      Dafaq ?!?!?!? 🤨
      Jordan is such a long winded & boring arse, arrogant Fuck you can even see Alan falling asleep when he talks !!!!!! 😤
      I get why Jordan & Austin (who isn’t half as bad as Jordan) want to be all buddy buddy with Alan.... he is well respected, has a pre-existing RUclips audience & is fairly easily swayed by a logical argument (his ‘this is why Starting Strength sux’ Video is less than two years old... and now he’s certified to teach?!? 😓)....... but I don’t get why Alan keeps slobbering all over their balls.... they are boring, arrogant, talk down to everyone while also saying nothing new (they’re basically “RUclips Fitness Fakes” with Medical Degrees & an ‘entitled Rich White Male’ attitude).
      The quicker Barbell Medicine fails, the better. 🖕

    Hey Jordan - just so's you know, a Knight should be addressed by their First Name. So "Sir Alan" was correct; "Sir Thrall" was not. (OK, so i know Alan's knighthood hasn't come through yet, but it's only matter of time, given that Her Madge is such a big fan of RPE-based training and Death Metal)

    I’m really glad you “infidels” spoke out with clear science and math, to help people plan sanely. No one needs to reconcile themselves to the advice in Starting Strength (the Holy scripture) and fear going against “Uncle Rip” (Moses). The nutritional advice there seems mostly tailored to 15 year olds with the metabolism of a hamster. If you’re 40 you can gain strength and will increase in weight and mass, but it doesn’t take 4000 calories a day to sustain it. Since he also looks down on excessive cardio, many of his “disciples” may be on the road to diabetes or at least chronic insulin insensitivity. Once you eat the protein and carbs you need to maintain a slight surplus, your body will do what several million years evolved it to always do in the face of a surplus- store the rest as fat.

      Captain Obscurity he could at least go into a bit more detail about what to eat and when to eat. even if you are in a caloric deficit you can still gain fat and lose muscle mass. e.g. eat nothing during the day and a lb of sugar right before bed.

    • @craigowen1798
      @craigowen1798 6 лет назад +7

      Not sure you could eat a pound of sugar in addition to 1g protein per lb of body weight while staying in a caloric deficit, though.

    A huge problem jumping into this, is if you eat completely wild style with zero consistency and you want to change that habit keeping a food journal with the idea of starting while continuing on that path is not good. I mean like, zero consistency, one day eat way too much horrible shit, another day eat real food in sensible portions, another day no food just booze, another day maybe just one candy bar, then jumble that up in any order in any number of times. All I can say is I feel either minutes from deaths door or full of energy, no consistent sleep pattern, in fact working out makes it impossible to sleep. So what I'm getting at it, there should be a journal or channel or something of someone whose shit is totally fucked up trying to get it straight, maybe I could do that.

    So you can get stronger while losing weight. Can you get stronger and lose muscle at the same time? Or getting stronger is always an indicator of gaining muscle or at least not losing it?

    • @MrCmon113
      @MrCmon113 3 года назад

      The maximum amount of weight you can move in a certain way also depends on the composition of your muscles and nervous system. So, yes, you can have less muscle and be stronger in a lift that requires the muscle.

  • @jabberwock14
    @jabberwock14 4 года назад

    Other than increase is a muscle's cross sectional area, but what mechanism does strength increase? Saying this for the "getting stronger on a cut" part.

    If you’re in your LP but nearing the end (doing fives around 400 for BS and DL and 275 BP, 175 OHP), and carrying more fat than you’d like can you do “off-day” workouts to minimize the excess calories on those days you don’t train the main lifts?

    @Alan Thrall. Question. And this may sound dumb, I'm not sure. But twice in the video its mentioned that a 'decent starting point of Protein amount' is 1 Gram per pound. But the first time, he said Kilogram, and later in the video he said per pound. Can you clarify? Should I really be eating 185g of Protein? (185 lb guy). Or should I be eating 75g of protein (Since I probably weight like...75KG). I know this might be a novice question, but its truly something I've never had clarified. Thank you so much in advance.

    I understand that you can get stronger and lose body fat at the same time when you are cutting. But do you get stronger faster when you are bulking than when you are cutting? Even when the protein intake is the same?

    • @hooplehead1019
      @hooplehead1019 6 лет назад +2

      It depends on many factors, but it tends to be more effective, yes. Strength can be improved by different pathways, and while "skill" doesnt depend much on calorie conditions, "hypertrophy", which provides the potential for more strength, does. Training level, BF%, training play a large role, though: The novice overweight lifter can probably gain a good portion of the strength in a slight deficit of what he could in a surplus, while its very much different in an advanced ripped lifter.

