  • Today I want to talk about dark spots and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation….specifically this old thing on my cheek, and how I’ve managed to fade it quite significantly in the last couple of weeks!
If you follow me on instagram, you would’ve seen some of m y journey with this aggressive under the skin spot that….i picked. I aggravated the inflammation further and its left me with a nasty dark spot.
So before I get into what I’ve been doing, less talk a bit about post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, that I’m going to refer to as PIH from now on, occurs after injury and as the name suggests, after the skin has been inflamed,
This triggers melanin-producing cells (whose name I can’t pronounce, to release excessive pigment, leading to a darkening of the inflamed / injured skin and can remain on the skin from anything between 3 - 24 months, depending on factors like skin colour and the type of injury or inflammation.
The most common type of inflammation we see on our own skin is of course spots and acne. Especially when we pick at the spots, and aggravating the inflammation further!
These often leave dark flat spots on our skin that often appear dark brown or grey.
PIH isn’t dangerous in anyway and doesn’t need curing or fixing as it does eventually go away on its own, again in the space of 3-24 months. So you can just leave it alone and it will eventually go.
However, if like me, you’ve picked a nasty spot and you don’t quite think the massive dark spot on your cheeks suits you….or your career is based on that state of your skin, there are certain things you can do to speed up the process of removing the PIH.
You can of course go to a dermatologist and get a chemical peel, I had a mild one before this dark spot and found it to be very effective. And a course of laser treatments will help to speed up the process…HOWEVER….who has the money?! Not me.
So i hope this video can shed sopme light on how you can fade, get rid of and reduce the appearance of dark spots, acne scaring and pigmentation FAST!

My problem is when my acne scars start to fade, a new pimple will pop on the same spot! So that will become a new acne scar 😩 it never ends
Update: my skin is getting better, tho i still get hormonal breakouts 😒 1-2 angry pimple. Morning routine is wash with water only, no cleanser (but i make sure i wash all the nasties at night) Then apply hydrating toner, BHA and Klair's midnight Cream (holy grail!). at night i just add a cleanser in my routine, then same routine. When going out i just swap the BHA to an anti aging serum to make my skin plump. Hope this helps someone going through a bad breakout. We can do this! 👊

I fade dark spots in 2-3 weeks for ~$25 for a few months supply. I get alpha arbutin, niacinamide + zinc, and the azaleic acid lotion from the Ordinary, and I use it every evening on my entire face.
It used to take months for a new dark spot to fade, and my darker skin tone means hyperpigmentation comes easily, so these products have definitely made a difference for me :)

*Btw guys what he had wasnt a pimp it was a boil, people often confuse the two. A mutiple headed boil is called a Carbuncle. How To tell the difference is pimple are soft, small, squishy, always have a head and pop easily. Boils are hard, tend to grow bigger, most of the time start off without a head and won't pop, and then once it comes to a head once popped don't have a "satisfying" burst and may slowly leak and the bump won't go away everytime when you pop it ..if it even pops. Same with a carbuncle, only difference is that it will have a bunch of different heads.*
Pimples come with puberty or in adulthood due to a hormonal imbalance in adults and the main cause of pimples is that your hormones go crazy which raises your androgens, with your androgen levels higher you will have a higher production of sebum (the oil that comes from your pores/hair folicles). The sebum over production due to the excess of androgens in your body happen so often that it gets clogged up in your pores faster than you normally wash it away. As the oils clog up and harden in your pores it traps bacteria in your pores (think of it like the bacteria gets trapped in the oil and brought into your now very open pores. The bacteria causes an inflammatory response in your body which your white blood cells come and attack hence the pus and pimple appearing in the pore. When it's black heads or white heads it's just the accumulation of the oil mixed with dirt, debris, deadskinCells and not the bacteria, hence no pimple!!
That's why the way to keep your pimples and acne under control when you're a teen or an adult with hormonal acne is to Constantly wash your face, be prescribe topical treatments which both keep your oil production at bay while also fighting bacteria that's prone to be on your skin etc.
Now with boil prone skin a person who frequently gets boils and carbuncles which they confuse for a big pimple and acne that is a person who is prone to Staph and a boil is essentially a Staph infection. Staph lives mostly in your nose hence why is it harder to get rid of all together and transfer back onto your skin with everything you touch frequently (pillows, bedding, your phone etc.) Being prone to Staph does NOT mean that your dirty by any means. Much like the bacteria that causes acne it is impossible to eradicate but can only be kept at bay by constant skin care.
Staph bacteria that transfers onto your skin gets into your pores and goes deep into the deeper layers of your skin hence why it has a harder appearance than acne, doesn't have a head right away and doesn't pop often even when "popped" because it gets so deep down into the skin.
    Hope this helps ❤️

Just what I needed!!! Been dealing with a sudden outbreak of acne on my cheeks for the past few months. I wanted to get The Ordinary's Niacinamide but I think Arbutin and Transzemic Acid is more suitable for me.
5% Benzoyl Peroxide has been tackling my angry pimples really well. I feel like my skin is very stubborn. I have a PHA mixed with niacinamide but it hasn't been responding to the product at all. I recently put The Ordinary 10% Lactic Acid in and it made a huge difference. Did not have any bad reaction to it even though it is a higher concentrate. I might try not mixing the PHA right after or use it in the morning only.
I'm still on the hunt for a good cleanser though. Currently using Innisfree Olive Cleanser, it isn't heavy but maybe not suitable for my skin. I want something slightly stronger 😂
Edit: have used Some By Mi cica spot treatment and Cosrx aha and bha toner which didn't do alot for me. Exfoilate twice a week with The Cure.

I love how you say that dark spots aren't a problem and it's just cosmetic. People always say that I'm suffering from acne or hyperpigmentation and although that's true to some extent, I. E. Confidence is knocked, you feel body conscious, people might not look you in the eye etc. However, I don't think using language like suffering, or saying terrible helps these things. In fact it makes people more stressed about their skin (which can ofc can trigger more acne) and also demonises essentially stuff ur skin is just going to do. I feel as if by normalising acne, people will feel more okay with themselves (also lessen skin related stresses which in turn can help their skin) and also obviously combat commercialisation and capitalism.
Anyway irrelevant rant over but I just wanted to say it's refreshing to see someone phrase skincare language in more objective terms rather than sounding like they're going to war with their skin especially when even the dermatologists use negative terminalogy.
    Much love xxx

Thank you for the shout out for sunscreen! And you are so right - if someone thinks they hate the feel, they should check out items from Korea and Japan. I use Etude Sunprise. Less than $10 and it sinks in so fast.
