- Sri Lanka to get first Tamil military leader in 50 years
A member of Sri Lanka's Tamil ethnic minority is set to head a branch of its military for the first time in 50 years. Vice Admiral Travis Sinnaiah is taking charge of Sri Lanka's navy after a highly decorated career.
His appointment is seen as an important step in post-war Sri Lanka, but Tamil parties say the government must do more.
Al Jazeera's Minelle Fernandez reports from Colombo.

2. I do not support LTTE, but they did not want to take over Sri Lanka, they wanted the Tamil areas to be cut off from it so the Tamils did not have to suffer under the murder, rape and daily inequality under the Sinhalese rule

Important thing he said: He stood on the right side. So ethnicity didn't matter. Unfortunately the governments always don't do the right thing. Not specific to sri lanka, but common to many developing countries. The leaders of this same government is responsible for starting/fueling the civil war itself back then. See how 1983 issue was managed by the then government, which was a unp government and ranil was there as a leader.
He is more Sinhala than Tamil. His father was Tamil, his mother is Sinhalese. He was raised in Sinhala south and is culturally more close to Sinhalese.

Iam not sure if you are aware about it, but there is a reason why some Colombo tamils are looked upon down by Tamils from the North/ Eastern part. They deny( not all of course) the genocide committed by the sri lankan government and didnt care about the atrocities happened in the North. They are more influenced by the governments propaganda and have no problem with siding with the government.
