    The circle hook has become the popular choice among many catfish anglers. Circle hooks are designed to turn quickly and penetrate a cat's meaty outer mouth as it pulls against the tension of the rod. Because of the circle hooks design, most cats will get hooked in the corner of the mouth and not deep in the gut. For this reason, cats are more likely to stay hooked during the heat of battle, and they can be released with little or no harm.
    Let the rod and hook do the work for you. Do not jerk back to attempt to set the hook like one would do with a regular J style hook.
    It's important to use a fast action tipped rod when using circle hooks, a stiff heavy action rod is not recommended.
    Once the fish has taken the bait allow the rod to load heavy before attempting to reel it in assuring a solid hook up. For more info on catfishing visit discovercatfish...

    *These floats do what they say they do **enjoyable.fishing** recommend they come on and off easily and can be adjusted in seconds to adjust to the depth of the water you are fishing in. Used these with trout magnet lures and did really well with them in the stream!*

      +Steve Douglas The Catfish Dude Steve does Mustad not make an offset hook? If so why do you use this one and offset yourself? Also, where I fish I take what I can get, may be an eater or a big one, what would be a good size hook for both eaters and bigguns? Thanks

      On another video it said not to use offset hooks if you plan to catch and release because it does less damage to the fish. Is that true? I have a terrible time getting the hook out and don't want them to swallow it. Thanks.

    good tip about having a fast tip ,i would think it allows for slower hook being pulled through the mouth thus giving better hookset chances as opposed to a stiff tip that might rip it out too fast and make it miss the lip hookset

      @The Orange Knight actually i got mine for about 60 bucks but from a canadian tire store ,it is a 5'6" light action berkley lighting rod and reel combo

      @ARCSTREAMS 2 года назад

      @The Orange Knight i had it since 2020 and try to take good care with it,i had to go to so many stores to keep finding the right rod piece that i was happy with ,i cant tell you how many stores i went to ,maybe over 20 just till i was satisfied because each rod piece had some kind of defect or another i did not like so mine is very unique and you wont find anymore lol can't say how long something lasts ,i had my fathers old rods n reels and they lasted a long time but it depends how well you take care of them and not bag them around or step on them etc i recently got me a 7' med action ugly stick to go with a mitchell 300c reel, i am not happy with something on the reel so i will go to the stores to look for one im happy with and exchange it without anyone being the wiser ,im very fussy about stuff i buy ,they ave to be perfect for me,even the rod took me time to find the right pieces after swapping a few times ,many have the rod guides out of line or other such defects ,,i always take long time to inspect them before buying but even then i might miss something and find it at home then go back and swap it

    Yes thats what I do, the circle hook is designed to hook the fish as it turns to make a run to its hiding hole with your bait. There are couple things the fish will do when hooked and this important WATCH your pole tip and keep your line tight, one thing the fish will do once hooked it will fight the resistance from your fishing pole the other thing the fish will do once hooked is it will just make a flat out run and try to take your pole with him, this has happened to me before.

    Good video I'm a fellow catter myself and I swear by the circle hooks, I prefer the Gamaktsu circle hooks 4/0 to 8/0 size baited with cut creek chub, weighed down with 1 to 3 oz. flatspoon sinkers on a slip rig w/o a leader and I have caught alot of catfish with this method. My biggest so far was a 15lb. 30 inch Channel Cat I caught from the Muskingum River, i Southeastern Ohio.

    @cott10r could be your pole is too stiff, hook may be to big for the fish your attracting. try to slowly reel down on them as they are hitting, not sure if you have blues in your area but channel cats can sometime be more finicky and a soft tipped pole is a plus when using circle hooks with channel cats. good luck

    I can answer that for ya. I have a spinning reel I leave my bail shut and tight line it so whenever the fish tries to take off with it they hook themselves as they turn and watch your pole tip as the fish fights with and don't set the hook just reel it in as u pick up the pole and keep the rod tip up. If u let off the fish can work it self free. Use caution to catfish once hooked with a circle hook wil try to take your pole with it, if you don't grab it in time.

