I’m Puerto Rican so not the same area, but the Tainos were the native people in Puerto Rico at the time they were taken over by the Spanish. I started to think those were pilgrims so it would just be a friendly "thanksgiving" type of deal, but realized if they were Mayans, those were Spaniards and there was no "thanksgiving" moments with them. Just conquering and hunting for gold.
Man, this brings me back. I remember first seeing this when I was 3 and I was so scared of the jumpscare in the beginning. My favorite moment was the head rolling from the stairs.
I watched this when I was in elementary school 😂 and I love this film and I understood what message it was saying unlike this girl in the video who doesn't know anything lol
The animal at the beginning is a tapir, though for some reason they dubbed it over with the sound of a regular pig squealing as tapirs don't sound like that. Also gibson mixed Mayan and Aztecs together into some wierd hybrid culture for the movie. Last point - the people doing the sacrifices absloutely knew the eclipse was coming and the whole thing was a stunt to impress the common people. Its a reference to the Mayans being skilled at astronomy.
48:24 The Aztec (the movie decided to use the older advanced Mayan instead) had many enemies who eagerly made up most of the Conquistadors conquering armies. They sacked Tenochtitlan, the Aztec imperial city, with the Spaniards.
“He who brings the Jaguar” is a reference to Cortez, the conquistador who annihilated the Aztecs. The Aztecs initially believed he was Quetzacotl come to life, their Jaguar God come down to Earth to end the world. Hence why Emperor Montezuma acted so emo when the Spanish first arrived. This movie blends elements of the Aztecs and Maya to create a composite history.
C. Columbus was going to be over taken by his crew, due to lack of supplies and no land in site, C.C. study the stars and knew to scare the crew with the eclipse, and warned them. which he did use to his advantage. to take back his ship. and made it to the new world. it was something I remember in history class long before this movie was ever made.
The Europeans coming to their land was such a good twist at the end. It made everything that just happened seem like nothing because you know the ways they were treated by the Europeans. Such an underrated film. And I almost wanna say the first half with the sacrifices and all the other spectacles was the best part before the real action even starts haha 10/10 film from a casual viewer's perspective

LOL you 2 are adorbz I mean I'm less than 5 mins in and I'm typing LOL, it's not an anteater they're chasing in the beginning to eat, it's called a tapir. It's a wild pig. And yeah, Hannah, I like to think the family was safe once they got deeper into the forest at the end. Many Indians went deep inland when the Europeans arrived and the invaders didn't have the immune system to fight off jungle disease nor know how to deal with anything 'jungle' (like foot rot, predators, giant insects and poisonous flora). So many peoples survived for a long while after European settlement. Those who greeted or embraced the Europeans often perished.

One of the BEST Movies ever made. That final scene, totally flips the table...The Mayans were top dog for a long time, until a bigger badder dog came along....
Hannah absolutely nailed it on the head; the sacrifices were purely spectacle to manipulate the masses. The Mayans were so advanced that they could actually predict with great accuracy when solar eclipses were to occur so they made sure their sacrificial ceremony coincided with such an event.
@@plmng7294 no, it’s the Mayans, although it does offer a distorted view of their civilization seeing as how the age depicted in the movie ended about 600 years prior to the movie’s setting. I
It's neither, the architecture and culture resembles the Mayans, but the Mayans were long gone before Cortez landed on the beaches of America. The Azteca were the ones who met the Conquistadors. But this is an amalgamation of the two for story purposes.
@@gumy3939 dude, look up the production of this movie. Gibson and the other writer debated on between featuring the Aztecs or Mayans and later settled on the Maya because of their high sophistication and eventual downfall. They then spent time researching Mayan culture and then brought in an expert on the Maya language to serve as an on-set advisor. They also brought in archaeologists and professors who were experts on the Maya and spent time at Maya ruins so they could accurately depict their architecture. Even Jaguar Paw’s wife’s tattoo is Mayan; it’s a horizontal band with two dots above which was the symbol for the number “7”.
The Maya experienced several periods and the civilization persisted for quite a long time after their technological peak, before the full-blown collapse. Those who have studied the Mayans note that construction and upkeep was more sophisticated the *older* it appeared, rather than newer. It is likely that by the end, leaders of the sort being portrayed barely understood what the more advanced ancient Mayans left them, beyond that the calendars predicted celestial movements.
I‘m Venezuelan, the ants being used to close the wounds are real. The jungles of south america have different size of ants and some are HUGE. The animal they killed in the beginning was a tapir not a ant eater :) I love how the enemies aknowledge that the prophecies of the little girl are coming true and that the gods are turning against them, slowly filling them up with fear. „He who darkens the sun“ (eclipse happening as he was about to be sacrificed), „he who brings the jaguar“. Well he literally brought the jaguar. Jaguars were sacred animals for them and you can hear one of them in fear, trying to apologize to their deity for killing one of it‘s son‘s (jaguar). This is a really cool movie and the soundtrack is amazing!
also there was an episode of duel survival where idk if it was cody or joe but they did the exact same thing and it was really cool! it had to be bug leaf cutters tho so they can do the death lock when u rip the body away

giant ants are used as "stitches" for wounds, due to how big they are, their mandibles ("jaws") are able to clench/pinch together tight enough to hold the sides of the skin of a wound together, and the mandibles remain in a "lock jaw", after you pinch/rip off its body from its head, leaving those giant ants heads "stitching" up the wound, until its healed/repaired up, the ancient "stitches" used by peoples who had the giant ants in their countries
29:03 Okay, that was genuine comedy. I love how both of you are in total agreement over the fact that you wouldn't get along in a stressful situation and would blame the other.
The human sacrifices presented here were not simply a method to control the people. They were also thought to appease the Mayan Gods. As I understand it most archeologists do not fully understand the full meaning of these sacrifices, but never-the-less they did occur. The Mayans were not the only tribe to do this. The Aztecs further north had their own human sacrifices. To the Spanish Conquistadors the Aztec people were seen as depraved!
Not only the Conquistadors but many other South American tribes who had for years been victimized by the Aztecs. They gladly teamed up with the Conquistadors to take down the Aztec empire.
Well, it is implied that the priest and king knew that the solar eclipse was about to occur. And so, they arranged this event to make it look like the gods would "answer" them. I think, with the whole theme of "fear", Mel Gibson was making a statement on civilization - about how rulers always rule via fear, spectacle, and inside knowledge.

