Best Catfish Rig -- Santee Cooper Catfishing Rig -- How To Tie

- This is how to tie the santee cooper rig. This is the best catfishing rig for many people.
The santee cooper catfishing rig using a circle hook, peg float, and a heavy weight so suspend chunk bait and fresh fish off the bottom, making it easier for a big catfish to inhale.
This is the best catfishing rig because it uses the best bait for big catfish, suspends the catfish bait off the bottom for easy feeding, and uses a circle hook which naturally sets the hook into the fishes lips most of the time.
I have used this set up for quite a while,..very effective. And you can’t beat offset circle hooks for catfish!!!!
I am a beginner and this video has been one of the best, simpliest videos that I’ve found so far. Great explanation. Thank you
Knot controversy or not, I thought this was a very well done video. Good visual and a nice patient approach. This newbie appreciated that!
Thank you. I have since started experimenting with more knots. I have not noticed an increase in catching, but it's nice to have more knots in the arsenal.
I like that this rig can allow you to let the bait float upward and suspend off the bottom as high as you want keeping the bait in the fishs face and not get burried in weeds or in thick cover!
Wow definitely going to have to try this method out, I’ve seen them used with an old fashioned red/white bobber, but never a peg float. Nice video!
Hey thats what the weird floaty thing thats been sitting in my tackle box for over a year lol
😅
Hahahahha same bro same... 🙃
SAME
Same
I use 'em all the time.
Started fishing again last week after 10 years, caught about 20 decent sized channel catfish so far.
Where the fuck you been??🎣🎣🎣😂😂😂
Just started again after about 12 years of ocean fishin', caught some great fish in my lifetime.. Been fishing the local lake.. caught a baby cat lastnight.. 🎣
Great video , thanks for tip I caught my first 25 pounder with this set up.
Glad to hear that!
I've never tried that. Now it's on the list of things to experiment with! Thanks!
Definitely give it a try!
You won’t be disappointed
I just started using this rig more this summer and the amount of bigger fish (15lb-40lb) increased drastically from last year.
Awesome, I think it presents large fish an easy meal.
Thanks man! Been using Kentucky rigs and been doing well in the river where current is heavy but want to fish bayous and this seems like the better choice. Explained very well
Yeah that a Texas Catfish rig! I've been using it for over 20 years!
no that would be with a weight, bead, to swivel then leader to circle hook
I'm starting to realize I suck at fishing. Give me a creek in Oregon I will land big trout. Now I live in Florida.. game changer. 😐
Fishing is over rated . . I like CATCHING! 👍🐟😁
Now you live in Florida, with some of the best fishing in the world.
Poor fella. Lol
I discovered one of the best methods for catching catfish in my lake in Michigan is to drift or troll with bottom bouncers with a float near the bait. Like one would for fishing walleye.
Just FYI I use some small circle type hooks for catching shellcrakers ,bull heads even get some small carp and suckers for bait .
size 2-6 .
@Gene #4-#8 Gamakatsu You have to look thru some are circle, offset point and the single egg hook.
If you snell the hook it’ll hook up a lot better and don’t have to worry about the hook flopping around
I snelled them on the last trip and they were indeed quite effective.
Thanks for sharing bro! I'm going to make sure I use this Saturday morning bro.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge ! I am going to try this set up .
Good luck!
@@FishingExplained how can I make this rig effective for steelhead and salmon what do you recommend if possible?
It’s a very good setup!!!!!
I just snelled 30 #. Push line thru eye. Bring it up to make a loop at bottom. Use a straw and pen hull to warp line around hook 5x and run line thru loop and thru 5 wraps. Get it wet. Put line thru eye and pull both line and loop end and snug it. It's alittle awkward at first but just makes best snell ever.
Gonna try this in the am when I get off work to see how well it works. I usually get snags where I'm at the river sucks for bottom fishing.
Unfortunately fish like snags so it's a win lose situation!
@@FishingExplained is cut pirch good bait
Thank you....great instructional video!
If u want the circle hook to do as it was designed to do, a snell knot is the way to go to get the line to pull on the eye of the hook properly, not a palomar knot.
You are correct. I have yet to gain full confidence in my ability to consistently to a good snell. The palomar is strong and reliable, but does not compliment the mechanics of the circle hook functioning.
