Yip Yip!
Kyoshi is widely known as the scariest avatar lol. She is very intimidating and puts justice above all else. Basically you know how Aang is a pacifist, well kyoshi really really isn't 😂
Kyoshi is indeed scary but Yangchen was definitely more terrifying
@@JaeMinJung. Good point. Both of them have incredible feats of power and skill. I hope we get more of the past avatars in books 2 and 3.
Different times need different types of heroes.
One of Kyoshi’s other titles is “Bendmaster Murder Mommy”. It’s canon, probably.
Where does this reputation come from?
Kyoshi did take control of Aang once, in the Avatar Day episode. It was when Aang was put on trial for her crimes, to settle whether she actually killed Chin the Conqueror or not.
She stood 10 toes down like “Yupp I did it and I’ll do it again too” 😂
And it resulted in unfried dough 😂
Yes but they basically gave both of Roku lines about the threat and avatar state to her
@@tmac731if you’ve seen the whole live action the. You know what my reply to this might be( refraining to not spoil for holden and Jen)
@@terogates1 the scene of Aang going to the fire nation had no tension. He got there easy and his conversation wasn’t really that impactful in my opinion. I did like how he was goofy
Kyoshi was always direct and strong, but in the show she was more composed and less emotional about it.
And Aang does change into Kyoshi in the show but she never fights anyone, she only speaks a few sentences before disappearing. Roku was the first to both possess and fight in Aang’s stead, but that was in Roku’s Avatar shrine so it appears that there is some truth to the shrine thing.
Not in the books.
@@gundamOPS right but in the books she was still going through character development. By the time we saw her in the show, all the book events had already come to pass and she lived her 200+ year life. She was much more composed and didn’t chastise Aang with emotional outbursts.
@@AndrewsiPhoneablefacts
The way aang speaks is how the actor speaks I’ve seen a couple interviews with him in it
In general, the former avatars possessing Aang isn‘t a lore breaker. In the animated show it happened twice:
- In season 1 when Roku possessed Aang after telling him about the comet.
- In season 2 Kyoshi possessed Aang to testify how chin the conqueror actually died.
But Kyoshi never possessed Aang during season 1. That‘s new in the Netflix-show.
Fun fact: The actress playing the mom/grandmother is from Karate Kid 2, she plays his girlfriend when he went to Japan with Mr Miyogi.
Thought she looked familiar, she was in Kobra Kai a season or two ago too as the same character from Karate Kid
@@trashsplashtucker yup she was. She was also in the TV show Monarch Legacy of Monsters.
In the animated show Aang had his quirks too. I honestly like the choice of the actor. The fact that he speaks a bit faster and doesn't finish all the words all the time is not bad acting, in my opinion. He an airbender, the words bend themselves out from his mouth in the air
Imo that's just a stupid reason to dismiss bad acting. I don't think anyone is blaming Gordon for his acting, it's to be expected from a young child actor in their first real role. It's okay to admit that his acting isn't the best at times.
I agree. I don’t think it’s that bad. I admit there are a few lines that didn’t have the right feeling behind it, but kids do usually talk really fast or really slow. My daughter talks a mile a minute 😂
@@nikkijade8217 Yeah and it isn't bad enough to ruin the show, not even close. I have no doubt that next season (assuming it's renewed which imo it should be) all of their acting will get a lot better. We've seen this with other projects like Harry Potter.
@@rebel8215 true the actors definitely got better with age. I agree.
Agree because I saw holdem cringing on Aang's actor acting
The rule that "past avatars can't possess the current one outside of shrines" is never mentioned in the original show.... however, looking back, the possessions ONLY ever happened in shrines! Although, Kyoshis was more of an anti-shrine in the animation, it was still in remberance of her actions. So maybe it was a thing in the creator's minds then too, just never directly mentioned.
in the animated show, we see roku possess aang when they go to crescent island in the firenation during the winter solstice to speak with roku, when the firebenders open the chamber where rokus shrine is, we see roku bend rather than aang. so im guessing thats why they changed it up in the live action to be kyoshi rather than roku
Idk how to feel about that because they combined S1E4(Kyoshi island) S1E7(winter solstice) and S2E1(Avatar State)
In the animated show, it was Avatar Roku who possessed Aang in the first season then it was Avatar Kyoshi in the second season
Incase if you haven’t noticed, Zhao is played by Ken Leung who played Quill in X-Men Last Stand
Omg that's where I'm recognising him from!!! I know he was in Lost but I knew he was in a superhero movie I just couldn't remember what. Thanks lol
@@ConorWood115 from what I’m seeing, he only auditioned cause he thought it was for James Cameron’s Avatar
10 seconds of seeing him on screen is more compelling than the rest of the show combined, lol.
