Most of the Sri Lankans do not hold any opinion about the Ramayana. Many are devotees of Vishnu, but can’t see that much of a devotion towards Rama. Apart from that Shaivanism is more popular than Vaishnavism here in LK. If we rank deities by mere popularity in LK, it’s something like Karthikeya, Ganesh, Shiva, Sarasvati, Vishnu and Laxmi. So avatars of Vishnu and Laxmi are not that popular.

During the Pandyan civil war, King Parakrama of Pandya kindgom requested the assistance of King Parakrama of Lanka against the invasion by Cholas into the Pandya kingdom. As a result Sinhalese navy made an amphibious assault into Rameswaram and came all the way to Pandya kingdom to rescue their king. After killing the Chola invader the story says that Lanka Putra, the general of the Lankan batallion ruled that part for many years before handing it over to the heir of the Pandyan king. Such is the connection.

I am a Sinhalese Buddhist, and UTHPAL-VARNA DEVA (Vishnu) is a protector deity of Buddhism and widely recognized as protector of Sinhalese. According to the story of Ramayana Rama may have defeated Raavan, but we Sinhalese are the ones that COMPLETELY DESTROYED and ENDED the Raakshasa/Yaksha rule and power base of the sons of Raavan and created the present day civilization of Sinhalei (now known as Sri-Lanka). Unlike Ramayana this is HISTORICALLY CONFIRMED FACT. (I am not saying that Ramayana is false, but it is historically unverified to this day and it most likely an Epic). All the Buddhist mega structures and giant stupas across the Island were built by us after we defeated the Rakshas and took control. We also have a strong genetic blood connection with the Vangan and Shaakyan (Gauthama Buddha's tribe) Kshathriya tribes. Also when the Maurya dynasty empire in mainland India was lost later the remaining Maurya elite became Sinhalese and created the 'Moriya' Sinhalese dynasty. The last ruling Mauryas were not in mainland India after the fall of the Maurya empire. They became part of the Sinhalese. Also much later many Bengali and Oriya Kshathriyas migrated to the Island and also became normal Sinhalese after they fled continous Muslim invasions which mass murdered Buddhists and destroyed Buddhism in the North-East of India. Sinhala language is also an Indo-Aryan language and closer to North-East Indian languages as evident by the Mahavansha (Sinhalese history record) too. Some of us came back to India to the Kerala/Karnataka region and even had a dynasty called Mannanar dynasty kingdom in Kerala. The Sinhalese that came to Kerala became known as Thiyyars (coming from the DEVA tribe of Sinhalese) and Ezhavas (coming from the name Hela which is another name for Singh-Hala). Thiyyars and Ezhavas exist in Kerala to this day. Thiyyars and Ezhavas were known to be Buddhist and still hold a couple of Buddhist traditions among them even after they became Hindu due to Shankaracharyas efforts.

According to Sri Lankan history, the story goes like this,
During the reign of King Ravana of Sri Lanka, his wife became pregnant. According to Pulasti Srishivara, it was said that if a child is born before 12 midnight, that child will strengthen the kingdom of Ceylon, and if a child is born after 12 midnight, it will destroy the kingdom of Ceylon. On that day, the wife gave birth to twins. The male child born before 12 o'clock was named Meghnada. King Ravana and the wife secretly said that there would be danger from the people of kinndom of Cylone and for the good of the kingdom of Ceylon after 12 o'clock. The born princess was set adrift in the sea after strict protection. After that she grew up in India. Ravana goes to India because of the problem with Rama becouse Rama fight with King Rawana's sister to get control of that area. When he saw Princess Sita, Ravana recognized his daughter from her childhood physical features by looking only her face. After the understanding of her past. pricess Sitha wanted to see her mother. She came kingdom of cylone to see her mother with her father. Even though Rama came looking for him coldly and came to battle with Ravana, King Ravana was patient until his son-in-law's misunderstanding was removed. But Prince Meghanad fought with Rama. Even though Rama died in that battle, King Ravana restored him with the power of medicine in kingdom of Cylone. King Ravana warned his son to prevent another fight with the Prince Rama. Prince Meghanada who was performing a pooja without weapons is killed. Even when King Ravana arrives there, King Ravana is unable to revive Prince Meghanada because it has been a long time since he died. After this incident, King Ravana becomes very weak mentally. The king became more and more depressed because of the story told by Pulasti Srishivara about the birth of the child. It was only after that that he realized the seriousness of bringing Princess Sita to Sri Lanka to visit her mother. Because Prince Meghanada is a much more powerful person than King Ravana. In the end, the kingdom of Sri Lanka lost a strong defender. After seeing the destruction that Prince Rama was doing to Sri Lanka like a frenzy, the kings of Ravana finally fought with Prince Rama. In that battle, King Ravana fell into a deep sleep due to a poisoned arrow sent by Prince Rama. But Prince Rama could not kill King Ravana. The demons in Cylone drove Rama and the group to India