Its easy to do. Check out other videos on how to do it. Luke at Catfish and Carp has a great how to. So does Steve Douglas. You will be happy you did. Good video! Tight Lines!
what if I put line through the eye like a Snell pulls and then just tie a Palomar to the shank 😜
I agree. Hook needs a bend in shank behind eye also to snell properly. Done right the hook will roll the point around every time. Snell knot is easy with a little practice.
Tying a snell hook isn't that difficult. You just have to learn how to tie a sinch knot while wrapping the string around the shank of the hook. This not only will keep the circle hook inline with your lead line it will give you a better hook set with cut bait.
I’m your 1000th subscriber
Much appreciated!
I used a rig similar to this for saltwater. To keep the bait out of the seaweed and crabs
Great video and good job presenting the rig so we can see it!
Good video, sir. Just an FYI - you can get away with a lighter line/smaller diameter by using your drag correctly on your reel. This may help with detecting lighter bites from channel cats (if you fish for them). The current world record is a 140+ pound fish caught using 30 pound mono. I believe it was a blue catfish. Anyways, thanks for the video and the instruction!
I normally use 30 pound mono for the leader only, then 12-20 pound mono for the main line. No missed bites here :) The thicker leader helps with abrasion resistance while the lighter mainline casts well.
Well presented -- well done!
You ever wonder if that bright colored float next to your bait will spook fish? I love this setup, but I think I might paint my peg floats brown or something just to look like a little piece of wood. Very clear explanation. Thank uou
I like the way you think. I don't think catfish are very visual feeders, but anything we can do to make our rigs look more natural can only help.
With what kind of paint will you paint it brown? And do you think they will smell the paint?
Love these videos man. You do a great job.
Thanks man
Love the video and I'm gonna have to try this. Ready too see more. I'm sub'd
very good thanks for the help great video
Hope you try it out, it works great!
Good information. Easy to follow.
I'm a bass fisher man going catfishing and when it got the part about making a circuitry lope I said screw that tied a Palmer knot to a swivel on the line then from there and touch the hook to it and That's good enough
When I use this it always in touch with the weight
Great video. Thanks 💯
Great video, but where does the flat sinker "tie" into that setup?🤔
awesome video,
Caught my PB Southern Snakehead with chicken liver. Using this rig
Great video very informative what size peg float would recommend 2.5 or 3 inch
Definitely 3"
Does it have to be a specialized knot or can i use the ol fashioned trilene knot....you know...the one with several wraps around the main line then tighten it down
A snell knot is recommended with circle hooks to help them set hook properly. However, I have caught plenty of fish with curcle hooks using the "trilene" know and palomar knot.
Fishing Explained ....thanks for the info. Have never used this rig up. It makes sense..and i dang sure am going to try it
i think you meant to say the snell knot works better with lighter line not heavier right?
Are you supposed to snell the hook or can you?
Hey, great simple video. It served it’s purpose buddy! One question tho..i see you’re using both mono mainline and leader. Isn’t flouro mainline and mono leader the way to go, other than oc using what you already which ‘will’ work ..? Thx..what area you fish btw? 👍
Flouro's biggest advantage is that it is "invisible" underwater. It makes a greater difference with certain species, but I am not sure that catfish are very line shy to begin with.
Right now i’ve got 65# braid on. About to slap on some 17# fluoro shock leader...and swivel that to 20” of 30# mono for leader. I feel this will help my presentation, along with the right bait. Should be interesting and i hope it works..this will be my first time fishing in a few years.
**How many feet of shock leader would you recommend??
I know this is an old post but just wondering how come there’s only one stopper on the peg float? Thanks
Thanks man
Isn't that barrel swivel to small that the catfish mightbreak it? Shouldn't it be a size 1 or something? What size is that barrel swivel?
Is this rig better then the top bottom rig or the carolina rig? I am new to fishing. Also does it catch trout?
I would not recommend it for trout. It works better for larger, predatory fish that are not line-shy.
New suscriptor good information like
will it work if instead of the float putting a wine cork in the floats place ?
Never tried it before. The floats are only a couple dollars.
Can this rig with flat sinker be used for drift fishing or would a stick sinker be better
Good Job
The guy at turners recommended a bait holder hook for the small catfish at my local pond, but on a Santes cooper rig is it still as effective as a circle hook?
