      Tee it a little on the high side, take an inside swing path and hit it on the hard side. Adjust from there a little at a time.

    Playing off winter mats has forced me into castle tees. My balance is super-bad and I have recently had to stand more upright to stop me going on my toes (this was causing me to go over the top). Since standing more upright however, my trajectory has changed and I now hit the ball much higher (too high). To counter this I have dropped my club to 9.4 (will probably go to 9) and now using the white tees as I was also hitting off the top of the club. I have lost around 20 yards in length but I'm now much straighter and consistent and still hitting 260-270 yard drives. In fact I broke 80 for the first time ever on NYE and I play off 18! Super pleased you did a video on this James, many thanks. A few people were doubting my tee choice because it's not the industry norm.

    Tried this on Sunday. 18HC, driver my nemesis for 30 years lol, but I live with it. Anyway after using pink tee for last 5 years I bought a pack of orange ones for a quid. OMG What a difference it's not gone that much further but it's gone alot straighter. Of to Wales over the weekend playing Conwy, Nyten and Royal st David's and it's going to be orange tee for me. Great vid and great channel. 👍👍👍

    I used the white tees for years because I felt more in control. Getting older and looking for lost distance I tried hitting up with the pink ones but felt out of control ! Knowing I had to persevere I gave the orange ones a go but hit some great shots along with some horrors lol anyway getting to my point after a few rounds with the orange ones I went back to the pink ones and all the fear dropped away. Pinks are perfect now and I’m gaining distance gradually!

    Used an orange tee yesterday just because I found one in the first tee and had watched your video. Usually had used the shorter white tee. Difference was amazing. Didn’t sky one which was my fear. Didn’t hover the club as I struggle with that. Going to blow £2.50 on s full set of orange tees now. 😃😃

    As the brilliant Moe Norman said "Tee it way up there".
    One of the original golfers who started teeing the ball up high and also having the ball level with his lead foot on the driver, when everyone was still putting it just left of centre.
    He even said back then, it puts less spin on the ball, he may have been talking about side spin but either way, it's great to know how much he understood the golf swing.

    New duffer here, I just recently moved from a Taylormade R7 9.5deg (it was cheap and got me into golf!) to a Mizuno ST180 High Loft. With the R7 I was using a 3 1/4in tee as hig as I could get it, and STILL getting low-ish ball flights. Now with the Mizuno and a revised swing to counteract my slice I have had to lower the tee quite a bit. Now using "standard" 2 1/2in tees and getting straighter, higher ball flights even though I"m tee'd down quite a bit.

      I love my Mizuno 800... and the most pretty blue color. Down the middle every time...awesome driver. The Mizuno ST180 has adjustments, yes? Mine can be adjusted to effect a slice, a draw...the loft can be adjusted with little problem. I tee mine up where the top of the driver face is in the lower half of the ball on the tee. Same with my three wood which is an Adams Golf three wood. I stripped the old paint off my three wood and my "perfect club" and painted them an nice pretty blue to match my Mizuno 800.

    Except at 2:52 you are clearly addressing the ball at the ground and at 7:03 you are hovering at address. The bottom line is the need to get that strike point slightly above centre to maximise that launch and spin through gear effect (increased loft for launch and top spin counteraction). It's not simply a case of going for higher tees but finding the tee height that fits with your swing to find that strike. A lot of people are just going to end up with skymarks on their driver as they try and tee it up like a long drive pro.

Actually, here in Australia we only get to buy packets of mixed tees and the colour is all over the shop, not consistent. That said my feeling is that these step tees, as we call them, have their greatest benefit it making the ball at a consistent height.

  • @tonywestwell

    I tend to carry all 3 tees when I play, mainly for wind conditions, white for into wind, orange for down wind and pink for no wind or cross winds. This gives me lower ball flight into wind, higher ball flight with the wind and a better dispersion with no wind and cross winds. Great video though James. I do find the the orange tee sometimes problematic when I don't hit up, roofed a couple recently using the orange tee.

      I've got a quite a bit more distance than James here, also alot more height on my shots, and i've found a really great work around to wind, is to have Taylormade GAPR Mid in my bag, since i can easily outdistance my driver with it into the wind by holding the ball down, and i've noticed that GAPR low is the optimal tool for people in mid/high handicap for keeping the ball low into the wind. The GAPR Mid, has quite frankly replaced my 3 and 4 iron along with my 3 wood, because it is such a versatile club. But i can take it up 200-240 meters into the wind, where as my driver if i keep it low might be able to attain a little more distance, but with a significant loss of control.

    I use standard wooden tee pegs, measure the height by knuckles on my forefinger. So, driver, just out from the first joint (going from knuckles out), so about the same height as a white castle, 3 wood, just below last joint. Irons, either off the deck or just finger tip height. I find if I tee it up too high I ended skying it and losing distance. On the other hand, I also prefer the lower penetrating ball flight than something that comes down with ice on it, even if I lose a few yards, as I find I hit more fairways with it than trying to absolutely max out the distance, which is always an important consideration especially with tighter fairways.

