During the flashbacks with Iroh, they are playing the song, Leaves from the Vines. The same song the original Iroh (Mako) sings in the animated series.
In the original series, King Bumi trapped Katara and Sokka in the rock candy. Also, Aang, Katara, and Sokka would often go on their adventures together, while in this live action adaptation, they are constantly separated. I much prefer them being together and forming those bonds as characters
Only one other person noticed that Holden says Bac Sing Se?? They were in Omashu, Holden. Not Ba Sing Se. There is a substantial difference. Bumi is not the Earth King, just the King of Omashu.
There's a lot of people, mostly on twitter, that seem to be intentionally feeding the flames of negativity for the sake of engagement. People who very clearly HAVEN'T watched it and yet act like they have. I've seen people admit that they maybe watched one episode and then decided the rest of the show sucks and it's a shame. There are criticisms of it that I have but having watched through it fully twice and watched numerous other "highlights" of other reactors watching it I love this version. It compliments the original VERY well and has brought renewed interest in this amazing world and I couldn't ask for anything more than that. It's honestly an 8/10 show for me. I would also like to say that the funeral scene ALONE made this a worth adaptation and showed that whatever critiques people may have in this show, it tells me the creators heart is in the right place and they CLEARLY love the original and understand the lore. And I think anyone saying different is just plan wrong.
i watched the whole thing and its a solid 5/10 for me. some good things but mostly bummed with all the changes especially small ones that didnt need to be changed
I honestly appreciate that they merged the stories like the secret tunnel , jet , sai and iroh into one episode, its really impressive. Zuko still remains my favorite character
I don't mind them merging some stories but Secret Tunnel was a season 2 story that is extremely important for Ang and Katara's relationship and it makes no sense to move it to season 1.
@@mightheal I understand you having that initial thought, but you are worried about something that hasn't happened yet, you don't know if they will effectively develop Aang and Kataras relationships in the second season. They can very well adapt the relationship growth that they had in some other way. I'm not saying it will be great either, I'm just saying we don't know... Also they might choose to develop their relationship in some other way and that might be fine for the story they are telling.
@@mighthealto be fair Aang and Katara’s relationship was one of the weakest and most drawn out aspects of the original, not to mention there is a noticeable age gap between the actors. They’ll probably wait until both actors are older before they set up a romance if they go in that direction at all.
@@Andrew-Bastin I see you're one of those people who want things done quickly. For there ages their relationship is really the most realistic aspect of the original. As for the actors they're only 3 years apart that is not a big difference.
Haters are going to hate. We saw a similar reaction to Korra. Korra was not as good as ATLA. But, it was by no means bad. I think people were expecting a live action shot for shot series. Some say because the episodes are almost an hour and there are eight of them they could've left almost everything in. But, there were scenes in the cartoon that would have been longer if they had more time. They exlounded on some of the interactions in yhe live action, and they combined some things. Overall, it was a good adaptation. Not a great one. But, definitely good enough to clear up some of the writing and do the rest of the series. I'm here for it.
Not that many says it needed to be shot for shot but you cant deny the substantial changes they made there bud. Its bad. I have a big list about it thats essentially the core elements of why the show failing at the rating compared to an anime thats been pretty notorious for gate keeping and toxicity but has better live action ratings (One Piece)
Holden… the cabbages jokes is a running gag from the animation that the fanbase loves idk how you guys forgot about it 🤣🤣🤣 ( mentioned it in a comment in episode3 that I’m sure you guys don’t remember probably since you only watched the series once as far as I’m aware)
bumi makes more sense here to have bitterness and jaded heart of someone who has suffered/fought a 100 year war. And to now be of the ruling class and caretaker of a city and everyone in it. That's 100 years of the hard choices. This or that. Also, Not only that but also your best friend has responsibilities and didnt come through, with the mindset of he may have been able to stop it (from a certain POV, we know he would've died but as this show points out the avatar master of all four elements and that's the label they just believe aang can bend all four, even zuku's he ran he's suppose to be the greatest warrior shows perspective) Then iroh's storyline, with the one earthbender, wastes the water, tells the story of his brother sharing food, and he literally throws away an apple that he took a single bite of. It all ties in it all clicks, pieces fall into place. Take it further back epi. 2 kyoshi said you put this island in danger, the village is in trouble and aangs 1st words "my friends" not the people. back to bumi huge responsibility and impossible decision. Ex. Think of civil war Steve's argument what if the avengers needed to be somewhere and they couldn't be xyz wouldn't allow/let them. What if you went to xyz, and you really needed to be at abc instead. Even the path convo with the rock candy, if aang does the ima save everyone route, say every single village from omashu, he'll take to much time and by doing so he could just find a village decimated or missed it completely bc he took time elsewhere. it's tough
Those people were expecting a 1 for 1 translation which almost never works. They also cite a blog one of the creators wrote about the differences in direction. A blog he has since retracted and removed after he attended the premiere and liked it. I've watched this a couple times already and I really enjoyed it.
