To add to that, it was also the first time we saw Sasha lipsync. She had never been in the bottom two, never had to LSFYL, and so we went into that Sasha v Shea lipsync not knowing what to expect. And she annihilated it. As someone who relates to Sasha immensely, as the quirky, artsy, kinda introverted one, it was soooo satisfying to see her shine in all her glory just when it mattered most.

And after seeing Sasha perform live (literally life changing), it's so clear to me how much of her style of comedy contributed to those challenges, especially with her Russian spy character. I hope she is able to grace the race again one day. A lot of people need to be reminded of how amazing she is.

Surprised to learn that so many people didn’t like Sasha’s storyline. I absolutely adore it and it’s the thing that made me fall in love with drag race. Don’t get me wrong Shea is an icon but Sasha using her unique drag to honor her mother and ultimately winning due to revealing her bald head, which she shaved to honor her mother, just felt poetic. Kind of like what you said about Yvie in your last video, it’s a great argument for the storyline overruling track record imo.
Also I would say for so much of the season it seemed like Ru just didn’t get Sasha’s drag. There were so many moments where I thought she’d win and would just end up safe. I loved that Sasha was an academic. Season 9 was one of the first seasons I watched, and until then, naive little 20yo me had the idea that all drag queens were party girls or something (which is also valid, don't get me wrong). Still being in the middle of university, I loved Sasha showing her academic side and showing me that drag had so much more diversity than I thought. Plus I loved all her academic jokes because I could relate to them as a student. Remember how she was spewing academic nonsense about 'phallocentric this and that' in front of RuPaul and RuPaul just looked at her like 'what'? Honestly most of these “worst” winner storylines are all because of production doing a bad job and is completely no fault of the queens.
Like Kylie is the winner that keeps me up at night because of how she won but that’s all because the production made her a side character with no merit for her accomplishments in the competition while amazing queens with great storylines through the season (Rajah, TKB, Eureka) were getting their deserved flowers. Then in the final minutes of the season they just ambush us with a very questionable win because as a viewer Kylie was the 4th best finalist. Literally all they had to do was crown the person with the best storyline and performance (Rajah) or give Kylie the wins she deserves and the screen time she needs. Like production fumbled the last moments hard.
Then with Kita it’s all in the video like they had all their money on Scarlet and Karen then when the controversies come out they were left with Kita as the only viable winner when Kita actually did really good on the season. Kita was actually so shafted on the season and her storyline would’ve been amazing if the producers weren’t stupid.
Then Krystal absolutely destroyed in UK3 especially with very strong finalists, but Ru’s gleaming love for her and not getting wins she deserved in the latter half of the season, along with her being completely overshadowed near the end made her seem like an undeserving winner in the final moments when that’s completely not the case. Another L for production
Then another winner edit I find to be lacklustre is Sasha Colby’s. The whole season it felt like the show was TELLING us how great she is instead of SHOWING us. Sasha had her good moments but with Anetra, Luxx and Mistress having such amazing developed storylines Sasha just felt a lot more stale. Also some of her wins were weird and it felt like she was never in a vulnerable position because the producers never trusted her to succeed on her own merit. If the show let Sasha be instead of the slight handholding they were doing I feel her eventual win would be more organic.
Then you have Jaida which is the epitome of a wtf production moment. Like of course the Sherry situation was all that but what were they doing. I honestly fear what the edit would be like if it was the original edit and storyline and how much they’d overshadow Jaida then.
I could go on but you get the point. These bad edits and storylines are by all means the productions fault

as for season 7, i feel like untucked was such an integral part of the storytelling, and violet definitely came out a winner in those, like ginger and kennedy looked real bad in the pre-finale episode. i do wonder though why WOW didn't bring that energy to the main episodes as much.