      Right. Those "bad" shots may be the reason to sacrifice distance for accuracy and consistency. Excellent video. Like many, if not most, recreational players, I have trouble shallowing the club from the top of the backswing, which means trouble hitting “up” on the ball. If I tee it too high, I end up with a occasional “sky.” Looks like I have to go to the range and use a stall that has the highest rubber tee available (3”) and just hit the whole bucket (and then some) with the driver until I can work this out. My current “good” flight is a penetrating low fade, and in current soggy winter conditions, my drives aren’t even achieving 200 yards. 😭

    You have a beautiful swing. I have a question. Doesn't the height, carry and roll depend on the degree of loft that the driver has? I play with a Calloway Great Big Bertha with either a 9.5 or 10.5 loft (I don't remember...I'm OLD!!!) I am a 58 year old woman and I drive, with carry and roll about 170 to 190 yards, depending on how well I swing. I've noticed my golf girlfriend has a higher loft of about 12 or 12.5 on her Cobra driver and she hits it much higher in the air than me, but it doesn't go nearly as far. Having said that, I know balls are important, too. I am staunch on what balls I use - I use Callaway Supersofts and hit the living hell out of them. They are the only ball I use after years of trying lesser, i.e., Titleist, Bridgestone, Volvik, Callaway Solaire Women's balls (THEY SUCK) etc. balls (for my game). She will play anything when it comes to balls, while I know my Supersofts and refuse anything else.
    Please advise.

  • @donharrold1375
    @donharrold1375 6 лет назад

    Tee height is such an underestimated factor. Trying to hit the driver slightly above the centre with an upward blow is a virtual impossibility with a low tee. Nothing robs distance more than a strike low on the face of a Driver. Conversely I often see people teeing up irons too high. A little bit higher tee can work with a long iron or fairway wood, if the ball is forward in the stance so that you catch it slightly on the upswing, but catching it high on the club face of an iron with a downward blow is a total disaster.

    Could of done with some tips and guidance on selecting tee heights .I struggle with driver and playing about with heights and ball positioning .I like to see you hit shots and like your Yorkshire banter .but it.s not always about you lo

    Wouldn’t this depend on course and weather conditions? I change tee height depending on shot I want to hit. Low runner, tee in down. High floater hitting down wind, tee it high and let it fly!

    In all fairness a bad hit is just that and should have counted. Also I have heard that pros actually drive 1 to 2 degrees negative down at impact. Makes a difference in trajectory and total yards after carry.

  • @Coys1970

    Would it make a difference if you were using a 13° driver with an orange tee or is that too much loft with the higher tee?

    • @JamesRobinsonGolf
      @JamesRobinsonGolf  6 лет назад

      Totally depends on your attack angle mate

    • @Coys1970
      @Coys1970 6 лет назад

      So a good strike on the up won't just balloon with that amount of loft?

    • @JamesRobinsonGolf
      @JamesRobinsonGolf  6 лет назад

      Coys1970 yes mate it probably would. 13deg would be more suited to a downward strike downswing on other factors

      @@JamesRobinsonGolf If my swing speed is slower than yours, would i need more back spin to get the launch/height

    • @banditbaker1675
      @banditbaker1675 6 лет назад

      Yes Mark, the lower the swing speed the more spin you need to keep the Ball airborne.

    • @Reavix1
      @Reavix1 6 лет назад

      @@markbrook4697 it's a tug of war to control the spin, i swing at about 135 mph (Not joking) And my spin rates can go from the low 1000's to the low 4000's depending, on my form on the day in question. Best advice you can get is to go to a golf center/pro shop with a trackmaster, that can give you the numbers, so you can see where you go wrong/go right.

    I tee mine up where the top of the driver face is in the lower half of the ball on the tee. Same with my three wood...off a tee, the three wood face is equal to just under the half ball. I just use the typical white wooden or plastic tee. I think the game is difficult enough without all the numbers personally. The key to this game is to hit fairways and greens. I really do not care what it takes to achieve that result. Down the middle and on the green...that produces lower scores.

    Why is the smash factor 1.49 for all 3 tee heights? So the difference in distance was strictly about spin? Thanks

  • @nickpritchard7130
    @nickpritchard7130 5 лет назад

    Good vid however the mishits should be counted as the data is inaccurate without them. The higher the TEE the more mishits will occur as most people change their swings with a driver when the ball is tee,d up high. Yes there is more distance but less accuracy, which equals a higher score at the end of the day. I play off 5.4 and have tried different Tee heights. The High tee,s go a little further but hitting the desired club face position each time is more difficult. cheers and good job James..

    why oh why don't they make a castle tee between the pink and orange at 2 and a half inches? my own experimenting shows that as best for me.

      I either push the pink further into the ground or leave the white sticking up a small amount.

    I use my wooden tees and always put them just in the groud so they don't fall over with my driver that's how I make sure I tee it up the same height on every shot
