    • @spleck615
      @spleck615 5 лет назад +1

      Yes.. had a trip recently where it was pretty cold so range was a bit more limited and they limited me to 80% automatically at the Knoxville TN charger that stays fairly busy, and they immediately warn you to stay below 55mph to reach your next destination when departing the charger... instead of routing me to a closer charger or not limiting to 80%. Either would be fine.. but nope. Instead they send me into panic attack mode. GGs Tesla. *sigh*

    A little trick for people coming to a slightly more northern region (like Quebec). If you arrive in winter at a Supercherger terminal, first choose a terminal that has just been released at a free terminal. Thus, if the terminal has just been released, it is still hot, so will transmit the maximum power faster than a terminal that must itself warm up before it can deliver its power.

    Attention off-grid folks: :Tesla advises to keep your car plugged in when not in use )ie when you get home from work). But like me, what if you do NOT have a 110 service, I live off-grid in a house I built myself, There are separate and redundant systems for each area: living room kitchen, bathroom etc. I bought my long range model 3 on June 2, 2021 in Portland OR and charged it 100% in Bend Oregon. (356 miles) I live 135 miles east in Christmas Valley and arrived with 219 miles. Over the course of the next three days I drove less than 8 miles a day but every morning I showed a loss of an additional 20 miles. Tesla explained that one can never shut the Tesla off as there are numerous component that require power. I got a bit nervous as I only had 150 miles of range left and the nearest Supercharger was in Klamath Falls Oregon 130 miles west. I made it with 12 miles of range remaining. So range is an elusive number. It depends on your use of the air conditioner and how often you make it go super fast.
    Prior to purchasing my model 3 I asked all over the internet how I could use the sun to charge at home. (True, I could have gone a mile or so to a neighbor to charge overnight but elected not to.) So here is my solution: I bought 8 one hundred watt solar panels i wired in parallel to make 24 volts and then in series (four 24 volts) which cost about $800 with the cables and clamps. An MPPT charge controller accepting 12 or 24 volts which cost $279, two 12 volt deep cycle batteries costing $280 and a 10,000 watt modified sine wave inverter costing $229. Cables and fuses cost another $134, For a grand total of $1801. This inverter provides 220 volts and charges 28 miles per hour.Anyone living off grid with no access to 110 might find my solution will work for them. In short you may not need to visit a supercharger that often.

    Drove from New Jersey to Disney World in November with my Model 3 Performance. At first I let the Tesla GPS set my charging stops but after the first stop I realized I had over 20% battery when I arrived and could have easily made the next one along I-95. So after that I manually picked each one until I found the one with the closest to 10% charge when arriving. That worked better for me. Oh, and if you have to stop at the Savannah Georgia station, it is at the airport. Just navigate to it inside the parking garage. When leaving go to the far left toll booth with your parking ticket. They will not charge you for being there.

  • @angusmerlin2

    Another thing I take into consideration is the number of chargers at a given supercharger location. I have found that it is not uncommon for one and sometimes 2 of the chargers to be down. If there are a larger number of stations available at a given location, you have a better chance of being able to immediately charge.

    Two additional notes for urban drivers. First, as you said, the urban chargers max out at 72kW, so will charge more slowly, although I use this to my benefit, as regular chargers don't give me enough time for a meal :-) Second, urban chargers are often located in the parking garages in malls, and there are often parking fees -- for example the one at the Prudential parking garage in Boston costs $12 minimum, plus charging costs; this is not well reflected in any of the tools offered by Tesla or A Better Route Planner.

    One advantage of having more battery available is power for unexpected issues such as a traffic jam, terrible weather, a flat tire or some combination of those. Having just enough power causes a ton of stress that can be prevented with anothrr 15 mins or so in remote locations. I've owned my own trucking company and designed my own auxiliary power unit (gas generator). I have saved my own ass about 10 times by having extra gasoline available for the issues i just mentioned in extreme heat and cold. My new July/Aug 2023 MY (7 seat) I'll apply that same idea.

  • @nilsfrederking62
    @nilsfrederking62 5 лет назад +2

    My guess why Tesla is so hesitantly installing V3 Superchargers is that they have an even more powerful "V4" in the works, so it actually would then make sense to wait till these are in production.

    • @nilsfrederking62
      @nilsfrederking62 5 лет назад +2

      @Matthew Huszarik Which then would relate to Tesla being battery constrained (more precisely need them for their cars), as battery storage on the Supercharger locations could partially solve that problem.

    • @nilsfrederking62
      @nilsfrederking62 5 лет назад +1

      @Matthew Huszarik Supercapacitors have a very low energy density compared to li-ion batteries (as far as I remember it is around 1/30 for the ones with the highest energy density) but they are great in cycle live (over a million). So they would be to expensive and cost to much for the amount which you would need.

    Don’t think we have A Better RoutePlanner yet here in Australia. You cannot afford to skip Superchargers here in an SR+ as they are about 200kms apart. Also the number of chargers in use on the App is totally bogus here. Some always say 4 of 6 available but when you arrive there is nobody there.

