"The Movie Database" does list Neil Patrick Harris in the cast as "Screaming Reaver (uncredited)"
I thought that was him.
I always thought that looked like NPH, but never dug into it.
That would be a great name for a metal band.
I'm going to have to watch the movie again just to see that! (Any excuse to watch Serenity really.)
I had never known anything about that until this moment. That is incredible!
When it cut back to River fighting the Reavers, you saw a Reaver rise up in slo-mo and "roar"... that was in fact Neil Patrick Harris, who Joss Whedon originally wanted to play Simon Tam but couldn't due to other commitments. When the chance to get in on an uncredited cameo in the movie came up, Harris jumped at it. Also, when the Operative gave the order to "stand down" and all the Alliance troops lowered their guns in unison, that actually was when the director yelled "cut" for that scene and all the extras just relaxed and the camera was still running and they liked it so much they kept it in. Lastly, back in the street scene, when River was talking seemingly jibberish and Jayne stated she was damaging his calm and went on about how everyone was dead for no reason... as the camera was spinning during his monologue, from one member of the crew to the other, the moment he said "they died for no apparent reason" it stopped on Wash - to which, shortly thereafter, for seemingly no good reason (and much to the collective gasp and wails of theaters full of Browncoats) Wash was abruptly and unceremoniously killed, with no time to react or mourn. Barely any time to process what just happened and for what reason Whedon opted to do it.
Some have speculated that Alan Tudyk was unable to commit to another movie or show (should this movie do well enough to green light them) so he and Whedon agreed to kill off the character. I also read an article sometime after the movie's release wherein an insider spoke of the friction between the Fox execs and Whedon during the original show and how, even still, they were adamant about killing the show but also NOT releasing the rights... AND these same people had been applying pressure to Whedon during the shows running to manufacture a love triangle between Wash, Zoe and Mal and Whedon flat refused. His stance was that Wash and Zoe were to have a happy, healthy, dedicated and loyal marriage and he allegedly told them "I will kill one of them off before I let you ruin this marriage." So, after Serenity, not knowing if the show would be brought back by Fox (since they had control) but without him, and fearing what they might do, Whedon ensured they would not tarnish that union.
Stupid studios. Even with the success of Buffy they couldn't just let him do the show/movie the way he wanted. Idiots
😂 That IS Neil Patrick Harris! I've seen this so many times and never, ever noticed that. That's cool he got to play a reaver and awesome that you even noticed it without having read about it first anywhere. I don't think I would have ever noticed.
I love how Jayne slides the bottle across the table to Simon, signifying that he finally accepts him as part of the crew.
"I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Summer Glau.
Gun Enthusiast Fact: The cannon the crew mounts to Serenity is a WW2 German 20mm Flak 38.
Basic Training Fact: Summer Glau trained intensely with the fight choreographers for three months before principal photography began.
Rebuilding Serenity Fact: According to Nathan Fillion, he personally supplied the blueprints used to build the ship set in the film after being informed at a production meeting that the originals had been lost. He was able to do so because, being so excited about being in the original show, he had taken photos of ALL the preproduction materials he had seen, including the blueprints.
I've met Summer Glau. I've got a video about it here at ruclips.net/video/xM1VJ309b0Q/видео.html Such a wonderful actress and a lovely person. Her acting at 31:36 was incredible.
a) Engineering fact: the ship is still TERRIBLY DESIGNED (all those ladders and walkways are useful for what? The cargo room only has a "garage room door", so filling that high cargo space through that small hole isnt going to work. They COULD HAVE done it much better ... even with that "general design".
b) Physics / common knowledge fact: Summer Glau training is commendable, but she would not have been able to beat up all the reavers/bar patrons in the fight, because her MASS is small and thus the IMPACT ON LARGER MASSES is not as shown in the movie ...
c) Material science fact: Teflon was invented "for space", because there is this nasty little problem of "two metal surfaces rubbing on each other = the oxide layer on both of them gets removed and they FUSE TOGETHER, thus eliminating any moveability". That gun would not have been able to turn much in space, because it was designed for "in atmosphere use".
Muck006 ...While I appreciate your enthusiastic reality check here, I'm more concerned with the filmmaking aspects. Most sci-fi doesn't make sense, thus the FICTION part.
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
Summer Glau is such an underrated actress.
Also great in The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Great reactions.
The Miranda storyline was supposed to be revealed at the end of season 2.
