Every service member hates drill, but every service member will also judge the shit out of every other country's drill
Thats not true, Most Marines I know really enjoy it except during boot camp lol, Drill is a extremely big part of the building blocks of Marines, "disipline". 20 Years later and I still miss the sound of 60+ Rifles all cracking in cadence, guys do such crisp hard movments the hand gaurds on the rifle come flying off. There is just something about a Marine plt and doing rifle drill that is just outfuckingstanding lol.

Good old Von Steuban did that to the US Army starting at Valley Forge. As an old Prussian officer he gave the US the Prussian marching style without the Goose Step or any stomping. He was the first to require the Flat hand US style salute.

US seems to hate drill, there is always someone who is out of time.
Most of the marching styles are categorized into Prussian style (kick the legs high) and British style (swing the arms high), so it is easy to recognize whether the country was affected by Soviet Union or the UK.

Yeah, unfortunatly... Our marching style looks really badass when done properly, but look REALLY bad when not done right. But unfortunatly, our military has neglected ceremonial drill for most units. But glad to see the Marines kicking ass like always LOL!

I’m not criticising the American style of parading, I hesitate to call it ‘marching’, more like orderly walking, some out of step. As the brat of a British soldier remembering countless parade ground marching it’s difficult when comparing style to not comment on variety. It’s interesting to note the styles of some African nations, perhaps commonwealth or ex commonwealth, are very formal just like the British military. It’s also interesting to note that the Royal Marines and the United States Marine Corps have a similar dedication to tight disciplined marching.
The USMC does parade like champs. They even have their own language at drill and ceremony.
I don't know about the US Army, but in the USMC we were trained to march with our stepping and arm swinging in sync, with an erect posture. It wasn't about strolling through the park.

It’s effective for what matching should be, why waste all the time and energy on some flashy drill that’s not going to help in combat? The US pattern of march keeps the posture straight, the legs loose and is low effort on the muscles. Everything you’d want to have on a long ruck march in combat. The British form of marching doesn’t work in the real world.
@loganbaileysfunwithtrains606 Everything you said is true, but drill has historically been a sign of good training, discipline, and unit cohesion. Plus, it can be inspiring as hell. I wouldn't want it to go away. Also, a parade environment is different than humping with gear. I don't expect anyone on the line to be goosestepping.
Back in the early 70's in USAF basic training, my training flight had a recruit who had served in the South African or some British Commonwealth military. He had the "muscle memory" to raise his knee too high, swing his arms, and to stomp his feet when marching. He drove the TI crazy.
I was an officer in the US Army National Guard and was commissioned from Valley Forge Military Academy. At that school the drill and ceremony was based on the British system. Early on muscle memory was difficult to break.
I remember Back in 2004, the US guys gave up trying to tach US drill To the new Iraq Army as all the Recruits already Knew British Drill and could not be trained out of it

Former Retired US Army Band Drum Major here. I have participated in literally thousands of military parades over the 20 years I was in and I got to say the US contingents looked bad, especially the Army. I know they don't emphasize D&C anymore, especially while they are deployed on exercise but holy crap that was bad. One dude (reservist\Air Force?) looked like he was jumping on cockroaches, just doing his own thing. Uniforms looked like crap (except the Marines of course) buttons unbuttoned and caps crooked. Looks like the NCOs didn't even bother checking. However the Czech Special Warfare Sunglass platoon looked super cool. 😂😎
We've always been like this, Patton was known for beating up soldiers from other units for not wearing their ties. And bot German and Japanese commanders would go into great depth about how they hated losing to an undisciplined army
That's cuz soldiers prefer to focus on useful skills and not antiquated D&C.

All the country's marching styles are unique in their own way but the "Josh" (Energy) of the Indian Army soldiers is Unmatched! 💪🔥🔥
I always have liked the Chinese transition from walking march to goosestep. Along with the salute of the officer.
Watch what they do with the flag when they raise it in the morning, simple yet badass
The thinking behind their march is so efficient. They only switch to the high-energy ceremonial goosestep when they pass in front of the uppity-ups, otherwise it's just the practical no-frills pacing. Either mode, they still keep in step. Very professional appearance.

I remember a company of Royal Welshmen marching onto a parade ground in the US during a training exchange. The Americans burst into a spontaneous round of applause, I don't think they had seen soldiers march properly before. 🤣🤣🏴🏴🇬🇧🇬🇧

Seems like most of Britain's former colonies took the march and just went nuts with the arm-swinging.
Some of military marches are really tough and rise the legs higher. It's also used more strength and it's stressful for the legs. Others looks cool and steady and still in uniformity

Here in Finland the main point of marching is to get from place A to place B and there is no need do anything extra fancy.
Most armies have two or three types of marches. A formal one for parades, a slow one for special ceremonies and an efficient low energy one for when you just want to get from A to B with your rifle and backpack.