    What if my credit card is maxed out or doesn't work for some other reason, can I pay cash when recharging my Tesla? Can I put money on my Tesla account through some other means such as at a Bank or Albertson's grocery store? What if something goes wrong at the charging station, is there a re-charging station attendant who can help me get re-charged? Does Tesla pay for a tow truck to a Tesla dealer like the gasoline fueled automobile companies (Ford, Chevrolet, etc. )?

  • @lemongavine
    @lemongavine 5 лет назад

    @2:27, why would you not leave with 100% if you are planning on stopping at a supercharger on your trip? It makes no sense to purposely leave with less. If your goal at the supercharger is to get to 80%, it’ll always be faster getting there if you arrive at a higher state of charge, even though the charge rate is faster when you arrive with lower charge level. Maybe I’m misunderstanding what you meant. Please explain.

    • @MrGregHiller
      @MrGregHiller 5 лет назад +1

      Answer: - Because it's better for your battery (to not charge above 80%).

    • @lemongavine
      @lemongavine 5 лет назад

      Greg Hiller but it’s perfectly okay to charge to 100% as long as you’re going to drive it right after it gets there. 100% is only bad if left sitting there for long periods of time, especially at high temperatures.

    • @sjokomelk
      @sjokomelk 5 лет назад

      It might sound counter productive, but gaining let's say 50 miles of range takes longer time when the battery is at 70% than when it is at 30%. So you would spend less time charging if you arrive at the charger with low state of charge. Look at Bjørn Nyland/TeslaBjørn on his road trips. He has mastered this technique to get where he needs to be as quickly as possible.

    • @lemongavine
      @lemongavine 5 лет назад

      sjokomelk I completely understand that, but if you arrive at the supercharger with 70% instead of 30%, you’ll have a very large head start. By the time the 30% car gets to 70%, you’ll be at 90%. I mean, I wouldn’t suggest stopping at a supercharger when you already have 70%, but in the video, he’s talking about leaving from home so it’s always fastest to start a trip with the most charge you can.

  • @rotorblade9508
    @rotorblade9508 5 лет назад

    Tesla can actually update the map software to give you the option to select the state of charge limit for each station or apply the limit to all, like 80%.

      @michaeldombrowski9901 5 лет назад

      Tesla does take into account elevation changes; however, if you are towing or have a lot of cargo it might not calculate correctly. It also assumes that you are driving the speed limit. If you drive faster or slower, the initial estimate will not be correct; however, this can be monitored on the 'Trip' tab.

    This is just too much work to get to a destination. I like the idea of electric cars, but we need much faster charging and it has to be available pretty much anywhere. I have friends that take 5 extra hours to do the same trip as us, because they have to find places to charge and usually there are cars already taking all the super chargers so they have to wait their turn. It's one of the reasons the cyber truck won't do well for work. Time is money, can't be waiting to get charged up to go to the next job site.

    What they forgot to mention in this video is if you are plugged into a supercharger that is on a shared system it will prioritize the power to whoever plugs in 1st with the exception of a 10 second leeway so if you Pull in and only 1A and 1B are available in than another card backs and next to you at the same time if you get out and plug in 1st and then 15 seconds later the other driver gets out and plugs in even if your at 50% state of charge and they are at 10% state of charge you will get prioritized on the faster charging or for example you're both driving a model S with a 90 kW pack and they are both the same year and they are both down to 10% the core of that plugs in 1st will get priority on charging 1st over the car that plugs in 2nd because you were there slightly sooner than the other car and Tesla's goal with this is to get you out 1st so just because the core next to you may have a lower state of charge does not mean that your chargeray is going to be diminished in fact once the car next to you is done charging if you pull in in that car has been there for a few minutes or once they unplug and leave even if there is another car waiting in line to charge you will get the faster charging speeds at that point even if the other vehicle just unplug for a few seconds and then plugs back in you get prioritized on the faster charging speeds at that point I don't own a Tesla but I have seen it at superchargers where one card goes in and backs and to a supercharger on get mode and then another car pulls in 2 minutes later to charge on the shared stall with that car and it takes over a 15 minutes before the other car gets anything over 20 kW hours of charging speed because the card that was in gimp mode was a 100 kW car and definitely needed charge.

    Kind of agree, but not totally. I will more often than not coordinate my charging stops with plans to stop for meals, potty breaks, and overnight stays. In many cases, I'm not concerned that charging time is on the longer side. I will often run my battery down to 15% before stopping for a meal and then charging all the way to 95% before continuing on my trip. I rarely find myself waiting for a charge. In fact, I often have to interrupt a meal to unplug my car if occupancy is 50% or more to avoid idle charges. As charging speeds increase even further with V3 Superchargers, the likelihood of actually waiting at the car to finish charging increases.

They also use have an interactive chart that showed the power consumption based on speed and temp. The amount of power loss with lower temps are amazing.
