In today's video, we dive deep into the worst beauty videos we've seen on TikTok! From questionable skincare routines to outright misleading claims, it's time to set the record straight.
Clean Beauty Myths: Water as the Villain? -
We start with a common claim from the clean beauty movement: the idea that water in skincare is a "filler" ingredient. Spoiler: there’s no such thing as a filler ingredient! Water is essential to dissolve and mix ingredients, and many raw materials come in powdered form, which needs water. Sure, waterless skincare might be lighter to ship, but the idea that it's inherently better is far from the truth.
Dr. Daniel Barrett & TikTok’s Skincare Misinformation -
Dr. Daniel Barrett, a plastic surgeon, has been making frequent appearances in tis series! While I respect his skills as a surgeon, his understanding of skincare science is seriously lacking!
Influencers Pushing Lies for Commissions -
We’ve all seen them: influencers selling anything and everything for TikTok shop commissions, often using the most absurd stories to push their products. They don't even use the products half the time! This kind of hustle is short-sighted and comes across as disingenuous.
    The “Glass Skin” Misunderstanding -
Let’s talk about one of the biggest TikTok skincare trends: “glass skin.” Many influencers think it’s all about looking shiny on camera, but true glass skin involves a combination of hydration, even skin tone, smooth texture, and proper moisturization. It’s not just about slathering on thick moisturizers and using a ring light for that dewy glow.
TikTok is filled with questionable beauty advice, but I believe we’re all too educated to fall for the nonsense now. Remember: if someone’s constantly trying to sell you a product, especially with dubious claims, be cautious.
If you enjoyed this video, don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more content like this! And as always, share your thoughts and experiences with these TikTok beauty trends in the comments below.

I can help you with the analogy for the surgeon not knowing sh*t about skincare: I'm a trained pianist as such I can call myself musician. My bf is a trained trombone player as such he calls himself a musician. I don't know sh*t about trombones, neither does he about pianos

    • @oOVanillaMelOo
      @oOVanillaMelOo 2 месяца назад +86

This is such a great analogy! Often since a lot of people don't understand most science fields, they just group them all together and if you are in any science field you are thought to know about all of them. But Noooooo!! I study biology and the first thing I realized is that even within the umbrella of biology, there is sooooo many people that are specialized and do not know much about the other fields. A microbiologist will not be able to give you much answers on plant biology and even within the microbiology sphere, they could still know only about one specific specie. Science is an behemoth of knowledge and nobody can know all of it.
All of that to say that your analogy with musical instruments is perfect to help people understand this!

True, but ANY doctor should have a basic grasp of organic chemistry that can't be debunked by someone who last saw a chemical equation in grade 12.
Piano and Trombone are different instruments, but neither of you is going on the internet saying no symphony should have a minor chord because they're ✨toxic✨

@@squash6497 The point of analogy is not to take it literally I think. I've never said my profession has the same consequences for public safety.
P.S. Also knowing one minor chord (or having a basic knowledge of how harmony works) wouldn't make you a composer for an entire symphony pretty much like knowing one chemical equation (or having a basic understanding of chemical reactions) wouldn't make you a chemist for an entire formula of a product.

Folks also have no idea how the healthcare system works here in the States, it’s the dang insurance companies and political lobbying that make it complicated- but insurance carriers aren’t out there posting BS. They have PR and legal departments 🤣

Where I live doctors have insane work loads, and when they don't have enough time per patient, and are constantly overworked and tired, mistakes happen. Sometimes those mistakes can be dangerous to patients. It benefits everyone when doctors get adequate pay and rest and are able to focus on their jobs.
That being said, every single profession has people who are good at it and people who are bad at it, not trying to dismiss anyone's bad experiences, I know I've had some that left me feeling less than confident in the doctor I visited.

You should look up the founder of Chiropractics, Daniel David Palmer. He was without a doubt a quack, and it perfectly explains why chiropractics is the way it is today.
Palmer started as a 'magnetic healer' and his first chiropractic adjustment 'healed a man, who was partially deaf, through a spinal adjustment'.

