This is another DOCTOR REACTS video watching Futurama. Your response to my first reaction video was amazing! What better next episode to do than one all about flying brains making everyone stupid. This is "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid" and we get to think about the difference between the brain and the mind, what intelligence is, how we learn and some famous people from history and whether they had mental illness.

As a teacher to be I have been confronted with "what is intelligence" quite a bit and what my takeaway is so far is "ability to deal with unfamiliar problems"
This adaptability and creativity you need for issues you haven't trained for is what makes up intelligence for me.

Kuru 🧠🍽️ It was actually used in a horror movie made in the last decade about a family of cannibals. The doctor misdiagnosed the mother (1st to die) with Parkinson's due to the similarity in presentation, & since he was looking for horses instead of zebras.
I first heard of it in The Book of Eli! Took me a second to remember what it was called beyond “wasn’t it something that started with a k”, but I got there ☺️

Funny story piggybacking off of you bringing it up around the five thirty mark but I am mute and did actually get called "dumb" by a doctor once. She had to hurry and explain when she saw my shocked expression.

I've never even tried to count sheep.
But what (not allway though) works for me is playing categories in my head and then going through the alphabet. Sometimes adapting the rules like "one term per letter" or "as many terms per latter I can think of".
As an entomologist/arachnologist, my categories would often be inspired by that. Like "scientific name of a butterfly", "insect of colur xy"....
Saved me from lots of bad ruminating.

Why Fry's brain is the way it is gets explained in 'Roswell that ends well' and well you really don't want to know.
We also see the Brain spawn again in the Why of Fry. Though that episode is more about Fry's pupose than his psychology.
The Sting would be a good one as it involves dealing with Loss and self blame as Leela grieves.
Or there's Game of Tones when Fry has to re live his last day before he was frozen having lived in denial of what he lost coming to the future.

Just a note on the power of attorney thing - it wasn't until i worked in healthcare that I realised that if a person loses capacity their next of kin cannot just take over making decisions for them. If there is no LPA it comes down to the medical team treating the patient to make decisions about their care - even if the family/next of kin believe it would be against the person's wishes, if those treating them believe it is best for them then they choose to do it. So I definitely think Elliot is right is saying everyone should have one in place!

Excellent episode, I've always thought intelligence like this, the ability to adapt to new problems and understand solutions AND be able to explain complex ideas to anyone, even a child.
The interesting questions that stuck with me through this episode:
1.) Is there a fifference between the mind (concept) and the brain (organ). And does it matter? From a therapist perspective it matterns in terms of educating a client on a mental health disorder like schizophrenia or OCD, or a neurological problem like MS or a stroke. Same organ, different approaches. Clients with mental health issues or disabilities often feel so tied to their thoughts and impulses and under the control of their brain that theres no difference. But we're not creating a disconnect in brain an thoughts but in the self concept and thoughts. Which brings me to a question:
To what extend is the self part of the mind and/ or the brain. Because yes, lot of our personality and self is generally considered in the pre-frontal cortex. But our way to talk, our sense of visual aesthetic is mostly not, but isn't that part of one self? So with brain damage like tumors or lobotomies there is a difference in personality, that I would say does matter, in terms of do we treat a brain or a mind. But it gets a whole new perspective in cases like the monk music fan described by oliver sacks.
2.) For the question at the end: Kreutzfeld Jakob i would guess. I am not sure if theres a newer definition/ coding for that?
There is a difference between the "brain" and the "mind" I see it as roughly analogic to a tv vs a movie playing on that tv.
Almost every writer on Futurama had some kind of doctorate they were pure geniuses one of my favorite shows and even I didn't get half the jokes and that's why I appreciated the show 😅 so many jokes went over the average viewer
I'd highly recommend the season 4 episode 'The Sting' where Leela is suffering from intense grief which leads to insomnia and begins to lose her grip on reality. Plenty to explore there, I'm sure!
This was a lot of fun! "I'm a gigantic brain!" followed by everyone's offense is one of my favorite bits in the show for some reason.
As a layman, my concept of the difference between the brain and the mind has always been kinda like hardware vs software. Processor vs process.
I think the brain and mind are somewhat mostly synonymous. However, if I had to define them separately, I would use the term brain to describe the physical aspect and mind relating to more abstract concepts.
Example: The doctor removed a part of the brain during surgery. The meditation was so deep, my mind was clear.
Wasn't that Kreuzfeld-Jacob (or the "shakes", like Michael Gambon had in Book of Eli)
Also, I had a fun conversation with a Philosophy major about the whole concept of "mind" and how that word is impossible to translate to Dutch since we only differentiate between the physical and mental parts of people; with your mental part (personality, memories, etc) being housed in the physical brain (this is of course oversimplified, we were contemplating the concept for a couple hours of course)
I would say intelligence is the ability to use abstract concepts in pursuit of a goal.

To me the mind is consciousness, the space in which all mental activities take place. everything we experience occurs within the space of consciousness including thoughts, emotions, sensations, perceptions, memories etc. Those all make up the brain. To me that's the difference. The mind is consciousness the brain is the contents of consciousness.

This is probably so random but the show “Young Royals” has just came to an end a week ago.Its a pretty diverse series showing different various of ethnicities,sexualities and mental issues & health in teens. It also includes things like class discrimination and different kinds of relationships in society.Its a pretty well written show mainly portraying a young crown prince’s story.Its definitely worth it!Just a recommendation.

