Though, this movie takes many artistic liberties, such as with the Spartan armor, the human-like creatures/monsters, etc., The movie still does a great job at capturing the essence of the true historical account. And the fact that the Spartans had better shields (bronze shields) as compared to the wicker shields of the Persians, gave the Spartans a better advantage as well.
Spartan warriors were known for their exceptional military training, discipline, and individual combat skills, which set them apart from many other ancient armies, including the Persian army. The Persian military's strength came from their adaptability, organization, diverse tactics, large numbers, resources, and the fear they instilled in their opponents. In some cases, this fear led to the submission of nations without direct confrontation, rather than the individual fighting skills of their soldiers. The Spartans (and the rest of Greece) ultimately won in the end due to their strategy, alliances, and the combined efforts of the Greek city-states in overcoming the numerically superior Persian army.
The Spartans were renowned for their rigorous military training and discipline. From a young age, Spartan males underwent the agoge, a state-sponsored training program that focused on physical fitness, combat skills, and mental toughness. Spartan soldiers were professional warriors, and their entire society revolved around military preparedness. As a result, they were considered one of the most formidable fighting forces in ancient Greece.
The Persian army, on the other hand, was a diverse force composed of soldiers from various regions of the vast Persian Empire. Their training and equipment varied depending on their specific role within the army and their place of origin.
While the elite Persian soldiers, such as the Immortals, received extensive training and were well-equipped, the overall level of training among Persian troops might not have been as uniformly high as that of the Spartans.

@@Rapben101 "All Quiet On The Western Front" was boring, in my opinion. I know a lot of people liked it and many also did not like it. I personally didn't care much, mainly because the character development just wasn't strong enough to create the needed connections to the characters who died in the movie. In order for a war movie to really be effective, the viewer needs to really connect and feel the emotions that the characters invoke, etc. Take "Schindler's List" for example. It hits harder in the feels when you're invested into the character's development and their built connection with you as the viewer. "All Quiet On The Western Front" didn't have any of that. It was bland and only utilized the visual aspect of the war to attract the audience.

Making Leonidas even more of a badass. He was 55 years old at the battle of Thermopylae and he fought just as hard as the men half his age from sunrise to sunset each day. The line "Then we shall fight in the shade" was actually spoken by one of the Spartans. But it actually went like this "This is pleasant news that the stranger from Trachis brings us; for if the Persians hide the sun, we shall have our battle in the shade." The line "Persian, come and get them" was also actually spoken by Leonidas, with a slight change he actually said "Come and take them!" The line "Come back with your shield or on it" was another historically accurate line, it was originally said by a Spartan mother to her son as he went into battle for the first time.

Gerard Butler (Leonidas), “I had done quite a few takes and most of them were ‘This is Sparta,'” said in a low, monotone growl. “And it’s part process and part insecurity, maybe. And I go, ‘Can I just try another?'”
The next take would be the (often-imitated) scream from director Zack Snyder’s film.
“And I turn around and all my army are literally like this,” he said with a hand over his mouth hiding laughter. “And I go up to Zack and I go, ‘That was too much?’ And while laughing he goes, ‘Yeah! But it was awesome!'”

The "May you live forever" line is so much colder than you realize. Remember earlier in the movie, when Michael Fassbender and the other Greek were looking down on the Persian encampment and he says that Spartans dream of a good death. A good death, to a Spartan was to die gloriously on the battlefield, surrounded by your enemies. So when Leonidas told the hunchback that he hopes he lives forever, he was literally calling him a coward who was unworthy of being a Spartan and doesn't deserve honor, glory or renown.
Also, the story of Leonidas and the "Battle of Thermopylae" is a classic. Given that it really occurred makes it all the greater.

You should have included the scene at the end with the army ready to go into battle. That moment you realize the soldier who was injured and sent away to tell their tale is the narrator always gets me hyped. He's telling the story to an army of 30,000 Greeks, led by 10,000 Spartans. The fact that the story doesn't seem "real" makes more sense and is one more opportunity to get excited knowing the Spartans are going to go crazy.

The quotes in this film are so good because alot of them are actual historical written responses from spartans. Their style of speech short, succint and with a big punch was so renown it had a name, after their region Laconia: Laconic speech. Aka the first recorded instance of action movie star one liners.

    • @joeybossolo7
      @joeybossolo7 Год назад +31

Yup. A prominent example involves Philip II of Macedon. After invading southern Greece and receiving the submission of other key city-states, he turned his attention to Sparta and asked menacingly whether he should come as friend or foe. The reply was "Neither."
Losing patience, he sent the message:
“If I invade Laconia, I shall turn you out.”
The Spartan ephors again replied with a single word: “If”.

The story of the 300 Spartans against the might of the Persian armies is one that has inspired bravery in militaries for centuries, and we have seen it throughout history time and time again, where a small number of soldiers stand against impossible odds and defy the enemy anyway.
EDIT: The Spartans were also famous for what was called laconic phrases or laconic humor. They would speak with as few words as possible to taunt their enemies in battle. So they actually did say stuff like "Then we shall fight in the shade."

If you’ll indulge a history guy: some bits of the movie actually happened. When the Spartans were told the Persian arrows would blot out the sun & the Spartans say they will fight in the shade was true. Another real event was the Spartans throwing the Persian emissaries down a well.
I haven’t seen the sequel so I’m not sure if this is addressed or not, but less than a century after the battle depicted in the movie, the Spartans went to war with the Athenians. And they allied with the Persians against the Athenians.
    Great reaction as always.
