They prey on the food sources around them and generally seek and strive for a good meal, which is why they can get HUGE in size and catfish fishing can be such a thrill. When you first hook into a catfish, you might think you're snagged, but when your line starts to move and the drag starts to scream, you know you're hooked up with a real monster. I've been catfishing for 60yrs and agree with most everything you said. I have one piece of advice. I use a little less weight and a big bobber-stopper. I figure out where the bottom is and try to get a large live minnow/shad to be just inches off bottom. I've caught monsters that way. Really works well downstream from spillways. Getting bait to act alive and real near the bottom just rings their chow bell.
With bait that big, you really dont need a sinker. No wind, no current, sounds perfect for weightless cutbait

The weight isnt always for distance and keeping your bait still in heavy winds/rough current...it is also used to help set the hook when the fish picks up the bait and runs off with it

You might add a small float near the hook to keep the bait off the bottom, like a modified Santee Cooper rig. With a bait that big I'd suspect that the bait just sits on the bottom. Suspended about 6 -12 inches off the bottom might help.

Yea i always use my 12 foot Spell way rod and 60 pound test with a 200 pound still leader and 5oz of weight and a hole skipjack to fish in a pond because you never know

I don't have the elaborate setup you have but, 3 days ago my son and I caught a 4 and 10 catfish with a simple 6 gauge hook and clamp on lead sinker on a red worm. Im a novice so I hope to learn lots from ya.
That is very similar to the setup that I use. Instead of the three way swivel though I use a two way swivel and have a sinker slide on the main line. I also attach the hook to my leader with a snell knot before attaching it to the swivel. Great info to get out there. Nice to see the branch out to different species of fish.

I agree Joe, using a weight on the main line in a lake or a pond allows the fish to run with the bait without feeling he hook…until its too late.

When I am fishing catfish in the Chemung river in Elmira NY I put my hook on first and tie my sinker on below my hook

Mullet is the main bait we use in the south around Mobile delta. It's oily, fishy, and sturdy enough to withstand a catfish nibbling at it.

You should switch over to a 2way swivel on a slider rig. You will be able to detect more bites and have better hooksets. The three way swivel weight anchors down all your activity.
Hey just a tip when cat fishing at that time of the day there’s no need to cast that far out. The cats come inland to feed on baitfish. Cast out about 20yards and let it sit, btw chicken liver and garlic is what will get them channel cats going.

I just caught a ton a skipper jack the the other night while out on the boat. They put up a fight. I'm the bait catcher blue back heron I net them by the tons when they start swarming the boat. When we go fishing on lake hartwell we stay over 12 to 19 hours the later the better for the bait then by morning and right at sunrise its very magical!! I just caught my biggest striper it was 7 lbs lol..... Happy safe fishing everyone thanks for the vidoe!!

For catfish if your at a hole you trust and have fished before then stay until you catch but if your looking for a new spot if probably spend 25-30 min at each hole looking for the fish

Over here in Louisiana we catch 90 lb catfish by hand but i am 14 biggest cat i caught was bout 70 lb but 3oz sinker jeez i use 4 oz on the bottom of the river

always make sure your drag is set tight
Not sure I can continue watching--barely made it to the 3:15 mark.
2 major points of observation before stopping:
1: If it's really that hot--and unless you have one hell of a cast--you're on the wrong side of the pond. There's nothing alive roasting in that shallow exposed area.
2: Dude, that's just WAY TOO MUCH weight for a pond! You could anchor a boat with that thing. Unless you're using helium balloons as bait, you only need a medium-sized split-shot. I don't even use 3 ounces for the Pearl River. Half-ounce is the heaviest I carry, and those are reserved for the smaller and swifter streams.
To anyone looking for good tips on how to catfish--you won't find them here.
Best catfish bait I found mullet they love chopped mullet and shrimp
Skipjack and mullet have such strong oils and scent that the catfish will go out of their way to find a free meal!
Thought I recognized that pond. I grew up there and fished that pond many many times....creek also. We hunted the side of the mountain before any apartments were there. The power lines ran through my back yard.

For catfish bait I use half of cooked bacon with some red catfish spray or liquid tell me some better bait I could use.
A quarter stick a milk jug and half a concrete block. I can show you almost all of the fish in that pond..
And a welding machine

You’ll do much better if the weight will slide up and down above a barrel swivel. When you have a finicky bite the fish won’t feel the weight and drop the bait. Try it and you’ll agree. I use no more than 1 ounce weights. Unless I’m in heavy current. Like rivers.

Tip if you don’t have a rod holder use a crawfish hole that’s what I do
