He seems to be much more friendly and easy going in mid to late 80s interviews, which I think lets his wit shine through a lot more. More endearing this way, imo
Anyone notice that this sort of entertainment is completely dead? I'm not talking so much about music videos as a format, but like programs that openly pissed on artists/songs? The last bastion of that attitude was probably Beavis & Butt-Head, then roast culture died. Nowadays, nobody has a bad word to say about fuckin anything; pop music is a homogeneous circle-jerk and TV is one big family. The honesty of just 'telling it like it is' is a lost art because everybody's fragile fuckin feelings are front and center with everything now, and nobody wants to be a social pariah for having a go at someone/something they just so happen to detest, either seriously or tongue-in-cheek. People from the 22nd century will look back on footage like this and scratch their heads as to why we allowed this "bullying" and "toxicity" to be broadcast into our homes.
Oddly enough, I never really thought of the prospect of a 'negative' reaction video. I guess it goes without saying that they do exist, but for the most part, when I think of the term "reaction video", I think of some nob with their jaw dropped, watching a movie trailer or whatever and then subsequently gushing over it. I've seen videos of people ripping the finished product a new asshole, but isn't that more of a "review" rather than a "reaction"?
If you dare to criticise anything now, even if it's constructive, you're labelled a troll or asked "If you don't like it why are you here?" everyone has to be sycophantic or they're not welcome.
John was close re The Bubblemen, who were the alter egos of Love & Rockets. Guitarist Daniel Ash had been doodling these alien bee-like creatures for years, indeed there is a seminal version on the cover of Bauhaus’s album Mask (Love & Rocket’s previous band). They’d often feature live as an extra support band and featured in many of the band’s videos.
John was spot on about the whole "video shot in the desert" thing that seemed to dominate so many videos in the mid to late '80's. I can't think of a single desert video that I actually liked. They were all boring as hell.
Gosh your right I was going to say What about that one from the famous video director who also did the movie Cell. He did that famous REM video. But after seeing it, it was really just shit, and didn't have any desert scenes like I remembered. Maybe Im just thinking of The Cell? HA!
Omg this interview is quality 👌.... fucking this old school none pc /try not be Butterton banter ... fucking brilliant from John... no filter no fucks given 👌🤣
Did you ever see Jaz Coleman on Night Network- he was watching videos with Chas Smash I think--I think the only one he liked was a band called Nasty Rox Inc which he said had an interesting bassline
John is like a number of other musicians who are far too intelligent for the media and so they tend to stick them in the one box only people like john play along with it. People wouldn't like john lydon's honesty. Pete burns was another who was far too smart for the media. They can't manipulate these people into being what they want them to be.
@@DMWBN3 yeah he actually only said " I've heard the rumours, you get up to all kinds of seediness " he never actually said that he was a pedophile. most people don't realise this, they all seem to think that he outed Savile for being a nonce, when he only said he'd heard rumours about seediness, BIG DIFFERENCE between saying that and actually outing him for touching kids
There was lots of shit around, but also lots of interesting stuff too. Plus, you could watch a band for a reasonable price, smoke weed in the venue and none of the crowd were holding phones in the air. There was total shit all over the place, and clothes were pretty shit too. The shit just made the quality shine a lot brighter.
no one says that every new form of music that comes into business, every fashion, whether it's punk, rock or anything, always follows the Masonic lobby guidelines, which every year turn out new fashions, new groups, to convince the masses to be against the current system ..... then there are the characters like John Lydon, who probably really believe in their art, but in reality they are doing, consciously or not, what Freemasonry wants: to go against every Christian teaching to keep people away from Jesus ... I remind everyone that the Masons hate Jesus and worship Lucifer ... it seems like a fantasy, but it is reality!
The Kylie Minogue bit had me 🤣

Totally agree. He was a reporter’s worst nightmare in the 70’s- early 80’s. Way too angry and confrontational back then.
Am loving Mr Lydon's hair and, as always, his brutal honesty
JL has always been refreshingly honest even if it was a detriment to him.
Strange comment slightly weird
@@matimus100 how so?

Actually, that is why reaction videos on RUclips are so popular. Its the same thing but anyone can do it.

John's silence after the Jonathan King mention said it all.

John Lydons teeth look very different here.
What is the point of hearing the guests articulate their critiques when they edit out the sound to the music videos they areccommenting on?
Copyright issues. If you want the full experience, open a new window and search for the video on RUclips.
Because this upload is about the commentary, not the music videos themselves.
don't remember this show at all.

It was a truly ghastly year. I don't think it has improved overall since then.
a decent year for extreme metal not much else rock was peaking

I agree with you about the masons and John, if he wasn’t involved he wouldn’t still be invited on mainstream tv,
