Otake‘s serves aren‘t that consistent. Nishida has a high risk high reward jump serve, but Otake‘s is either a good day or bad day and today was a bad day. Like majority of them were out or landed in the net. Same with Kentaro Takahashi‘s jump serve, 80% was in the net or wide. At this point it would make more sense for them to learn an effective jump float serve like Lee, Onodera and Fuji but he can do both. Leave the jump serves to the players of the squad who‘re excelling at it i.e. Ishikawa, Nishida, Sekita formerly Yanagida, Shimizu, Ran, Takanashi, Otsuka and Fukuzawa.

Both teams are incredible. I just wanna give my opinion to my team which is Japan. Being down by 2 sets to 1 it's really hard to come back especially the opponent is the defending champions of VNL. Although the team are lacking in some aspects like the height and blocking, the composure of the team and the moral are strong. For the defending champions I like the great blocking and high floor defense. Both team are fought hard and give their all. I am super proud of Otake and Ogawa. They are the MVP and so consistent in this game (Ogawa please wear knee pads honey, I’m soooo afraid watching you “flying, rolling etc” without those pads on your knees)
Takanashi and Otsuka are another rising stars for the Japanese team. They are still young and can improve a lot in the future. Their back attack was really satisfying to watch eventho they sometimes made mistakes in defending.

It was an epic match. For those who were saying that Japan didn't even have their Team A play I think that's more of a strategy. Russia has the best blockers in the world, if Ishikawa and takahashi were there I think they would more likely have been blocked. They used the smarter players this time. Well done especially to the libero of Japan. On the other side, Russia I think is more on experimenting their team. They could have used Volkov Poletaev and Kliuka in that match but chose not to. Especially in the fourth and the fifth. But still kudos to Japan for showing that height is not that might. Proud Asian here.

Mostly Japan team are new and its their first time playing in pro international level, like libero Ogawa, 17 Takanashi, 13 Oya, 19 Otsuka and 21 Takahashi Ran. Also, I noticed how Pankov never gave pipe/BIC plays aside from Mikhaylov hitting from the right-back side. Maybe if they had more plays from the middle of the court they could've taken the game. This was an incredible match. I think both teams player well. But Japan played slightly better. Russia, I think, started "well, this is Japan" and we will beat them..." Then they realized that Japan is not pushover easily the Russians started their big artillery power attacks! Incredibly, the Japanese libero was there to defend the floor and he succeeded. Japan won the match on the floor defense. No team except Japan (may be Korea or China) can come up with such powerful defenses! Well done, Dai Nippon Team! Then, the Russian team is not their Olympic squad - Musersky and Volvich did not play. Mikhailov did not play the full match. Then, Japanese team was inferior too - Isihkawa and Onodera did not play, and Yuji is absent. Thus, Japan did really well.! Go Go Go and the Dai Nippon Team!

I felt whoever won the fifth set is deserving. Both Japan and Russia deserves this win, it's just that Japan outplayed russia. Also, I see a lot of bench potential from Japan. This is nearly the bench player/ second stringers with actually rookies for the national team. The O trio tho, Otake, Oya, Ogawa 💪

Japan played well and Russia fell short. It was the coach's decision not to field certain players.

Russia is the two time title holder and the defending champion of VNL. Russian blockings still impressive and some of it's key players did not play either on this match against Japan.
Japan used their Team B on this game. On 4th set I thought Russia will close the game but it's again the remarkable and exceptional Floor Defense of Japan who extended the match to the 5th and eventually win over Russia. looking forward for a rematch in the semi finals.

I had serious high blood pressure watching the match live lol. Russia made too much errors in the service line, in which Japan capitalized.
I’m not a fan of Otake but he did a great job using his heights. On top of that his tips were on point. Russia always failed to read when he’s tipping or spiking.
Otsuka did a great job hitting on the backcourt. He’s a bit too short for the Russians when hitting front court.

See THIS is what I've been saying! Japan have finally engaged their middles! Even if they aren't converting all the time they're being set more and it's giving the wings less of a block. Japan have ALWAYS been the best defenders on the planet no doubt and Fukuzawa has always been one of the only good point getters on the national team with Shimizu but now that they have the likes of Ishikawa and Nishida (who didn't even play this match!) as well as the ridiculously promising youngsters in Takahashi and Otsuka, and let's not discount arguably Japan's best player in Yanagida who isn't in the tournament this year. Now that Japan have that international level offence and three world class setters to run it, they're dangerous

Tough loss for Russia, I just know the coach would definitely make them pay, but great heart and consistency shown by the Japanese team. If Japan’s exceptional floor defense and passing would hold up when they finally faced powerhouses, USA, Poland, and Brazil, then they might really have a chance for gold here. And maybe even in Tokyo.
