We usually _think_ of it as only physical pain, but what if what we're _really_ laughing at is the twinge of anger or embarrassment that the subject gets when receiving physical pain? After all, if they hurt themselves on purpose, they're still feeling the physical pain, but we no longer get any sense of emotional turbulence, so the schadenfreude just isn't there. Of course, this is all assuming that the pain we're witnessing isn't too severe in the first place -- that's often where empathy takes over... at least when we see it in person. The actual answer is undoubtedly complex, and whatever it is, it's at least clear that it's often futile to invoke schadenfreude deliberately. Even when part of comedy routines, it only works if the pain is believably unintentional on the part of the recipient.
yep, BUT is it sad i consider this also a to me shot in the foot for my goat nature. like compared to my friends i am often far to carful for anything like this to exist but ya. im not gonna lie this was a nice breaf momoent away from my internal hell of the fact im sometimes like a fucking slab of dimond THAT PURE. like coffin sized slab. ya im wishing i could burry my self for the time because i have bashed my head perverbialy to hard with people.
2:20 I love how you can hear his footsteps getting faster after he goes off screen to show that he started running away, and his voice becomes more high pitched and drawn out to show he started screaming. The attention to detail is great

if you tried to stretch this out to movie length you would find the charm wearing off by about 25 mins in. the reason these shorts are so good is because they are short and the team spent many weeks and likely months on this small time frame to make it perfect. it's neither one is easy to do, short or ~2 hour length and every time frame between them. either you spend all your resources on a small time frame or you spread it out. very rarely can you have both long length and high quality.
Well then, from a lore perspective: Some duplicant personalities have certain triggers that seem to cause them to go... well, *i n s a n e* . And apparently in the dark twist of it all, if one of these duplicants happen to get destroyed or disposed of because of a mental disfunction, they simply print a new one. While the video is fun to watch, the lore implication is definitely a little messed up. 😅
The most important part is what happened at the end. The "First trio" of duplicants realized that any "new Ari" to be printed would also have the same potential to go insane, so they choose to take caution into avoiding those triggers that started Ari#1 fast descent into madness. For the sake of the colony, now each one of them writes a personal diary, including in it their deepest fears, obsessions & "strange ideas" (plus whatever things they may have discovered/suspect on the other duplicants). A transcript of this diaries must be uploaded in the supercomputer once every few cycles [each one locked away from other duplicants with a low level encription based on their DNA that can only be bypassed after 100 cycles with no new entries]. New duplicants of the same type (like the two Ari) can read & write each others entries at any moment (if they want). -> This is discouraged [cognitohazard].

Absolutely hilarious! Reminds me of the many times my dupes would try to commit suicide by walling themselves off somewhere inhospitable or somehow get themselves entombed in a random piece of terrain. It's not a bug; it's a feature. ;)

Mini-story time. I started to play this game during Oil-Automation Upgrade (like, I just bought the game and Automation patch was released, it was somewhere in November 2017 I think?), and in my first successful (the one that lived more than 100 cycles, RIP to other two before that) colony there were one Ari. And this Ari was goshdarn MVP of the playthrough. They were the best builder, digger, researcher AND farmer. Need something to build ASAP? Ari will do it in no time. This other dupe is about to suffocate cause they trapped themselves? Don't worry! Ari on their way already! Others don't think fast enough to research the thing that'll probably save the colony? Good thing Ari have such high learning skill! (I think it was their original job btw, but don't really remember). This one Ari saved other dupes so much times that me and my friend (to whom I streamed the whole thing) started to call them The Boss. The Boss then became a colony-saver in all next playthroughs as well, and to this very day each time Ari don't spawn within first 9 cycles, it's usually Really Bad Omen™. So seeing this animatic, where Ari just trying their best to cheer everyone up but ends up being forgotten in space, is heartbreaking to me. Thank you, Klei, for making such a wonderful game and no less wonderful animatics.
These shorts are one of the main things that separate klei from other companies. Honestly these are just great and you can tell they were made for fun.
Imagine being one of game companies that doesn't disappoint nor try to milk their players and don't have thousands of law suits, yet making things like that just because they can and boy oh boy they do it well. I haven't felt disappointed once by you guys. Thank you!
Imagine if there was a “hard” mode where some duplicates could have the “defective” status effect in the blueprint pod where certain things in the world could trigger them and make them uncontrollable to the player and cause massive stress to other duplicates

Imagine being one of game companies that doesn't disappoint nor try to milk their players and don't have thousands of law suits, yet making things like that just because they can and boy oh boy they do it well. I haven't felt disappointed once by you guys. Thank you!

Imagine if there was a “hard” mode where some duplicates could have the “defective” status effect in the blueprint pod where certain things in the world could trigger them and make them uncontrollable to the player and cause massive stress to other duplicates

I'd love to see animations exploring their relationships according to the lore. Like how Bubbles absolutely despises Banhi. That'd be fun.
They ended up becoming best friends in the end, if you read the log to completion.
I've never commented on klei's videos but I made a point of commenting now because this animated video made me laugh (no dialogue needed to understand the gestures of each action) congratulations klei for the great success of this wonderful game, gratitude ps: waiting for new ones DLC, don't abandon this game ;)
i may be a bit late to the ONI train, but i could do a 20 minute analysis of Ari on just these 3 minutes.
Honestly sometimes this animation is so true. Every now and again i have a dupe that just wants to find any way to hurt/kill itself.

The amount of love and talent that clearly goes into these is why Klei is easily my favorite studio (and why I love ONI despite me sucking)
I would watch an hour of those outro shots it's like watching fully functioning colony through security cameras.
I love the idea that the Super Hard Digging and Super Duper Hard Digging skills simply mean the dupe has figured out how to flick the switch up a notch on the diggy zappy thingy.
This is a good representation of how you cant force laughter, it only comes naturally

Just so you know the actual game, while the "animation" is cute, is nothing like it is in the short. With that said it is a fun game and can get addicting.