For Sri Lankans it's just a story written by someone. It's not thought in Schools at all. What we learn in Schools are the Jathaka Tales. For Sri Lankans the India we know or learn is no longer exist. It's the ancient India, not the present revisionist version most of the Indians familiar with. One thing brother. I believe that you guys didn't took what minister didn't said as we respect india and your culture so that he cannot offence people. Let me clearly explain what sri lankans knows and they believe.
In the day of meganath born pulasthi rishi is pretending that there identical twins are going to born when mandodarie is getting pregnant. And the day meganath borns there is another birth and pulasthi rishi is naming her as soheli and ravan has to exiled her with sadness in a golden boat to beach area near mithila kingdom with the letter to the king Janak. And that day there is celebration and being unable to announce as ravan's request. Then king Janak is saying that the princess who born for him from the pruthuwi (that means earth) and without proposing his daughter to prince Ram as the promise of his protection he is looking for a first prince to his first daughter who born from earth and her name is sita. This is what written in the inscription of paramuka ravana in namal pokuna temple. So always remember that there is two sides and when ravana see sita and brings back he had to hide and he hide in one of his most comfortable cave palace in ella area and we call it ravana guhawa and it still has beautiful garden and cave pool. Why he is hiding her and giving all the comfort as his daughter due to the rule of srilanka is that anyone can damage someone who had exiled from sri lanka due to issues of horoscope. This is father and daughters love and due to that when ravana is burning sita is running to her farther and trying to get close to him. But lord Ram is misunderstanding this hidden truth and he is telling to walk on fire to show sita's pathipooja. With these anxiety oneday sita(soheli) is going to the jungle with her kids.
Remember that no need to offensive. There is always two sides of story which is you cannot judge. And as Sri Lankans we believe Lord Ravan left his crown and went to yoga meditation with kundalini. Don't worry I know you guys believe he can be awake again. But from sri lankans perspective it is not happening as he already have leave everything that day for nirvana. What sri lankans believe and they strong as thinking of that 'Nothing is permanent' (sayalu dhe anithyaya) and 'we should leave oneday with leaving everything here' (siyalla heradha ya yuthuya). So 'Dushera' will happen many times and years in future india with hate and revenge. But sri lankans are expecting the 'Nirvana' without hating or expecting anyones revenge. We will look for Nirvana but the question is are you guys still want to live with a hate and negativity till you die? You guys can ask from your heart. We love all you guys and respect. Believe that you guys will see the truth and finds nirvana to leave this all stubborn without being framed and crushed in to man made story. Blessings of Lord Shiva 🙏

The reality is Sri Lankans see Rawana as a genius who was good at everything who helped the country to be united as one, and some people think that Sita is a daughter of Rawana and after she had to come to Sri Lanka there was a misunderstanding about the incident and the countries clashed. Thats how many people think cause we don't see Rawana as a bad character. However if Rawan which Indians talk about is from India its not the one we are talking about cause. We don't talk about Ramayana. We talk about how King Rawana helped to save Sri Lanka. Thats all. But some mixed up religious men and women who are buddhist as well as hindu at the same time ( which means who are buddhist but they believe in gods too) spread the message about the Ramayana so people know about Ramayana. And thats it.

This question has to be asked from a Historian. Although even they would have different views due to different versions of mythical interpretations.

They took off all Hindu temples from Tamils and destroyed it. Lord Buddha didn’t visit Sri Lanka. He didn’t even come to Sri Lanka.

The birth place of Ravan was actually Andhralay. It is current day Australia, which still is one of the oldest continent on planet Earth. BUT during that era, Australia was way closer and connected to Jambudweep (India).

Ram and Ravana (demon) epic is only a fictional story book and those characters described are just depicted to show how powerful Hindu Gods were and how cruel Ravana and Srilankan people were. If Ravana(demon) existed in Sri Lanka then every Sri-lankan child would have known about him. This is a fake story and Srilankans were not demons.

Ramayan is not a fantasy. Its not open to your own personal interpretation. Ravan did have many good qualities but it does not mean he was the hero of Ramayan. And he does not have to been seen as the king of Lanka hence all Sri Lankan people need to worship him. Its naive to interpret it like this!

Dhasaratha d king had four wives which teaches man that more than one wife can destroy a kingdom undoubtly.
Dhasaratha was badly wonded in d battle ground n Khaikheyi(his 3rd wife) ran to his rescue n saved Dhasaratha who promised her a wish.
Aging Dhasaratha wanted to install Rama his eldest son from all his four wives but Khaikheyi wanted Dhasaratha to fulfill his promise to d wish he granted n install Bharathan(her son) to d throne instead. Teaching d world not to openly promise anyone while being excited.
Despite crying n begging Khaikheyi not to do unjust, Dhasaratha thought d world that a man keeps his word. N Rama thought d world that a son never go against his father at whatever cost.
As Rama was exiled, Bharathan who refused at first to be installed to d thrown thought d world that d younger one obeys d elders n be installed despite his refusal.
Sita was nine when she thought d world that a woman must at all cost be with her wedded husband through thick n thin. N Sita left d luxury of d palace to join Rama to d forest.
Little Sita was abducted by Ravan who avenged his sister Soorpanaghai's nose cut by Laxman. Laxman was a Shiva Bhakt n he never touched Sita even once.
Rama as a young prince cld hv married any princess as he pleased but Rama thought d world that a man must give his life to save his wife at any time. This is d greatest teachings of One Woman Man n One Man Woman to mankind.
We do remember Moses bringing out d 10 Commandments which one of it saying "Thy should not sleep with thy neighbour's wife". This is what Ranayana thought d world on how to live in a civilised world.
    My Two Cents on Ramayan.
    Wassallam

Hello Ladies and Gents, Now it make sense why Sri lankan Sinhalese love married women and married men
Their Ancestor is Rawana who kidnapped Married Sita. Don't get me wrong I agree there are some good sinhalese citizens who are very decent people. In the Final War in 2009 more than 100,000 innocent Tamil Women were Sexually Assaulted by Sri lankan sinhala Military leaders and sinhala government politicians who were and are still in power.
