Awesome tips, this works amazing with the J-hook. You right, never ever pull it back on the tap, wait for a real pull back then grab the rod and pull and set the hook. Or we can use a circle hook as other folks mentioned here, it will set itself.

Or you just be the smart guy and buy circle hooks from the start and never have to set the hook.

It's a channel cat. There isn't any blues on the red river.
Blues have a more straight anal fin while the channels is more rounded out
