Like between that 4 (Embiid 70, Luka 73, KAT and Booker 62) Luka one was the most efficient and most need, like Mavs only W by 5pt, Luka needs to drop that 73pt in order for Mavs to W, not putting number in garbage time...

Jokic is dominating every single Advanced Stat, and has his team hovering between 1-3rd in the West. I won't say it's narrative driven, just that narrative is also a factor alongside stats, skill and team-standing. What I mean is just like those other factors they're all weighed and can way more or less in any given season.
Think of the Russel Westbrook MVP, yes he had the insane triple double average but he still wasn't able to carry his team to good standing. When you add onto the fact that he had something to prove with the departure of KD and how he had to stand as the sole driving force of that OKC team then that's an MVP worthy narrative.
Basically I don't think narratives are a bad thing to include in the MVP race as it made the Westbrook MVP heartfelt and legendary in a way. It's not narrative driven, just that it's also a factor to be weighed

not complete picture in this video - giannis, luca, shai, even sabonis are all leading luca in total win shares and even offensive win shares. they also hold an edge in overall efficiency, and while luca leads on bpm and vorp, those two categories are extremely close. Factoring these, makes total sense why luca is behind them - it is more difficult to contribute to a team that has overall better players. Considering luca trails in some categories and barely has an edge in others while playing on a worse team, this means other players overall have a bigger impact on their respective team. MVP should not be based on individual numbers, but should be impact on team. The old mvps you compared who had high individual numbers also had better team stats than luca currently.

Everything that the hate-filled clowns said and the more stupid of them continue to say against Luka is turning back and falling on their own heads and biting them from behind:
      He plays only to score.
      He is a stat padder.
      He is a ball hog.
      He has zero defense.
      He is slow.
He doesn’t make his team better.
He doesn’t make his teammates better.
His team is losing because of him.
He has zero team success (actually he came in NBA as 19-year continental champion prodigy on national and club level from Europe, which produces the best players in the world nowadays),
      etc., etc.
When his team loses Luka is the guilty one because of the above mentioned “reasons”.
When his team wins and Luka has obviously the main contribution Luka suddenly doesn’t exist for the army of his haters - it’s the team chemistry and everybody else’s great play but not Luka.
It’s laughable and at the same time it sadly reveals the dark side of the human soul - envy, hatred, and additionally corruption for the media agenda sellers.

It would be cool for you to do a series about underrated players in the league. From all eras. Go through and talk about how they’re actually pretty good, underrated, etc, and go through their stats and stuff.
Like your “Make the Case” series, but for usually lesser known & underrated players. Like you’re making their case for why they’re underrated & might need to be appreciated more.
First player I’d recommend is technically a relative of mine, and my grandpa helped him with basketball. He didn’t even like it at first, but it’s Brian Grant. The General.
He has a few games where he almost had a 5 for 5, and does have 1 game which he has a 5 for 5. And he played during one of the most aggressive eras of the game, especially with the PFs & Cs, yet he averaged 7-10 rebounds a game, and would always give Karl Malone a run for his money.
(His averages for his whole career of 12 seasons is semi low, but this is mainly due to him getting Parkinson’s Disease & injuries his last couple of years, which obviously brought down his stats a bit).
And you can do lesser known ppl like this or even lesser known, but even better known players that still might be underrated, and you “Make the Case” for why they’re underrated.

    Narrative is also very important.
In 2017. when Westbrook won the MVP, not only did he average 30point triple-double, but because KD left him in summer of 2016. everyone felt bad for Russ, yet he carried OKC to 6th seed in tough western conference.
When Jokic won the MVP in 2022. as a 6th seed, his 2nd (Jamal) and 3rd (MPJ) best players were injured for a WHOLE season, and yet Nikola lead his Monstars made out of Monte Morris, Will Barton, 35 y/o Jeff Green and Aaron Gordon (Austin Rivers, Facundo Campazzo, JaMychal Green, Bones Hyland, Davon Reed, Zeke Naji and Bryn Forbes bench) to 48 wins and a 6th seed. That same season top seeds in the east were Heat with 53 wins and Celtics, Bucks and 76ers with 51 wins each, while in the west Suns had 64 wins with Booker and CP3 and Grizzlies had 56 wins (Mavs were 4th seed with 52 wins). Out of all of those teams, the only players seen as a threat for MVP were Embiid and Giannis and their teams only had 3 wins more than injury riddled Nuggets.
So the narrative was if Nikola had his boys to play alongside with, Denver would've been top 2 seed (which they proved in the following 2022/23 season).