I disagree with those people who think that this isn’t good. I think by the finale it showed itself a fantastic series. People need to stop comparing it to the animated series. It’s not that. It’s a new iteration and you can’t think well where is that scene, where is that line of dialogue - it’s not enjoyable to do that. As a fantasy series it’s wonderful.
I don't want to get too into the weeds on themes and the like but I really like how each person Aang meets seems to be trying to teach him similar things. That a leader in a time of war has to be hard, be strong, be an implacable force that the world can rely on, and that he must stand alone. Meanwhile the actual story is teaching him that he needs to rely on his friends and the people around him to succeed, that more war cannot end war, that this is a time for the avatar to heal people rather than destroy them.
I hope yall realize the song playing at Iro's son funeral was "leaves from the vine!" Which was the last thing we heard from the og voice actor in the animated series!
I’m pretty sure that there ARE things that are valid criticisms, however, it’s easier to complain about something on the internet than say it was good. The internet is a negative echo chamber, and I don’t think it anyone’s fault. If you like something you just go on your way and enjoy it, if you don’t like something you feel the need to share on the internet. For the record, I’ve been watching a whole bunch of reactions and almost all of them enjoy the show quite a bit
My issue with combining all these episode is that they take away important character arcs for each character: Northern Air Temple was emotional for Aang to see his home destroyed, secret tunnels was for Aang and Katara. Jet was to show how Sokka Instinct may be wrong but can also save lives. They didn’t explain why he was working with the fire nation and How did Aang know it was Jet behind the bombing anyway?
Everyone think it's an remake when it's not an remake it's an adaptation meaning same plot different writing which will result in different structure, i bet everyone who's hating also hate on korra they have no desire to go into avatar related content with an open mind they immediately start to hate because it's not an carbon copy of the og this adaptation is good in its own way if i want to watch the og i go watch the og.
A lot of people have to understand that ATLA (the cartoon) was made for children, it HAS to be really goofy and not so serious all the time. I appreciate the tone of the live action because realistically people will have animosity toward Aang for being gone for so long. I’m glad to be shown that in this adaptation it makes it real. These are humans not cartoons
I thought Bumi was too angry and hateful towards Aang in this episode, yes, he is goofy and odd in both shows, but he is kinder in the animated series (even when he is testing Aang, he may seem a little harsh, but he is still quite nice towards him). Also, those crystals are Rock candy, and they were in the original series too, but there it was used to imprison Soka and Katara, not Aang (and Aang thought they were in danger, not knowing they were being trapped by candy and were actually safe). And I'm not that fond of how the giant badger moles are said to see in this episode because, if I recall, they can see by, either seeing or smelling, emotions. And I get what they are trying to do, but Toph learned to see the same way they do, and she sees by feeling the vibrations in the earth (a skill she taught Aang and her daughters). And that might mess things up in the lore of the show, but I don't know.
but they did though. there was a lot of season 1 that had bits to foreshadow for whats to come but they left those out of this remake. and since they plan on making more at least thats whats been said and yet they left out a lot of the plot starters for the rest of the series and now they have to somehow make it make sense later. There was a reason that the original series was 20 eps season 1 not 8
@@diegopansini3152 In the original series there was a lot of plots of different characters in season 1. And only some of those were finished but the rest were still open until later seasons. But in the remake they cut out a lot of those side plots for whatever reason even though they become crucial for story telling and character development later on.
@@Kyrid Like Haru and Jeong Jeong? I don’t mind that these kind of characters got cut. They can still do the “I’m afraid to hurt the ones I love” thing with Aang without Jeong Jeong, for example. In fact, they kind already set it up since he’s afraid of his power
yea but the way they did is such elementary story telling by literally saying it out loud. Its just shameful to remake something that was a "kids show" and have a worse story arc. The show was already made, all they needed to do was copy and paste @@diegopansini3152
As a Star Wars fan I'm sure you'll understand. With certain fans revisiting their favorite world will never be as good as the first time they saw it. And if it's not as good, none of it's good. You'll find the same type of criticisms with Korra. But don't let that discourage you from giving that (and this) a chance when you can easily find things to enjoy here.
Has anyone noticed the massive amounts of guilt and blame being heaped upon Aang by pretty much EVERYONE he meets? That only really happened once in the cartoon by the fisherman in “The Storm”. Is that one of the reasons people are getting turned off by the live-action adaptation? I would watch the show (for the first time, just over a year ago) and wonder why everyone is so cool with his disappearance a hundred years ago. Was that because it was intended to be a show for kids? And since the live-action is aimed at everyone they decided to make things more true to real life? Where everyone blames everyone else for what’s happening in the world simply because they have an opinion that differs from your own?