Book's death was helped gain a belief in something. Wasn't death was to show how deadly this mission was. It has been said that Ron and Alan were unable to commit to additional possible movies.
There are comic books/graphic novel to continue the story and reveal back stories. Book's back story is in A Shepherd's Tale.
There is also novels/audio books that tell more stories. The time frame is between the show and the movie.
Inara had a secret. She was dying. It is unfortunately we never got the chance to explore that storyline.
When Joss Whedon got the go ahead to do the movie he was hoping there would be sequels. He asked the cast if they could do more movies. Alan Tudyk and Ron Glass said they had other commitments and could only do the one movie. Shepherd Book and Wash had to die.
It's really a shame that so few reactors buy the DVDs and find out the hundreds of back stories that most Browncoats know. Book's life story is told in a hard bound comic called "A Shepherd's Tale" by Joss Whedon. He came from a broken family and had a very tough life in the ghetto and was never an operative. He was a high ranking Alliance Officer and was spying for the Browncoats.
It just occurred to me, that the Operative actually gave Mal his crazy idea.
He said, "You're not a Reaver, Mal." And Mal realized he wasn't - but he could pretend to be...and he ended the conversation to get started on his new plan.
One of my favorite bits is when Mal gives his "I aim to misbehave" speech, and Jayne is first to sign on. He takes a drink, quotes Shepherd Book (whom he really respected), and passed his drink to Simon - for the first time really treating him like a comrade in arms. The whole crew is united.
Zoe's "she's tore up plenty, but she'll fly true" isn't just about Serenity - it's about herself. She's compartmentalized Wash's death, and will live her life, honoring his memory but going on, there are still people she cares about.
When the images just popped up in River's mind, at random, they were sensory hallucinations that made her crazy. Once she saw the actual record she was able to put the images into perspective and realize that she was not crazy.
I've heard before, and truly believe, that the point of killing Wash ( such a beloved character) in such a random way was to make you feel like the whole crew Could Die in that fight. Because technically, you could have had a satisfying ending where they all got the word out, but died in that effort. Wash's death makes that (tragic) possibility more plausible.
I Love this movie and I loved your reaction. It's been a fun ride with you guys.
Cant stop the signal.
That shot on Miranda, with Mal talking to the crew,.with that heavenly light illuminating Mal's call to arms from his crew, it's always inspiring.
Also, "Leaf on the wind...."
I saw this in the theater, on the night of the premiere. When Derrial Book died, the theater was silent, aside from a few stifled sobs from audience members. When Hoban Washburn got killed, the whole crowd roared in outrage.
Re: the switch that flipped in River - if you recall, the doctor from the Academy said that the "neural stripping affects their reality." River had these extra memories she'd gained from reading members of Parliament, and, due to the neural stripping, she didn't have the ability to tell her own memories from the extra ones, and that's what was making her crazy. But once they saw the message from the recording, she was able to put it all in context, and it snapped her back to sanity.
Well, hypothetically speaking, a human brain doesn't have a mechanism of telling you "this memory isn't mine." If it were possible to implant another person's memories there, context is the only way to determine if they are your own. I don't think River is incapable of understanding which memories are foreign (for the most part), using the context of her own life history. But the neural stripping forces her to feel them as if they were.
I'll just add...HOLY !!! I must have watched this a dozen times at least, but never knew that was a known actor playing that Reaver. OMG! Thanks for pointing that out.
This is going to be great. This is going to be painful. This is going to be hilarious. This is going to be tragic. Thank you so so much for you guys doing this show on the channel! It’s been a great ride, and we’re ALWAYS happy to add another browncoat to the crew ❤
I think the shift in Mal's tone makes sense considering Book and Inara's departures. Book, as much as Mal disliked it and never accepted it, was his moral grounding. And Inara was someone he loved, and her leaving is like losing a loved one.
I saw this movie without ever knowing about the show - I was interested solely on the TV spots.
My best friend and I went to see this on opening weekend in what turned out to be a theater full of browncoats, and I'll never forget the cheer when those blast doors opened to show river surrounded by dead reavers
“I never felt the real impact of how scary those can be…” oh my sweet summer child, this is going to be a wild ride for you 😅
After multiple rewatches of both the show & the movie I've just realised something...! The overall story is bookended (not Book ended😢) by a loss of Faith. The pilot 'Serenity' opens with Mal losing his faith in both religion & authority when his superiors make the decision to pull out of Serenity Valley &, at the end of the movie 'Serenity' The Operative loses his faith in The Alliance when he's shown what they created in their plan to build a 'better world'! Probably not intentional... just found it interesting!
