Jimmy could have mentioned that, ever since NBA changed to 82 games per season in 1967/68, only 4 players who won the MVP award didn’t play 65 games.
And among these 4 players, 3 of them had a lockout season, which were 98/99 Karl Malone, 11/12 Lebron James and 19/20 Giannis A-Z.
So the only MVP award winner who didn’t reach 80% attendance rate was the only infamously injury prone 77/78 Bill Walton. Even Embiid himself played 66 games last season to win the MVP award.

Some of the best advice I got from a mentor was "be careful what you measure". People will change whatever they have to to achieve the metric that gets them paid.
If you make an injury exception for the 65 game rule, people will start claiming everything as injuries. If you change nothing, people will reduce risk to avoid injury.
It'll be tough either way, but I think the change was for the best.

You could always do a major injury exception so X- games in a row forced off (let’s say 10) and thus not include minor injuries and then it goes off the new 80%. Since this does to a degree encourage them to recover for longer periods of time when injured to a degree.

The 65 game rule 100% needs to stay in place. You summed it up perfectly. If the players want an exception to the rule, it should only be related to money, i.e. if someone has an injury that means they don’t qualify for all NBA because of games, but they were clearly all NBA and get a contract bonus then maybe the league or the players can vote if they deserve the bonus based on there play in the games they did play.

    • @berryesseen

The teams can be given an option to ignore the 65-game rule for 1 or 2 players if the player is an All-NBA caliber stats until the time of his injury. So, Embiid can be paid as if he is in All NBA but in reality, he still won't be. As long as the money issue is solved, I think nobody will complain about the rule. It's good for everybody.
Another viewpoint is the fact that this rule is rewarding players who are not "the best" but are mostly available. So these players get in All NBA instead of the injured ones. So, it is again a good thing for players who actually play.

Unless you are talking mainly on just technicals then you may have a case. But don’t say refs have bigger egos than the players cause players complain about every and I mean every single play. The other thing about Embid, which the video unfortunately leaves out, is that he was getting dragged pretty heavily for missing a couple games right before this. People thought he was just being lazy, but he was clearly hobbled later on in the game, and that injury was less “fluke horror” and more “hurt player aggravates lingering injury into a major one”.
That’s the downside to this rule: It pushes players with lingering injuries to play hurt, risking greater injuries in order to hit that 65 game mark. It might still be for the best, but it is a worry to keep in mind.

It sure feels like that especially for any top 4 teams when there are so many teams make the playoffs. Just get to the playoffs without injury. Regular season is a penalty/tax to top teams. Like embid being out. That is why regulating mins especially at the end of the season will be higher. Like so see the analysis last 4 months of this season and see of it still holds of players that playing more compare to last.
I think if they make a big prize for winning the league or relegation for bottom of the league like the the premier league in soccer you might make regular season way more interesting.

I love the rule, just from an availability-for-the-fans perspective. I think with sports in general but especially the NBA, people tend to think of the fans in the stadium as the local regulars. With the NBA specifically, the attention is always on the big money fans and the courtside seats. What gets forgotten, though, is that so much of sports fandom is driven by average middle class fans who maybe only can go to a game a year. You have a lot of sports fans who probably almost never take traditional vacations or anything due to their budget, but that one time a year they make the 2-3 hour drive to get to the city in their state where their favorite team plays. For those fans to get to the game only to find out their favorite players are sitting on the bench and the team isn't even trying that night, that should be considered inexcusable to the league.

Which is exactly what Embiid was doing. Did it to some extent last year too. Look at his record on playing road games against good teams. If not for opening this season on the road in Milwaukee (pretty hard to miss the first game of the season if you're not hurt) and playing on the road against OKC (who have a center who is about 100lbs lighter than Embiid), his lack of playing against tough competition on the road is pathetic. This is suspiciously never brought up that much in the regular sports media. Also not brought up is the fact there were multiple occasions this season where Embiid tweaked his knee or ankle in games and went back in to keep his 30 and 10 streak alive. He also did this in several blowout games. So these same people wringing their hands about this rule and how it allegedly "forces" players to play hurt apparently have no issue with a guy playing hurt when he wants to pad his own, individual stats.

