Hi Gary. I love and am totally motivated with your coastal fine art landscape images but here is the thing, how would you apply your skills and knowledge to a scene that does lot have any water? Is it possible to create a fine art image without that element? What would replace the water when you do not have any? How can you make a standard landscape with only the sky and the land into a fine art image. I ask this because I am surrounded with great countryside but no water. I would have to travel a distance to get to the coast which I will do, but I don’t want to ignore what is around me. That is your challenge! I wait with baited breath for your response. Regards Paul in Cheshire
@@paulwilcock4351 I think with land, especially with vegetation long exposure fine arts become a bit messy as the movement in trees/plants/grass can look weird. But I guess in a scenario where there is a building in the middle of nowhere, with some immovable structures or say even some layers of land which looks incredible with the effect of light; and adding some movement in the clouds, I guess you can capture some fine art landscapes. If it's a farming area, tractors, silos and so on are beautiful subjects in the foreground. Also when it comes to wonderful looking trees, I guess stacking/layering multiple photographs can help in creating some beautiful photographs. All the best Paul.

This makes so much more sense now. I’ve always wondered how people are getting these epic isolated subjects in camera. I thought people weren’t photoshopping things out. But understanding that this is “fine art (possibly crossing into digital art)” and not pure photography makes me feel better about photoshopping unwanted stuff out.
Absolutely , beautiful . I wish I had the skill and patients to sit for 6 hrs. and create that art work . And that's what made Ansel Adams famous, seeing an image, before pressing the shutter . KB.