Rajah is one of my favorite queens ever, probably my favorite queen, but I will die on the hill that Kylie's win was the most exciting and satisfying win I've seen recently on Drag Race not only because of how unexpected it was, because it was amazing that the show awarded a queen who was able to sail through the season flawlessly without having to go "bigger" with her personality and instead decided to be really really smart about it. Often more soft spoken or shy queens are given this critique that they have to show "more vulnerability" or "more of them" or "they don't know them" and Kylie was extremely clever and just shared with the show what she wanted to share and refused to be louder or to change her demure persona in order to prove she could be funny. She could had made her whole journey through the show based on her trans experience and identity and as a trans woman myself I'm SO HAPPY that herself on the show said out loud "I'm not here to be the trans girl". She instead chose to showcase that she was confident without the need to be cocky and only brought up her insecurities (her southern accent) when it made sense with the challenge. People don't give her credit for how intelligent she was but she is one of the few, maybe the only winner alongside/since Bianca, who took complete control over all of her narrative and won the competition on her own terms.

Regarding Violet, I think comparing how her and Ginger were presented in Untucked vs the main show is vital in understanding her story. Ginger was portrayed much more kindly in the main show and presented a very different side in Untucked. Very different to Violet who was shown and we as an audience were told as rude vs Untucked where she was laughing, being more human, and showing maturity. It’s like Untucked and the main show couldn’t decide who was the protagonist and who was the antagonist in S7

tyra's winner edit was also like VERY questionable bc they were straight up villifying her and constantly showing ppl on her season badmouthing her for simply being talented. sure she was a bit annoying in the werkroom but she most of the criticisms directed at her were simply bc she was doing great in the competition. the edit had some bits where they showed how focused tyra was in the competition bc of her son, but it were some tiny bits that would later be ignored thanks to werkroom drama.

Honestly, Kita's situation manages to be worse than Sasha's and Jaida's combined. Sasha was not set up to be the winner, but because of a new twist whose results were seemingly not expected by the production, she ended up eliminating the intended winner (Shea), but at the very least it was an iconic moment, Jaida was intended to be sidelined, but because one of the queens that was supposed to get the focus ended up being a criminal, they had to edit out the main storyline that involved her and the queen that I think was intended to be the winner (Gigi), which led to a season with a lot of disconnect and thus, a winner that doesn't feel like she has a storyline.
Kita's situation, as you said, is a combination of both, but what makes it worse than them combined is the fact that the production new. Shitty Pie was not known to be a criminal until the season was actually announced, so it makes sense that the production had to rush with a statement and a new edit to exclude her. However, in Down Under 1, it was obvious that they intended to crown Scarlet Racist from the beginning, but unlike the other one, they actually knew it during filming and literally addressed it in an episode with an unconvincing apology from her and the choice to keep her in the competition.
They could have easily disqualified Scarlet imediatly, but chose to keep her all the way to the top 4 despite acknowledging her actions, and instead of at least making her a villain in the season and not giving her any wins, or just sending her home when she fell in the bottom, they just pretended that weak ass apology was gonna be enough, so we ended up with a top 4 of a racist queen that would never be accepted by the community as a winner, another queen that was already gathering controversy (Karen), an eliminated queen that came back with no merit whasoever and Kita, the one that was left. They found out about it before filming, just give Kita the winner edit.

Kind of like undermining, because the viewers see Violet as this "improved self-reflected" queen while Ginger stuck in the "past"? If that makes any sense?

Lip syncing being one of the main premises of the show which Ru has stressed himself several times.
Not only that but if you think about it if Sasha and Shea ever ended up in the bottom together, Sasha probably would have won the lipsync and sent her home. Whether people like that the crown is decided on a lipsync or not, the challenge is the challenge.

I just rewatched season 7 and if I'm honest the only reason I think people think violets storyline is a bad one is because it came off the heels of season 5 and 6 Which have 2 of the strongest winner storylines ever. Violet grew a ton that season and if you paid attention. She was a completely different queen by the end of the season. Untucked even further emphasized this if you watched it and i genuinely think compared to recent drag race her storyline is actually fantastic.

