Feels like me when I am playing/coaching a kids team and trying to get them to play good basketball. I am constantly looking to pass to an open player, the kids start to figure it out and stop guarding me so I just take the easy basket to force them back to playing good D. Somehow Jokic is doing this against one of the playoffs most hard working defensive teams.

People used to thoroughly enjoy great passing & ball movement, Magic & Bird ruled 80s NBA and their games were primarily about making their teammates better. After that, the Jordan era came to fruition during the 90s and everyone's interest suddenly shifted to 1v1 highlight plays, which was followed up by the rise of AND1 & Allen Iverson who "anklebroke" their way into dominating the basketball market. It's really nice that people are appreciating great passing & ball movement again as of late thanks to Steph Curry & the Warriors (even though haters would simply dismiss them as just jacking up threes all day), but then again it's kinda weird when people say the Nuggets are boring in comparison because they also have a great offensive flow to their game.

Beautiful breakdown. I read just the other day the modus operandi for Jokic, which came from one of his basketball coaches when he was a kid. His coach told him, “Assists make 2 people happy, points just make 1 person happy.” This advice, given to Jokic as an impressionable kid, has been his driving philosophy ever since. That is why he humbly eschews awards and statistical accolades and emphasizes the cohesion of his teammates at every opportunity. This is why I admire his play so much: based on his interviews and his playing style it is evident that he prefers the nights where his points:assist ratio favors assists more than points.

Explained so perfectly how the mind-numbing isolation tactics of the NBA make both the fans AND the other players on the court just want to give up and go home. Denver are destroying that model and it's beautiful to watch. I'm sure there are plenty of fans who for some reason or another don't want them to win, but for the vast majority of basketball fans it's so refreshing and makes the game kind of new and exciting again. This whole finals series, including Miami's absurd run from #8, has shown us what the game can be like again.

@@murabula2092 So that is where you and I differ, you see a parallel between Jokic and messi and I see almost complete opposites.
Jokic would rather pass than score whereas messi would rather score than pass.
Jokic appears to be almost devoid of ego whereas messi is very much ego.
If messi’s game was about helping his teammates he would never have amassed the scoring record he has. I do agree though Jokic is far more of an Iniesta, Xabi, Pirlo type of player than a messi type.
On the point of why PSG did not do as well as people expected with that squad was messi was used to having the whole team centre around him, but PSG had far too many egos in the squad and that was counter productive.
And on messi’s longevity, I think it’s because he does little running, tracking back and defending than other players, his game input is centred on the least amount of effort for goals. He is like so many other goal scorers they only know how to run one way.

Im glad Jokic showed this kind of playstyle because my favorite team in OKC plays simular to this kind of style, SGA drives to the rim are lethal along with his deadly mid range attracting the defensive gravity making his teammates open while JDub is a absolute menace as a slashing cutter finding different ways to get his guy slacking to slither to the basket while Giddey is their playmaking wizard, the orchestrator of the offense he controls the game by his passing like hos teammates said he'll you the ball you just gotta be ready then you got Isaiah joe is a sniper as their movement shooter while Poku & Dort can catch and shoot to knocking down corner triples lastly Chet is their wildcard since the dude very dynamic plus can score on all 3 levels.

While the stats are historic, they had one of the easiest paths in years. Only 1 of the teams they beat had any realistic chance of being a champion.

Having Shaq like comparison, at this stage of Jokic's game is really an insult to Jokic.
Shaq never did anything that Jokic does, so I really can't see on which parameters we can compare the two of 'em. Shaq had a more successful career, which still holds true, but Jokic ain't finished. Only thing where Shaq had an upper hand was a better roaster, he was always surrounded by great teammates (to mention some: Penny Hardaway, Kobe, Wade etc) which only diminish his value, in my eyes. Hakeem, on the other hand is someone Jokic could or probably already has modeled some of his game after. Better offensive player than Shaq, better defensive player than Shaq (talking about The Dream) and also had his share of assists. If Jokic manages to win it all, this year, he will be the second center to do it without an all star teammate. Hakeem was the first one to do it, back at '94. So yeah, Shaq isn't even close to Jokic, in my eyes, in the skill department, offensively Jokic is better, defensively- we could argue which had better D, Shaq was a force which meant only crazy dudes were going at him, so yeah, just having him at the paint made a huge diff, whether he was actively involved or not is a different conversation. Jokic does smart D, intercepting, stealing, forcing opponents to their weaker side, when taking shots etc. Not as good at rim protecting as Shaq was, not even close, but better at every other part of defense. Overall, Jokic is a better player than Shaq ever was, but that's just my opinion, as someone who's been watching it since the 80's, and was playing bball for 10years in Serbian league.

