It ironic that people are oblivious to the fact different engines require different octane ratings to prevent misfires and engine knock. I'm not even a car guy! Lol
@@dannyg2197 engine was tuned to run on higher octane fuel, of course it’ll run, and maintained it shouldn’t break down, but the loss in power and gas mileage eats at the money you saved putting in the lower grade gas
@@GregGuitarist98 There was no difference in gas mileage whatsoever. I clocked it plenty of times to see if there was a difference. Especially someone like me who was driving an hour to the city every day it saved a good amount of money over time

I hope this is already in here somewhere, but in case it's not: Octane is a combustion INHIBITOR. It's purpose in gasoline is to prevent pre-ignition, which is detonation of the fuel/air charge before the correct time in the firing sequence. Use the lowest your car's manufacturer recommends. Hey I love the clips but the background music is distracting. It's simultaneously too quiet to hear properly, and loud enough to take away from what Ari's saying. Cheers, can't wait for the special!
Also due to tuning and spark advance… (ignition) also air fuel ratio is easier to control from how the fuel burns. Yes higher octane for high compression but also used for lower compression as well. Just depends on complete setup and tuning. It’s like saying Boost pressure on a forced induction car… when you Alter say the intake or exhaust (this can include tb’s, manifolds, valves, cams, head porting etc.) will reduce boost pressure but increase flow… which can lower what causes compression. Just as valves and cams a cam has a degree of rotational angles that can push valves further into the block. I’ve built many imports and domestics. Tuned them as well. But it also has to do with gear ratio and load too. Which can cause detonation
the middle gas is so stupid, every car is designed to run either 87 or 91 in the united states. you can get away with 85 in high elevation areas but theres absolutely no reason to run 89
For real. They need to switch it to where 87 is the lower, 91 is the middle, and 100+ is the upper. When the compression ratio is high enough to warrant 91, that is only the minimum the engine can take to prevent preignition. But a high compression engine can also handle well into the 100-120 range if you want to put a lot more pep in your car's step. You'd have to figure out a way to prevent people who don't know about this stuff from putting 120 in like an 8:1 engine though lol
@@KrikZ32 ah okay. I'm in TN and it's 87, 89, 93. Some of the bigger stations have a 91 option too but most only have the three. I'll be moving to Texas for work soon enough 😁

Anybody with decent mechanical knowledge cant find this joke funny, theres no base to this joke, higher octane fuel means it can withstand more compression before detonating, so if you use too low an octane itll ignite before its supposed too, which will cause engine damage if youre lucky, if youre not lucky itll shit its guts on the floor eventually, so for the extra few cent/pence you could save yourself 4k in repairs for an engine, if not then make sure your insurance covers mechanical failures. Also nevermind the fact bad fuel quality can kill your lift pumps ect if the fuel in question has a lot of alcohol in it
Realistically as a mechanic, get the octane your car calls for, & don't go lower, you can go higher. Octane sets the burn speed & that effects ignition timing, too low octane causes knock (little explosions) which the computer adjusts the timing for no knock & burn smooth. This hurts performance/ efficiency. When your car is tuned on the correct octane you get the most efficient burn & best milage/ performance, when the factory tunes for a specific octane, you going away from that also goes away from the efficiency. For those wondering.
yes some cars only work with high octane specially turbo ones, but the same cars work in usa and europe with diferent octanes.... so its all a scam from the manufactures and yes some sporty cars only work with hight octane but most of them dont need it like corolas and etc
@@thepro08 the octane rating system in Europe is just different as far as I understand so the recommendation is different. - it's not a scam, its not like manufacturers are the ones selling you the gas.
