Those sound awesome!!! Original EVH EBMM owner here too! Amazing guitars!!!
The Pariah Poundcake pickups cleared the stock DiMarzio’s by a mile!! Maybe the original set have weakened over the years, but it was literally no comparison. I’m amazed at how much different and better the Pariah’s sound!! Blown away, thank you. 🤘
5:20 to 5:37 is the true EVH music man '91 to '95 tone. Toggle switch mid position = his fat tone people love to talk about. So so clear on his live sounds from that era especially on the Balance tour 💯
Yes he used the bridge pick up but mostly during his solo performances to hit those insane pinch harmonics.
There's just some kinda magic juju in the Music Man Dimarzio pups it's uncanny, however the Poundcake pups sound great! I have a Pariah Pasadena black and it's killer as well. The best aftermarket pups for a Music Man EVH style guitar seem to be the AT-1 & Air Norton and the Poundcake set. Great video Jeremy and nice job Pariah!!
Wish EVH had stuck with the Music Man loved they tone and it looked so cool
Agreed
He would have but Sterling Ball didn’t like EVH screwing his wife
Definitely, the Music Man EVH guitars are something special for sure. I have 3 Axis guitars and love them all!
@@donsmith5385 really?? I never heard that.
@@kennethsanders3165 yeah that’s why EVH started making guitars at Peavey, the Peavey Wolfgang was a Hartley Peavey design, hence why they can still produce it
Hey Jeremy, First you have now sold me on the tone of the 5150 ICONIC (Thanks), Second, The poundcakes sound amazing (the palyer certainly has a lot to do with that). I appreciate your demos, great job as always, Thanks Rick.
Daamnnn thanks Rick!! If u buy a set of Poundcakes, use promo code JEREMY at checkout an you’ll save some cash 🤘🏻
@@JeremyWhiteShow Thanks I will use the code!!!
Awesome!!!! Just put the Pasadena Black 86 in my 5150 stringing it up now.
Please do a demo when you get it in! I’m interested to see the difference between that and the original Pasadena Black that I have in my 5150.
@@danielvanderlinden2181 I’m about to install a pasadena white on my guitar, i’m going to post a video of that too so we can all hear the differences.
Hey Kurt, how did the 86’s work out for you.
@@Tatted-ne7tu ohhhh it’s great, I had a SD JB in it before. That new Black 86 just nails that VH tone of the late 80’s I highly recommend it
@@KurtS5150 That’s good news man I appreciate it. I purchased a Fender Mod Shop Strat with this pup in it and surprisingly I can’t find any reviews of it. Should be here Wednesday.
Don Felder used one on the reunion tour back in 94. Maybe that's why he got fired? Lol! Great video!
Hahahaha!!!
Great joke!
Sounds great. Truly. So as an EVH tone chaser/junky, I totally get it. I am wondering honestly though how much of a difference are you really noticing if you take the mental part out of it? I have a number of EVH and Marshall type amps. What I have found is that in using any of them (as fun as it is) the gain structure really not only waters down pickup differences, but to an extent, even waters down guitar changes. It is why I quit brining my 5150 to gigs. I wanted to grab a Tele, a Strat, a Rik, or a Gretch, and really hear the nuances of those guitars through the amp. I was feeling and hearing that with even the blue channel on my 5150, a tele really didn't sound much like a tele and so on and so forth. Once I moved to a cleaner, single-channel, amp (Dr Z Wreck Jr or Divided by 13), I was having much more fun switching up guitars and pedals and dialing in a huge range of tones. Along with that, coming full circle to your video, pickups made a tremendous difference.
You've sold me on those Pariah's - I tell you what - i'm gonna get a EBMM Axis EX in trans gold- get to the 5150 decal, his signature decal / the "Made In San Luis Obispo, Califoria, USA" decal and It'll pretty much be a Eddie Van Halen signature guitar! (No one could tell the difference) lol - it's been my dream guitar since I was 12 years old!
Great playing as usual! The pickups sound so wide and articulate. They have that spank juice!
I'm surprised you can't tell the difference, they do sound different to me. The EVH original sounds a bit warmer and more balance, while the Poundcake is more in your face, with lots of presence. Then again, the original is a 30 year old guitar, the guitar and pickups alike might have mellowed some with age. That being said, I owned an Axis a long time ago and it was stolen from my dorm room in college. Still bums me out when I think about it. Regardless, I always remember loving the pickups they had-- just perfect rock pickups-- the whole guitar really was great. Now the Axis costs twice what it did 20 years ago, so getting one isn't as easy as I'd like. I just got a Pariah Black and it's pretty good, so hey, may as well try the Poundcake sometimes soon and hope to capture a bit of that mojo at a much more reasonable price point.
