Mark was a proper character. On occasions i met him at gigs he was really genuine guy, he just didn't have time for bullshitters, arse lickers or pretenders. The interviewer is clearly a middle class music fan and isn't a student type pretending to be some working class caricature to try and impress. As long as you was yourself and didn't pretend to be something otherwise, mark would have all the time in the world for you as one human being to another. Try and pull a fast on him and you would be shut down immidately, followed by the most witty and brutally honest tongue lashing you could ever expect to receive in 20 lifetimes.
The interviewer at one point was intimating that Prince is somehow superior to Michael Jackson and Mark E Smith was having none of it even if it was just to disagree with him on something the interviewer seemed too keen to stress. I don't know... the interviewer seemed a bit up himself and a bit condescending to me but only a tad.
the only 2 bands who actually made good/better music after all these years were The Fall and arguably Buzzcocks, who had some bloody great albums in the 90s.
IKR? No coincidence that this nice, relaxed Mark steered the band through their most 'chart-friendly' phase. Maybe snagging Brix made him as happy as he'd ever be and he just felt less argumentative.Love conquers all.EVEN Mark E!
It's astonishing how fast he went down hill after Brix left him. I think she restrained his more self distructive qualities. Also think he was more reliant on her than he liked to let on and it kinda broke him when she left
this is a really nice interview. I reckon he enjoyed it because it was about a specific subject - Here's this song, what do you think of it. No open-ended unanswerable questions.
mark's picks: 1. dollar - "it's nature's way (no problem)" 2. s express - "superfly guy" 3. christian death - "church of no return" 4. prince - "glam slam" 5. pop will eat itself - "def con one" 6. emma ridley - "school's out"
Top bloke - I met MES after a Fall gig at Warwick Uni a couple of years before this interview, around the time of Bend Sinister - didn’t chat long, but he was more approachable than you might expect.
Really interesting, thanks for uploading- the Chritian Death "Banned lp" is a reference to some problems they had with the use of swastikas on a sleeve...
Thanks for sharing. Not sure I agree with all the comments saying the interviewer is 'tit' or a 'twat', at any rate he seemed to do a good job of getting Mark to relax and open up.
That's the thing about mark you could never really tell if was taking the piss. He's pretty convincing here but the choices of artists appear to be a big joke.
@@front2427 I’m not actually sure I think he’s more open minded than his public persona. He was an artist it’s clear he drew inspiration from many sources
Interviewer does a top job here of getting into MES's head on the right level... They're like two blokes at the bar from the 7th minute. Great interview
So mad I never got to see the Fall :( I was always indisposed for some reason when they were touring the US. I've been a fan since '86 or '87... my first Fall experience was a third generation cassette tape with The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall.
They get to pick from the stations list of videos which in turn are selected by the labels "here's 20 videos pick your 5 favourites, I don't like any of them, well just pick the 5 you hate the least"
I don’t think he is. Bucks Fizz and Dollar made some great pop records and most indie artists of any credibility appreciated that (see Julian Cope on following Bucks Fizz on TOTP while coming up on acid for example, he thought they were brilliant.)
Its easy to keep consistancy when what you are producing is crap! I once had a neighbour who constantly played The Fall records and very loudly, it drove everyone mad, I was at work during the day and so gad some respite from it but one other neighbour worked night shift and so he needed to sleep during the daytime, the guy who played The Fall was on the dole and so was in most of the time, anyhow he ended up being evicted.
I think what Mark would like to say in answer to questions about others making music is what David Bowie said to Russell Harry in 1973 'I'm not in an Olympics'
Impressed by the interviewer. If you can get Mark E Smith so relaxed that he’s telling you jokes: you’re doing well.
Mark was a proper character. On occasions i met him at gigs he was really genuine guy, he just didn't have time for bullshitters, arse lickers or pretenders. The two times I spent with him he was just like he is in this interview. Cool as F.
Interviewer: So tell us about Dollar.
MES: I like Dollar, I'm quite into 'em.
Interviewer: You're a Dollar fan?
MES: Not really, no.
This interviewer was fantastic. Not sucking up or intimidated. That's why it's so relaxed- a mutual level of respect
Yeah. MES is a bit prickly, but he seems like he's also up for a nice little conversation. I enjoyed the vibe of this interview.
Disagree, I think he was a tool
Never seen the guy before but I like his interview style.

Prince. 'A young lad in a studio.' Bless him.
Never seen this interview before. Cheers for uploading! Good stuff.
“We are art” ....... Mark was spot on!
I went off the Fall for twenty years and came back. They just got better, while everyone else got worse.
the only 2 bands who actually made good/better music after all these years were The Fall and arguably Buzzcocks, who had some bloody great albums in the 90s.
What's your point??
I can understand going off beef curry or bell bottoms but cannae imagine going off The Fall.
Life would be so empty...
Wow, an interview were Mark actually seems quite nice 😂! R.I.P. a true original.
maybe it was his true personality to be nice, he seemed a lot kinder in his old age
IKR?