They had no intention whatsoever to kill Simon here, and he was vital to at least one planned future storyline.
They killed Book and Wash because the actors wouldn't have been available for an eventual sequel, while everyone else was.
I think River says, "I'm okay," after they watch the video because she knows now that all the terrible things in her mind are reality -- they're not some terrible nightmare that she conjured up by herself.
As she says earlier, it's not hers, and she shouldn't have to carry it. She can understand the memories now, and why she has them, and start to work toward healing.
She used to understand; now she comprehends
@@calebault8077well, I’m glad we made that distinction.
Are you going to watch the River Tam videos? I think you really should.
The outtakes/bloopers would be nice too.
We need you to react to the Firefly and Serenity bloopers! They're so much fun.
P.S. Wash getting killed gutted me when I saw it, and always hurts. He's one of my favorites, so that was a hugely painful death. I get it from a storytelling perspective, but it will always always be a gut punch to me. Oh, what could have been...
P.S. When you started talking about Reavers at the beginning before watching the movie, I started saying to my TV screen, "ZIP IT! DON'T TELL HIM ANYTHING! DON'T LET HIM EVEN ANTICIPATE!" 😆🤣 Lol.
FINALLY! Someone actually acknowledged that Mal's "quick draw" is a "hip shot"!
Everyone else always whines, "Why didn't he shoot him in the head?"!
It's like, he is going for SPEED over precision. (aka hit them BEFORE they can hit you)
It's all he can do to HIT his target at ALL! (much less aim for a specific part)
When Earth got used up, Santa had to find a new job. His elves were immortal, so Bernard had a lot of time on his hands. He upgraded his crystal ball to a bunch of video screens and changed his name.
Where do reavers clean their spears?
....
In the wash! 🤭
the obligatory traumatizing joke has been made, I can rest easy
And the mandatory reply, " Still TOO SOON!"
I've seen that gallows joke rendered so:
"How to Reavers clean their spears?
By running them through the Wash."
In the words of Alan Tudyk in a Knights Tale, “It’s called a LANCE, HELOOOO!”
I was looking for this and its "by putting them through the Wash"
Firefly has such great antagonists. I always get the feeling the Operative could be the "sane brother" of Jubal Early. They both are very determined to get their job done and do what's needed without just being straight out "evil". And they both follow their own inner believes and logic, as wrong or weird those might be.
For the movie, the relationship between Mal and Simon has slipped back towards more antagonism than understanding. I think it works though, because with both Book and Inara gone, Mal doesn't have anyone he can get advice from who isn't in his chain of command. Both Book and Inara were people he could talk stuff out with. Now things just fester...
if you want to see more of Summer Glau being a bad ass check out the terminator TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Yup 49:13, I sorta kinda side with the "don't like/compared to". OTOH, had I only seen the movie (w/o ever watching the series at all), the "en passant" killing off of Wash would just have been odd/shock value crude or whatever, instead of downright unacceptable. So for me it's not simply the shift in tone, but really & specifically the way our pilot was thrown tt wind AND right after that, the fact there's not a millisecond to process his hurried & undignified death.
As tt "yes, but it's a movie" thing, yeah.. so very true. All's perfectly understandable with that mantra. Doesn't go to any length tho, to make me like the movie more, AFTER I got to live/love this once in a lifetime series, which was one of the very few really shiny things in popular entertainment to come out of the US in post-modern times. Ty guys for your truly engrossing & fun ride aboard Serenity. Cheers from Amsterdam!
50:00 They killed Book and Wash because they couldn't commit to come back to the show. The show could now be able to proceed without them. The kills were unceremonious, but the effect was once Book then Wash were confirmed dead, when the rest started dropping, it made you feel maybe they were all going to sacrifice themselves.
Rumor is Disney owns Firefly, and they were teasing a reboot by featuring a Firefly easter egg in The Mandolorian.
The Operative was a believer.
Shepperd Book was a believer.
Had Book once been an operator, all he would need to do is change the focus of his belief.
I love this movie, but I _hate_ Mr. Universe. He feels too much like a plot device brought in to help write them out of a corner they wrote themselves into. And giving him the same treatment as Wash and Book at the end was honestly insulting.