So Episode 3 was decent. I liked how they merged some of the various stories together. I think it was done well enough as much as it could be. But then we get to Episode 4 and for me this was hands down the WORST to MIXED Episode of the show. They made Bumi who was a hopeful, fun, quirky, insane character into a depressed, angry, crazy unlikable dick. The Jet storyline just...Ends. No real resolution there. What was stopping them from attacking again? Adapting the Cave of Two Loves and making it Katara and Sokka focused was such a a big mis-step in storytelling as was ruining the oriignal concept of the Cave from the source material and giving it that lovey dovey bullshit cliche. I didn't like that at all or anything to do with Aang and Bumi. The only saving grace was everything to do with Iroh and Zuko which was the BEST part of the Episode. Hearing that old remixed version of Iroh's Song from the cartoon being played in the background got the tears rolling. Honestly, its amazing how damn well they did Zuko/Iroh in this show as they are the best and my favourite part of the original story, so they got that right 100%.
I'm not a fan of how they did Bumi in this version. The show in general isn't that bad. A bit rushed, but I get that they need to merge episodes for time. But here, with Bumi, he's just an asshole. In the original show Bumi was testing Aang to see if he's ready to face Ozai. He's testing him to see if he can think outside the box, and change his "airbender mindset" to see if he's even ready to learn the other bending styles. Here, he's just a dick. He's angry and upset that his friend left the world in shambles, and that he didn't fight off an entire fire nation army as a 10 year old with no knowledge of the other bending arts. Bumi was done dirty here, and I'm not impressed.
Bumi being bitter made perfect sense to me. Imagine this: After all we have seen happen in Omashu, the city left open to spies and bombings. Then out of nowhere, Bumi plays silly games with Aang to teach him a lesson. It would take away from the tone of the show. It’s not like they changed Bumi drastically, he’s still a mad genius
Also Bumi literally was raised up in war. He was aangs age give or take which direction. 100 years of fighting. The rest of the world has been fighting and suffering and you aang thee avatar just took a little nap. You'd be a bitter senile old man. His monologue went along with Iroh's story line, just look how that one soldier wasted the apple. Who gets the scraps/leftovers. Do you save this town or that town, back to episode 2 village is in danger, aangs 1st worlds were my friends not the oh no the island And irohs line of we dont like what we turn into.
Hey Holden & Jen, the Pianist story with the Nazi, at the end, reminded me of the Sound of Music with Julie Andrews & Christopher Plumber... Have you guys seen this movie... its a musical, but a good watch from like 1965.
I had seen episodes of the anime/cartoon but not all of it. So I watched this first and really enjoyed it. I then watched the anime/cartoon and really enjoyed that. I can see why people wouldn't like the show, but i still like the live action and can understand why they can't copy and paste it to live action. Literally no live adaptation has 100% stuck to the "source material" because most times, it's just not possible (whether it be cost or just practically based or some other reasons). People just need to enjoy it for what it is. I do have problems with the show (some of the casting, acting and story being taken out) but i can still enjoy it for what it is, a good live action show of a beloved anime/cartoon.
EP4 is a weird one for me. I really didn’t like it at first but after a rewatch it’s now become one of my top 3 favorites. For me right now the order is 6, 2, 4, 1, 3, 7, 8, 5.
One of the things people like the most like about the series is that Fire Nation side of the series got more attention on it, mostly Zuko's, Iroh's, Ozai's and Zhao's for the most part.
The hate is definitely the minority. It's currently sitting at 75% audience approval on both Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. The minority is just really vocal. And since it's obviously not better than the animated show, no one is speaking loudly about how amazing it is.
I just finished the series and I plan on rewatching from the beginning. I'm a big fan of the animated series I watched it all multiple times I know what the word adaptation means and this is a retelling that makes a few changes but hits all the right important story beats that it needs to. I don't see why it does get so much hate. There really is a trend of people hating for not any real reason other than to be negative.
I think the live action movie left such a bad taste in everyone’s mouth that a lot of people went into this wanting or expecting to hate it. I enjoyed it very much.
