the time I came out of anesthesia. No revisions. No mobility issues. Fully recovered and complete mobility and range of motion after 120 days. I had an ACL replacement surgery 24 years prior. It was done 18 years after a completely torn ACL from a ski accident. I can’t speak highly enough of this procedure. It gave me my life back!
Doing the cortisone injections now and considering a knee replacement this fall, you have reassured me it is a difficult decision to make but thanks to all who share their stories
I am very determined myself. I am on my second day. But I so admire Judy Dench that I shall redouble my commitment. This woman is amazing. Thank you both. P.S. I am American but am married to a really nice English gentleman who is devoting himself to helping me. All that and the lovely accent as well!
Thanks, I am 66 yrs old and I am having total knee replacement next week and I am terrified about the surgery and the unknown after it. I have even thought of canceling, but I appreciate your words encouragement. I hope that everything turns out ok!
Although mine was a hip replacement (both knees coming soon), pre-op conditioning IS very important. I needed to lose quite a bit of weight so I took up swimming and water aerobics. It helped tremendously with my recovery post-op. I almost could not walk in the month before the surgery and was walking 2-3 miles unaided about a month post-op. The surgeon and PT were very pleased almost to the point of amazement about how quick I recovered. Not bad for a 62 year-old curmudgeon.
I was in pich perfect condition; was declared a brilliant candidate but I have suffered during recovery. At three months walking still difficult as my leg is very sore. I am worse than before. I keep going and am working out and walk every day in spite. There are no guarantees.
Just recently gone through total knee replacement 3 weeks ago . The result is unbelievable and is getting stronger by the day and would recommend to anyone thinking about it to get it done to get your day to day life back on track pain free
Seven weeks have flown by and knee getteing better by the day .surgeon was happy and told I can go back to work but don't over do it . Being in building knee will let me know. Am able to walk over two miles a day and continue with exercises
I had a total shoulder replacement done almost two years ago and a lot of what Dame Judi says works for shoulders as well. I am glad she emphasizes the exercises; the physical therapy is absolutely vital to the success of the replacement.
I had two total knee replacements when I was 42, totally wonderful for 25 years, then they started to deteriorate, I was in pain again, I then had two more replacements! Thoroughly recommended, go for it, I got my life back again... what is essential is getting the right exercise and physiotherapy afterwards.
Thank you Dame Judi Dench. I watched your video the day before my left knee replacement surgery and I was extremely anxious. This video calmed me down.
I've had knee replacement on my left knee and hip replacement on my left hip. I felt wonderful after both replacements . I was painless for the first time in 30 yrs.
Judi, you are so right about being fit before the total knee replacement. Following the exercise regiments are also essential for total recovery and a better future life.
I am 50 and need a knee replacement but I am a bit scared to do so. Dame Judi Dench is such an inspiration! She really made me think differently about my decision for having the surgery done! Thank you so much! PS What a beautiful and lovely person Dame Judi seems to be. ❤️
California Ruderalis Go for it. Had my left knee done 7 years ago at 53. It was tuff going and hard work afterwards. But well worth the effort. I can use the knee as well as before without pain. Had improvements till 18 months after. Because we are younger it tends to take a bit longer to recover, because our nerves are more alert. I haven't touched painkillers for my knee for o I don't know years now. Physio is imperative to gain bend. Mine is up to 120 degrees bend and I wouldn't settle for more. I easily walk my dogs 10km a day. Still working.
I admire this lady and her wonderful personality, she encouraged me now to do this process that I was reluctant to do. Great advice before and after the operation. Greetings from Saudi Arabia
I absolutely agree and having a positive attitude and doing your exercises really makes a huge difference. I love my titanium knees! Good job sharing this to help others Mam, thank you.
I agree with you 100 % I just had my second one done 11-6-24 Thank you dear. I'm 62 and I have a long road ahead to recover as well you do need support through this process is very painful but the out come from my 1st knee replacement was supper successful 🙌 Thank you for sharing the Truth About your experience Prayers for your complete healing 🙏 ❤.
I have had both of my knees replaced and I agree with her entirely. It is a sensual you must do the exercises afterwards. My newest knee is almost 5 months old and I am now doing everything I used to do years before. I’m walking up and down stairs and I’m able to walk with no limp or even a cane which I used for the last 15-20 years. I am very happy with my total knee replacements and would gladly do it again. The recovery was not nearly as horrible as I thought but I did push myself and that’s why I’m doing so well. And also an excellent surgeon had something to do with it too, lol.
When the doctor told my Mom she needed a knee replacement she was 82 years old. He told her the recovery was a year She said " A year ! At this age I don't even know if I am going to live another year. I am not spending it in rehab". My Mom died a year and a half later. I guess she knew something. It looks like Dame Judi will live much longer life. I hope she does. Godspeed sweet one.
I've had both knees replaced, 4 years apart. Very painful before but both operations successful. One thing to remember don't think that after the op thats it, do the physio exercises, it makes all the difference in the long term
Thank you ... my pain was disabling I was so grateful for the surgery .... compared to the pain before surgery the recovety was a godsend ...the hard part will be losing the weight i gained in 2 years trying to find s dr that would do it before i was 60 years old i am grateful every day
