Omg i'm saying this for years. I'm so glad to hear it from somebody who started with digital. It is just so obvious that people with traditional backround tend to have much more efficent workflow and better understanding on the fundamentals and make less mistake. I don't know how it is even a question.
I love traditional but when it comes to deconstructing or perspective, its easier on digital because of the space and u can extend your perspective point as far as you want, and breaking down the structure on the reference is much faster. However, traditional does have stronger fundamentals especially with colours!
Amazing Video I agree with all of your points. I bought a small pen tablet last year and it was time waste for me bcoz i didn't have knowledge of basics. Now I am learning basics and I use pencil and paper. I have decided to go digital when I become confident with my forms, proportions, perspective, values and contour lines. Digital medium can be fun and time saving if I know basics and practice them and traditional medium is good for that.
That’s awesome that you are taking the time to learn the basics!! I mean, you can learn them with digital as well, but it’s easier to fix stuff so most people feel they don’t have to. Glad to hear you are learning 😊
in which way digital take take you down from you creativity? basics are basics everywhere, you can learn them digitally or traditionally. the only difference is on how you will hold pencil or digital pen. in any case you will not hold digital pen as traditional pencil. you can learn every basic rules, anatomy, etc digitally.
@@jackdanyal4329 you can't learn how to paint properly digitally because traditional media works different from digital media. Especially watercolors. I've yet to see an app that reproduces the way these work and feel accurately. There's many apps that try, but still not totally there. I decided to finally go back to fundamentals and take traditional art classes and oh boy. It's so different! I've learned a lot in few classes. The thing is, that I can apply this knowledge to digital art, where I already master a lot of tools, but I can't apply my digital knowledge to traditional.
One more point actually it's not from a artist point of perspective but a mere humans point of view and humans beings are artists. For my whole life I thought that digital art is expensive to make as compared to traditional and if you look back a decade ago it was true, but now still a lot of people think this, I was one of them untill I got deeply into art things this myself and experience it. Iam telling ppl think trading art supplies are cheap ,yeah low quality ones are but that doesn't give deisired result and there huge difference in results when compared to high quality and low quality ingredients. But when it comes to high quality supplies for most beautiful pleasing professional results they cost a lot a lot. And artist need to restock and have to have more colors, types, etc for obvious reasons. Digital is like one time investment and no need for any colors, markers, etc. Except for a software subscription fees that's too afordable. Yeah I know this isn't actually a point to consider everything has its pros and cons. But from a human point of view with limited money it is.yeah but it matters to me and hurts me I cannot afford things to persuade my likes and hobbies. Btw thanks for video, a new subscriber . Grateful for info and your point of view as comming from a expert this will help a beginner me to develop and learn a lot easier.
Sahil, thank you for sharing your opinion! I really appreciate it :) And I agree with you that at first sight, it looks like digital art is more expensive. Because a pencil VS a tablet has such different price points. But then you do always have to buy new supplies, and the cost quickly adds up. With digital art it's also easier to experiment. Just pick a new brush and you are good to go :) Thanks so much for stopping by and subscribing!
3:45 This is literally me when I try to paint On topic, This was really helpful! I'm a complete novice when it comes to art, besides a few sketches I did years back in school. Got myself a drawing tablet recently, sat down and realised I have no clue what to do haha. So I'm working on the real basics right now, but still finding it a little overwhelming initially. This helped me come to a realisation, what you said about already starting traditional made me realise, hey I totally did! Albeit a good 12+ years since I actually drew anything substantial. I think getting the fundamentals down by traditional means is probably a better starting point before I start to translate those skills over to digital tablet drawing. Plus a pencil and paper is about as simple as it can get, no need to learn the software and everything. Thanks for sharing your views, really helped me decide where to start!
Starting from the basics will build a strong base for every style and medium you want to try in the future! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, it was very interesting to read 😊 And I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 🙏🏻
I'm a digital cartoonist in the vein of Shultz & Waterson, but after watching your video, I'm going to find out what kind of traditional tools they used and redraw my characters using them. I think it'll make me even better. Thanks.
Thanks for this, I suffer so badly with analysis paralysis, so having such a clear and concise explanation is really helpful for me! I think a mistake I made was buying a few online courses from digital artists too soon, they're doing all these quick big changes to their designs and aren't really explaining what fundamental steps they're doing in their thought process. You did good, I will focus on traditional and get my fundy-boys to a higher level 👍🏼
I feel like digital is very over saturated and there are so many good digital artists that its a little intimidating to get into .. so there is almost no reason for me to get into it other then for fun. because ive seen some crazy good digital artists who cant find work. where as there are some half decent canvas . decor painters making good money.... not that its about money but i feel like getting into digital art is an investment since traditional is mostly cheap.
That's definitely a very interesting point. And yet, I can't stop feeling that it's the same for traditional artists as well. I've had the pleasure to encounter many of both kinds, and some say what you do, others say that digital artists have more work because their art is more commercially applicable and reusable. I guess it could be "the grass is always greener on this or that side?". I think it's best to do what feels good and exciting to you. And as long as you are passionate, have your skill and know how to sell yourself/your work - you'll make anything work! But definitely thank you do much for sharing your ideas, it's always good to hear!

Haha, exactly, David! 😊 I feel like we need to talk more about this with starting artists 💪🏻
That's right, that's why I decided to go back to fundamentals and take traditional art classes to improve my digital art.

Great video! I want to start learning to draw. I used to when I was in high school. I’m just using paper and pencil😊.Sonia
Sonia, you got this! Just keep drawing with whatever medium feels right :)
