honestly the true power of that chip shines through when it's not being used for midi playback, and when held in the hands of someone that definitely knows their way around FM synths they can make some honestly impressive stuff that IMHO can beat sample usage sometimes
tl;dr: it's good when used as Yamaha originally intended