So proud of you Dame Judy. I just had my second total knee replacement. The pain is terrible but I'm determined to get stronger. Pain is something really hard for me to cope with. I love your acting. I especially enjoyed your TV series where you and your first love got back together after being lovers during WWII. It was a great series and I've watched it at least three times. Love your movies too.
Dame Judy you are a marvel. Having to be back to work after 6 weeks must have been so painfull for you. I am now in my 12th week. Very painfull to start with but easing off a bit now. Still very stiff but you are right excersise is crucial. Still a long way to go yet.
What I wish I knew before my knee op? That this video existed. After over 3 months of hell I took this advice and the improvement has been phenomenal. In just a few days too. My surgeon gave me similar advice but this video explains why. I used to stop doing whatever I was doing if the pain worsened, which was wrong. After watching this video I refused to hobble or limp, I walked up and down stairs despite it hurting. I exercised through the pain and within 2 - 3 days have resumed a normal life. The pain has lessened so much that it's hardly worth mentioning. It is thanks to you both that I have my life back and I am eternally grateful.
I've had to deal with pain for so long and I just saw knee surgery as another and possibly irreversible reason for more pain, my knee pain is only a part of my pain, but a big part. I've had to work in pain, try to sleep in pain, go to college in pain, it took me 10 years in between working, 10 years of trying to complete one solid year of college, but the worst pain was when I couldn't play with my beloved grandchildren and when my first granddaughter at the age of 5 wanted to play because I had told her the night before we were going to do something special the next day and I had to tell her the next day that I didn't feel good enough that morning to play and finally she told me "you don't ever feel good", and now she has my great grands and I'm still battling pain, you gave me hope, you helped me to want to fight again, I'm going to get back my courage and I know I stand amongst many who you have helped by sharing your experience with those of us who needed to hear your story and the message it held. THANK YOU!
I had knee replacement in 2011 and 2012. Best thing I ever had done. I was in bad shape for 12 years. Tell told me I was too young. At 69 I had first one done the therapy was rough but well worth the pain. Today I can walk up to 2miles bend it dance etc. Gave me new life.
The thing is too . Judy Dench is a multi millionaire who can afford the best of everything and really has no idea how hard most of us alone find post surgery.
You have a good point... My experience is so bad that I can't even begin to explain 😢😢😢. By YAH's Grace and mercy I'm praying for the relief to come my way. It's been (2 &1/2 years)
That's the thing, isn't it? I live alone in the country with all the home indoor/outdoor responsibilities, and in the case of knee replacement, no one to help and no money to pay anyone during the recovery period.
So true. I had both knees done a year apart. Best thing I ever did. They were grinding, painful, bone on bone. Now, no pain, they are so strong. Caveat: the recovery was a bit rough. Pain after surgery. Take the pain killers. I do have a little stiffness and some ache. But compared to what they were like before, they are great!
I am calling the doctor right now! I have tried cortisone shots, but it only helps for about a month. I have bone on bone contact on my knee, and I will now make the commitment to get surgery. It wont get any better without surgery.
I just love Dame Judi - she is absolutely without doubt my favourite actress and probably my favourite person I have never met. She has mastered the best way of acting..."never let the audience catch you doing it".
I’m almost six weeks post total knee replacement and still experiencing a lot of pain. Walking is fine, sitting is uncomfortable. Worst pain is at night. Unfortunately, the operation triggered sciatica in operated leg which still troubles me. Have worked really hard doing my exercises but knee can’t bend at 90 degrees. I really don’t think I could face having my other knee replaced. The pain 5 weeks post op is more painful than pre op.
Just had total knee replacement on right side just 6 weeks ago. Still having allot of pain especially when I am trying to walk. Feels like something is rubbing on something. Need to strengthen my quads though. Judy is fabulous and so is her Dr. I want to be able to walk a 5K which I hope I can do. Just wish I didn’t feel the clunking. ☺️
Reminds me of Jack Van Impe he said he used to be able to sneak up on Rexella his wife for a little kiss but no longer his knee replacement also made a noise and she could hear him coming. He was a precious Preacher of the End Times biblically and with current events
Thank you so much for your discussion on this subject. I have two bone on bone knees which I have been postponing surgery but you are correct it will not get better. I see my surgeon next week and I’ve decided to go ahead with one knee at a time.
Thank you Dame Judy for doing this video. I have bone on bone with micro fractures on both knees and due to have replacements done on both knees. I have had 17 surgeries and not one bothered or scared me, but I am terrified about getting my knees done. I keep thinking what if, but at the same time, if I don’t the “what if’s don’t matter” because I won’t be walking for long anyway. It’s good to here information from someone who is not a doctor.
This is truly the best video I have ever watched on knee replacement, it covered everything, as I am considering on having the operation it was very informative, just a question are they getting better at knowing how long the knee replacement will last? thank you for this video and thank you Dame Judy Dench,it shows she is just like us I so enjoyed her frankness.
Yes to all this. Mine was termed ‘complex’ after the procedure, longer spike into femur, titanium and had to stabilise my knee joint as disfigured by it all luckily positive thinking has helped all through x
I’m 3 weeks post operation, in such pain, I live on my own and am finding it very difficult and lonely and frightening coping on my own, especially in the middle of the night, thank you for giving me hope.
I also live alone, and I understand how you feel. Sending you hugs and quick healing.
Do you live in Western Australia?