Doesn’t the chunk of bait float? Feel like it would still sit cause it’s heavy
You need to size the float properly for the size of bait you are using. Experiment by placing your rig in the water and observing before casting.
Yea it takes a few different size floats to figure it out cuz it most definitely does not always keep it off the bottom.
I may sound ignorant here, but if you used live bait, how would the live fish not carry the sinker off the bottom as it swam around?
Wanting to catch some flatheads at my friend’s pond, and I know they prefer something live. I was just wondering how the fish would stay on the bottom if it’s alive.
I guess it depends on the size bait you are using. Any small fish would struggle to drag around 3-5oz of weight.
Would this rig be suitable for smaller cats like Channels and Bullheads? I noticed the area where I fish where the kittens would bite light and won't take off with the bait like carp.
Outstanding
thx
Most catfish baits are pretty heavy, will the float still be effective
This will float a 3-4" chunk of bait. You need to adjust to float size to match the size of the bait.
Super
The rig is correct but but they never tell you you can use you can use a snap on float
Fishing explained. Thanks for the vid. I’m going to try it. That said, 1) Its my opinion that a size 7 hook for a 4 lb fish is absolutely excessive, unless you’re using a 2lb fish as bait. I’m guessing your response is you don’t know if your gonna catch the 20 lb’’r or the 4lb’r... for that see comment two... 2) It is general consensus in fishing community that hook size should 100% be based on size of bait, NOT size of fish you are trying to catch. I can attest consensus is valid based on many years of salt and freshwater fishing. Do you see the hooks used to catch 1000 lb tuna? Make sure when you make statements like hooks should be based on size of fish up are catching, add the disclaimer that it’s only your opinion. I do think a stronger hook is important though, with catfish.
The entire video is my opinion, no need for a disclaimer. I am simply giving a starting point as a 7/0 will effectively catch channel catfish from 2-20+ pounds. I am assuming the general consensus of "chunk bait" is a cut piece of full grown forage species in which case a 7/0 hook is an effective hook size. The rig can easily be adjusted to user's liking/preferences/fishing situation.
Fishing Explained I hear ya and again appreciate the time and effort u put into the video... was really just the hook should match the fish u are trying to catch comment... obv smaller hooks do less damage on fish (albeit not a whole lot less) so that’s really where I was coming from. Again, thanks bud!
Does the float supposed to go under water or float on the water
Underwater... imagine sinker on bottom then float holding bait up off the bottom about 2 foot
@Tyler Hughes is correct. For this particular rig, the float is only used to keep the bait slightly off the bottom.
Good video. You did say you are using a 7/0 circle hook?
I have landed 2lb-10+lb channel cats on a 7/0 hook, so I am confident that is a good base size. Keep in mind manufacturers vary with their hook sizing. I usually use eagle claw trokar circle hooks.
Fishing Explained We did get the 7/0 hooks and they work great. Thank you for the tip.
Does one need a peg float? Or just a float of any kind
A peg float is definitely preferred, but any sort of float would probably do the job.
So what stops the sinker from moving up the line 20ft when casting?
Physics. The lead is the heaviest, most aerodynamic part of the rig, therefore it leads the entire rig throughout the cast. When the rig hits the water, hold tension on the line, and it will behave the same as it sinks to the bottom.
Thanks!
Does it have to be a float can it be a regular bobber?
A bobber might work for a few minutes, but a float is a much better method. If you look them up, peg floats can be purchased online for cheap.
What keeps the line from floating bait off the bottom if your weight is free sliding on the line?
There is a swivel and stopper bead on the leader, so the hook is always a distance away from the weight.
Anyone know if this rig could be modified with a wire leader and used for alligator gar?
Where does the weight go?
Thread a sliding sinker onto the line, then attach the swivel of this rig to your mainline.
Why a Flat sinker ?
Palomar, not polymer. Good video
A darker background would help to see the knot tying.
Ya I know, I used a black background on my latest video.
Interesting rig. I guess you fish in the lake and have never caught a catfish over 20 pounds. No offense, but there are catfish in all lakes near the dam that could nearly swallow a person whole.