    Circles work great for blues, channels and when the flats are aggressive. When the flats are just chewing baits and light biting regular J hooks are much more effective. I quit using circles for flats last year and haven't missed a fish since.

      Why do you snell your hooks and use a mono leader?

    • @jarodmorris611
      @jarodmorris611 9 лет назад

      Steve Douglas The Catfish Dude so a circle hook would be fine for cut shad?

    • @thomasunknown9408
      @thomasunknown9408 9 лет назад

      +rynoshnglkmle
      The snell knot makes the circle hook rotate properly. The hook has to rotate in the fish's mouth in order to work properly. You will have a MUCH better hook up ration using the snell knot on your circle hook than using any other knot.
      The mono leader has a little bit of stretch to it. Sometimes people like to have what is called a shock leader when you're fishing for big fish. A HUGE fish can sometimes snap your line at the knot on the initial run if you don't have any stretch in your leader.

    • @thomasunknown9408
      @thomasunknown9408 9 лет назад +1

      +Jarod Morris
      Circle hooks are perfect for cut shad. Just make sure that you don't gob the bait on the hook. You want to leave your hook point exposed and you want to hook the bait fairly shallow so that you don't fill up the gap of the hook with bait.

    Steve first of all thanks for the amazing fishing videos you have posted and your input to the sport. WE fish up in the maumee and do well on 14-36 pound flat heads and 6-14 pound channels and always CPR. I was wondering, we river fish from the bank and we let the cats start yanking line off the reel with the clicker on and then we just bump the handle or slowly pull back on the rod and hook the fish up. we even use it for channel cats on spinning rigs with the drag turned loose, we let it pull line for a few seconds then hold the reel pull back slow and then click the drag down a few clicks. we get nearly all fish that pull line and nearly all lip hooks, how do you feel about this methood? you think we should just let them hit tell they hook themselves or let them run a little bit? further, we use offset circle hooks, is there a reason why you offset them your self? I know bending high carbon steel like that can cause it to be prone to crack propigation. Thanks again for the great videos and anyone against circle hooks are just not using them right. Ive gotten way more hooks up with them and they are way better on the CPR methoods used here. when you have 10 rods in the water between everyone how are you going to get up run to a rod getting a bite and set the hook and hope you dont kill it or miss it?

    • @SteveDouglastheCatfishDude
      @SteveDouglastheCatfishDude  9 лет назад +1

      ***** im not a fan of clickers Lucas but if it works for you and you have the confidence you should stick with them. i let the pole set the hook for me with my reel engaged and I off set the circle hooks because i have more confidence in my hook ups. Thank s for the comment.

      ***** We do the same thing you described and we also do the same thing Steve does. I think you need to do what you feel confident in. With your method I think you give the fish a little bit extra time to inhale the entire bait, resulting in a better hookset.

    by offsetting you are defeating the whole design purpose of this hook and will end up deep setting in the mouth no? also your bait might be heavy enough but to avoid foul hooking should you not have an angle to the bait when you pass it through the hook point so do not put the point through and through at a 90 but use a 45 deg angle to keep the bait from sliding up and covering your point and gap between point and shank

I know they get bigger in ought as number goes up but the difference here seems a lot.

      @@davidjones8353 one of the best catfish baits as long as it's in a tub like chicken livers . Not the frozen slab pack .Saturated in blood is the one you want..you will catch any breed catfish. Blues love it.. caught 15 pound flathead last night "Bloody beef" they love it. Catch 3-4 fish on the same piece of bait.

      There are a few reasons why people miss hook ups with circle hooks.
      #1 - hooking your bait properly. Hook the bait shallow, don't gob it on your hook. Leave the hook point exposed. Don't fill the gap of the hook with bait.
      #2 - Use a snell knot. The snell knot is the best knot to use with circle hooks because it helps the hook to rotate properly by the angle on which the line pulls on the eye of the hook.
      #3 - Don't set the hook. Let the fish hook himself.
