  • The entire 2023 lineup of Volvo cars in the U.S. will consist of mild hybrid, hybrid or electric vehicles equipped with Google built-in, Volvo Car USA announced today.
With the popular XC90 and XC40 SUVs, as well as the V60 Cross Country, now receiving mild hybrid engines as standard (badged B4, B5, and B6), the Swedish luxury car brand is making good on its sustainability commitment to electrify its full range of vehicles. The effort reflects another step toward offering only pure electric vehicles by 2030 and being carbon neutral by 2040.
Regardless of lifestyle or access to charging, U.S. customers can now find an electrified Volvo car to fit their daily routines. For those without easy access to charging, mild hybrids offer increased efficiency over their predecessors, yet never need to be plugged in. New extended range plug-in hybrids offer all-electric driving in Pure mode while still providing a traditional gasoline-powered engine. And for those ready to leap directly into the future, the 402 horsepower, battery electric XC40 Recharge small luxury SUV and C40 Recharge luxury crossover offer zero tailpipe emissions.
Google built-in - already standard on the full-electric C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge, the XC60, S90, and V90 Cross Country-rolls out to the entire Volvo Cars range for model year 2023. As part of the Google ecosystem, Volvo cars now offer a seamless transition between digital life at home and on the phone, bringing customers’ digital lives, and much greater personalization, directly into their cars. With Google Assistant for voice control, Google Maps as the native navigation system, and the Google Play store for additional apps, every Volvo car is equipped with a best-in-class digital experience.
With the upgraded infotainment system comes the ability to receive over-the-air (OTA) updates. All new 2023 Volvo cars are capable of receiving and installing software upgrades remotely. As software updates are rolled out, each 2023 Volvo car is expected to continue to improve over its lifetime.
Several models also receive styling updates for the new model year. New colors, wheels, and interior options that include leather-free materials, are available across the range in almost every model. The S60, V60 and V60 Cross Country feature refreshed styling with a new front grille design and updated rear bumper inserts. And with the elimination of trim lines across all models, customers have the freedom to combine the exterior design, interior upholstery, and equipment level of their choice.

I just purchased a 2023 XC90 Ultimate and I am in love. It’s understated luxury that doesn’t make too much noise. Many see it as a “safe” car, very nondescript, but to me I see it as a fine wine that has aged very well over time.

I confirm each and every word! I've just purchased a 2024 XC90, more than perfect. Classy 🙂

The manual steering column adjustment is because Volvo put safety first, in case your pinned under the steering wheel in an accident you will be able to move it out of the way.

Just drove one today! Ultimate version.
Nice place to be and be seen. Noticed some tire noise which surprised but not terrible.
Piano black interior bits and unmatched wood on touching interior parts (ie not the same piece of wood) stood out as does the center twist start/stop key. Overly thick steering wheel..bmw influence. Unintuitive sun roof controls.
A bit floaty but comfortable for sure. 4cylinder at 60k is a hard pill to swallow imo. Truly deserves a 6 or small displacement 8.

I strongly agree, I tried few models since they started appearing in the dealer (SLC-UT) back around 2016, I still prefer my 2014 XC70 T6 specifically for the Turbo Six.

I remember the white 2017 XC90 T6 R-Design that Mike reviewed in 2017 which was nearly identical to the one I had just bought. Mine was in Passion Red and nearly identically equipped as the one Mike showed. I'm still enjoying driving it nearly 60,000 miles later. I still watch that video occasionally and I'd argue that particular 2017 XC90 looks better than this 2023 model. The now discontinued R-Design trim package was the best looking 2nd gen XC90 in my opinion. Check out that video and see if you all agree. Lastly, leave it to Mike to point out the 3rd row storage cubbies spiders that most RUclips reviewers overlook. 🕷🕷

How’s your infotainment system? I heard a lot of these, especially older ones, the screen lags quite a bit.

I self-bricked the infotainment system trying to install a navi update 3 years ago, apparently with a bad USB drive. My dealership replaced the old processor under warranty with the updated processor that Volvo released in 2019. My infotainment system rarely if ever lags and I haven't had any issues with it since 2020. Overall my XC90 has been relatively issue free in nearly 6 years of ownership. I did purchase the 7yr/100,00 mile extended warranty which I've yet to use 🤞🤞

Hi, thanks for your in-depth review. Much appreciated. Did you or anyone else ever figure out what those issues were with the Google system about the maps, etc. it really can't be possible that you have to sign in every time you get in the car and accept terms and conditions that would be kind of ridiculous.

The reason why the rear doors don't open more is because if both front end rear doors were to open simultaneously, they will collide.

I had opportunity to drive xc90 2023, and in EU for 100K, not to get massage seats, air suspension, automatic parking, automatic shaders, electric adjusted wheel!??? come on...
Not to mention the insides look like 2003 not 2023 with what they call "timeless" design, but it0s just layziness with them not wanting to put the work in new dashboard or new infotaiment system.
Hard pass on Volvo until these things change