Idk how to feel about this. In the cartoon, Avatar Roku was the first one to possess Aang when he told him about the comet(changed to be the North Pole attack) he also told Aang about the avatar stage but it’s now Kyoshi
Well yeah, Zhao WAS confused. Hence why he LOOKS stunned and says "Impossible!" when he sees Kyoshi. Or was it Zuko who said "impossible!"?? One of them said it. lol. It could have been Zuko and that WOULD make sense since he's been studying Avatars for three years and likely KNOWS exactly what each one looks like going as far back as Yangchen.
This is my favorite episode of the season (-_^ ) Kyoshi showing up to defend her island was a tremendous change.
Just got off work with some food and to find out there’s a Holden and Jen Avatar reaction? Love it 👏🏽
18:14 Yeah, she was gentler with Aang in the cartoon. But Kyoshi is pretty well known for being the scariest, most ruthless Avatar, dedicated to bringing justice no matter the cost. So she definitely would be furious about Roku’s decision to spare Sozin’s life and bringing about the 100 year war😅
What did Spain have to do with it?😂
@@ArmoredMexican stupid autocorrect 😂 fixed it
Roku possessed him at the Fire Nation Shrine (later in book 2 if i remember right) and there was his Trial when he weared her cloths and accessory's and makeup, and she possessed him for brief moment, to testify that she killed Chin the Conqueror.
@user-sz6yx5he7m Roku spoke to and possessed Aang during book 1, when he was trying to save sokka and the town villagers from hei bai (Winter Solstice episode)
NOT THE SIDE SHADE: "this has been passed down in our family for generations" Jenn: " Looks pretty new" HAHAHAHAHA
The keep possessing aang line was so good because we all know if kyoshi could just deal with this problem herself she would have 😭
zuko was such a perfect casting choise, he did great!
Its good seeing Tamlyn Tomita acting more. After her role in Karate Kid 2 ( Kumiko ) and then Cobra Kai and Monarch Legacy of Monsters .
"In my view, the only outsiders on this island, is you."
Meanwhile Sokka, 3 feet away in plain view and clearly not from this island:
"Yeah outsiders! Get off our island!"
I'm with you Holden, my only issue with Kyoshi is that she wasn't collected. Like I get she is ruthless but in the show she was collected while telling Aang what he's gotta do instead she was like angry and yelling at him (like you said in the show seemed more like she was offering advice and here she was scolding Aang ). The rest was really good, good to see some Kyoshi action.
Sokka joins in with the training in the animation too. In the original show sometimes the past avatars do possess Aang, not here but two different times in the animation. 😊
Yeah, but only after Suki beats the sexism out of him. Ultimately I'm OK with the change-it was funny to see Suki creep on Sokka.
I feel they should have kept Sokka's sexist tendencies that he had at the begginning of the original show. A big part of Sokka's character development was that he was pretty full of himself, and so he needed to be humbled so he could properly mature into the leader he ended up being. Overcoming his sexism was a pretty important part of that humbling, so taking that aspect of him away kind of takes away part of his character arc.
4:10 Holden’s cringe watching the kid’s acting when it’s actually a sad moment going on. 😂😂😂
"The only outsiders here are yourselves" she says while Sokka just standing there CLEARLY wearing Water Tribe clothing
I still can't believe how good Netflix made Avatar live action and One Piece live action!! Us anime fans are truly spoiled these days
I've noticed that many reactors evidently didn't receive the script that the major social media influencers on Twitter and TikTok got, which seems to dictate that we're going to hate this, regardless of what it is.
Really glad you guys are covering this series! I do like the actor for Zuko
One thing I really liked about this episode was that Gran-Gran's note was written in Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit people. I can't read it myself, but I live in Labrador, which has a fairly large Inuit population, so I recognize it easily. I thought it was a nice touch.
In the animation, the kinder gentler avatar that spoke with Aang was Roku, the Avatar before him. We are seeing much more of Kyoshi in this portrayal.
9:30 she's slowly getting there with Holden!
Also, Kiyoshi being more blunt and less understanding is canon for Kiyoshi, Imo they could've made Kiyoshi (as well as other past Avatars like Roku) be a little more helpful because contacting those spirits/past lives function as a guidance system, not something to spite you or guilt trip you.
