  • John Aldridge may have been at Anfield for only a short time, but it is a testament to his ability that he is considered one of the best goalscorers to wear a red jersey.
He was an integral part of Liverpool's 1987-88 Championship winning side - scoring 26 league goals as the team went 29 games without defeat.

They were insane players and it was a privilege to watch them. Even the likes of Venison, Abblett (RIP), Rosenthal, Hysen, Mike Marsh, Burrows, and a few others were great squad players. Miss those time I must admit. If only I had a time machine.

Players like Aldridge are priceless. Not a gifted all round footballer but he had the ability to do the most difficult thing in football.
How many players are there in the modern game who score as consistently as he did?
He was still averaging better than one in two in his late thirties in the Championship for Tranmere. Has an incredible career record.

Magnificent football from that Liverpool side. John Barnes - John Aldridge - Peter Berdsley probably the best attacking line in the history of the sport. Look at the pace of the game, look at the long passes, pure quality and entertainment. Today's game is a joke compared to what was played 30 years ago.
Those who say Messi is the greatest player in history haven't seen John Barnes.

    • @JohnnyC01

The reason why they don't talk about Barnes is prabably because Liverpool was banned from european football that time and he couldn't show his class in the european cup.

John Aldridge was just as integral to this team as any other Liverpool player. I recall thinking as a 10 year old when Rush moved to Juve: "Who the hell is going to replace him" and not only did he look like Rush, he was arguably as good as him during his time there. It's funny because i was actually disappointed when Rush rejoined because I knew he'd only go on and replace a man who gave us so much during that time. So it was a mixed bag of emotions. My only crititicism of him was that penalty miss in the 88 Cup final. It was a pretty tame effort. He was normally so confident with those but the run up he took against Beasant just didn't look right.

He probably wasn't going to get first team football with Rush back, who was also 3 years younger than Aldo. And back then, football wasn't as much of a squad game as it is now. Nevertheless, I was also disappointed when he left, although not on the same level as when Beardsley left. We replaced Aldridge but you couldn't replace Beardsley. That really was scandalous.