I believe it's more than just "hating on it to hate." As a personal fan of ATLA animation, it's the undoing of a lot of deeper messaging both social and interpersonal that the animation masterfully crafted beyond generations. Anyone child can grow up with ATLA regardless of the time and find meaningful themes. Sure there's inconsistencies within the animation and the hope for OG Fan's was of a more cohesive story being told with creators vision not one with more plot holes and inconsistencies than the show trying to separate itself from the show but relying heavily on easter eggs from the show. Like with the Cabbage Man, people form the show enjoy the "edging" of him having his cabbages messed with but new viewers don't get the same build up of expectations for "my cabbages" and thus the pay off for that scene of him yell hits flat with new viewers. The ongoing joke was due to the "rule of Three" where he would say "My cabbages" as a C or b plotline lulls to offer levity. The show used him entirely for the OG Fans but it wasn't even satisfying with newer fans which can make them fell left out. The show itself has live action world building inconsistencies and like you said in this episode, some of the bending feel meh. You have great earth bending episode 1 and then last episode it was disconnected from that same standard. As you're watching, try viewing it from a new viewer and mark off things that you associate with the animation and ask yourself does it make sense? Like with Teo flying over Omashu, why couldn't Aang just land with Appa inside the city? why is Aang hiding from the earth benders when they're already actively fighting against fire bender? Things like that and powering down Katara and even killing her character writing wise is the issue. This show indirectly became more sexist and misogynist by writing out Sokka's sexism and making Katara a silly naive girl rather than the mother of the group with a strong backbone. Her getting jealous about Aang ability to quickly learn what she worked hard to learn is missing and her coming to rise even above him to become a master is empowering for women but here's it's like Aang doesn't even want to practice with Katara *hints of the trans debate there* but boys and girls should train together misogyny where they actually form a bond that way. There's plenty of valid critique that's not just hating on the show. It's not a bad show, it's alright but from the source material it's pretty bad just story wise and character building.
All that critique is subjective, I didn’t see any of that. The only thing I had an issue with was the acting at times. It had most of the major themes and messages from the original. I agree with how they toned down the goofiness cause that was not translatable to live action. If it was it just wouldn’t have worked and taken away from the believability. It has just enough goofiness and seriousness that the movie didn’t have. The movie was overly serious, trash acting all throughout and just blew through the whole narrative of the cartoon in 10 mins. In that way the series was great. I’d probably rate it a solid 7.5-8/10
@@invictafilms2690 Comparing it to the movie it's definitely going to be better by comparison. However, that's like trying to determine a relationship by the standards of being trafficked by mobsters. Anything resembling normalcy looks idealistic. The moral of Hei Bai is the idea of renewed hope through the after mass of destructive fire by the nurturing of the next generation. A direct parallel to the greater theme of Aang and Zuko's relationship the way the ash fertilizes the seeds, the heat creates storms that bring the water and betrayal of Sozin to Roku creates the friendship with Zuko and Aang. The premise is that friendship persist beyond lifetimes. They haven't hit those notes between Roku and Gyatsu, Roku and Sozin, and Aang with Gyatsu and Sozin/Roku's grandson Zuko. Instead, they made it about Ko accidentally taking Aang's friends since he accidentally brought them to the spirit world some how and only accidentally stumbled upon them due to Hei Bai forcing them off the road into the mist. That he did this accidentally to get back his most sacred idol of Ko's mother and gave back everyone he took in the process. None of it was intentional or paralleling the intentional denial of Aang's duty and destiny which created the imbalance which also bled into the spirit world like the original series had set up. It's not that, I'm reading too much into it but that not everyone discovered all the layers of the genius that is ATLA. They only took it a surface value and thus many lessons, themes and realizations are yet to be discovered from the animation that once discovered, the live action becomes less evolved, thought out and insightful. There's nuances to the story beyond "boy savior" and for those who realized the layers are also realizing the live action is without any of that. It's not even nuance with it's surface layers but overly espousing what we see in front of us. Not only that but counter productive to it's own messaging by unironically embracing the contrary through meta action within the writing. Better VFX isn't enough for everyone especially people who notice the nuance points. When you have inconsistencies in the story or logic like Teo being able to fly in and out the city but Aang and Appa don't but Aang later does on this glider that could have avoided the whole sneaking in to Omashu or even having to sneak in anyway when they can't stop or care about people flying in? You know like in world logic. Or that the Fire Nation didn't recognize Azula because her hair was up like a racist thinking "all Asians look alike" disguise that fooled people into a trap. If they were going to introduce Mai and Tai Lee, why not use one of them and show how Azula manipulates her friends and puts them in danger. Maybe there's people who live deeper and aware in society to notice these things and point them out since not everyone can describe why something is great from something good to typical? If you want to look at it comparatively, It's better than the movie but most things are even other shows that flopped. If you want to look at it as it's own story, it lacks depth, treats the audience like childish idiots, inconsistent acting, writing and VFX. Sure, you can remain ignorant of anything others might have to say that's valid criticism as biases against or for but to dismiss all complaints valid or not out of hope it'll fix itself is both naive and counter to the very messaging of the themes the show is trying to instill. That's the irony on the meta level that people unironically perpetuate. It's like people against dictatorship unironically giving power to a dictator hoping to prevent it so they ensure it.