Actually in the OG, Kyoshi and Roku took over Aang's body. I actually like this version o Kyoshi taking control of Aang because in the OG, Kyoshi possessed Aang to confess that she killed Chin the conqueror, causing Aang to be nearly boiled in oil, but here, as tough as she may be, at least she's saving the day, not bringing danger to Aang and then leaves him.
This is one of my favourite episodes from the live action, I think it's done very well, the change is definitely worth it.
Literally *just* finished yalls episode 1 reaction, refreshed RUclips, and BOOM here’s the episode 2 reaction uploaded 20 minutes ago.
My thoughts on the show keep bouncing back and forth. I haven’t watched past this episode yet but keep hearing it gets better. Look forward to seeing what you guys think about Episode 2 and beyond.
17:00 in the animated show, Aang turned into Roku when at his temple.
Aside from some spotty acting this is HEAPS better than the movie was! Much more enjoyable.. episode 4 was/is my favorite of them can’t wait to see y’all’s reaction to that episode
Kyoshi did possess Aang in the Cartoon. That’s when she tells how what’s his face died off the cliff and the footprint. They just used it differently
That Kyoshi form was awesome!!! Love to see more previous avatars as he visits more shrines!!!
Keeping watching ;)
That boomerang joke got me dying! LOL🤣😂
Lmao, that out of pocket Zuki zuki now had me dying
Sokka was definitely more sexist in the cartoon, but I don’t remember him pursuing Suki at all. First, he dismissed her as a warrior, and after she humbled him repeatedly he finally saw her for her talent as a fighter. He didn’t make any romantic moves on her - in fact, she surprised him by giving him a kiss on the cheek before he left.
Fun fact : I read that the actor who plays zhao thought he was going to be blue and in James Cameron’s avatar before given a script
I like some of the cast more than others, but I do think that they absolutely nailed the Sokka actor. He even sounds a bit like him. I also really liked the chemistry he had with Suki. All-in-all this was a really strong episode. I will say some upcoming episodes do change/splice things a bit and it makes the pacing feel a little wonky at times, but it could have been much worse. This is still loads better than the movie was. This was never going to be as good as the original show so as long as it's better than the movie that's all that matters in my book. I know it's a low bar, but I mean...we've seen so many studios mess up slam dunks before.
Aang's acting in this reminds me of how the kids acted in the first Harry Potter film, so I am hoping his acting skills will improve over the show's run, like theirs did in the later films. Although, in his defence, Aang in the cartoon did speak and act like he was hyped up on cocaine most of the time, so speaking a little fast isn't entirely out of character.
As for the Sokka Suki changes, it is fine and works well in this show, but I do think it was better in the original cartoon to give Sokka that development chance. Throughout he is constantly putting Katara down as well and viewing her as his little sister that needs protecting, the same as he does with the Kyoshi warriors initially. But by the end he has changed and grown and it makes a very big point of him acknowledging his mistakes and becoming a better man for it. I just worry that he won't get the chance to have as much character development in this show if they cut down on his flaws from the get go.
Imagine if they made a What If version of Avatar and it turns out that Each avatar had an animal that shared their multi-elemental bending. So that would mean that Roku's dragon, Appa and Naga would also be able to bend multiple elements. Just imagine Appa Earthbending. lol.
At least when Roku and Kyoshi took control of Aang in the original they were glowing and spirit-y so it was clear they weren’t actually present in this Kyoshi just straight up appears in the flesh
Did you know that the people who made Appa, used Manatees and Buffalo's as reference....well know you do 😋
I'm new to the series so I went in with an open mind. I love animation but I've always had this love hate relationship with certain animes. The art is usually exquisite but theres always afew characters that act weird to me. I'm not sure if that's something to do with the people who make them, and the culture it's made for or maybe I'm just not picking up on it (best example I can think of is how Master Roshi asks around attractive woman/How Goku is around food)
Anyways, it wasn't a masterpiece, but from someone who doesn't know the source material, I enjoyed it. There's small issues throughout the series, but I've gotten so use to being disappointed when it comes to new movies and series, that I walked away liking it alot more then I thought. Looking forward to seeing you two watch the rest of the series, take care
They seem to have combined a bunch of diffeent storylines into each other. Swapped a few things here and there. Like kyoshi possessing aang is just kind of like a swap for roku taking over aang in the fire temple
There is nothing wrong with the Aang actor. Literally just watch a few clips of the animated series and shit is the same just a deeper voice
I love that Jen set herself up a second time to say "the fire nation is soo cool" right before they explain (or show) a genocide. lol tee'd up those "ya Jen these people are REALLY COOL" jokes all over again hahaha.