      @balazsbalog6784 11 месяцев назад +1

Yes, this is a great statistical season and Jokic will be one of the greatest center of all time, I can agree wirh that. But this is far away from the greatest run ever. Wolves were a weak and easy 8th seed opponent. The 4th seed Suns had some chance but no depth and injuries hurting them and an 7th seed Lakers who were okay but overachieved with that core because that's a fluke conference finals appearance, they were not a good team. Same with the 8th seed Heat. I love the Heat but they don't have a championship team. This is still a great story for them but this is also once if a lifetime chance to go to the NBA finals as an 8th seed with this ,,okay" roster which is truly not that great.
So Denver is a great team, they earned their place and will deserve the Championship but this is very far from the greatest run of all time.

I think a lot of credit should also go to the Nuggets organization. They assembled a perfect system and players to go around Jokic and they were patient and stayed with Coach Malone to allow consistency over the years.
When I watch the Nuggets execute offensively it points out all the flaws of my Cleveland Cavs. We have a ball dominant pg and two bigs that lumber around waiting for their shots. It's an offensive (like many in the current NBA) that resembles more of a three point shooting contest where you no longer have to look at the final score to see who won the game as it just comes down to which team hits more threes. The Nuggets have something special and are a breath of fresh air for a league that needed it as we hopefully move on from Lebron sometime soon.

I'm not saying he's the most athletic player ever, but he's far more athletic than he looks. His size and build makes him LOOK slower than he is. Especially on TV.
Watch when he runs coast to coast, he stays ahead of players that look faster while dribbling the ball. He couldn't do that if he was actually slower. It's just his stride is longer, so he's taking less steps to cover the same distance. Some of his post moves, like his spins, are actually quite quick. There's a reason he gets past 'more athletic' players consistently with it.

And then what happened, Jokic was the one doing all of that to AD. Jokic’s strength and endurance are elite and so underrated. How many games did we see Embiid look gassed by the 4th quarter. Jokic never appears that way in games where he is pushing the pace up the floor for 40+ minutes.

@@bilbobaggins33 i agree.. though I will give a small correction that Jokic ALWAYS looks gassed, lool. Not that he actually is, but literally the moment the game starts he looks tired. I almost wonder if that's a psychological advantage, causing his opponents to constantly underestimate him.

okay jokic is amazing but that's just cap, he plays fast for his relative agility, especially in the post, most time's he's just running the play not "playing slow"

Jokic has more endurance than most, he's not flashy and fast sure, but he's so big that he appears slow on camera. Seeing this guy run in person and the way he moves you most definitely wouldn't call him slow

The comparison with Shaq's 2000 run is mind-boggling. You've obviously done a lot of Finals content lately Jxmy, but I'd love to see a video breaking down Jokic's entire season and how it stacks up with the greatest ones ever. I'm sure it's incredibly high on the list and would be even higher if a certain center from Philadelphia didn't beg people to giving him a particular award... which we all know Jokic deserved.

Nah, for every 75 possessions Shaq averages around 28.5 points and 14 rebounds with a 56%TS
Jokic for every 75 possessions he averages 29 points 10 assists and 13 rebounds on 62% true shooting
Even with the amount of possessions adjusted Jokic is better offensively, the only problem is his defence which may keep Shaq above Jokic for now.
The only thing that comes close offensively is 91 Jordan or 2009 Lebron

@@Apwolsopcjrhei sooooo Shaq played more minutes a game and kept that same level? Yea I'll consider that more dominant. 40 minutes of Shaq or 33 minutes or Nikola? I'll take 7 more minutes than with my main guy. And again. In the actual games played he produced a higher percentage of his teammates points and rebounds than Nikola. Again not to disrespect nikola.this is an all time finals performance but Shaq was more dominant. We don't play basketball by 75 possessions or 36 minutes. We play 48 minute full games.and Shaq was more dominant

Jokic still scores more per 100possesion by 1 point I think around 38 points for Jokic and 37 points for Shaq. Jokic also has like 6 more assists and is more efficient. I think they’re both as even as you can get cause Jokic has defence problems, but I still think Jokic’s offence is still a shit ton better.

Joker being the goat wont happen, him being a top 3 big man with shaq, kareem, its somewhat possible but still a little strech

I really dont know about that one. For him to be considered the Goat or even get into that conversation you gotta win atleast 3 or 4 rings at the absolute minimum. We always think the team thats currently winning is just going to get better year after year. But I mean look at the last champions. Role players are leaving for a bigger paycheck, injuries happen and sometimes the star himself just doesnt have a good series in the next playoffs.