If it doesn’t work on their skin fair enough, just get mineral sunscreen.

Everything from diet, nutrition, supplements, food additives to avoid, ingredients in skin care, hair care, household cleaners, etc. His advice (and this is one of the top Professors in the field of my particular type of cancer) was basically just try and eat a balanced diet, get some exercise a few times a week if you can, work on reducing stress levels, try and get a good night's sleep, use common sense when it comes to things like Covid and other viral or infectious risks, wear sunscreen, and essentially don't get sucked in by fear mongering when the evidence just isn't there.

I can’t get into the whole glass skin thing, either. I’ve got mild rosacea on my cheeks, so if I’m rocking shiny skin, I just look flushed & sweaty, like I just ran several miles. And I live with a dog & two cats who shed PILES of hair, all year round, so I need to keep my skincare as matte as possible, or I’ll be picking dog & cat hair off my face within 2mins of application😭

So true about ”glass skin”! I am in these skin care and tretinoin forums online, right, and regularly there are these people showing their ”new glass skin” compared to their old, supposedly dull skin. The ”dull” skin pic is taken with nothing on the skin in normal or even dark:ish lightning with mouth turning down. Then there is this ”after” pic taken in bright, but warm lightning and with their skin smeared in whatever shiny, goopy serum or lotion. That is their ”new glass skin”. And people go ”aaaah, oooh, the results!”. 😩

The sunscreen ingredients in makeup is probably those foundations that have spf built in (though it’s barely any).

@flowerpower3618 Completely understand your point! I live in the UK myself, so I wasn't commenting on the tan (spf doesn't prevent getting a tan) or the pinkish hue, but on the fact that his skin looks sun-damaged. Also because he clearly doesn't understand how spf works yet still gives advice on it 😌

This is why I love this channel. James finally simplifies the problems with, “doing your own research” and how to find the right people for advice.
He also emphasizes how important it is to understand what you’re reading. For example, I only use NSF rated collagen for a supplement. Now, if I didn’t read up on what the certificate meant I might of thought it was to judge the effectiveness of the product…NO! It only means that the product contains what it says it does, that’s it.
I love how James is so popular and actually seeks out the experts to discuss beauty products❤

Your comments on research methods are so spot-on that I’m going to show them to my class! College students use Google instead of academic databases because it’s so much easier, and many teachers actually recommend reading the abstract and conclusion only to judge a study. That’s fine if your goal is simply to evaluate if the study is relevant, but tragically you do indeed have to read the whole thing if you actually want to understand it.

I'm glad people are becoming more aware of skincare and use of sunscreen (myself included). Solariums and tanning beds have been banned from commercial use here in Australia because skin cancer is so prevalent here. There have been national campaigns since I was young highlighting the use of properly tested sunscreen to combat this so it's quite baffling to watch people in this video concocting their own fake sunscreens. At first I thought you were going to discuss that influencers were avoiding water in skincare because they fear that deadly di-hydrogen monoxide hahah

you know what I noticed abt that first cream? it has maltodextrin. which is known to trigger inflammatory autoimmune conditions. I can't have one of my fave drinks, monster, anymore bc it has maltodextrin and I have probable celiac. and lots of maltodextrin is made from wheat. ahaha. if that cream got in my mouth (which sometimes happens with skin care bc its goin on yr face!) id probably have bloating, diarrhea, and mood instability for at leasta few hrs and have no idea what caused it.

I was working in chemical company for a brief moment, my role was to mix powders in a professional chemical mixers. Mixing powders took from 1 hour to many hours alone. Not to mention making emutions, water ot fat based, is equally long and complicated. Emulsifying whatever cosmetics home with a spoon for one minute is not only unhygienic, but also the slurry you produced is not properly mixed. This may lead to differences in the end product concentrations of your active ingredients (if they are even active anymore bc I assume you dont have a proper chemical equippment and wrong transportation may destroy thes ingredients), but also it may create a pockets of highly concentrated substances causing irritations or in some cases chemical burns.