Hopefully won’t be the case for BSE and vCJD, or we’ll potentially be seeing new cases of vCJD in about 20 years).

To me intelligence is the ability to absorb information either through experience or otherwise, and to draw links, deductions and inferences that are at least somewhat reasonable.
I think there's a difference between the capacity to learn and grow and willingness to do it. If someone is not interested in absorbing information, then they may stunt intellect.
My favorite cartoon Dr is also from the Simpsons, Dr Hibbard!! He laughs just like my dad, both style & timing. ❤

Coming from an IT background (programmer) I’ve always thought of the Brain as the hardware (HW) and the Mind as the software (OS maybe or a suite of applications) running on the HW.
Evidently I’m wrong.

Imo, intelligence is based on the flexibility in learning to your best ability. Like, knowing that no one can fully understand everything, being confident in what you do know, while also being open and flexible to change your opinion when presented with new information.
Furthermore, to the best of one's abilities, applying the knowledge in everyday life. (Like, I read a lot of parenting articles to be well informed to put into practice to be a great parent, but with my own ACE, it's not always the easiest to put them into practice and stay consistent.) I don't think things need to be perfect, but I think the attempt is important, because we learn by doing too.

Pretty sure the prion disease caused specifically by cannabalism is called Kuru since Creutzfeldt-jakob can happen spontaneously via mutation and other things... I think. Been a while since I've had to read anything about prion proteins and the diseases they can cause so I could be way off here. Anyways, love your videos!
I know so many intelligent people that have the emotional intelligence of a baby. They are the smart dummies. Wisdom is the combination of the 2 and patience.
What did you diagnose yourself with
I say Intelligence relates to the capacity to use retained knowledge to achieve the goal of solving a problem VS wisdom which is understanding WHY one would take certain actions and what COULD happen as consequence of action or inaction. Also the foresight or seeing into one's knowledge base to judge what the problem actually is and whether or not it actually IS a problem.
A lot of people might try to logic their way out of a perceived "problem" but the problem was something only in their own mind made worse whereas wisdom would have told them there was no problem to fix or was no capability of being solved, so don't waste your energy and limited time.

Intelligence is so tricky because who is doing the measuring, why is it being measured, what is valued as 'productive' intelligence, when are you being measured for your intelligence...(don't ask me at 3pm any questions for example. I've had a lunch and I'm tired and I've probably already done an 8 hour shift).(please don't judge me one time after night shift I tried to use my swipe card to get into my own house).
I've just done a paper for my msc on animal intelligence, whether it can be defined, measured, and is it desirable. My definition I settled with is the ability to take in and process information and apply it appropriately to a situation

My understanding of intelligence is "mental aptitude," i.e. the ability to quickly learn how to understand and/or do things. Often, though, I think we fall into the trap of seeing someone who is highly knowledgeable/skilled in one area, calling them "intelligent," and generalizing that to assume this means they're knowledgeable/skilled in everything. Maybe it's the halo effect.
Since people can have more aptitude in one area than others, I think there are different kinds of intelligence. The one we measure in IQ tests, I guess, is aptitude for logical/analytical reasoning, which is only one of many things that influence how quickly someone can learn. Taking myself as an example, I'm very good at tests for logical/analytical reasoning, but I have ADHD, which impairs my working memory. I think this makes me much less good at taking in a lot of new information fast, especially if it's arbitrary information. So when I'm trying to learn a new language, I pick up on the grammar really fast, but I'm very slow at picking up on new vocabulary words.
I, personally, view intelligence as a sort of spectrum, similar to Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some will be very intelligent in one area but not in another, in other words I feel intelligence is contextual. Being able to recognize patterns and use them to your benefit, but people are better at recognizing the patterns in some contexts than others and are better at knowing what to do with the pattern before them.

Essentially, the brain is hardware while the mind is software.
Personally I favor Zoltan Dienes's Cold Control Theory of hypnosis. To really oversimplify it, it's action in the absence of higher order thoughts.
Hypnosis definitely isn't a state. The old concept of trance isn't backed up by any research since the 80s or so. Irving Kirsch found that leaving out the hypnotic induction had almost no effect (less than 10% difference, if i recall correctly). And of course the Carleton Skills Training Program research showed that hypnosis is really little different from just imagining something, except that hypnosis is done with less conscious thought.

Pre watch response - Intelligence to me refers to your innate ability in different subjects. Often we will just think of things like math and science when we refer to intelligence, but there is emotional intelligence, musical, artistic, verbal. Someone can have high and low intelligence in any of these. Maybe when we label someone as "intelligent" it's because they are high in multiple areas. I think intelligence is what you start out with, and then you build upon that. It's like your baseline.

Intelligence to me is literally just curiosity intertwined with empathy. Do you have a desire to learn as much as possible about things, events, people,etc or are you a willfully ignorant, obstinate psychopath? People with access to a free Internet have no excuse for their ignorance - it’s a choice - and that, to me, is stupidity.
Notwithstanding various disabilities, economic security, or any factors beyond one’s control, etc. of course.

The brain and mind aren't completely separate but nor are they the same thing. They are interdependent and both are able to change the other - most people easily accept that changes in the brain can cause changes in thinking, but we know with equal certainty that changes in thinking can produce changes in the brain. We also tend to think of the mind as being a product of the brain, but I don't think that's completely true - I think it's more accurate to think of the mind as an emergent property of a complex system that includes the brain but isn't limited to the brain.