Yet the same mistakes are being made. In your example, you've just shown that you can be the best player in the world but if you don't have a good team around you then, like Jokic, you finish 6th.
Now, in Luka's case, he hasn't had a good team around him in the way that these other stars have had. Only since post all star, would I say the Mavs look significantly better. There's lots of work still to be done defensively, but they finally have certain pieces that you could say they can make a deep playoff run or finish with a high seed next season.
Luka has had to deal with vital parts of the team being injured including Kyrie, Lively and Dante Exum. The team is 3-6 when Luka doesn't play which is worst record than any other MVP candidate.
The Mavs simply do not have a better team than alot of the teams in the NBA. It is the reason why the Mavs were expected to finish in the play in tournament before the start of the season. Luka can still be the best player in the world but not be able to get his team to 4th place. You've already proven that with Jokic.

There is a hard limit to how good a team can be with the Luka/Prime Harden style of offense. Most good coaches and front offices understand that and won't coddle their best player to have such a usage and on ball dominance. Luka is spoiled in the sense his front office cares more about maximizing Luka's stats than maximizing their playoff chances.

There’s no simple answer, but what I do know is that Jokic had a starting backcourt of Monte Morris and Austin Rivers in his second MVP season. The player with the second most minutes/game was Will Barton. Facundo Campazzo, Jamychal Green, Boogie, and Bryn Forbes were major rotation pieces. 6/7 of those guys don’t even play in the league anymore. They were not a play in team. Win totals are similar, but sometimes that’s just the way it is. If the Nuggets had been in the play in Jokic would not have won. That was the narrative that season.

    • @sganet_
      @sganet_ Месяц назад +47

It’s not narrative, Jokic leads almost all advanced metrics for a MVP 4th year in a row, he was even crazier last year. 2 years before his first MVP, Giannis was league leader back to back and won MVP back to back, the year before that Harden was league leader. So until Luka leads in this like winshare48, BPM, TS, VORP..etc, you can’t even make a case that he’s #2. He’s #3-4 right now, and we aren’t even talking about his team’s rank, winshare is an isolated stat.

Good video but the thing about some of those on/off court points plus minus is that the way the teams are structured makes a big difference. The Celtics are loaded, if Tatum is out, others know they have to play different and do more -- and because they are so good, they CAN. Dallas, outside of Kyrie, has no one who can do more....it's more or less a bunch of role players. For the games missed, the stat is not even significant with only samples of 5 and 8 games, which all may have their own underlying reasons for being what they are.

The Mavs are poised to be more successful going forward. The moves they made this year has really created the most complete and deep roster Luka has. There are still some areas of weakness, but with Gafford and Lively, you have two mobile bigs who are dominant in the pick and roll with both Luka and Kyrie. If one is out, you don't really miss much with the other. When Kyrie is healthy, it takes a lot of pressure off Luka. They are both ball dominant players, but it works with the way this roster is constructed. I also think PJ was a great pick up. We have yet to see his ceiling in the league, he has a lot of wrinkles to his game. He can stretch the floor, finish strong down low, has a post and defensive presence. PJ can be a beast and I believe he is the x factor for this team. He could be the 3rd part of a big 3 with Luka and Kyrie. Exum has been a nice pickup when healthy. Comparing this roster to the past where Dwight Powell was your STARTING CENTER is daylight and dark. I respect Powell's story. He was an afterthought in the Rondo trade and made something of himself in Dallas. However, he is at best a backup PF (or preferably 3rd string lol). Having guys like him and Kleber starting and playing significant minutes just shows you how weak these teams have been. Those guys are good as role players off the bench. That, the failed Tingus Pingus experiment, the Seth Curry carousel, what this team needs is consistency. I like this current roster. If they could unload "Mr. Inconsistency" Tim Hardaway Jr. for a more efficient, consistent, 3 and D guy with some other wrinkles to his game, then I think this roster is set. Will have to wait until next season for that though. In the meantime, try and keep this core around.