Maybe I could get a season ticket for parking.
good for you! It is all about quality of life and sitting watching the world go by is not quality if you can do something about it.
Or a loyalty card.
Half off your next operation. Good luck mate!
now days allot better I had kerland Jobe doctors did mine in1970 they treat people better ,first had Whittier ca quack doctors messed my knee up and x-ray I had to ask for lead shield but I was crippled because I was beyond any in sports I threw basketballs full court broke records at school teacher made me do things over, was so fast ,baseball nobody could strike me out, so I was crippled in high school twice. doctor in Whittier made my knee worse, now they do things, god made things happen to them later.

I'm in my 4 week of knee replacement. Not as painful but physical therapy is kicking my ass.

Was it on NHS?
Not TKR.

Good attitude and a lot work pays off.
how close to having the natural knee is it?
When did it start to feel normal?

I was extremely fortunate, exellent doctor, i did the exercises 3 times a day (my family made me). Im delighted i did. 👵
Me too. Exercise and physio. Fantastic surgeon.
Let me add, that I did do the physio therapy.

My wife had a total knee replacement 4 weeks ago. This video was immensely helpful. Thank you.

Best thing I ver did too!

How did it go? How are you recovering?
My mother is having her surgery in two weeks.
@@gabydobbie358 So it sounds like you’re bionic by now! Hopefully you are feeling better.
@@doloresreynolds8145 hahaha. Thanks, I am doing fine.
PEACE
Thank you for sharing Dame Judi. I love you and your work. You are a global treasure!
Why did u have to wait 8 years?
surgical " error" during an ACL ? be more specific when you accuse.....
ACL??
I am 53 with stage 4 osteoarthritis. Thanks for posting this as it's encouraging to hear
@@susancmeyer Glad it offered hope.
Hi I had both both knees done and it’s the best thing I ever did. I do not have any knee pain at all. Thank you to my specialist and my physio. I am from South Africa and wish I had done it sooner. I was in my sixties when I had it done.all the best to everyone.
Most painful thing next to my hip replacement. I had pain for months. Never again.
so lovely to hear from Judie Dench . and you are now having memory to get through this .
Good luck
Claire Sutton your mom had her surgery the same time as me..how is she doing? Is she sleeping at night?
@@rosemarygaeta8205 when did you have your op? I'm 3 weeks 3 days post op. Still getting lots of aching especially at night time
@@bonniethecockapooadventure2819 hi, i had my surgery on 8/8. I still have pain but the nights are really hard. I can't get comfortable
I had both my knees done, one in 2009 and the other in 2014. No pain, and I can walk miles....well worth the effort.
Doing the cortisone injections now and considering a knee replacement this fall, you have reassured me it is a difficult decision to make but thanks to all who share their stories
Can we exercise I mean go jogging?
I am very determined myself. I am on my second day. But I so admire Judy Dench that I shall redouble my commitment. This woman is amazing. Thank you both.
P.S. I am American but am married to a really nice English gentleman who is devoting himself to helping me. All that and the lovely accent as well!
Judi drench has a fantastic and endearing personality. This is very informative.
Thanks, I am 66 yrs old and I am having total knee replacement next week and I am terrified about the surgery and the unknown after it. I have even thought of canceling, but I appreciate your words encouragement. I hope that everything turns out ok!
Me too, in 3 weeks, thinking of postponing, but glad i found this video, n all the comments here, really helping, wish me luck😅

Totally agree.
Seven weeks have flown by and knee getteing better by the day .surgeon was happy and told I can go back to work but don't over do it . Being in building knee will let me know. Am able to walk over two miles a day and continue with exercises
Thank you for your hope. I'm having mine done July 13, 2020.