For itself: The live action-adaption is a good show. I try not to compare it to the animated series. Because that would be unfair: The animated series was breath taking to me. I can‘t expect the same from the Netflix-adaption going into it. The chances of being positively surprised therefore would be low. I‘m trying to kep my expectations at zero, so I can be more positively surprised. For me it works. (By the way: Most of the changes in the adaption made sense to me.)
I think alot of people go into adaptions with unreasonable expectations or go into it expecting to hate it. Similar to Holdens comments about the kids acting will probably be bad. He went in expecting them to not be good, so it's probably only the exceptional ones he's going to not be tearing apart. Go into it as it's own thing and enjoy it for what it is.
I wouldn't say it's good. It's fine but the things they changed made the show worse. It's a solid 5/10, nothing terrible but nothing that great either. Just a fine, solid show
Some of the people hating on the show didn’t want to give it a chance. But there are a lot of valid criticisms about some of the changes to the story, the overabundance of exposition and some of the acting. I like the show overall though
I think they're skipping the storm episode and using the storybeats from that in this episode. Bumi is a lot like the bitter old fisherman with how angry he is at Aang, just with some Bumi jokes in between. And then at the end we get Zuko seeing Aang fly over and choosing not to go after him which is also straight from the storm episode
my biggest issue with the show is while most of the characters look like their animated counterparts and alot of the action is recreated pretty closely from the original, there's virtually none of the heart and spirit of the original, Katara especially. iroh and zuko are def the highlight of the show the Lu Ten funeral scene was a wonderful addition
To be honest I don't know why all the hate for the live action show. Acting is a bit messy but overall me and my friends really like this rendition, and I was afraid they would cancel the series because all of the hate it's getting from the ''real'' fans. I have watched both ATLA and LoK at least 3 times each and I don't have any complaints about the live action show.
I'm definitely at the point where I'm enjoying the show for what it is more than I am lamenting what it could have been. I think some of the choices they made as part of the adaptation process were good choices, and the elements where the show fails the most is in some of the performances, which are contrasted by incredible performances. I was so curious who played Bumi, turns out it was an actor I remember from Pitch Perfect, guy absolutely nailed the role.
Hey guys! I know y’all love this franchise so much, so y’all should definitely react to Legends of Korra! It expands on the lore from the original series and a little more serious in tone! Keep up the good work!
To be honest even if this show was a masterpiece there were going to be a number of ATLA fan hating it for simply existing, the fact that it does have it’s flaws just gives them more ammo. Overall this is a solid adaptation/interpretation of Book One and the changes made make sense when converting a mostly episodic story to a serialised one as well as taking into account the limitations live-action would have compared to animation. Now there’s the matter of tune, and that mostly comes down to preference but I always found the overly comedic turn of the original Book One to be very distracting especially with the dark subject matter and the ever present threat of the Fire Lord, the serious and comedic element weren’t really balanced out until Book Two. For the Netflix series the darker tune works and is nicely balanced out by the comedic moments throughout, I while I understand why some would miss the levity of the original a lot of those jokes and gags simply wouldn’t translate well into live action. Overall the Netflix series is off to a good start and I look forward to the rest of the series.
On one hand I enjoyed the more drawn out stories of the anime, but I do need to give the live action team a round of applause for the adaptation. It's a little different but it works so well
There's a level of unhealthy fanaticism with the original series that, unfortunately, is bringing the negative comments. I understand, I'm a huge fan of the original series and think it's one of the best TV series ever produced. With that said, I've approached this as a difference in story telling amongst different groups of people that have different perspectives. Almost like religion, I'm NOT equating a cartoon series to any religion, before anyone start throwing a fit, it's an example that the same story, can be told in different ways through the perspective of different groups of people. Overall, this adaptation has been great. They've done their best to encapsulate the original characters, but also show possible alternatives. Appreciate your honest reviews. It does get much better. ❤
I enjoyed it. I think its a 7/10. Whats funny is all the hardcore avatar channels i watch all agree its good, by no means is it amazing but its a solid 7.
everyone is being a bandwagon and just going off of what other people say. I, myself, enjoyed this show start to finish. I understand the acting is tough but they’re kids, the casting is still perfect and the dedication of the actors and the people behind the camera is very much appreciated.
this is the first series where didn't check reviews and it was a blessing. i really liked the show, yes the acting is flat sometimes but I think because they want to get things done in a certain timespan there is not much time for development. But I will continue l not looking at reviews before watching shows anymore. Cheers from Aruba!