I often see the term "fine art" but never a definition. I have no idea if your photos are fine art but I think they are superb. Thank you for sharing your art. 🙂
I know this is a very old post Gary as I have watched it a couple of times before so I hope you get this message I could easily sit and watch the whole six hour post processing of this photo I think what you have done is absolutely fantastic I can only strive to be half as good as that.
Words can't express the beauty you brought forth in these images. My photography teacher inspired me 25 years ago to follow my dreams to be a photographer. I admit that the last few years were challenging, but I am back at it. However, I have to say that finding your channel, I have been re-inspired. I am so glad I found your channel. You are breath of fresh air, sir.
If you were taking a 'documentary' photograph and manipulated it to your own 'truth'. It would be a 'lie'. To take a photograph that represents your ' mind's eye' is simply a view-point. A personal interpretation of the 'story' you wish to tell. You are a very good 'story-teller' and I appreciate the 'stories' you have to tell.
Gary, that final image was exceptional. You have created some amazing fine art images but I think this one is my favourite. I think there is absolutely nothing wrong in creating an image to look how you want. There is far too much snobbery in photography about removing or adding items and people saying how you always have to get it right it camera or it’s not true photography. Absolute nonsense! These are the same people that still use post processing to add colour, contrast etc. An image should be what you want it to be. Unless you are a documentary photographer where you are recording exactly what is happening, then you are only limited by your own creative mind. Love your attitude towards photography as well as your images. Fantastic 👍🏻
I know Pin Mill very well having visited mostly by sea since the 60's as a small child in my parents boats and then in my own as an adult. I have seen many vessels gradually return to nature. Many of them ended their working life here including some Thames sailing barges and lived out their remaining years as house boats. It has been a Barge slip for many years and still hosts the Pin Mill Sailing barge race once a year. Your images are the absolute best Ive seen or taken of this place. Thank you so much for sharing Gary.
It's all been said below Gary. A brilliant video with a stunning result. But you do raise a good point which I suspect, a lot of us can't answer. I know what I see, and I know what I don't want to see, but I don't know what I want to see. I don't have an artist's mind so forseeing an end result just doesn't happen. I play with Lightroom and Photoshop and get good results but the end result is not envisaged, and something like this would never have dawned on me in a month of Sundays without watching this blog.. A big thank you. I wiill go and "play" but it will be a voyage of discovery and trying to follow you rather than a planned and thought out route. In admiration and awe, Mike
1 year later and ive just watched this again - I am still in awe of your 2 results - the pano is spectacular BUT the single ship image is just outstanding Mr G. I have finally got the idea of the way to get a compositiopn, the images I get are fine by me AND I am beginning to get the process of how you eliminate backgrounds - just need lots and lots of prectice I guess. You are one seriously gifted mentor in what can be achieved GC - dont stop.
Well said Gary regarding Fine Art as this subject is so subjective. I was wondering around a picturesque town not far from where I live. When I noticed 2 horses in a field by the road side fence. Before I even turned on the camera I knew what was going to do the image. Fine Art ! It is in my top 5 highest viewed / voted image on ePhotozine and viewbug web site ! Many thanks Gary for visiting thus location as it is not too far from me and I will try luck at doing the same as you.
I definitely agree with you. I am mostly shooting street and when I go out I am trying to envision the shots I want to take before I take them. I often get comments like "You made this look good despite..", and I think this is because with photography we can express beauty anywhere.
The number of compositions in that harbor are overwhelming. You Will return there, again and again!! I am not sure if I just witnessed photographic genius or processing artistry......or both. But the black & white final image must be your signature image. I agree with your choice for “Favorite.” Amazing work, Gary. I am totally impressed. Now that you’ve made me feel like tourist with a Polaroid!!🤣
The thing you taught us here is that: wherever you go, if your skills are good enough: you will have one of a kind picture. Because it was YOUR vision. It is stunning, as usual. I didn’t know one could spend that amount of time on a photo. To answer your question: of course it was worth it, and hopefully you are proud of your work. I know I am. As of the place, it reminds me of the videos you made of one of the Hebrides islands a while back: I wonder if no one cares about abandoned/rotten/polluting boats/cars/houses in U.K.? It is fun for an adventurous mind like us, but tragic to watch for me.
Composite or not they are stunning images.. as bob ross used to say... it's your world.. you are the creator anything you want can happen in your world... excellent work Gary.
Stunning images Gary. It's so sad to see these beautiful old wooden hulls rotting away. They themselves are works of art. So glad that you are preserving their memories as they will soon enough be gone forever ..
Brings back many memories, drove or cycled past there many times when living at Shotley Gate and stationed at Wattisham, early 90's. Never gave it much thought then, but with age how my views have changed. Cracking image and well worth the processing marathon! Just one point would'nt call Suffork SE coast, that would be Kent!
Talk about a target-rich environment!! Brilliant photo! I prefer to photograph what I want to see.... to a degree. I'm not into sky replacements etc, but long exposure I'm more than OK with.
Gary, I love watching your videos. I'm 37 and have learned so much from you. I use this video for reference every few months. One thing I would have loved for you to shoot is the scene at 8:14 and only keep the 3 main bows. I think it would add to the drama by having three stacked upon each other. If you ever go back -- or do another followup to this -- you should grab that shot for me/us :-)
Brilliant Gary, I live in Felixstowe and have just got back into photography, have dabbled over the years but now want to take it up as a serious hobby. Pin Mill was on my list and after watching your video I am going to Spend Saturday there 21/08. I have been watching your videos and Mali's also, both of you are enjoyable to watch and informative, the work you put into the 12 photo pano was definitely worth it, sublime.
I'm not saying this just because you're my Dad but you absolutely, ABSOLUTELY nailed that last (12 shot pano) shot! Brilliant 👏👏👏
Thank you Son, consider yourself promoted to my number 1 child again 😁😁

Your lads right Gary, its a belter. I really liked the colour version too.

Simply wonderful photographic art.
I love fine art photography and this is what I been searching for. Not what my eyes see but what I want to see.

Six hours of post processing is more than "Fine Art". It is a labour of love. Beautiful image.
Cheers Greg xx

I love the fact that you show us your workflow of how you arrived at the image. Shows much creative effort is required in taking these images.

Wow Gary , you Black and white is awesome
Loved the final image, Gary (but prefer it in colour). Good job in Photoshop.
This is one of your best in my opinion, that final image is just wonderful. wish my post processing was that good.
Having the vision, the ability to see that final images. You are making art, not just snapping a picture.
Amazing pano! Loved the single boat as well but the Pano 🖤 wow
Perhaps your best video!

One word... Wow!
Great end result but what would you do if Lightroom or other programmes were unavailable.
Would love to see a video on techniques you use to cleanup the background. Please! Love the boat and the pano. The pano maybe a bit more.
The first image is just beautiful but the final image is absolutely awesome 💯👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