I honestly think it would SO DOPE IF THEY MADE A KYOSHI SPIN OFF.
The show takes some creative liberties. Especially in the next few episodes. But I do believe that they make sense. Seems like they wanted to knock out a lot of well known characters in this season and even future seasons without having to dedicate too much of the plot to them. I won’t get specific so I don’t spoil
I would’ve preferred the Roku possession blowing up the temple
I suppose for the appearance of making the elements LOOK as realistic as possible they went in the direction f having them be messy and chaotic. Let me explain what I mean. When Katara does her water whip it looks as though someone is just taking a bowl of water and swiping it sideways in an arc-like motion and the water flies out; as opposed to the cartoon where the water actually looks like a thin stream of water and acts like a whip while floating around the bender. But I can see that if they animated it closer to the cartoon the elements might LOOK too CGI and unrealistic.
The color of your screen record is like an old movie, cool 😂
The mom is from Karate Kid 2 or 3 can’t remember but her hair is a call back to that
I feel like everyone reacting who have seen the original show before seem to have a forgotten the Avatars can posses the current avatar sometimes lol. They even add the caveat to the show that it can only happen at certain places
There was an interested comment made about not sein one for one the same scenes as the animated series. (for ovious reason of course) A small number people have the opinion that is not as good or many other negative comments. But I also have the opinion that I need to look at this interpretation as it's own and also not to have unrealistic expectations about any re-acting of an original beloved series. Is not possible feel the same with a re-make as we did with an original.
I dont think they did the grandma dirty, she got dirty but that was more to show how hard she fought to defend her home
You both should look into reacting to watching the Legend of Korra. I’d love to see how you like it (or don’t) in comparison to ATLA
Well I finally finished and overall for me at least, it was a flawed at times disappointing, at times decent and at times boring show. There's things it got right and there's things it got wrong. But I'll just discuss my views on the first two episodes so as to not spoil things as a whole.
Episode 1's Opening Prologue was pretty cool. My nitpick is Aang saying he wants to go somewhere "High" to think things over and decides to go to the bloody ocean "Down" below. The writing there made no sense whatsoever for me at least. Would have been symbolic to have him in the sky and get spooked or tossed off by Lighting and going down into the sea (A reference/foreshadowing to Azula's lighting attack on him) vs over what we got. The rest of the episode was fine up until Aang was escaping Zuko's Ship. Felt like there was a scene cut inbetween when he gets his glider inside Zuko's Room to when he's out on top trying to jump off the ship and Zuko is suddenly chasing him down. Editing there was weird. Other than that, first fine episode.
Episode 2 for the most part was decent but some of the special/visual effects felt amaturish. The whole Kyoshi blasting off like Superman looked off. And removing Sokka's sexism and changing it to Suki now having the hots for Sokka was weird. In an attempt to removed so-called sexism, all they did was force sexism in a different kind of way. That said, I liked both actors for Sokka and Suki and they were overall fine but just weird to change something that's used to humble a charatcer and make them appreciate and respect the opposite sex and even his own sister afterwards to a lovey-dovey "Im strong! No I'm stronger" kind of vibe. I didn't necessarily hate it but it was just weirdily handled.
Overall, first two episodes weren't bad at all. Zuko, Iroh, Zhao and (especially Ozai's) Performances in this show were a huge highlight for me as whole and made it a decent watch. Like I said, there's positives in this but its working against some negatives that really shouldn't have been a thing in this that bring the show down for me. But at least its still better than the movie, which honestly, isn't saying much. Anything is better than the original film. Also, the tone is kinda off. The original cartoon series was this vibrant colourful adventure where dark things occured but it knew how to mix up things with well-timed humour and comedy. The show is more dark and overall serious and looses alot of the goofyness that made it such a treasured hit for so many. Its still funny at rare times but alot of the humour doesn't land sometimes. Feels less Avatar and more MCU dare I say.
Zuki's mom is Kumiko from Karate Kid 2.
Aang ''changes'' into Roku in the first season just a bit later on. This adaptation gave that moment to Kyoshi. Im oke with that but they kinde ruined Roku in this adaption imo.