Your videos are very impressive. I wish someone would recognize the effort you put into this research and award you for it. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
To answer your question though, we miss a very important component in the title of the award: MOST. In order to be the most of anything, you have to compare it to something. Most valuable player is comparing a players value to ALL other players. Then there is the issue of the value of the player: are we talking to the team, or to the league?
Then it becomes easier to determine who’s the most valuable: comparing a players impact to their team or the league at large, versus another player should determine who wins. I don’t think an individual stat can measure a players impact on the league. How many people watch the NBA simply because he’s playing, outside of Dallas?
The only athlete that has ever, single-handedly contributed to the overall value of a sport was Tiger Woods. For years, people only watched tournaments that he played in. He was the MVP of golf, but that’s an individual sport. This isn’t, which is why his success is based on team results.
IMO, since no single player can stop the success of the league, the MVP is the one that gets his team to the finish line - the Finals - and carries them across it with a win.

I remembered I had countless discussions about that before Lebron's MVP in cleveland.
Arguably, you are even more valuable if your team needs you.
I liked how you showed the statistics about the missing games, how different they perform with or without the player. (of course, this couldn't be the most valuable stats, because players might want to skip difficult games to make the stats look better).
Or maybe winshares, or maybe other metrics that really shows not only how good you are, but how valuable you are for your team.

Luka is the best offensive player of the 3 guys going for it but he's unquestionably the worst defender of the 3, his team isn't doing nearly as well as the other two, despite similar talent levels around him, he's the least efficient of the 3 and he's missed the most games of the 3.
The reality is that SGA and Giannis both have at least as good a case as Luka and based on how most people judge it, better cases. I love Luka and he's having an incredible season but so are SGA and GIannis and Jokic is having one of the greatest seasons ever put together. Being 4th in this race isn't some bias or hatred of Luka, it's an admission of how the season has gone. Anyone arguing he's below 4th is displaying the bias though and should check themself similar to anyone who doesn't have Jokic first.

Comparing numbers to prior seasons is ridiculously short sided argument. Offense is extremely inflated right now, Mavs with kyrie and no luka have an offensive rating of 122. Want to guess what it is with Luka 122....his numbers are great but only tell one side of the story. He still has lots to improve before he can become a true contender.

    Great video.
Ever since Embiid got hurt, I've been saying Luka should win MVP this year and I haven't changed my mind. Theres only like 7-8 games left in the season for each team, so I don't think I will change my mind, even if the Mavs finish 8th.

The problem u and jimmy have is you cant get 2 major factors - (1) numbers are super inflated right now with the pace of play and volume of shots (esp 3s) players like luka take - I'm sorry but averaging a triple double does not mean 💩 anymore - voters aren't being tricked by flashy numbers bc (2) nobody plays defense ESPECIALLY NOT LUKA - all those guys above Luka are good to great defenders while Luka Adds ZERO value on the defensive end of the floor

@@GunnShotVisuals this statement "Luka is a worse defender than Steph" has been debunked as well dude, you listen to Stephen A about luka's defense and it's obvious that you only follow the narritives of the media, you are a bot programmed for this, and I can't hate you for that. But I can educate you, Luka has a defensive rating of 113, and one of the best Defenders at the guard/forward position Jaylen Brown has a Defensive rating of 112.5, or take GIANNIS A for example, his is 112. This myth that Luka can't play defense is so ignorant, and shouldn't be brought up unless he goes back to how he used to play a couple years ago. Don't hate on a player until you've analyzed his game dude, and please don't run into the comment section without fully grasping the situation at hand. I feel like if you have a good basketball IQ offensivley that can translate to defensive IQ as well.

I think it all comes down to PR.
If the league picks you as a star they will push your name as much as possible. If they see you as having a niche market appeal, they will throttle your exposure. That simple.