The character of Mr Universe appeared a comic book story. He was an old friend of Wash who owed him a favor.
The set in the show was a complete ship just like the movie.
35:22 They were not real 30 Coins . That is a refrence. look up 30 silver.
You guys should watch the bloopers
Not sure if anyone said yet or not but you have GOT to watch all the outtakes from the show and movie.
Out of Gas:
Jayne -- "We'd have been back 1st, but there's something wrong with Inara's shuttle. She's done something to it, Mal. It smells funny."
Inara -- "I told you. It's incense."
Jayne -- "So you say."
Serenity (film):
Inara -- "And that's not incense."

Becca! We meet again, mysterious commenter on the Firefly and other universes! 😉
I love this movie and show - thanks so much for letting me come along for this ride. This does have a darker tone, but you have to remember that every crew member influenced Mal's direction. After Book and Inara left, he has no spiritual rudder left, so he became even more focused on survival things and less on morally right things - which leads to Book's last lines to him. So many good moments, and the show and the movie both just get deeper each time you watch them - there is just a ton of layers to this.
One of the best lines that never get mentioned was Mr. Universe's line after betraying the crew and just before dying was "gimme my 30 coin". There is a parallel here because 30 pieces of silver was what Judas was paid to betray Jesus. I can almost guarantee that Mr. Universe was not getting 30 pieces of anything - we have seen paper money, and I am sure there are electronic transfers, so I think that was a metaphor that he knew how much he betrayed the crew and who he was betraying them to. There can be more things spun off of this, but it sure makes a person think.
Which is why I love this show and movie. It makes you think. It is not passive entertainment or a fun story. It is Science Fiction at it's very, very best.
You put the Wash poster in the middle 😭😭😭 Also... I HAVE ALWAYS SAID THAT WAS NPR!!!! I fricken knew it! I'm so glad you said it bc I felt crazy
What made the Operative so dangerous was his belief that he was doing God's work and any atrocities committed to that end were acceptable. Mel destroyed that belief by forcing him to watch the recording from Miranda. He didn't just issue a stand down order; he provided the resources Serenity's crew need to repair her because he was forced to admit that they were the righteous ones.
I think the dark tone is fine overall, and it's a perfectly valid context to explore; fallen on hard times, desperation, etc...
But I do take issue specifically with the way Mal talks about Simon and River at the beginning. Simon (and now apparently River too) are officially members of the crew; and he might be gruff and tough with them, but he wouldn't speak to so callously to his crew like that (with respect to their standing and basic safety).
Remember that the movie, "Serenity" was going to be seen by people who hadn't seen the "Firefly" series. So a bit of sturm und drang with Simon was necessary.
probably the 3 most iconic actors to that of their character roles:
1. Blade is Wesley Snipes, and, Wesley Snipes is Blade
2. River Tam is Summer Glau
3. Alita is Rosa Salazar
I believe the Operative fell on his sword. He told Mal he would never see him again. And he failed. That's what you do when you fail.
Great catch on Neil Patrick Harris. I think you're the first ones to comment on it. Plus I had never heard before that Joss wanted him for Simon. Learned new things about the movie - nearly two decades later!
There are continuation comics and novels. The Shepherd's Tale will reveal much about Book's backstory. And I think there is one with the outcome of the Operative.
I'm so glad he didn't play Simon. He's a good actor but he wouldn't have been right for Simon. Our Simon was the right choice.
At this point, you realize the poster behind you of River is a mild spoiler.
Summer Glau later appeared with David Strathairn (Ashford, The Expanse) on the 2-season series Alphas on SyFy.
"I am to misbehave."
Book and Wash dying was because the studio execs wanted long term contracts for possible sequels, and Ron Glass couldn't sign long term because of his health, and Alan Tudyk was already in a longer contract elsewhere so he couldn't sign because of that.
Also, here's my best worst Firefly joke: How do the reavers clean their spears? They put it through the wash.
I'll see myself out, and head on straight to hell where I belong.
I liked Summer Glau in "The Sarah Connor Chronicles." A lot.
Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles-Series 1&2 reaction? It stars Summer Glau, many have enjoyed it.
Yes, Doogie Houser was the screaming Reaver. In fact, he was actually considered for the role of Dr. Simon Tam.
i do love that the operative calls mal on his gish galloping. *someone* needed to.
