Review: Zoom IQ7 Microphone

- Here is a review of the Zoom IQ7 microphone that plugs into iOS devices via the lightning connection. I am not the most tech savvy, but I found the microphone to be an easy way to make better audio recordings.
The IQ7 can be used with the camera and voice memo apps that you probably already use. In addition, you can use the zoom handy record app that gives you more features both during and after you record audio. You can also extract a WAV file and import it into garage band or iMovie for more post-production editing on your mac or PC.
The microphone is very compact and will allow you to make the audio much better on a device that you already own. It sells for around $100, and I highly recommend it!

Good info. I've had a heckuva time finding reviews of this thing.
M/S is "mid/side", a way of recording stereo instead of straight left/right that helps improve stereo imaging when you can't space the mics far apart.

So if I am trying to record a video with my iphone and i want better sound quality does that work together? Or is this only with a sepperate application for audio recording only ?
Hi! I don't know much English. I really liked your videos! I bought myself such a microphone, but there is a strange noise on the recording. airplane mode on the phone is turned on and I record using the official application. How do you make the perfect sound? I wanted to do something similar to ASMR, but the noise spoils everything

2022 iq5 good? I have iphone 11 and its original earphones what can you say, also what about earbuds pro of iPhone
What about using the mic in a true stereo L & R format when the phone is held horizontal like a TV when videoing events on a football field? The IQ5 was perfect for this and you can rotate the “ball” to get the left right horizontal stereo image. This one doesn’t look you can do this. Please let me know.
It can be rotated two ways. It should work for you.
1.- What about using this mic in a conference, Distant 5 meters from the lecturer?
2.- I suppose it comes with a program that let it work as if it were a Zoom h4n. Is that right?
+MARIO COMEQ I should work just fine for a conference. Just keep a check on the green lights and limit any noise that's closer to the mic than the speaker. For instance, applause by people close to the mic would be loud on the recording.
I wanted to buy one in order to use it to register my lessons at the university. What do you think about? Would it be useful?

+محمد السعدون No. The video feature will turn off the Zoom App. I usually use imovie to adjust my audio after I have made the video. If you have a mac computer, it's much easier to navigate for post production edits than the imovie app.

+محمد السعدون The h1 is another devise to carry around and doesn't video. It's up to you to figure out what will work best for you. Good luck!
+Bryan Haywood yeh because I need the sound tracks to be separated and not combined with video... I want sound tracks to be saved separately .. Hence I can adjust them later without affecting the recorded video 👍🏼

+Darrell Wingerak the q8 and q4n are the only models that have video capability. The iq5, iq6, and iq7 are microphones that only work by attaching them to an apple device. All of the other models are stand alone devices for audio recordings only. Hope this helps!
Can I use the audio effects and mastering of the ZOOM Handy Recorder App also for the Video tone, or is it just in voice recording mode available?
Great question. The app only allows you to adjust tone when you are recording audio in the app. Using the microphone for video does record a nice clean sound though that’s tons better than the phone microphone. If you have experience in audio production, you could tweak the sound afterwards.

Hi Bryan can you comment on how to transfer the audio files in the Handy Recorder Apps to your MAC computer please?
+John Jenkins Hi John. The easiest way to transfer large files is to plug in your iOS device into your computer as you would normally do to sync it. When you go to itunes and click on the analysis of the device you can go to apps and you can click on the Handy Recorder App and choose the files that you want to transfer. It's easy once you do it one time. Smaller files can be emailed. Hope this helps!
Does the iq7 works with iPhone 6 or 5? Or have to be iPhone 7 and up with lighting port only? Thanks
Peng Chen it has the lightning connector. There are adaptors available for earlier additions of the iPhone I believe.

steliyana dulkova for most uses I would say they are pretty comparable. If you are doing audio only recording using the zoom app, then the iq7 would give you more options.
Bryan Haywood Thank you for your reply. I record videos only with my camera app ( I just don't want to do any editing and syncing) and I am trying to find an upgrade from my iq5. Would you recommend anything else that would work with the iPad camera app directly or I got filmic pro now but I don't see much difference in the sound using my zoom and filmic pro app or the camera app...

Yes. It will fit with any iOS device that uses a lightning connector, including iPhones and iPads.
Except if your iphone batteries are low your screwed? Need to power the iphone while recording....

And Zoom didn't fix this glaring shortcoming in the USB-C Am7 version, either. They could have easily fit another USB-C port on the side opposite the headphone jack for power pass-through, but they didn't. Maybe they'll release only that feature exactly that a year later and force you to buy it again.

It works together. Just plug it in and start recording your video. As long as the light is green, it’s working.
