Homemade Mission to Mars by Tom Sachs

- Artist Tom Sachs has recreated an entire four week mission to Mars with nothing but household objects. Working with Nasa and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, his studio created go-kart rovers, wooden rockets, and space sculptures. All of this makes his Park Ave. Armory (NYC) live show "Space Program: Mars" quite the adventure.

Ironically, in an age when space programs are taken for granted of, people are also becoming less and less actually interested in it because of the amount of fancy tech that goes in it just doesn't hold people's short attention spans. This goes back to the actual heart of real space programs, underneath all that shine; the actual journey that all those involve go through and the creativity and ingenuity needed. This is literally the ultimate cardboard spaceship experience we had as children.
This is like the grown up version of the refrigerator box rocket in that back yard that you make your brother shake at lift off.
"the government will crush your spirit," true words that!
Do you honestly not have any admiration for the amount of detail put into this project? Do you find all reenactments/movies/plays hipster bullshit? You have playlists on your channel labeled "FOOD!" and "Workouts!!!", that gives me quite a good indication for the type of mindset you have.
Please do more on Tom sachs
This is the most elaborate, nerdy cosplay ever.
just because u don't understand it doesn't mean it's not a documentary, its just like the episodes involving food
3:44 The LM's on the moon aren't complete and freestanding. They're all missing the ascent stage.
What he means is that every “static display” you have seen is built around a big fat pole or column where there shouldn’t be one.
those were some good looking astronauts !
Did anyone else notice the bottle of vodka and children's xylophone sitting by that guy?
man i wish i could hang out with these guys when i use to be a small kid with my neighborhood friends
1:28 god damn she looks like Natalie Portman :) Anyway, this is the ultimate installation and performance art piece
She’s so fine
its a small step backwards for politicians, its a giant leap backwards for mankind
tequila vodka and whiskey bar, everything the two astronauts willl need
Is that Stolichnaya on his desk? 3:51
I would laugh so hard if the first people who got to mars were all pissed as farts!
More real than the one we paid for! At least they admit they can't go into "outer space".
how is this a documentary again?
love you vice
Really cool.
Hi Mary!
a mission to mars requires nothing more than locking 4 people in a small room for months...any volunteers?
Did i click an Onion video by Accident?
water is still on mars, well ice I believe.
One thing where Tom Sach's "NASA" cannot compete, the raw power of a rocket engine on launch and how awesome it is to witness.
what did he mean when he said dont get a motorcycle license???
I think your over-exaggerating this whole thing a bit. Its not like NASA has actually hired these people to make a 'play' for them, because of the budget cuts, which is what your proposing with that comment.... Its a bunch of independent artists, which have been lucky enough to have *some* contact with a few people who work for the Jet propulsion lab.
Also inspiration is an important thing, without it there would be a lot less people interested in becoming our future scientists & engineers.
in the credits it says Van Niestat, should've been Neistat. Nonetheless awesome video!
yea also its clear casey copied toms creative style
I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that artists know little about science. Sure they use different parts of the brain and are very different, but people can have more than one skill. Many artists are very interested in science based work, and this guy clearly knows his stuff and has done his research!
...blunt pumps and jack daniels? let's go.
This looks like it would be fun high.
WOW
This is brilliant, if you're confused check out the work of Tom Sachs and the Neistat brothers, particularly Casey Neistat
Casey isn't even that involved with Sachs it's Van who works with Tom
+homayoon ershadi yes you're right, but Casey also worked for Tom for a quite a while
+homayoon ershadi you're wrong, Casey also worked with tom.
It's Van from the neistat brothers
thanks for sharing we all care
too funny, brilliant!
Van Neistat... PROPAGANDIST
I'm Rick James BIIATCH!!!
film maker can borrow this for making movies~
After that, he said "ride safe but don't get involved in the system". I think he meant to go ahead and do things, but without asking for too much permission.
Any one else find it ironic how we cant even conquer the pressure of the deepest parts of the ocean or build on the moon but we want to skip to mars ??
Less Science = Less Intelligence
How the fuck are they gonna smoke in an all oxygen environment??? It's madness!!!
Also I dont see what you mind about him, he is clearly just playing around, but he is making aware of NASA whose budget has gone down significantly, I think its great that he bothers
Bye bye real NASA. If these guys can do this, private industry is the way to go!
Curiosity is still going strong on Mars in freaking 2021. In a few days the perseverencs rover will land on Mars
0:50 This spirited man spouts propaganda
Mary is a beautiful astronaut.
If all this is worth it if one 5 year old is inspired by this than you are need to get your priorities in order
far out man
Yeah we derived a lot from learning about space, but going to mars shouldn't be a priority during a moment when we can't even handle matters at earth. We have enough resources and the agricultural technology for everyone to live independently, but the resources are never distributed equally. Progress isn't just increasing the pool of knowledge. It is also raising the living standards for humanity. You can decide for yourself which should take priority.
It's depressing that these sad, self-absorbed individuals are more pioneering than any modern space program.
Don’t get a motorcycle license?!???
God fucking dammit, leave it to the RUclips community to outright not fucking understand art. Bravo.
Martín Brandán - only a hipster thinks this art!
Every time I take a shit .. that's art! No two will ever be the same... no two of mine and no two of yours and mine.... that's fucking "art"! Not these guys that never grew up and a actually made a fucking difference in the world!
you are right on, lol
it would take thousands of years...
Cocaine is a hell of a drug!!!
you saw this problem exemplified by the soviet union - they achieved what you are talking about - equal education, pay etc - and they enjoyed great early success but once they needed to grow new technology they foundered. this was because they lacked an organic focus of capital, with goals given instead by a state run by politicians instead of professionals.
