      This is why many of us are pissed about the plumbers and firemen narratives because of the games evolution (some would suggest the opposite) and that todays players didn’t just magically wake up with the skill sets that they have. The past had too many exciting and athletic stars of their own to simply cast them off into the building clutter of dust of nba history

    the fact that Bird was similar to both peak Jokic and senior LeBron is insane man
    edit: come back here just after realizing that both Jokic and LBJ don't have Bird's midrange and threes accuracy. what a scary player he was.

    • @josephmother2659
      @josephmother2659 5 месяцев назад +39

      Bird gets overshadowed by Magic because of the 5 championships and Showtime stuff but he was as good (and better at times) at scoring as LeBron and Jordan without needing to match their strength speed and injury avoidance. He was legitimately intimidating and probably gets clowned on by kids for saying 22 year old MJ looked like God, but that was the highest praise possible from the best player in the league and it was deserved. Had Larry stayed healthy, he would be even closer to LeBron in the completely arbitrary GOAT SF debate even after all he’s done, and if he played today, I think he’s smart and talented enough to look like 1992 Jordan playing against high schoolers.

      He became great with an unorthodox play style. Because he didn't have the muscle like other PFs to back down whoever he wanted. He used his precise shooting touch combined with his height to shoot over defenders that can barely come close to blocking his shots. Dirk's prime was in an era where Bigs primarily clog the paint and post up. There were very few Bigs that willingly shot from deep.

      I’ve thought Bird and Jokic were similar for a long time. But the difference I see is that in today’s NBA Bird would shoot a lot more threes, score a more points and get to the line more often than he did in his day. Bird in todays NBA would be unstoppable - as Jokic is now but they’d be quite different.

    I think those comparisons are statistically accurate, but not always stylistically accurate. However, given that they're being made purely based on statistics, it's pretty interesting to see similar results coming from different styles. Luka and McGrady aren't particularly similar players, but they end up with similar results. Durant and Dirk didn't play that similarly, but have broadly similar stats.
    Maybe my favorite comparison in this video was Ja and Steve Francis. As soon as Jimmy said it, it made perfect sense. Francis was even more playground than Ja, but they're both hyperathletic point guards who played differently than the rest of the league. Francis did a lot of stop-and-go moves and took a ton of midrange jumpers while also dunking on big guys _(and still getting a good number of assists),_ and Ja does a lot of the same stuff. I'd say Ja is quicker whereas Francis was craftier, but they're very similar stylistically, especially given the style of basketball played at the time _(Francis took almost no 3's, Ja rarely takes 18 foot pull-ups, etc.)._

    Great video and awesome website. It seems that the biggest issue is not prioritizing certain stats. Giannis is a great player, but he cannot shoot. His game is simply different from what I remember of Garnett, who was more versatile. The stats don't always reflect play style, or exactly where their shots come from on the field (e.g., location, feet from basket, frequency, etc.). They also don't capture personality, which is important when we conceptualize a player.

    goes to show how big of a difference from metrics vs eye test, In Ja's case by the stats he's close to Steve Francis or threepeat kobe, while with the eye test he's like 2010 D Rose or 2016 RWB

    Jimmy, you honestly became my favorite content creator after watching this video. You are finally the first person I’ve seen to really put actual respect on his name. Everyone else bandwagoned you made a couple videos during his come up talking about him in a genuine way. Everyone still is even trying to debate who the best player in the league for the last 5-6 years but we’ve known . Now you didn’t respect him at very first and that’s because of Giannis, which is understandable. But as a nuggets fan and a basketball fan I saw from the 2017 season he was doing thing with a basketball big man just can’t do he was making a 13th ranked team in the west at best a play off contender. And finally you’ve given him his flowers in depth with genuine tone and heart. Not just a slight nod just cuz he’s got a ring. You were the one to talk about his PER stats and showed just how special he was

    Even though this is purely statistical, it goes to show how underrated many of the past players are. Like, I don't think anyone would've thought that KD would be compared to a 1989 Tom Chambers, or current-day LeBron to a 1996 Toni Kukoc
