  • The 1973 UEFA Cup Final - There had been heavy rain in Liverpool in the week before the first leg, nevertheless, Austrian referee Erich Linemayr decided that the first leg on 9 May would still go ahead. Minutes into the match it was apparent that the conditions were unplayable, the rain had intensified following the kick-off and the players were unable to pass the ball to each other. The referee took the decision to abandon the game after 27 minutes with the match to be played the next day.
    The 27 minutes that had been played the previous day had given Liverpool manager Bill Shankly an insight into how to beat Borussia. He noted that defender Günter Netzer was suspect in the air, to exploit this he decided to omit Brian Hall in place of John Toshack, whom Shankly believed would exploit this weakness.
    Watched by a crowd of 41,169 at Anfield, Liverpool took the lead in the first leg when Kevin Keegan scored in the 21st minute. Another goal by Keegan in the first half, extended Liverpool's lead and a further goal by Larry Lloyd meant Liverpool won the first leg 3--0. Therefore, in the second leg at the Bökelbergstadion, Liverpool had to avoid losing by three clear goals to win the competition. A crowd of 34,905 watched Borussia take the lead in the 29th minute courtesy of a Jupp Heynckes goal, he scored again 11 minutes later to double Borussia's lead. Borussia were unable to find the third goal they needed to take the match into extra-time and won the second leg 2--0. Thus, Liverpool won the final 3--2 on aggregate to win their first European trophy.

    I was at this game in the Anfield Road end. The first game was abandoned and was replayed the night after. No messing around then! This was when most people paid at the turnstile to get in and there were no ticket stubs or rainchecks given out. Given no way to know who has already paid Liverpool made entry just 10p for the replayed game. So some people saw a UEFA cup final for just 10p (I think it was 40p to stand on the terrace for the first game, but different from today !)

    Jupp heyinkes was world class goal scorer, unfortunately for him there was Gerd Muller in Germany at that time.

    Incredible atmosphere in Anfield Road, the noise of the crowd is astonishing, i think that Borussia's players were intimidated by this barbaric and poetic wall of sound. Mythopoetic Football

    Thanks for uploading this piece of history. I'm reading "Red or Dead" now which details Shankly's rise and tenure with LFC and I just finished this chapter last night. They won the league and they won the European cup. The start of something really big.

    I watched this match on a black an white screen, I was 11 years old. The defender on Tosh was Reiner Bonhof (not Netzer). The first match unplayed till the end was very particular The next day, the match won by the reds 3-0 made me the LFC fan I'm today... Kind regards of Belgium

      Very similar to me Giuseppe, for me it was 76 UEFA Final against Brugge. Two great games, great atmosphere. I was born in Brussels of Italian descent and Giorgio Ghezzi who played for Inter was a cousin of my dad, should have become an Inter fan but LFC is just so special. Moved to England in 79 so I've had plenty of opportunities to watch LFC.

    It is very peculiar that the Germans (not only Bonhof) couldn't jump in the wet penalty area. Shankly and Toshack won the game in a field full of mad in the penalty areas.

    See John Toshack's comments on this match in the link below, interesting stuff. The final might have turned out differently if he hadn't challenged Shankly on his team selection. Sounds like Bill Shankly put his ego to one side and took on board Toshack's advice. Perhaps that's part of what made him a great manager, being willing to change his mind when one of his players challenges him for the right reasons ruclips.net/video/4MjITa6Kbs8/видео.html

      Apparently the Liverpool first tie was abandoned due to torrential rain after 20 minutes an replayed the next day which is why the pitch was so bad. This happening was a game changer and resulted in a tactical switch according to John Toshack's story ruclips.net/video/4MjITa6Kbs8/видео.html

    Unfortunately Borussia couldn't cope with Liverpool's aerial power here, but a Gunter Netzer inspired performance gave them a demonstration of real football in the return leg but they were edged out 3-2 on aggregate. At this stage in their history Liverpool were only really a legend in the mind of Shankly and Scousers who still missed the Beatles.

    • @lyndoncmp5751
      @lyndoncmp5751 3 года назад +3

      At this stage, even Bayern weren't yet legends either.
      The aerial threat, Liverpool didn't do too much of that, came about due to twenty mins of the abandoned game where Shanks saw that Gladbach couldn't handle it.
      That first Liverpool goal was the best goal of the entire two legged final. An absolute classic.