I'm all for a bit of social welfare and better education, but we need rich people with ambition as much as we need a well run state.
so sad, but true....soon all NASA missions will be simulated using LEGO...err, make that Mega Bloks...Lego's are probably out of NASA's budget.
Everyone's bashing an attempt to do some
thing significant, in other news, water is wet.
as for the thing about the environment; yes, we should have a more ordered and centralised approach to maintaining and improving the balance of the ecosystem, this is a different issue.
The fact is that there are not enough resources for everyone to do what they want to do, or even what they think they do best. Until there are, we need a system to get people to do stuff they wouldn't otherwise do.
the current system is too un-equal, but to remove inequality itself is fantasy.
598 birds have been killed by space launches this year.
kid's xylophone and booze
what the song playing at 4:49?
You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire - Queens of the Stone Age
Its cool that a group of people are getting together to work on this, but when its a bunch of hipster art kids I just have no hope for it. This will go no where.
This guy could be mad, but how would we know the difference?
This is something we do when we have the luxury of doing so... not when nearly a sixth of the population is starving along with a global economic decline...
SOME PEOPLE THINK THIS PERFORMANCE OF A SPACE PROGRAM IS SILLY. BUT WAS STAR TREK SILLY? ITS INSPIRATION MADE MANY PEOPLE JOIN NASA. ART INFLUENCED APPLE AND STEVE JOBS. GIVE THESE GUY A F*CKIN BREAK.😊
specialisation is by its very nature un-equal, and it is through specialisation that we have achieved anything meanigful. so far from being bad for us, you could argue that a level of in-equality is entirely necessary.
What makes you think we'd somehow be better off without money? The desire for material gain has been the principle driver behing every economy and every technology advance throughout all history.
I'm sorry but you're just deluding yourself.
increasing the pool of knowledge in certain fields, knowing more about what's on mars had no coalition to starving people on earth involuntarily funding space programs. I'm not saying space programs are unnecessary, but it's not our priority. And your argument is laughable. You think space programs are going to unite people? People couldn't give two shits, they will still war and hate. Also increase the pool of knowledge on weapons, according to your logic, that also improves living standards.
?
When this conks out and is a waste of time and money you could always sell your set to some porno company. I dont think ive seen one based on mars
I'm glad they still fake missions.
My problem is there aren't sandwiches on the moon so NASA would never send ladies because what would the bring back? Besides that this seems solid.
Looks more to be about drinking than any real science. Weird project. Surely impressive, but as someone said: hipster shit
that was quite boring. What's going on with the Pizza Mafia?
oh look a bunch of adult children play acting they have anything worthwhile to contribute to society.
standards of living are higher post war than pre war - though fact - deal with it.
But I'm not proposing we go to war, I'm proposing we go to space.
If everyone is the same then people have nothing to aspire to. I'm not saying we shouldn't bring in a bit more equal money distribution, but you need rich people, rich places and reaching for the stars if you are going to have any progress. These are not mutually exclusive goals.
if you want to cut anything, cut military before space spending
Talk about a waste of resources.
Tom Sachs is so repetitive. Only has one style and just applies it to different self indulgent projects over and over. If you've seen one video of his work you've seen them all )-8
what? why?
i subscribed to vice because of the amazing documentaries about world events... not this.. i don't even know how vice goes from interviewing hamas leaders, north Korean loggers in Russia, underground slum dwellers and drug dealers in Columbia...... to this
This is so stupid it hurts.
But why?...
Yup, that does it. I am officially unsubscribing to VICE.
Just like the moon landing! made in a studio
Any space program with Queens of the Stone Age playing in the background will get funding from me when i'm a millionaire.
THIS IS FALSE THE BEST SPACE PROGRAM IS KERBAL SPACE PROGRAM!
Would much rather see Vice interview dudes who ACTUALLY made the Mars Rover!!!
wtf is this dude talking about...USED to be water on MARS?...LOL....what the FU&* do you call the big block of frozen mass on its north pole? What the hell do you think formed its valleys of erosion? I am 3:44 into the video, and wondering if this is a spoof, or a REAL documentary/video.....
Lol the water's gone dumbass, EXCEPT for the ice cap.
...than we'd be years and years more advanced. i completely agree that the wars need to stop, but that has nothing to do with money. war needs to stop because war is damaging in a million different ways. most importantly; it brings us further apart. we dont need rich people, we need equality, and we need to give those that arent fortunate, a chance to not just survive, but thrive. thats when we will become what we are intended to be.
you need rich people, rich places and reaching for the stars if you're going to have any progress? that couldnt be more incorrect. the very fact that we have people who are treated like, and whom act like royalty, is the exact root of problem with our civilization not advancing quicker than it is. you cant become great when everyone isnt on the same page. companies dont get rich being seperated in ideas and goals. id argue that if everyone had an equal chance from birth to achieve their goals..
you don't improve medecin by investing more in doctors, all branches of science are involved, so you need to focus on something which encompasses all those branches if you want to see meaningful improvement. a focus which inspires people like space travel is only a good thing, and IT WILL unite people, just not all people.
the technology developed for wars plainly does benefit living standards, really obviously, but I would prefer a space program, which is cheaper and faster.
In a narcissistic poser fantasy, he would be the astronaught, but he chose to be a scientist watching the monitors, he is a huge geek ffs!!
is this some kinda fuckin joke?? I thought I was getting trolled with the whole liquor + marlboro but then he was serious...
this is maybe one of the greatest things i've seen on youtube....
The cool kids have gone mad.
Overly propagandized. They might be lost forever.
lets play pretend
don't get a motorcycle licence, that's what I learned. Ride safe, but don't get involved in the system.
wut
NASA must be pretty bored to be helping some artists make a fake Mars landind
Wait what are they accomplishing? I don't get what there doing..