No offense, but this rig was named after a lake that holds 100+lb catfish. I guess the man eaters you speak of are bigger though...
Would this rig work for currents requiring a 8-10oz lead. Im trying to target striped bass from a pier scenario
It does work in current, but keep in mind you will need a larger float. As the current increases. The bait is more likely to get pulled to the bottom.
30 lb doesn't snell well?
It holds a easy snell or traditional snell pretty good. Knotless knots want to uncoil sometimes with mono
Sometimes I go as long as 3ft on my leader
Basically a Paternoster rig
Interesting, I have never heard of that one.
What do you use for a leader?
I use 30lb mono when fishing for small-medium channel cats.
Thanks
Anyone use the little rattler capsules in the cork? Pin in the bottom by the hook, and the rattler stuck into the top hole. No water pressure on the pin and noise to attract the fish.
I have used a rattling float. I'm sure it doesn't hurt but I can't say it increased my catch rate.
Eye hade my wife go to a hair supply got a variety of colors bed's.
Cheap costume jewelry is a great deal for beads
Awesome. My beads are also from the craft/jewelry section.
What kind of natural movement does bacon have?
I have never tried bacon as catfish bait.
Fishing Explained yea buddy bacon leaves a nice oil trail and is very tough so it stays on the hook. I typically coat it really good in strawberry koolaid For about 2days
I can see the potential for sure. Its soft and very fatty.
Have you tried the bacon yet?
Seems like the float would spook the fish.. I've never used a float that stayed submerged near the bottom.. I ordered a whole bag of cigar floats for my catfish tackle collection.. I have 2 oz. no-roll weights, hope my floats don't come to the surface.. lol 😂
Give it a try, you may like it! You would be surprised how large of a float it takes to float a large chunk of bait.
How much weight do you need to keep it down
That will rely heavily on the amount of current, but in a no current situation you only need about 2oz to keep the bait and float on the bottom.
What amount of weight ?
Depends on the current and the size of the float. I never go less than 3oz.
@@FishingExplained ok...3oz sounds good.
I'm in Missouri so I call that the half ass Missouri rig 🤣🤣🤣😂😂
this guy sounds like smi77y
I have to say I do hear some similarity lol
Will this work while anchored or drifting??
You can use it under both conditions.
Rig would work better if the hook was snelled
Correct
You are so beautiful! You do not need abs or any adjustments to your beautiful body! You are important! You have worth and meaning! To everyone who sees this! You are important! And Jesus love you!
You didn't say where you tie your sinker on
It is a slider tied on above above the swivel.
Why you're not using knot less knot
Technically a snell knot would be most effective for this rig when using a circle hook. However, using other knots does not render the rig innefective.
@@FishingExplained thnks for reply bro
Santee Cooper Rig? Guy, it's just a simply bottom rig. Been around forever, without any such name.
Essentially a bottom rig with a float, but commonly referred to as the "santee cooper" rig.
@@FishingExplained .. I have nine fishing books behind me (old & new), each describing this rig (sinker, float, etc) and none using the words ""santee cooper rig." There doesn't really appear to be a name. It's simply described related to common catfish rigs. However, I digress. You're obviously free to call it what you want. Take care.
Dwight Stewart Just Saying it was probably because whoever called it Santee Cooper, fished at that reservoir, and they have held catfish tournaments at that location forever.
You shouldn't have showed him how to put a Palomar knot on there you should have used a snell hook when you do the snow huh you start through the bottom then you go back through the top the whole purpose of that design hook is coming through the top and the end when you pull your mine it turns the hook into the fish's mouth with a Palomar you're just pulling on it and it's opening up the hook pulling it away from the fish always remember the Snell hook start through the bottom and go through the top and when you pull it try it on your arm both ways and you'll see it will hook in your skin which way good luck and keep on trying God bless
Has anyone tried this rig for other fish like strippers???
Yup, works great
That wont work here in Albany ga at the flint river. Catfishing here you going to use 20lb or 30lb they get big
It can be modified with heavy mono and float for the biggins.
I can't see the line you need a dark background
My newer videos I use a darker background for that reason
Anything you can give away?
Maybe one day if the channel continues to grow.
Fishing for crappies

Can't find a peg float in my area...:-(
They are readily available online.
Wine cork and a small drill bit is all you need to make one.