Unless I'm completely off, I believe those are the same hippies from the Serpent's Pass episode of the cartoon. The one that also had the pregnant woman give birth in the cave (well make-shift but that Toph erected).
siblings in the cave of lovers lol. this is probably the weakest episode of the live action. But still this show is 100x better than the live action movie and this show has so much potential in the future. episode 6 is my favorite!
Dude, I like you (fellow Christian) but you really didn't mention the biggest problems that fans have with this show, you just put all the criticism in one bag and said that it's popular to hate things while the criticism is way more complex. 1. The dialogues are mostly expositions, characters only talk about how they feel or how they are. For example, we had one (literally one for the whole show) scene where Aang is goofing around on an air ball, and Katara was standing with Sokka were standing aside, and she was narrating about how funny, joyful and kind Aang is, that he's just a kid. There's multiple scenes like that where we are told stuff instead of showing it. Try to count how many times Aang said that he is afraid of his powers, that he don't want to be avatar or that he have to be avatar and bring balance to the force (hehe), it really is just bad writing, repeating the same information multiple times instead of showing characters being themselves. Also, they strip the characters from all their complex traits, Katara was vengeful in the original, because she hates injustice and wanted revenge for all the pain she and other experienced, but she was also kind and warm, he basically replaced mother for Sokka and Aang, she was also charismatic, energetic and strong. In the NATLA Katara is one note character, she act and speak like that parody of Katara from Ember Island, talking only about hope. Katara in the original show was also jealous of Aang's talent that why she worked so hard, everything goes easy for her version in the netflix show. The actress is too soft, even when she's trying to be more angry, she seems like introvert trying to be extravert. Aang is no more Aang, in the original he was a kid who was trying to escape his destiny by having fun every time he could, but in the show we see him instead talking about how much he don't want to be avatar and that he's scared, Sokka is also pretty stiff, he's supposed to be this kid with big responsibility and ambition, but he's not there yet to so he tries to cover his insecurities with joking around, all these elements are gone in the show. The pacing, most jokes don't land, because there's no rythme, everything is cut fast, no space for something to breathe. There's a lot more... But these are the biggest problems. PS. If this comments sound aggressive, it's not my intention, it's just passionate criticism. :P
I think the people that really complained about this show are the same people that want a live action clone wars show. For whatever reason, they want a shot for shot remake of a show thats already been done. They dont care about cost of the show and think it shouldn't be done if it's not a carbon copy of the original. The cost would be absurd too. Bumi being bitter makes sense.... he's the leader of a city thats been under siege for a hundred years ffs. he's still a weirdo. Some things just wont work in a live action, more grown up show. Stopping to make terrible jokes in the middle of a fight scene just works in animation, not so much in live action when you are in a serious moment.
But then if they did a shot for shot remake, those same people would complain that its exactly the same as the cartoon and there's no point in remaking it in live action if it's the exact same. You can't win with those ones.
I've watched through three times already. While I will always love the animated version better (nostalgia mostly), this is the best adaptation of animation to live action I've seen.
I'd say a lot of vocal people don't like it - Netflix says their stats show it is a success - that's based on actual views and how many viewers watch the whole series, etc. As of 3 days ago it was ranked in the top 10 Netflix shows in 92 countries - it's got 21.2 million views for the series. Just saying.
I have finished the Netflix adaptation, and I don't like it because it waters down Katara's character, the show decides to do a lot of exposition dumbs of character traits rather than showing them, they made some fights the same but those fights are worse because the motivation for those fights weaker. I am more annoyed about the Exposition heavy dialogue and Katara's butchering, What they did to Katara is so bad that is not Katara, I never in my life thought I'd ever be fighting for Katara but this show has made me realize that I am a katara fan, She's so meek, so emotionless, and funny enough I don't think it's the actress
I think the general consensus is that the show doesn't capture the humor and childlike wonder of the original, which I agree with. Many, probably including the creators who left the Netflix project, think that's the point, the essence of Avatar. I loved the original, but my take is that a scene for scene remake in live action would have sucked. There are some elements to a cartoon, especially anime-styled with exaggerated expressions and effects, that just would not translate to live action. Too many, for a lack of a better word, "cartoony" aspects that only work in a cartoon. So at least a partial tone shift is necessary. I can accept the live action as a different product than the animated series, and while I still give the edge to the OG, I still enjoy this show and can appreciate the creative choices behind them. Didn't like Bumi's portrayal, though.
