    Mv88 2:23, Zoom 2:33, Iphone Mic 3:20.......Good test but we need quick reference, if you do more of these vids, its a good idea to put a text box in the frame stating where the audio is coming from for people who want quick a/b tests. The zoom sounds a bit louder, imo it would have been good to match the db in post to compare headroom, a recording in a few different spots would be beneficial as well, your computer fan is quite loud in these tests, especially the zoom

    Zoom is clearer with more presence (high frequencies). I’ve used it recording piano and acoustic guitars and find heaps of lows & highs to tweak in post production. The sure has some kinda low frequency boost so would be better for high squeaky voices.

    Can ANYONE tell me if the MV88 rotates at the capsule? Like, I know it can move forward from the straight position, but I'm looking for the mic to face forward per the camera as i'm recording a video with the mid facing true right and left stereo. My iQ7 can do it, but after 3 years, it has broken, so I'm wondering if this is a viable replacement. Again, this is for forward-facing video recording with hopes of getting stereo audio.

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  6 лет назад

      R P great question. I know it rotates to the 90 so it’s facing forward and the App has an adjustment for stereo width. I’d pick one up through Amazon and see if it gives you what you want. If it doesn’t returning should be now problem. amzn.to/2NT1Dxx tomorrow is prime day on Amazon. Lots of deals as well.

    I think the zoom is more focused on vlogging and speech recording where as the sure could be used for music or ambient recording and sound effects.

    I prefer the zoom, now, this is also based on the monitoring device, in my case, closed back headphones. it may be completely different with alternatives. the zoom seemed to have compression/limiter characteristics i didn't hear with the shure, but that could also be the headphones. Tough choice but better than the internal mic. what about a neumann u47?

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  6 лет назад +1

      Kevin Grosklags I probably need to take some time playing with the apps to see if any of the settings can improve or change the sound the mic is picking up in a meaningful way.

    Which Mic is best Sure or Zoom after your experience? According to me, sure is looking good but we can not use headphone/ hear phone at the same time when we use in new i phones. On that basis Zoom will be better. we can use the headphone at the time of recording. So give your suggestions.... please...

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  5 лет назад

      Baby's Magic Desk I like the Sure better, for some reason, but the sound difference is negligible. I use them both based on which on I can find at the time. So. If you need a headphone jack the Zoom is a better option.

    Both add-on mics are obviously a huge improvement over the native iPhone mic. The Shure recording was the better of the two, but I don't know distance of mics, angle, directional option chosen, or any other mic settings... I suspect both mics are equally good.

    It's not obvious how to point the Zoom IQ7, so a little clarification might help:
    Both the IQ7 and the MV88 what are called "mid-side" stereo microphones. Each of them has two component microphones of different types, one of which (a cardioid) should be aimed at the center of the sound (generally the direction the camera is pointing). The other (with a "figure-8" pattern) needs to be aimed to the left and right. With the Shure both component mics are in a single little tube and it's fairly obvious how to point it, though you may need to remind yourself to turn it so L and R aim toward the left and right. With the Zoom the component mics are visible as separate things so it's more confusing. One of them is labeled L-R with a little triangle in between. make sure the triangle points and the subject and L and R point left and right and you're OK, which seems clear enough once it's pointed out but otherwise can seem mysterious.
    Speaking of mysterious, the third "M-S" position of the 3-way switch on the IQ7 is for recording in raw "mid-side" stereo as opposed to normal L-R stereo. M-S stereo is a little like raw video. That is, you can't use it without converting it in post, but it gives you more control. With mid-side (M-S) stereo you can set the angle between the left and right virtual microphones in post, or even extract a perfect monophonic signal just by using the "mid" channel. The other two settings tell the microphone to decode the stereo at one of the two preset angles internally, which means that it outputs a normal L-R stereo pair. The Shure MV88 lets you do this as well but gives you more choices.
    Both microphones are very good. I think you get more with the Shure but you also pay about half again as much for it. Zoom also has a different mic called the IQ6, with a pair of microphones pointing in different directions as on the bigger Zoom recorders. I don't think they are suited to video use because it appears to me that they can't be aimed the way the camera is pointing. (If I'm wrong about that someone please correct me!)
    One more thing for completeness: With an M-S stereo recording you have a middle channel and a side channel. The side channel is usually arranged so that sounds come from the left are in phase with middle channel and those from the right are 180 degrees out of phase. This means that if you add the middle and side channels the sounds from the left are reinforced and those from the right cancel out. This gives you a left stereo channel. To get a right stereo channel you invert the phase of the side channel and add it to the middle channel so now the sounds from the right are reinforced and those from the left cancel. By giving different weights to the side and middle channels when you add them together you can change the angle of the virtual L and R microphones. If you weight the side channel as zero you get only the middle channel, which yields monophonic souind. It's very clever but you might have to think about it a few minutes to get it straight. At least it wasn't immediately clear to me!

    I’ve had the SHURE MV88 for some time and has served me well, though after hearing about the Zoom one I’m starting to wish I had that one instead because of the built-in 3.5mm Headphone Jack & Gain Adjustment Dial/Knob. My SHURE had a pretty useless Headphone Extension Cable that was just seemingly tossed into the box as an afterthought, there’s nowhere on the MV88 to plug it into & my iPhone only has the Lightning Port on it so why put it in there SHURE???

    Definitely not the internal mic. The two mics both sounded good. I suppose the MV88 maybe by a tiny bit. I like the features on the other one with the controls on it plus being able to plug in your headphones. How do they both do in a windy situation? I would assume the MV88 might win out because of the windscreen. Great review. Thanks for sharing with us.

    They all sound so close together yes there's a tiny bit difference but the main noticeable difference is loud sound pressure levels like in a club where you have to shout to talk at the table that's when the built-in phone mic totally craps out and the others become completely day and night better-sounding this comparison didn't really address what they're mostly made for

    Zoom is a better sound, more crisp and dynamic. I recently bought the Shure because Zoom has too much scratching interferences while video streaming, so hopefully the Shure doesn't have this problem. But sound wise the MV88 is too conservative, a little flat and - if I may say - boring.

      And, incidentally this is a good video because it brings attention to the two higher-quality mics that are plug-&-play into the lighting port of your cell or tablet. It's 2024, and even after 6 years of this video post the Zoom iq7 and the Sure MV88 remain the best-sounding all around microphones for a lighting-port connector on a cell phone or tablet. I'm have used the Sure for my Snap-chat characters skits on my channel here, and the fact that don't have to set-up any video mount with this mic has saved the for lots of improvised ideas. And I'm buying the Zoom iq7 now in 2024 just to make sure I have a good cellphone mic around me at all times. I'm expecting that the Zoom might be better for music recordings, and the Sure MV88 ideal for larger spaces and speech/spoken-word stuff. Can't wait to try it!