It’s interesting to see that all the former British Empire countries, plus Nepal, all march with similar drill to the British forces, arms swinging shoulder high, heads held high, and completely in step. 😊

I had a friend who joined the Canadian Armed Forces years ago. He described the intense marching drills he had to endure in basic training. All of it was based on the old British marching style. The instructors were very strict about everything. The marching technique was very specific, and you could not graduate until you got it right.
Countless hours on the parade square, drill, drill, drill. I loved every second of it. My dad had taught me all the commands from the British army. When I joined the Canadian Armed Forces it was easy to pick up. Proud of the parades every Friday at the schools, with the RSM always ready to pounce!

China was influenced by the Prussian style of marching, hence the goose step. The goose step is used only when before who ever is watching from the viewing stand. You will see lines on the roadway where the start and stop the goose step.
The Chilean march and uniforms still closely resemble the German marching up until the end of WW2.
Well, the Americans are still marching in their relaxed citizen soldier style. Compare films of the Germans marching into Paris with the American marching into the city 4 years later. Proof positive that the guys who march the best and have the coolest uniforms don't always win. @@iworkout6912

Drill marching was invented to improve displine and unit cohesion. If you can march in sync, then you can fight in sync.

Being able to shoot arrows together, raise shields together, and keep formation together to cover flanks.
Since when do soldiers fight in sync? I doubt you want to be the soldier who has to be ordered to break formation when making first contact with the enemy. Drill marching make sense when the enemy is so near to you you can see the white in their eyes as it forces the rest who do not want to be there to be there and preserve unit cohesion. That hasn't been a thing since WW1 when the Germans adopted squad-based fire and manouvre tactics which emphasizes on individual initiative to survive...

A bunch of men who are willing to put their pride aside and parade like a troupe of parrots are more likely to follow orders and have strong bonds. It's hard to breed soldiers who would die for your country when they're not even willing to march properly for your country.

After basic training, except for drill or ceremonial teams (e.g., funerals) and music bands, marching is rarely done since parade marching takes PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. After basic training, you have a job (medic, maintenance, clerk, artillery, security, taking continuing education classes, etc.) and the time and effort to practice parade marching doesn't add to your job performance or benefits.
Indian military marching is from the British, arms swinging front and back, salute with hands turned. Some former Soviet countries marching with arms straight down without any movement …

During basic and AIT. You March pretty much all the time. So you get pretty good at it. Once you get to your actual unit. The only time you ever marches for PT. But even that is rare sometimes and nobody really cares because you're about to be running.

When I was in Naval Academy our company was the designated parade company. One day due to a very uninspired choose of the location of the parade ground, combined with an early heavy rain, we made a big fu...up from the parade march. Next day, for weeks we were exercising the parade march for months, every morning for half an hour. We never missed a march again.

I personally was trained by a military that marched in the British style so with a good swing of the arms.. I really don't know how some troops like the Mongolians could march with there arms perfectly by their sides

Don't attack me for my opinion. I did national conscription military service in Italy in 1985 and I recal how we had to march in a much more synchronised and orderly manner. What I saw here, ( I'm NOT criticizing) seemed like a walk more than a march. Perhaps it's because it wasn't really an official parade.
I wish our military focused on parades and marches more And I wish we had something iconic like the Prussia spike helmets….

The US Army used spiked helmets between 1880 and 1914 in formal dress uniforms. They were copied directly from German Army Pickelhaubes.

The US Marines at least made some effort but the other US branches just moseyed like an undisciplined mob on their way to a mess hall. The Czechs looked great - almost like the French legionnaires - and so too the Philippines, but the Africans went way over the top.

When I was in the (Canadian) Army, I had a section commander who would say words to the effect of "what the feck, Pte Bloggins, are you trying to become American?" if he thought your drill was sloppy.
I'm Mongolian and yes we kinda start off like normal swinging hand then when the commanding officer starts to give order we start marching like the Chinese with formal hand swing and when order given we drop hand and only the commanding officer salutes while marching untill he cancel order or give done confirmation then we start marching normally with swinging hand not too formal. Reminds me of my mandatory conscript 1 year serve and the Marsh tactics army games good times 😂

I once read about a group of American troops who were described as dirty, stinking and they looked like a mob. They soldiers under the command of Stonewall Jackson. In the end its more about how well a soldier is trained and knows how to fight than how he looks. Yes, soldiers should know how to march in step, but keep your priorities straight.

I remember back in Basic training at Fort Jackson, our drill sergeants told us that drills and ceremonies would not save our lives in Iraq... So, we never did them. To be honest, after 16 years in the military, I've never done them. Only occasional marching and a lot of standing around in formations.

Retired USAF here, the UASF doesn't march except for special occasions after basic training. If they had a basic training flight march instead of people who have marched in years you would see a massive difference. I was in for 23 years and never marched once after training, exception NCO academy. Had to stand formation several times but no marching.

I’m no military person or expert and I know we don’t march aggressively I guess you can say like other countries because our military considers it silly. But our guys always look so lame and ironically silly marching like they are constipated.