Not everyone has acclimated ears... The poundcakes, at least through this rig have more bite and less warmth... which makes sense, because the DiMarzios used a technique Larry DiMarzio developed for this set and patented, which uses a spacer so that Alnico V magnets can retain their high output but with more of the warmth of Alnico II magnets. DiMarzio went on to label this "Air Bucking" and used it on several other pickups... But the Pariah set does not try to mimic this technique, that alone makes them more clones of the Peavey era Wolfgang set, which according to the man who made the (Jim DeCola) they were identical to the Ernie Ball DiMarzio's except for those spacers.... Is this all nit-picking? I don't think so... If you want to be true to the EBMM EVH sig era the warmth Ed had with that pickup set made them unique, there are plenty of Peavey Wolfgang followers too and I'd say probably more fans of the Peavey Wolfgang tone than the EBMM, so I'm not dissing the Pariah set, I just think it's more honest to claim them as as inspired by the Peavey Wolfgang era, because that's the tone they are nailing to my ears and from what little I know technically about how the pickup designs.
@@rmzzz76 The Dimarzio EBMM EVH pickups do NOT have the Air Bucking.
Actually- I stand corrected, I believe they are.
@@raylinds1 yeah he invented air bucking trying to build a Alnico V pickup warm enough to make EVH happy. “Air bucking” spacers were one of two patents DiMarzio filed to design that set… The Peavey set could not clone the patented features, the result gave the Peavey Wolfgang set more bite.. which a lot of people prefer… the Pirariah set sound like Peavey Wolfgang pickups to my ears.
00:01 ...God, that sounded so Good. I still can't believe Eddie is gone....been diehard fan since 78'.
I envy you, i’m 20, so i never got to see him live and it breaks my heart man.
@@underskillednunderpaid I got to see em 5 times 🤘🏻 will never forget a minute of those nights.
I don't get the 5150 ICONIC hate. It sounds like a 5150 in an affordable package. It's literally a 5150 but cheaper, people just want to hate over nothing. Also, that's an amazing tone you've got going there my guy, killer!
What one is cheaper?
Once you realise most people are morons life becomes much easier
The Axis headstock is slightly wider. Look at the tuning peg distance.
Pretty cool. Best guitar
Axis body is fatter
I thought he said it’s an EX, (Japanese manufacture of all original parts) which should be exactly the same? 🤔
I like the tone of both but I think the signature has a smoother tone...good stuff bud thanks enjoyed it
Great job 👍 FANTASTIC production on your demos. Very professional! I have 40 watt combo EVH iconic and LOVE IT!! I'm thinking of updating speaker to celestion greenback, ? I see your running through the 5150 cabinet.. the speakers sound fantastic!!
Great comparison! could you make a comparison between the Dimarzio EBMM vs a Dimarzio AT-1? Dimarzio web says the AT-1 is the closer to the EBMM, would be great to compare and i can't find anybody doing it. Thanks!
Definitely hear the difference ...
Great playing Jeremy….. as always 👍😉
The detuning and effects are masking the tone! Do a test with a pure clean signal
What year Music Man is that? What is your opinion between that or the Peavey Wolfgang.
Thanks Jeremy, the Pariah Poundcakes are on my list.
Use promo code JEREMY at checkout 🤘🏻
Can hardly tell the difference on video. I'm sure in person there's a slight difference. You should maybe do a comparison video of the EBMM vs EVH Wolfgang USA next?
What is most people's opinion between the 2 guitars? I want to get another guitar.
The Pariah's almost sound more like EVH than the record!😂😂 It is so awesome that we have the aftermarket support nowadays to be able to replicate these tones this easy
I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to say it, I'm glad you did.
Yup! They are great. You gonna get some?
@@JeremyWhiteShow I think I have to! Hahah I just picked up a Wolfgang standard in Transparent amber. They would go great in there
@@JeremyWhiteShow Yes I am going to purchase, and I will use the code! Rick.
In the previous video you mentioned your wet dry wet setup. Were you using just the 5150 head and 4x12 cabinet or was there more ampage and cabinets?
DAMN Jeremy!!!!
Love your guitar/gear videos
Thanks man!!
Also jeremy, amazing playing and the tone is killer
Sounds great. Is that a chorus pedal in the chain?? Thanks
I'm amazed at what these sound like.
They are absolutely fantastic!
Has anybody else read that Larry Dimarzio claimed that the pickups in the EBMM's were really just Dimarzio Tone Zone pups? I've never put that claim to the test. Wondering if anyone has any input in that?