  • @TheZiBuKs
    @TheZiBuKs 7 месяцев назад +3

I started watching the show at season seven because that's when it first became available in my country and I don't know if I would've kept watching if Violet hadn't won. She just had that IT factor. I was completely shocked to see the reactions afterwards because in my mind she was the clear winner. Her wins felt the most deserved, her never landing in the bottom because of her looks and her attitude, which at the time didn't feel worse than Kennedy or Ginger's because you could actually see her growth - I was super happy she won and think she did great for herself after.
And when it comes to Kylie: I was rooting for her and very upset she was thrown in the bottom for certain challenges and not win or get high on others, where I was sure she had them in the bag, so to me, there was no way she could win, but then she did and it was the first time I cried for someone winning a reality show. That finale also was hers to win only, a great verse and that epic lipsync moment? I would've been happy for Rajah too, but since that would've been more expected because she actually got her flowers in wins and by the edit, Idk, it just made it that much more special to see Kylie win.
I think the franchise with the worst winner storylines is clearly the UK and they definitely need to work on that, which it kinda feels like they did when looking at the last winner, but even then you could make a strong case for Michael, so I'm not really sure.
I used to love rewatching the show, but many things like the edits or weird storylines really made certain seasons almost/entirely unwatchable for me, which is sad because at the end of the day I think we're all watching because we wanna see these amazingly talented queer artists thrive.

Sasha Velour is the most frustrating edit in my opinion because they could have easily given her the ball win or the makeover. Honestly the season should have had the storyline of Sasha and Shea both being super strong competitors who were neck in neck, it would have been a tighter more competitive season. Instead, Sasha was edited to be Shea’s sidekick who could only win with Shea, which was very strange since Sasha gave several win worthy individual performances in the season. I was so happy that Sasha won because it felt like retribution to an edit that tried to gaslight us into seeing Sasha as a weaker competitor than she was.

Jaida's case was something that not even the producers expected.
The edition of the seasons always points to 2 possible/probable contenders for the final, and in S12 it was Gigi and Sherry, the abuse allegations happened and Gigi became the clear winner from Madonna's rusical. The final came and the covid too, and with it the rules to produce their shows from home, until Gigi was almost decoded for recording "take on me" in a studio and not in her home like Crystal and Jaida did. Then production saw that Jaida had 3 challenges won, a good track record and above all, a fair winner that no one saw coming until that moment.
Part of all this is addressed in AS7 with the breakdown that Jaida had when she still did not assimilate that she was a fair winner
A similar situation happened with Down Under 1, where Kita Mean turned out to be the winner, a fair and clean winner that we only realized in the final.

She came in, was instantly set up as the one to beat, had a really great start with 2 wins early on, and then got sidelined for the rest of the season bc she didn't do well in the weeks upon weeks of comedy challenges. Imo they also saved her a LOT during those challenges, and gave her random wins like the one for the Merkel runway.

I think it can explain how on a number of occasions a queen who, while deserving of a win, objectively didn’t get the winners edit but was given the win. i.e. they saw more potential in terms of casting future seasons for some queens and kept them open to be able to compete again.

Plus she deffo won the last episode (Sasha won the last regular episode so production pick and chose when it counts as a win) so KV had 3/4 wins on S3 imo and as Jack says Ru was obsessed and it’s a rightful win and she stands out against the other campy queens on the UK franchise winners circle.

I felt the same way about UK 4, at one point it felt like the Danny and Cheddar show and everyone else's was paid dust (specially Dakota and Jonbers). Dakota would've been a great finalist if her performances were judged better and Jonbers could've been given the win in the last challenge so she had a more solid trackrecord going into the finale.

I also love Krystal and she was clear winner for me, AND I also think the fact that ru loved is just as much of a valid reason for her to be crowned. I think people like to say she won cause ru liked her, and there's some truth to that (even tho her immense polish and talent factor in as well) I just don't think it's a bad thing. It is his show after all and impressing ru personally, rather than just having a good track record, is still very important

@@gaelisaias well it was the Danny & Cheddar show they performed very well! Lol 🤷🏾‍♂️(One time I would have been okay with a double win and tie) but alas I well agree that Dakota was overlooked and maybe yea Jonbers could have got one win in there.