I like the 65 game rule. Embiid was the clear leader in the race but it is not like SGA or Jokic were that far behind. As said by Jimmy when it comes to most VALUABLE player, I would rather have either of them over Embiid strictly knowing there is a higher percent change they are available. They are 98% as good as a player but 30% more available. Plus it get rid of super stars sitting games out, I would be pretty pissed if I when through all the trouble of attending an NBA game in my busy life only for the premier super star to sit out.

Load management has become a terrible issue. I live in France and I’ve been several times to NBA games…lucky enough to see the top players play. I would have been so disappointed to see them sitting on the bench. Like Jordan or Kobe used to say, every star should be playing for the fans in the arena who never saw them play. Also, who goes to the office 80% of the time because they want/need to rest…except for vacation…but NBA has a vacation in summer…
No doubt this minimum is a good rule but also players shouldn’t be paid when not playing whatever the reason and insurances should cover games missed for injuries.
Finally, players might be around 90% game played this season…but it would be interesting to review this at the end of the season as they might be keeping some buffer right now in case of injuries.
Last but not least, thank you Jimmy for another great great video !!! 👍

It’s a hard and complicated conversation to have because injuries suck and often times there’s nothing players can do to avoid injuries but regardless as harsh as it may be, injuries take you off the court. Avoidable or not you are NOT valuable to your team if you can’t play.
I can understand the frustration for the players to rush them back from injuries they could further hurt them as seen with the Halliburton injury we saw this season but regardless I don’t think it’s to much to ask of these players if they want to be in consideration for awards in the best league the sport has to offer.
The MVP award is the most valuable player to their team not the most valuable player to their team when they play. As you said in the video which I totally agree with, is a player truly the most valuable if they’re unable to play?

    • @lovaboy57

Me and Joel Embiid grew up in Africa together back in the late 90's. We used to go zebra-back riding in the countryside of the Serengeti all the way to the foothills of Mt. Kilamanjaro before moving to the city for a more glamorous life. Long story short, I convinced him to move to Kansas to pursue a career in sports. I told him he'd never be MVP one day, he's mad at me because he thinks I lied to him because he still never won MVP. Needless to say he keeps crying like a baby reminiscent of Kawhi Leonards dagger through his heart. I ended the conversation by saying Wilt Chamberlain, Paul Pierce, Jaque Vaughn and Danny Manning will forever be better than him. He proceeded to cry even more. Moral of the story. Joel will never win MVP. Also, he can't shoot. That is all.

considering that this is for awards and not salary, i think it is fair. awards are a bonus, an ego booster and part of being the best or MVP depends on off court mangement of recovery and training. i also think that only having to perform at 80 percent of the games is lenient, you couldn't say that about any other job and once again this is to get an ego boosting award not salary. could you imagine going to work 80 percent of the time and then complaining you didn't get employee of the month, you'd be fire before the month was up.

The 65-game rule is a good thing, from a players standpoint it's a fair baseline to be considered for awards. And if you consider how much they get paid, they should be able to meet that minimum, especially if players from previous generations were able to complete full seasons.

  • @jessicawadleigh1246

I like the rule for all the reasons you laid out. Injuries suck, but the player who shows up is always more valuable than the player who doesn’t, regardless of the sport. I do think we can make some tweaks to it. One I’d like to see is for 65 games stay as the minimum for what I see as the big awards: MVP, All-NBA 1st Team, DPOY, MIP. But we could loosen up the other All-NBA teams: maybe a 55 game threshold for 2nd Team and a 45 game threshold for 3rd. Since there are salary implications, bonuses that players get for hitting these, maybe it could be combined with a bonus cap at the league level for these targets ($1m max bonus 3rd team, $5m max bonus 2nd team, no max bonus 1st team) to continue to push players to hit game minimums (admittedly don’t know if bonus caps already exists or not).