Makes me wish he had backed off on the booze and not turned to mush
Never has there been or will there be a man who mumbles pure genius like Mark E Smith. RIP
This is how i want to remember MES. Looking sharp , soberish(might be speeding) eloquent , educated and sharp as a tack.
"might be speeding" - watch how his mouth twists - but yeah this is a golden MES moment for sure
"might be speeding" lol
My missus asked “ is that Richard Madeley ? “ 🙄
Smith is so good. Him and lemmy are the full blown honest
It's astonishing how fast he went down hill after Brix left him.
I think she restrained his more self distructive qualities. Also think he was more reliant on her than he liked to let on and it kinda broke him when she left
This is total television gold! Mark is so funny and I love the interviewer as well.
The interviewer has sartorial elegance by the bucket load haha
MES: we are art. INTERVIEWER: should you be hung on a wall? MES: no, we should be subsidised more. 😂😂🤞🏼
"You should be hung in an art gallery?"
Mark E Smith was sharp as a razor blade 😂
He was a class act, genuinely with genuine people
I loved that response. 💪🏼
1988's 'The Frenz Experiment' was the first Fall album I bought. That wasn't until 1992, though. I love that album.
Amazing interview! Love Mark’s and the host’s dynamic.
this is a really nice interview. I reckon he enjoyed it because it was about a specific subject - Here's this song, what do you think of it. No open-ended unanswerable questions.
Good point. He must have got so completely bored with vacuous and nervy media strivers.
mark's picks:

This was GREAT! And great interviewer.
Mark seems really relaxed here in the interview.
Just married with an attractive and adoring Brix.

I love Mark he has my sense of humour
Correction, you have HIS sense of humour.
He was right about Dollar. They represent Britain. Still, to this day
This is actually a decent interview
Thanks for sharing. Not sure I agree with all the comments saying the interviewer is 'tit' or a 'twat', at any rate he seemed to do a good job of getting Mark to relax and open up.
True. There aren't too many interviews with Mark that go so well.
Totally agree 👍
He did make a fucking good joke "you should be hung in a gallery" deliberate or not, he was relaxed enough to let that come out of him.
Seemed like he was taken aback at first, but figured out what MES is all about early on and kept his cool. Respect.

killer klip!! thank U!

Mark E Smith: the greatest artist i can understand 2/3rds of what they're saying RIP
Anybody know the name of the interviewer? He's pretty good. Well informed, confident, not the usual obvious line of questions.
He's quite charming here.
Enduring over 10 years 👌
I'd rather see a happy Mark than a belligerent one. Interviews aren't cringe worthy.

I saw them 10 times between 1985-2016 including the night I lost my virginity
(for the love of smith), please don’t take this down!!!
Dollar, Bucks Fizz.....I think Mark is pulling this bloke’s plonker!!

The revenge of Leicester Polytechnic! Brilliant!
Seen him live 1996 phoneix festival very good 👍
Very young looking, I remember night network the start of all thru the night TV
Over 2000 views , probably more now than at the time it was originally seen !
Haha yes crazy this one has a life of its own but then that could easily describe the wonder that is Mark E Smith.
@Mark Richardson A quick Google tells me Paul Thompson
Find it odd people are hating on the interviewer.
Mark was quite handsome as a young man!
"The Revenge of Leicester Polytechnic!"
MIIIAAOWW!!!
Mark should have worked with Dollar - missed opportunity there.
Nicholas Watson 😂
"Pseudo political intellectual sort of groups" "What, like The Fall you mean?"

Mark on his best behaviour
another gem that will no doubt be taken down within 2 days
Well so much for that prediction
Another 2 years have passed. Still not taken down.😂
i'd have LOVED to see mark e smith debate johnny lie-don
He smoked nick cave in a joint interview it was print
JS Thompson I would imagine!

love him hate him put up with him miss him
Looking at the host, you'd expect him to be a twat but he bounces off Mr Smith surprisingly well. RIP MES.
So this must be just a little before smoking and drinking came back to hit him like fifteen Mack trucks.
A hip priest
Genius 💙
God I wish he was still here! Not many artists make as much sense and get so much airtime. Definitely not now
He looks like Richard Madeley
He doesn't think about IT that much that's why he's so good at Clapham Junction.
jesus the interviewer really reminds me of gog from peepshow
Used to watch Night Network all the time: saviour of the chronic insomniac. Had quite a crush on this interviewer at one time.
I miss TV like this where you had shows dedicated to music that wasn't always mainstream why did TV become so shit in recent years?

He looks the spit of Paul McCartney at times in this clip.
He looks like a young Paul McCartney, crossed with an alien, during this phase.
Love that Mark always appreciated space and indeed good architecture (a word too big for some, but not Mark) X
Who is this guy? He's a great interviewer, not many that goes toe to toe with MES like that. Can't remember seeing him on anything else
white jeans. Nice.
Miss him.
Richard Madeleys pipsquek brother
There will never be another Mark E Smith. You get Creeper, who try to imitate The Cure and The Smiths, but not The Fall.
He's cute honestly
Paul Thompson. Love ya!
Are you related?
the handsome era!
Great interview. Had Mark relaxed. But don’t know why he was playing so passive aggressive lol
Wealdstone Raider tribute act