the animated show is one of my all time favourite shows and I watch it 2-3 times a year, that said... It's the internet, generally the loudest voices are those who complain/hate on things because internet. Now there are definitely things I think could have been done better but overall I enjoyed the live action and will rewatch it in time eventually, I do vastly prefer the animated show but this adaption isn't that bad as far as LA adaptions go, definitely not up there with those rare few amazing ones but it holds its own and is a good show overall. My biggest gripe is like you some of the child acting is a bit off putting at times
I wouldn’t say that I hate this show I’m just more so disappointed I would agree that I don’t think they understand the characters very well but I do think it does do some intriguing stuff especially with Zuko later on but it just overall pales in comparison to the animated Aang he’s a goofball kid who learns through his own actions that actions have consequences in this show he’s just constantly told what he has to do and if he deviates at all then he’s a bad avatar he’s just not given any room to grow in this show
In all honesty, I HOPE they're saving some of the more epic Earthbending for Earth Rumble 6 and Toph. Wait.....was it Earth Rumble 6?? lol. I can't remember. Still, you know what I mean right?? The Earthbending has been infinitely better than Shyamalan's by miles. I hope they up the ante when they intro Toph.
It is much better but I would say it's still milliseconds to slow because it still feels like they're doing a dance before the stones move and Katara's water bending for some of her moves is to slow as well.
The big thing for me that I can't get over is that the writing is just bad imo. A lot of exposition and tell don't show which makes it hard for the actors to be good. I don't mind that they change story parts around and change things up, like aang being more serious, but then show it. Make him try and learn waterbending as he should. I don't know. I wanted to love it to be able to show people i love this story, characters and world i love. And sure there are glimpses of greatness, and good ideas and stories that are actually better in Natla the OG, like what youll see in episode 6. But it's hard not to feel dissaponted.
I don't understand when he says that they're really leaning into that joke about the cabbages didn't the animation do the same thing? Like what are you talking about
Personally I enjoyed the show, but I think it cut the first season down too much and as a result lost a lot of stuff that made the cartoon so good. In particular, the later episodes were the worst for this splicing together lots of different storylines into single episodes to fit them all in an 8-episode season. So many characters have been fundamentally changed in the live action version that it is basically a different show, rather than a remake, which is fine, but you have to view it that way.
I really like this show. It has its flaws and it isn’t as good as the original but it’s still good. People are just haters. Some are even so extreme as to say the Movie is better which is just absurd.
I didn’t like the show mainly because the dialogue was hot diarrhea and some of the changes didn’t make sense or the character development was thrown out the window. That could be one of the reasons why the original creators dipped out. I really liked sokka, iroh, and zuko in the show but I hope in season 2 they greatly improve the dialogue and writing.
During the flashbacks with Iroh, they are playing the song, Leaves from the Vines. The same song the original Iroh (Mako) sings in the animated series.
One thing I always disliked about ATLA was we never got an Ozai/iroh interaction. That’s something this version does and I love it.
In the original series, King Bumi trapped Katara and Sokka in the rock candy. Also, Aang, Katara, and Sokka would often go on their adventures together, while in this live action adaptation, they are constantly separated. I much prefer them being together and forming those bonds as characters
Same. All their bonding happens offscreen.
Only one other person noticed that Holden says Bac Sing Se?? They were in Omashu, Holden. Not Ba Sing Se. There is a substantial difference. Bumi is not the Earth King, just the King of Omashu.
it’s not that big of a deal, man
@@timmlyy Didn't ay it was. Pointing out things doesn't MAKE them a big deal; it's just pointing things out.
I noticed it
There's a lot of people, mostly on twitter, that seem to be intentionally feeding the flames of negativity for the sake of engagement.
I think you need to realize a lot of people genuinely don’t like the show.
i watched the whole thing and its a solid 5/10 for me. some good things but mostly bummed with all the changes especially small ones that didnt need to be changed

Zuko and Iroh carry this show
I honestly appreciate that they merged the stories like the secret tunnel , jet , sai and iroh into one episode, its really impressive. Zuko still remains my favorite character
I thought they did it very well, it was generally well executed

Also,
Not only that but also your best friend has responsibilities and didnt come through, with the mindset of he may have been able to stop it (from a certain POV, we know he would've died but as this show points out the avatar master of all four elements and that's the label they just believe aang can bend all four, even zuku's he ran he's suppose to be the greatest warrior shows perspective) Then iroh's storyline, with the one earthbender, wastes the water, tells the story of his brother sharing food, and he literally throws away an apple that he took a single bite of. Even the path convo with the rock candy, if aang does the ima save everyone route, say every single village from omashu, he'll take to much time and by doing so he could just find a village decimated or missed it completely bc he took time elsewhere. it's tough
No, it doesn't. He's a loony and is a top member of the White Lotus.