I'm 46 , doctor saying I'm to young , I need both knees done, but I got the best insurance right now
Neechele Thompson, find another doc
Wow! 42? That is awfully young for knee replacements. You got lucky they did them that young
Thank you very much Dame Judi and Mr Monk for making this video. I am having knee replacement soon and found it very positive and encouraging.
My friend had both knees done at the same time..she was very disciplined and exercised regularly, even walking the day after the double op. Amazing.
Thank you, Judy. Having mine next month .You have been a great source of inspiration and comfort ❤️
Me too Ms Dench. I’m so extremely frightened about having mine done but your commentary has given me a bit of calm. Thank you.
Had it done yesterday. I can't wait until the pain passes. I'm laying here at 5 am. It hurts too much to sleep. 😣
I had a total knee replacement on a Thursday and drove myself to work on Monday without pain. Thank you Dr Yim from Kaiser.
I admire this lady and her wonderful personality, she encouraged me now to do this process that I was reluctant to do. Great advice before and after the operation. Greetings from Saudi Arabia
Yes me too , from Tennessee 🇺🇸

In the hospital right now and so very happy to see this segment. Love Dame Judi Dench
Just had a TKR done and wasn't real sure as what to expect after surgery.
So far, so good! Surgery & rehab not as bad as I thought as it would be👍
Thak you Dame Judi Dench for sharing this!!! And thank you Jonathan Monk for posting. It really helps to hear others' stories.
I absolutely agree and having a positive attitude and doing your exercises really makes a huge difference. I love my titanium knees! Good job sharing this to help others Mam, thank you.
I've had my knee
You must do the exercises, without failure. That will make all the difference in your recovery ❤️
Yes !! Use it or lose it !!!!!

Thank you Flowerpot, I really really needed to hear that!
THANK YOU!
@@ivywalker2422 are you doing better now? 7/8/20?
I had knee replacement in 2011 and 2012. Best thing I ever had done. I was in bad shape for 12 years. Tell told me I was too young. At 69 I had first one done the therapy was rough but well worth the pain. Today I can walk up to 2miles bend it dance etc. Gave me new life.
I pray that i can be where you are now with your knees.
The thing is too . Judy Dench is a multi millionaire who can afford the best of everything and really has no idea how hard most of us alone find post surgery.
This is what I was thinking.
You have a good point...
My experience is so bad that I can't even begin to explain 😢😢😢.
By YAH's Grace and mercy I'm praying for the relief to come my way. It's been (2 &1/2 years)
That’s it!
That was me..have surgery scheduled for Nov 20 on my left knee...good luck to you.
I got to have knee replacement also and I am scared but committed to therapy and exercise.
I now have both knees replaced. 2 yrs apart. I had a great surgeon and great pt . Thanks to family for helping too. TEAM WORK
Good luck on the surgery i had my tkr 5 weeks the first couple weeks are the hardest!
Been told i need a knee replacement soon. This video has been very helpfull. Dame Judi looking as beautiful as ever. Thank you
I just love Dame Judi - she is absolutely without doubt my favourite actress and probably my favourite person I have never met.

Give yourself more time
Just had total knee replacement on right side just 6 weeks ago.
It is wonderful that Dame Judi had such positive results. I can relate to this because I had very positive results also
Thank you Dame Judy for doing this video.
Just had my second knee replacement. Current technology says it should last about 20 years.
I think now they last twenty years or so as long as you don't go berserk and take up jogging or something.
I hope your replacement went well! Hopefully you are at the rehab portion of the ordeal by now. It just keeps getting better, slowly and surely.
Had my knee replaced at 41..it was hell. Not gonna sugar-coat it. Give yourself a couple of years for complete recovery.
Yes to all this. Mine was termed ‘complex’ after the procedure, longer spike into femur, titanium and had to stabilise my knee joint as disfigured by it all luckily positive thinking has helped all through x
I am going into hospital to have a full knee replacement 5 weeks time and found this very reassuring thank you
I'm watching Judy Dench talking about knee surgery and I'm thinking, 15 minutes isn't enough.