I have always wondered why the "Screaming Reaver" had a slow-motion moment. And I always wondered who it was as he looked so familiar, but the makeup made it hard for me to figure out. So now I know... NPH himself. How fitting.
Thank you for pointing that out.
I hope you guys react to the outtakes from the series and show
I'm ashamed to admit how many times I've fallen for the exploding incense trick....
There is more to the Firefly/Serenity 'verse in the form of comic books, novels, and role-playing games. Enjoy.
Just saw your Chernobyl reaction and i deeply recommend you watching „The Terror“ also with Jared Harris amazing show with many amazing actors!
I have no interest in reading the comics, so I had to come up with my own theory behind Book's history. My theory is that he was a predecessor of "The Operative." "The Opetative'" being willing to kill anyone, including kids, sent Book off to a monastery. This would explain his knowledge of crime, of the feds in The Message being out of place, and that The Operative is something Mal has never encountered, as he has personal knowledge.
I cannot say I like this film because of a few items. Wash. Mal's character change. The complete re-write of rescuing River, as Simon just paid people on the show. And the plot bs about the nerve cluster and how Mal conveniently had his moved. So, I consider this a close but alternate universe to the show.
And at the end, Zoe wears a slinky dress for Wash. 😢
The Unification War is an analogy for the American Civil War. Many bad things were done, but the history books all say it was necessary and good. Just as the Alliance says the was all good and necessary.
the important distinction is that the *alliance* is the pro-slavery side, and slavery most certainly did not "die out on its own" afterwards. the real civil war *was* if not entirely good, entirely necessary.
The Unification War is an analogy for the American Civil War. Many bad things were done, but the history books all say it was necessary and good.
It's true. And the winners write the history books. And sometimes, the losers want to whitewash the history too. It did start to put an end to a pretty ugly part of America's history, but we're still dealing with issues that stem from that era.
Hey bros, I didn't watch yet, but I wanted to say that over the last couple weeks I've watched your reactions to Training Day, Gladiator, and a few others, and when I realized I was near the end of your reactions to movies I like, I was very bummed! I hope you guys keep going with more good movie reactions. Cheers!
I have seen just about everything Joss has written. Wash and Book were expected. Not specifically but it is Joss's style. Off a fan favorite to shake up the universe. Buffy, Angel et al. It also fit into what I have read on their lack of availability for any future movies if filming was green lit right away.
I have a theory in the romance department. It is also right up Joss's alley. Opposites attract. I could really see, if the show had continued, River and Jayne getting together. The meat head and the svelte brainy assassin. But we may never know now.
Ah, yes, NPH is my favourite reaver (?)
Well, that is a very satisfying movie, even with all the loose ends. I'm still not over Wash's death =(
31:36 Serenity is a great movie. Star Wars meets The Transporter. I've met Jewel Staite and Summer Glau. A interplanetary government assassin is dispatched to hunt down and capture a mentally traumatized teenage girl who is hiding aboard a space pirate ship commanded by a disillusioned former galactic war veteran.
Neil Patrick Harris- entirely possible, however every time I see that moment, my mind goes straight to Burly the Troll from The 10th Kingdom (the oldest of the three troll kids) with dirt and blood on him.
River definitely knew beforehand that the Operative would call off the troops.
I want him to sing Dr Horrible in that makeup.
My kid and I used to sing some of those for the duo songs.
I love this movie. Got a 40something’ framed poster in the ManCave.
Wasn't that reaver in a popular sitcom called "How I Ate Your Mother"?
I never really thought about it. I do know that I saw him at the premiere after party, but I just put it down to him being friends with Alexis, and Ally, because this was when How I met Your Mother was on, and they were friends.
If you look into the graphic novels, they reveal that Zoe was pregnant when Wash died. And the novels also detail Book's backstory.
Shepherd Book's death was predictable exacly because of the old mentor trope that Sean talked about regarding Simon and River. It's a lot more obvious with the shepherd and the captain because Book is an old wise man and Mal is the protagonist of the story. It is part of the hero's journey.
The operative gave Mal the idea to disguise Serenity as a Reaver's ship, but Book gave Mal the reason to want to do it. Book helped Mal find his belief.
Wash's death on the other hand is pure Whedon. Shock value, nobody's safe Whedon-verse, that gives the main characters and the universe they live in a more real feel because it is heartless and cannot justify the departure of some of its best people. A little like our own universe.