In mexico this is sort like a 50/50, some say its a really cool movie and like the action, some other say its a racist movie that tries to portray mexicans as savages and usually use the "historical innacuracies" argument to justify that opinion. Another movie that has this 50/50 split is Sicario (both of them) with the "every mexican must be a narco" trope. I personally think its a great action movie.

The animal in the first scene is a Tapir. Related to the pig family.
I'm thinking she will not do well later in the movie.
Kudos to SH60 Guy for identifying the tapir.
Tapirs are not part of the pig family. They are related to rhinos and horses.

I’m Puerto Rican so not the same area, but the Tainos were the native people in Puerto Rico at the time they were taken over by the Spanish. Watching this movie made me so emotional seeing how they were about to be enslaved, if not worse than what they were doing to each other, by the conquistadors.
You reacted like I did at the twist ending. Glad to see someone else realize the importance of this moment.
Mel makes a heckuva movie. This was done so incredibly well. Loved your reactions!

I started to think those were pilgrims so it would just be a friendly "thanksgiving" type of deal, but realized if they were Mayans, those were Spaniards and there was no "thanksgiving" moments with them. Just conquering and hunting for gold.

This is 1 of the best films of all time. I never get tired of it and it is so original! Love Mel!
Lol i cant stop laughing at how much more queezy hes making her by adding commentary during the sacrifice scene 😂
48:24 The Aztec (the movie decided to use the older advanced Mayan instead) had many enemies who eagerly made up most of the Conquistadors conquering armies. They sacked Tenochtitlan, the Aztec imperial city, with the Spaniards.
This is how u write a ‘strong’ female character 👌🏽
“He who brings the Jaguar” is a reference to Cortez, the conquistador who annihilated the Aztecs. The Aztecs initially believed he was Quetzacotl come to life, their Jaguar God come down to Earth to end the world. Hence why Emperor Montezuma acted so emo when the Spanish first arrived. This movie blends elements of the Aztecs and Maya to create a composite history.
The arrival of the Spanish conquistadors was 🤯 the equivalent of Aliens from outer space making contact.
"Oh my God it.s Pirates," 😂😂😂
And I almost wanna say the first half with the sacrifices and all the other spectacles was the best part before the real action even starts haha 10/10 film from a casual viewer's perspective

not gonna lie with the british accent and everything i really wasn’t expecting the intro but i died laughing hahahahah
On 30:46 it doesn’t mean that they’re not well, it’s a way the Mayans were praying to the gods since their crops were infected by the plague
Hannah is a keeper.

fun fact that I feel I need to share every time I see a movie set during this time in history: the Mayans thought the Spanish ships were mountains.

Yea but that bigger badder dog stoped these massive satanic human sacrifices they did to theire own people.
Spot on
Hannah absolutely nailed it on the head; the sacrifices were purely spectacle to manipulate the masses. The Mayans were so advanced that they could actually predict with great accuracy when solar eclipses were to occur so they made sure their sacrificial ceremony coincided with such an event.
These weren't the Mayas. They are the Aztecs. Far less sophisticated.
The animal they killed in the beginning was a tapir not a ant eater :)
I love how the enemies aknowledge that the prophecies of the little girl are coming true and that the gods are turning against them, slowly filling them up with fear.
Yeah, my class and I went to Florianipolis for last year's vacation and the ants in Brazil were super big.
My dad told me that using the ants was often better than stitches.

This is a great movie. Very under appreciated hidden gem. Mel Gibson is a genius. Keep you the great work. Aloha
This continues to show how Gibson is great as a director. A lot of these actors were unknowns and they’re phenomenal.
Pretty sure they were real indigenous peoples, not actors.
@@XxAverageJoexX no, the one bad guy, who’s son was killed near the end, has been in stuff. Others have too.
Except for a couple of them, NONE of these were professional actors, but people Gibson recruited from workplaces. The main character (the actor) was laying roofs when Gibson discoveted him. So an entire cast of non-actors.

Okay you definitely earned my subscription after that intro 😂😂😂 I thought I clicked the wrong video man
The human sacrifices presented here were not simply a method to control the people.
@@maaziy_ghaziyIYI Jesus is not considered half man half God, he is considered to be God himself.
Its hard to explain in a youtube comment but Jesus is an aspect of the triumvirate, the Father, the Son and the Holy spirit.
The idea of Jesus taking on all the sins of mankind and sacrificing himself does reflect Jewish tradition which used to put their local village's sins upon a goat and sacrifice it, its where we get the term "scape goat" from

Awesome, growing up I always thought this film was like universally loved by Mexicans because it was made by Mexicans, it was crazy and super cool finding out it was Mel Gibson behind it. I’m 20 years old and everytime I bring up apocalypto to my fellow Latinos I make sure to bring up the fact that Mel Gibson made it. Apocalypto is huge amongst us lol, it’s like one of the movies we all grew up watching. At least that’s what I’ve noticed here in Los Angeles
It's an extremely historically inaccurate movie. Gibson did a good job at making it a good and thrilling picture but it's not accurate to the period or Mayan people.
