  • Our off grid cabin build is getting started with clearing our road and putting in our foundation! Since this cabin is in Canada our foundation needed to be unaffected by frost so we chose to use concrete footing tubes.
    We are not sponsored by this company but if you are looking for a cabin foundation option and want to check out footing tubes here is their website: foottube.com/
    The $ 3000 estimated cost is in Canadian dollars since we are building in New Brunswick, Canada.
    We purchased our solar set up and propane units for our cabin at the Cabin Depot: www.thecabinde...
    As a Cabin Depot Associate we receive a small affiliate commission if you make a purchase through our links posted here, but at no extra cost to you. It helps to make this channel a reality! Use the discount code (BACKTOTHELAND) for $20 off your first purchase over $500. All the linked products are items we have purchased ourselves and use at our off grid cabin.

    So far I have watched thousands of hours of videos on log cabin foundations. And your videos by far beat them all. You are the only one I found who took the time to really explain what you are doing and why.
    Thanks for a great video

    Great! Appreciate the step-by-step nature of your video with the explanations of the why at each stage. Other RUclipsrs skip over the details. I feel like I could actually follow these steps. Thanks

    I’m glad the screw piles didn’t work, because concrete footers on the bedrock is super stable. Our cottage in Ontario was built on concrete footers onto rock about 40 years ago and the footers right on the rock haven’t moved. BUT... keep trees away because the roots can grow in a push the footers. Also keep water away too, with good eaves and landscaping, because wet on one side when it freezes will also move them. Previous owners ignored the foundation for about 20 years and 4 footers moved about a foot sideways, I’m resetting them now. They were the only ones not directly on the bedrock, water drained to them, and a row of cedar trees grew in and the roots moved them. Frost heave is not an issue when building near bedrock. Nice to see a family working together. :).

    Hitting bedrock is good. It saves you money as all you need are sonotubes that are planted on the bedrock. You don't need a wide base as you aren't building on soil, and this is a light structure after all. I'm confused as to why you had to go with the much more expensive footing forms and a backhoe while you already had the holes augered for sonotubes? Seems like unnecessary cost to me however it doesn't hurt to overbuild and I really like the foam around the tubes. This is a good, professional build.

    I know the sand was meant to weigh down the plastic and help prevent weed growth but I discovered sand is laden with moisture, which makes it an acceptable substrate for weeds. Perhaps gravel would’ve been a better option.

    • @backtothelandliving
      @backtothelandliving  2 года назад

      Yes looking back we would change the sand to gravel. Good thought. We will probably have to add some in the future

    I like those plastic pier block fillable pier block things make sure you and that sand under the house on top of the tarp plastic is going to wash out blow out use felt. And you gotta have at least two ways in or at least out going on

    Hi. Did you not use rebar reinforcement. If not can you explain why?? I like these forms but I think my code will require rebar reinforcement.

    Do you think sono tubes on the ledge would be sufficient? How much were those cone tubes?

    • @backtothelandliving
      @backtothelandliving  Год назад +1

      They have worked out great for us. In total they cost us about $2500 CAD, considering the tubes, concrete and renting the concrete mixer. I hope this helps, thanks for watching!

      Hi Kelly, sorry for taking a while to respond to you. The produce is called Footing Tubes, this is the website for the produce foottube.com/. We bought them through Arrow Construction, here is the link to their website if you want to check them out www.arrowco.ca/. They are a great company and we really like the footing tubes, so far we have had no issues.