All talk and no show like that 19 year old brother of yours”💀💀💀💀💀😂😂🤣🤣🤣Holden a savage😂😅😂
I loved how they combined the episodes! They didn’t leave out the important stuff from each episode
but they did though. there was a lot of season 1 that had bits to foreshadow for whats to come but they left those out of this remake. and since they plan on making more at least thats whats been said and yet they left out a lot of the plot starters for the rest of the series and now they have to somehow make it make sense later. There was a reason that the original series was 20 eps season 1 not 8
@@Kyrid I didn’t understand much of what you said
@@diegopansini3152 In the original series there was a lot of plots of different characters in season 1.
The show was already made, all they needed to do was copy and paste

Honestly, its amazing how damn well they did Zuko/Iroh in this show as they are the best and my favourite part of the original story, so they got that right 100%.
i love that you're watching these a lot, keep them coming
We love the series, and can't wait for season 2. Ignore all the hate, people today just love to hate shows. Enjoy what you enjoy.
It is getting so wild that there is a large group of people who now claim M. Night Shyamalan's Avatar was better.

It's interesting. I actually thought that the third episode was the worst of the season. Whereas 4 is in the top 3.
Jen with the "cold shoulder" comment needs to be addressed - that was great!
9:15 no, it's a Badger Mole.

And then at the end we get Zuko seeing Aang fly over and choosing not to go after him which is also straight from the storm episode
I think people wanted a 1:1 remake. While not a masterpiece, it is enjoyable and more grounded. I would like to see more of the hybrid animals.

Which series should i watch first the animated or live action?
I think most people would say the animated series first.
UH secret tunnels
...
wait
...
why are the siblings going in there ?
OH NO its star wars all over again
Iroh is played by the greay Canadian Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, i highly tecommend you watch his comedy show, Kim's Convenience!! So funny!
Bumi had the armpit hair in the animation btw so I’m glad they didn’t leave it out lol 😂
I enjoyed it, watched it through twice.
I like it. It's just popular to "hate" on things so i would take all that with a grain of salt. I have mostly seen positive reviews from people though
Holden was so proud of Jen's dad joke haha.
On one hand I enjoyed the more drawn out stories of the anime, but I do need to give the live action team a round of applause for the adaptation. It's a little different but it works so well
i really enjoy the series excited for season 2, ep. 4 was a good one! loved the iroh and zuko scenes
I absolutely love this show!
Shout out to "Secret Tunnel" the real ones know ✊🏽
I enjoyed it. I think its a 7/10. Whats funny is all the hardcore avatar channels i watch all agree its good, by no means is it amazing but its a solid 7.
I agree a 7 or 8 a free getting used to the changes( episode 5 is where I had to get used to some changes)
everyone is being a bandwagon and just going off of what other people say.
It’s a great show I hope for many more seasons
I love it and like it
siblings in the cave of lovers lol. this is probably the weakest episode of the live action. But still this show is 100x better than the live action movie and this show has so much potential in the future. episode 6 is my favorite!
Did you see episode 1, which I like but is definitely the weakest episode compared to every other episode
Family love is way more real than romantic love. The change is fine
Sokka x Katara forever!
ETA on Batch?
From what I’ve seen most fans of the show like the show but critics don’t
when you guys say "for the FIRST time" i assumed you didn't watch the animated series, but that's not the case 🥴🌀😵
The snow is mid, it has a few moments ( kyoshi and the fsce eater) were dope but overall its mid
I feel like the patreon names at the end scroll a little too fast
Haters will hate. But you have to wait until the last episode. It is best to not compare it to the cartoon.
But it's hard not to feel dissaponted.
dont get it twisted, Iroh was probably a pretty evil general
I don't understand when he says that they're really leaning into that joke about the cabbages didn't the animation do the same thing? Like what are you talking about
Personally I enjoyed the show, but I think it cut the first season down too much and as a result lost a lot of stuff that made the cartoon so good. In particular, the later episodes were the worst for this splicing together lots of different storylines into single episodes to fit them all in an 8-episode season. So many characters have been fundamentally changed in the live action version that it is basically a different show, rather than a remake, which is fine, but you have to view it that way.
You guys should watch Pacific rim
aint no way yall edited out the whole 80% of the episode lol
Now you can join your brother 😂😂
I really like this show. It has its flaws and it isn’t as good as the original but it’s still good. People are just haters.
Some are even so extreme as to say the Movie is better which is just absurd.
I can understand why the creators of the original show left the live action one now can’t wait for the movies they are making
Please give the Star Trek franchise a chance. 🖖🏻
I didn’t like the show mainly because the dialogue was hot diarrhea and some of the changes didn’t make sense or the character development was thrown out the window. That could be one of the reasons why the original creators dipped out. I really liked sokka, iroh, and zuko in the show but I hope in season 2 they greatly improve the dialogue and writing.
that’s omashu not ba sing se
