I am a complete beginner working on a theoretical exercise to map solkattu to mridangam strokes, and it is becoming obvious that there isn't a 1-1 mapping. For example, the solkattu 'tha' maps to stroke 'tha' in ' tha dhi dhom num' whereas the same 'tha' maps to 'dhi' in 'tha ka dhi na' and so on. Am I okay in assuming that at a phrase level, the mapping will always be the same? Like, I will always need to use 'dhi' for 'tha' whenever I play the phrase 'tha ka dhi na'? Will be grateful for any help or pointers!

For the Mridangam to sound good, it has to be tuned perfectly. If you are new to this instrument, I suggest you take it to a Mridangam maker. He will certainly help you fix it.