I Adore this show❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
funny he gets called out for his perve comments but is named hardman lol
Can we get grandma a brush? 😂
There is one BIG problem with how they did Sokka and Sukis relationship here later on in the season. We all know how he fell in love with Yuei and Suki, but here its really awkard because of how they did it
You forgot a lot about the og show 😂 but I think that helps ur enjoyment
After watching the whole show by far, the actor who plays zuco is the best out of all the kids. But it really makes me wonder how many other kids were read for aang and if politics played a role because there's no way this kid was a better actor Then the hundreds of other kids they had read the part. Each episode I was hoping he would grow on me so hopefully They make this kid realize he's still a child and needs acting classes a s a p
this is the best ep
8:18 Well Holden, men aren't allowed to flirt with women anymore. They get cancelled and called a creep in this day and age.
So if Sokka were to pursue Suki, oh boy.. He's be called a pig in no time. The show would get cancelled, and the show writers would never work again.
I doubt that
@@daurydavis3983You don't go on Twitter much, do you?
The writers choosing to have Gran Gran slip in the Water Bending Scroll..............that is such a Destruction of a HUGE Amount of Character Development for Katarra...
This series really does appear like it was written by the Ember Island Players based on scraps of stories they heard vs Writers in Our World who Watched the Original Series.
But I guess we are not allowed Character Development and Character Flaws with only 8 episodes...sigh.
Honestly....there is Better Character Development and Subtext in the Cartoon than this series...these 2 pieces of Media literally Show that a CARTOON can have more Emotional Weight and Subtext than a Live-Action show...and I can not wait for Animation to be Accepted as Serious Forms of Media...because we clearly are not there yet based on this series and the reactions I have been seeing.
heck, just compare Dragonball Evolution to the first 13 episodes of Dragonball and that makes my point as well 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You as the viewer saw kyoshi but the characters saw aang
Unfortunately the changes they made have taken me out of the story. I think I would enjoy this more if I never watched the animation
lmaoooo y'all gotta chill -- his acting gets better as the series goes on LOL
Well it’s gonna be very different from the animated show do just don’t expect it to be the same haha…
I'm confused how gordon is a bad actor? He's literally aang on screen and off screen
Some people are just hard to please
While the actor for Aang isn't perfect, I think a lot of the issues with him in the first few episodes isn't always the performance itself, but some of the dialogue he's been given. A lot of the dialogue in the first few episodes is either very exposition-y and clunkily written, making it sound somewhat unnatural, or it comes off as very on-the-nose and hand-holding, like they feel the need to spoon-feed the audience what they should think or feel in a given moment.
The dialogue and delivery though a bit amateurish or unnatural at times…it actually is fitting for the cartoon. Because the original show has some of that too. I’m sure it wasn’t intended but I think it gives it that feel.
I literally don’t understand what was bad about the acting from Aangs actor when he was saying goodbye to gyatso?
Please watch the show more often 😢 so we can get more reactions
Awesome reaction of my favorite episode of Avatar The Last Airbender!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Lol Jennifer Hardman
You guys get a new editor? Editing to this video and the overall look is noticeably different and I'm not liking it all to much. Just putting that out there.
It's an ok show altho I don't like how they sped the time and plot so fast a pace.
Enjoying it so far, Sokka zuko and iroh are the big standouts for me, enjoying their performaces. Aang feels way too serious and the dialouge feels forced most of the time, and seems like they are babying us too much by always explaining exactly whats haplenong on screen. Never the less, all round an enjoyable watch so far.
I don't know if it's just me but they should have kept sokka's sexist humor.
Granted I’m only 4 episodes in but it feels weird to me that they’ve subbed out Roku for Kyoshi as Aangs avatar guide she’s a lot more rigid and justice by any means necessary kind of Avatar as compared to the more wise and empathetic Avatar that Roku was they at least meshed a bit better then a warrior would to a pacifist monk like sure I don’t want it to be scene for scene recreation of the animated show cuz then what would the point be but at least so far to me it seems the show runners don’t really understand the characters and their relationships to eachother and the nuances that made them so lovable in the first place idk I’m starting to see why the original creators of the show left the production of this show to start their own studio
i finsished this szhow today and imma give it a 5/10. still better then the movie lol
Holden, blink twice if you're under duress
Are you going to watch Percy Jackson season 2 has already been confirmed
Kyoshi is Korra on drugs
For me the episodes get worse as they go on, I'm keen to hear your opinion.
Your reaction stinks if you think aang is doing a bad job then just don't watch the show most people don't have a problem yes he slightly talking faster it doesn't mean its bad this is embarrassing behavior from you two. His acting is better than your emotionless expression reacting. Just stop watching its better that way we don't need to listen to you pointlessly nagging its annoying.
Hi!!
One of the weaker episodes IMO, but the later ones definitely step it up
Way to picky
They are children. They will get better over time. Look at Harry Potter for an example.