Larry DiMarzio never said that. What he DID say is that it came down to two final pickups, which he and Steve Blucher called A and B. DiMarzio bet Blucher that EVH would choose pickup A, as he thought it sounded better. On the final decision, Eddie and Steve Lukather were testing them w/ Blucher. Ed couldn’t decide, so he let Luke pick. Lukather chose pickup B, saying “that’s the one!” Pickup B went into the EBMM EVH guitars. What happened to pickup A?! It became the Tone Zone!!
🤘😎🤘
ps. The neck pickup is virtually identical to the Air Norton…
@@Metalcop5150 Great info. Thanks mate!
Did you have version 1 in this guitar? I’m thinking I like version 1 of the poundcakes?
I was waiting for this!!
They RAWK!!!
@@JeremyWhiteShow I’m surprised that I prefer the Pariah set. I mean, those are great, but I thought I wouldn’t hear a difference between them and the DiMarzio set
Nice tone
Thanks Jim!
Combination with the Iconic 5150 sounds great.
Sounds awesome bro / well done
What is your bonus code for the pariah page?
What else do you use for this sound...?
Eventide MicroPitch Delay?
Great video...!!!
Yup, H3000 and 3 SDE3000 delay’s… w/d/w 🤘🏻
Sounds great Jeremy👍🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Hey @Jeremy White, what are you using on the effects side? Chorus? Harmonizer?
In case Jeremy doesn't reply, I know he has an Eventide H9, which has the Eventide harmonizing algorithms used by Ed. So my guess is he's probably using the Micropitch algorithm (and maybe a ping pong delay). Google will help you find the Eventide settings to replicate the Carnal Knowledge/Balance albums.
Nice playing
I may grab a neck poundcake..thank for the video. Btw..why does this EX had a route around the floyd?
Awesome! Use promo code JEREMY! As for the route, previous owner had it routed to float the bridge Cantrell style… stupid haha
The Pariah's make it sound about 1/2 step higher, interesting!
“And I’m not going to be doing any CHUGGING.”
Oh thank sweet Christ.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
*thousand yard stare*
😂😂😂
Dude great video, but your EVH swing is a bit off….
The Pariah sound like Peavey Wolfgang pickups.
They sound totally different
Agree.
Nice one. Are you endorsed? 🤔
Use promo code JEREMY and I’ll get back to ya… deal? 🤘🏻😂
Would've been nice to see a A/B without the effects and just hi gain on.
Where’s the fun in that 😂
@@JeremyWhiteShow just to get a better idea of how close the pickups are to the dimarzios without all the fx processing. I own version 1, great pickups!😋
You should've tuned both guitars to the same pitch. The EVH sounds better.
Not in this video it doesn’t!! Lol
THe originals still sound better. The pariahs are a little harsh in some frequencies.
Evh sig sounds better but I'd buy the pickups
More definition in the original EVH sig model pickups. The new ones are too hot sounding…imo.
Despite what he says, I think that these pickups give a great pure clean sound, especially in the middle position.
Obviously a clear distortion sound is what these pickups do best but don’t sleep on the clean sound y’all
Oh totally!! I just said that to trigger clean freaks 😂 they clean up VERY nicely
Consider me triggered!😂😂😂 I’d also like to say that these are incredibly versatile. I’m not even using the 2.0s and they’re sick. Currently I’m playing thru the Neural DSP Petrucci plug-in and these nail his tone as well as other super articulate and clear distortion tones.
@@noahmoore6513 I’m thinking about getting the SLO100 from them. What DAW are you playing thru?
@@JeremyWhiteShow so I’m just playing the standalone software (trying not to violate my college housing agreement) for now. I tried the SLO100 plug-in and I wasn’t super impressed. Before you get it you can do the 14 day trial, but also watch the comparison video that Rabea Massaad did with the real vs the software SLO100.
However, I will 100% recommend the Petrucci one. Piezo amp that I haven’t really messed around with, a pure clean amp that can get really spacey. Great gain in the crunch amp with a bunch of features like a doubler that can split your sound kind of how EVH did, and a transpose function that lets you change the tuning of your guitar.
I’d try both if I were you, you get a 14 day free trial which is what makes neural great.
Prefer the sound of the original. Have you tuned down half a step?
I have to say this...I wonder how they'd sound in a Les Paul.
All I can say is 👌
So good!!
Comparison between Poundcake v1 & v2?
I've heard rumors a few different pickups have gotten a rebuild..so now I'm curious
Just a bit louder and more attack, a touch more clarity and less compression. They are great!
Nice playing
I'm from the 70s so I stopped following them after Roth left.
If you can't here the difference you are deaf. The original is way way better. Original has tone not all that sizzle and buzz.
The Evh Ernie ball sounds better
Too much chorus to hear a difference.