The stance of River with the axe is almost similar as a wellknown portrayal of Buffy the Vampire Slayer....🤔
River with the axe and knife is the cover of my copy of the Limited edition Serenity blu-ray. although in a different pose.
There is a very believable fan theory that River is a slayer that also happened to be a genius and was interfered with by the alliance. She is very much a perfect weapon, built to kill monsters. I completely buy into it, in part because Joss did make a suggestion that all his shows exist in the same universe.
You can also watch other people's reactions to Firefly/Serenity. :)
Guys the Comics novels go into the history of Book. And Zoe. Among other things. All of them are overseen by Joss and from episodes that didn't go into production.
Sure looks like NPH!! Amazing catch!
Is it easy to take those portraits down off the wall? If so you missed a great opportunity: when Book dies, take his down and hand it to him. When Wash dies take his down and hand it to him. Then when River gets dragged away take hers down and hand it to him as well. Your friend will then be expecting both Zoë & Mal to die before the end.
I just did the math about the reavers and it terrifies me. They said 3 million people in the planet and a tenth of a percent became reavers. If my math is right that's 3000 people. 3000 people who terrify an entire universe. How truly brutal and barbaric the world have to be to to that can never be expressed in words
I'm face blind; I never ... Good catch! I envy people like you!
How do Reavers clean their spears? They run them through the Wash. :D Joke told by Nathan Fillion at one of the cons. :)
I love when the assassin says there are innocent people dying, and mal says you have no idea how true that is.... becasue the assassin is talking about his men, mal is talking about the reavers. Because the reavers were innocent until the alience changed them with the pax
I just realized this recently after nearly 20 years. Love this whole story.
Book and Wash only died because they could not immediately commit to multiple films. Doesn't really make much sense, but it is what it is.
39:30 The Reavers don't want you dead. Not yet, anyway. Remember what Zoe said in the first episode?
I mean... Shepherd Book's past has been told to us in the comic book The Shepherd's Tale. No need to speculate about it.
Notice the video playing that activated River was also playing in the bank where the heist took place but the screen was shot before it could activate River
Read your comments. There is a lot of interesting information. I also agree that you should watch behind the scenes and bloopers. Nathan Fillian is a nut.
If you guys want a good laugh, go back to the robbery at the first of the movie. At the point where River senses the reavers, freeze play at the point where River lands on her back. It seems to me that they could have afforded a cuter stunt double.
We have seen since Episode One that Malcolm Reynolds does not have the sense to know when to quit, and THAT is his superpower.
If you read the Book comic you can learn all about Shepards back story.
That Reaver is Neil Patrick Harris - great catch (I totally missed that!)
During post-production on this, there were rumors that Joss was so upset with studio demands, and tired of their meddling, that he decided to kill the entire crew, to put them out of their misery, so the studios couldn't f##k with them anymore. Somewhere about the time Simon gets wounded, everybody starts to believe it could be true.
When the hatch opens, River is holding a sword and a hunga-munga which is a Hindu throwing weapon.
I got to go to an advance screening - Serenity crashing was still just wireframes, and then it flicked back to finished and then Wash died. As it was only the second advance screening, not a single person in the audience was spoiled and we all gasped in shock. I then got to go to the first post Premiere showing, and took my sister, as it was her birthday. I’d not spoiled her, and she flat out screamed in horror at that point.
The main promise of the movie's studio was that, if it did well enough, they'd greenlight two additional movies to continue the story rather than revive the series. However, the actors had to commit to those films. Ron Glass and Alan Tudyk had other commitments and couldn't guarantee they'd be around for the next two movies had they happened, and so Joss Whedon opted to kill them off in this movie rather than leave uncertainty and have them written out between movies. He made good use of the deaths, particularly in making it feel like he could possibly kill everyone in the reaver battle or at least one or two more, but there wasn't any other particularly deep reason behind the deaths, i.e. tying into possible deaths over the course of the series. I think Whedon would have killed off characters only if they were done with the show and wanted/needed out if it had gone all seven or so seasons, up until the final season at least.
actually they had to rebuild the serenity. the cargo bay is noticeably different from the tv show.
Secret planet! Secret planet!
Through the reavers!
Secret, secret, secret, secret planet, yeah!
Sadly they never even got to finish the first season which would have gone deeper into the origins of Book and Inara, and why they were with the crew.
Maybe the Best end soliloquy ever. "Love keeps her in the air, makes her a home".
I think anyone would give everything they have to get a look like that from Morena Baccarin.