Honestly not Raja but when Trinity got eliminated I was screaming because Trinity truly had the biggest redemption arc in that season. But when they didn’t give the Super Bowl performance to her I knew she wasn’t going to win and producers preferred other queens storylines over her

If they had given Sasha the win in the first episode and makeover, she would have had 4 wins, and been on par with Shea, and then it would be fine

To be honest i think Sasha Velour deserved 1-2 more wins during the show, for example the Snatch Game. I think Ru and the production were more or less forced to give her the win after the final lipsyncs but because they hadn´t plan it all along and because she wasn´t their favorite she didn´t get as much airtime or wins during the season. That said, i think Shea deserved the win just as much.

DAE find it odd that Sherry did so well in the beginning, but then doesnt win anything else? I mean that was before the re-edit. They didn't edit who won the challenges. Just so odd to me.

I think Violet and Krystal are two examples of how cumulative runway performance has more of an effect than we talk about. They were both extremely consistent and dominant on the runway, and that really did a lot to make them seem more like winners.

the days of one or two challenge wins and winning the season are over. now it's about overall performance of the season which is much better. crystal is the only uk winner that doesn't have the personality to carry a show on her own. i really thought it was going to be ella or kitty. so glad that the winners since then have been big comedic personalities. you're right that i don't remember crystal's wins. ginger's win though was the most decisive. she excelled in all the challenges. the ones she didn't win, she almost won (and probably should have). even the stuff that michael won i thought ginger was going to win. i guess they couldn't give every win to one person. i really thought raja was going to take that. glad that she got the uk vs the world title though.

Speaking of Rajah i kind of see her winning CvsTW as an apology for not winning AS6 as imo she did well on that season but the win should have gone to either Silky or Victoria as they both did much better in the competition, I seem to remember Rajah only getting in the top 2 once and not winning a lip sync untill the final, I love her but it felt weird

The funny thing about Rajah is the season she did end up winning (Canada vs The World) would fit into this video. While she fully deserved the win, I feel like production was trying to push Silky as the winner. UK vs The World also did this as Pangina and Jimbo’s storyline was being heavily pushed until they got eliminated earlier than expected which definitely messed up things with the storyline. It was between Blu, Baga, and Mo Heart as they all pretty much had the same track record.

I love Sasha I think you could have won more challenges in their season like if she would have won the ball or snatch game nobody would complain that she didn't deserve to win based on challenges and would even the field for the four finalist

  • @Pippis78

I agree - I don't think the winners didn't _deserve_ their wins, but on a few occations I would rather have liked to see someone else win.
Ginger over Violet, Rajah over Kylie and Gigi or even Crystal Methyd over Jada for sure. I was extatic when my favourite Sasha won, but felt really bad for Shea who kinda _deserved_ the win for dominating the whole season (Sasha coming as a very close second). Shae's later all stars win later on the contrary felt a little off and like she won as a compensation for not winning her own season.
I've felt since the start that they often want a very certain kind of queen to win. Sort of like "We've had two fashion queens win, this time we want a comedy queen" or "we've had 4 white winners in a row, now is a black queen's turn" or "time to give the win to a trans person for the first time!" But as I said, I don't remember ever thinking someone didn't deserve their win. I've always been supportive to the winners and can see the merits they won by.
In the season long eliminations I'm constantly riled up honestly 😂

willow started the season so strong, and than the edit just forgot about her, the hole season was so dragged that no one seemed like a strong contender in the end, but willow only had one win in a 90 episode season (and she deserved so much the talent show win, cause is the bathtub everyone remembers)

  • @RubBH
    @RubBH 7 месяцев назад +2

Agreed. I think that in some cases, the production didn't aime them to win. Like kata min for example. This season was way too much produced, that after it aired and the backlash, they couldn't give it to the other queen they planned for.
I think similar, but with less obvious produced and wins gap, happened with Jaida. Third will be Sasha as a surprise with the lip sync.
Nonetheless they are all! Deserved and for sure were contendents for the win themselves.
