None of this would have happened had India not given birthed to LTTE by arming, funding and training them to be a ruthless terrorist organization that recruits children to becoe suicide bombers by brainwashing them.

the tamil rebels who resisted IPKF were LTTE. Also other tamill groups helped IPKF, so LTTE were fighting multiple enemies/ traitors at the same time. I dont think you ever have an election to vote for an armed organisation. The ground reality is that 95% of tamils supported LTTE. Sarath Fonseka, commander of SL army, said that had prabhakaran surrenedered and entered the democratic polotics of Sri Lanka, then he would be the CM of the northeast. In other words the enemy themselves admit tamils whole heartedly supports LTTE. To say tamils didnt vote for LTTE and call them terrorists and then praise their resistance to IPKF is contradictory.
But the case is , the war between sinhaleese and tamil is happened , because of political activity . As a sinhaleese we love and respect to the tamil tradition.Enough is enough we don't want war against our brothers and Sisters. Any kind of tamil people can live peacefully in Southern , Sabaragamu, central , westeren , N-central and N-western provinces in sri lanka . Important part is lower cast tamil people and innocent tamils who lives in Tea estates . Political Leaders Like Thondaman , they didn't care about facilities of thier peoples. No education , No health facilities ... But at the election time Sinhala , Tamil even Muslim politicions use nationality and religious problems for there campaign.Shameless politicians. Once again I said there is No cultural war between Mid level and lower level people of sinhala and tamils. Politicians never support to end this shameless war against brothers .
I used to think during the 2012-2013 timeframe, just like Ranveer that due to social media there would be more understanding between people and there would be more peace. But unfortunately, it has been the opposite. I honestly feel like the world was much peaceful before the Internet era. I've friends who are both Sinalese and Tamil Lankans and there's no tension at the grass roots but surely there are differences at the political level. Me being an Indian Tamil, I'd side more towards my Tamils on the other side but I'm sure by culture I wouldn't show any bias for the Lankan people as a whole

There are small micro tensions between two parties in every part of the world. It can be among schools, among sports teams, among siblings, among any two parties. But during the 30 year civil war this micro tensions became major and huge between sinhalese and Tamils. After the end of civil war, it started to die down. New younger generations have started build bonds again between both communities. Sometimes politicians and some extremists try to add fuel to fire again for their own personal gains. I think intelligent people from people should identify this and not let them use it for their own personal gains.

Jaffna Tamils cut their nose off to spite their face. You could've had 25% of the Sri Lankan population be Tamil, but caste issues got in the way. There is two types of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
1) Sri Lankan tamils (which has a caste system). The upper caste Sri Lankan Vellalar were powerful than the Brahmins. For centuries, Sri Lankan tamil upper caste were privilege and lived in Colombo. The 1983 Colombo attacks were against upper caste Jaffna Colombo Vellalars. It impacted education and job sector.
Prabhakran was OBC Karaiyar. Growing up he was poor and uneducated. He had hatred for upper caste Sri Lankan Vellalar as they were more powerful. His family owned temples. Despite that he followed Christianity. He named his son Christian names. Some says he is an atheist. Most of LTTE cadres were Christians. From LTTE agenda reducing caste discrimination to the way LTTE cadres were buried instead of cremated.
The caste system in Tamil Nadu different from east and northern province of Sri Lanka . LTTE was mostly Karaiayars, Dalits and few upper caste fighting against upper caste Sri Lankan Vellalar and majority Sinhasle. This is because upper caste were privilege while the Dalits joined LTTE.
Colombo Sri Lankan Vellalar never supported LTTE. Jaffna Sri Lankan Tamil upper and middle caste had mixed feelings about LTTE but supported them to fight against discrimination by Sinhalese. The ones had mixed feelings about the methods used by LTTE. For example, child soliders.
LTTE was known for assassination against upper caste Sri Lankan tamil leaders (doctors, engineers, lawyers and politicians)spoke against LTTE, taxing, bank looting, money laundering, drug trafficking, kidnapping , child solider (policy where family members should give up one child to LTTE (child abuse), suicide bombing and many more.
By 1980s, most upper caste Vellalar left Jaffna and moved to abroad. As they couldn't lived under LTTE and SL gov dictatorship. For example , if an upper caste owned a business. They would be taxed by the LTTE. To avoid this and live peacefully, most upper caste fled the country.
Caste is still followed till today within the Sri Lankan tamil community.
2) Indian tamils of Sri Lanka (mostly dalits) came to Sri Lanka during the British period who worked at tea plantation. No citizenship
Upper caste Sri Lankan tamil Vellalar don't consider Indian tamils of Sri Lanka as one of them. There has been marriage between low caste Sri lankan tamil and Indian tamil of Sri Lanka (Dalits) for centuries. Upper caste Sri Lankan tamil and upper caste sinhalse have been married for centuries.
These two tamils are considered two different ethnic groups in Sri Lanka. Then there is Sri Lankan moors (different ethnic group), Sri Lankan Chetties, Sinhalese, Portuguese, Kaffirs.
There are Jaatis even among Sinhala Buddhists of Sri Lanka too.

Sinhalese-Tamil animosity originates from Chola invasion of northern SL in 992 A.D which lasted for 70 years before being driven out by local forces led by King Vijayabahu I. Then a couple of centuries later Pandyans invaded Northern SL Jaffna (betraying the help Sinhalese king gave them during the Pandyan Civil War (1169-1177) where Sinhalese king captured Madurai during a war to help the Pandyans repel Chola occupation) then the Sinhalese king Parakramabahu VI''s adopted son chased the pandyans back out. After securing the North the prince came back to the south ~1455AD and by 1467 AD the same Pandyans reinvaded as the Prince was in the south thus establishing the Ariyachakravarti kingdom. This was right before portugese invasion of SL in ~1500ad which didnt give Sinhalese King enough time to attempt a recapture of Jaffna as the Portugese suddenly appeared and started wars down south. Then the Portugese captured Jaffna after losing a battle down south and refocusing their efforts. Basically for the next 300 years Sinhalese and Tamil ethnic conflict was "Frozen in time" with fuel being added by British importing hundreds of thousands of Tamil workers to work on tea plantations in the Hill country Central SL as the Sinhalese outright refused to bend to British plantation work. What resulted in the Civil war was brewing since 992AD.

King Nissanka Malla made it compulsory to have possession of the Buddha's truth relic to be the ruler of SL, a tradition that was passed down till the last SL kingdom. Ironically, King Nissanka himself was South Indian. The last king of SL too was South Indian. Most of the Tamils in the north became Buddhists and vice versa over the years. I grew up in the central mountainous region where the majority of the tea plantation workers were Tamils who were brought in as indentured labourers by the British.
Whatever the history is behind SL, I hope the younger generations will put these minuscule differences aside and match on as a united bunch.
The subdued tensions were exploited many times by politicians for their mere gain. Rajapakses took full advantage of it by even creating pseudo-Buddhist extremists.

This failure and humiliation to IPKF lead to huge reform in India's military resulting in the much stronger and competent and respected force we have today. If you search this for Britain or Germany , You'll get answer as English or German. So there is no discrimination in Sinhala language Act. As far as I know, Tamil was allowed to used in north for Judicial and other activities.