  • @fliptop555
    @fliptop555 6 лет назад +5

    I'm a bit overweight and I tried to cut my calories just a bit and i couldn't lift what I was during the starting strength. How the heck do I keep my gains going when cutting to lose my extra weight

    • @gottfriedosterbach3907
      @gottfriedosterbach3907 6 лет назад +4

      felipe esquivel You might either want to give it some time and see or shift your intake to make sure you have energy for training. If you are just cutting a little you might consider just adding more conditioning. I love hate doing giant sets Alsruhe style, but you will improve far faster in many ways and improve your work capacity. If it has just been less than a few weeks you probably are being a little preemptive and you should see if your strength levels balance out. It often does after a little while and if you can improve your health you will be a step ahead. Better work capacity usually leads to improved strength gains long term. You can use this as an opportunity for more than just shedding a few pounds of excess.

      Some of it is physical, some of it is mental. You aren't used to it yet for the physical part, but for the mental part... for me it was that I didn't think I'd have the energy for it, so I didn't. Once I got past that, it wasn't so bad. I also go to the gym (generally) in a fasted state, because intermittent fasting and I usually go right after work. I'm also a fatty, so I might have more reserves to work from, lol :D

    Should I cut if im a teenager? Serious question. Im bulking right now, and i’ve been doing it for a year. The thing is that i dont want to get obese at some point, but yet I dont want to negatively affect my hormones levels nor growth. What should I do? Keep bulking till im ~25yo, or cut at some point during this ‘phase’?

    A lot of strength coaches - Jordan Feigenbaum included - always say that body recomp (eating at maintenance and gaining muscle + burning fat) is impossible. Yet the same coaches will say "oh yeah, getting stronger on a cut is absolutely possible, no question". Well it can't be both, can it? If it's possible to get stronger while on a caloric deficit, then why wouldn't it be possible to get stronger eating at maintenance? I'm not saying it is, because I haven't tried. I'd just like to understand the logic.
    Also, a question the video fails to address and really the only reason I came here: If we want to gain weight, we have to go into a caloric surplus. Okay - but how big of a surplus? 100 calories? 500? So many different opinions on this and I came to hear Jordans.

    Not trying to be the troll but the only real research I've seen on protein intake shows that for an athletic adult male the most protein the body can synthesize is somehwere between .6-.7 grams per lb of body weight. It's just easier to say "oh 1 gram per lb!" but reality usually isn't that convenient

    • @bearmanpig1568
      @bearmanpig1568 5 лет назад

      Its a smart goal as having .3 g per lb of protein more than you technically need is better then not getting enough.

  • @pauljsharp1
    @pauljsharp1 6 лет назад

    Is it 1gm per kilo body weight of protein or 1gm per pound? I am 180lbs 1gm/lb would put me at 180gms of protein a day... Seems unsustainable. However, I am approximately 80kg so 80gm of protein seems reasonable.

    • @mysza456
      @mysza456 6 лет назад

      The answer is in the video. 1g/lb or 2-3g/kg.

    • @pauljsharp1

    • @mysza456
      @mysza456 6 лет назад

      Yep, and both are correct. 1 g/lb is 180g for your weight and 2-3g/kg is 160-240g. But personally I think it's a little overkill, something like 1,6g/kg should work just fine during bulk (130g for your weight).

      MisterTForU Glad you can get the best of both worlds. Also remember to workout as much as possible without your body crashing. I know dozens of people at my gym who follow all these "special" programs and wonder why they see no progress. Humans in nature would constantly be doing shit not just 1 hour a day. For example everyday do x amount of chinups so that is a normal and easy activity for your body, then hit the gym. But hey this is broscience from some random trainer. ATB.

    The boys are back in town!
    I’ve got a more specific question.
    What 3 days should we be logging for our journal/log (training or non-training days)?
    Should these days be the same every week?
    By the way, you guys are outstanding. Keep it going!

    calories in, calories out, relevant to your TDEE. to calculate this and your macros, use this calculator and track against it in MyFitnessPal- www.muscleforlife.com/macronutrient-calculator/

    Weight gain is not the same as muscle gain. Carbs will make you gain weight not muscle mass. I’m on a high fat and extremely low carb diet regiment and I’ve put on 20lbs of muscle and lost 40lbs of fat. I do strength training 5 days a week. I will eventually add more carbs to my diet when I want to start rounding out a bit and not be so lean, that’s what carbs are good for, adding fat. Healthy fats provide more energy and are healthier than carbs. Anyone who has eaten a plate a pasta will testify that they are immediately sleepy afterwards, but you can eat a steak, 4 eggs, and 12oz of a lean protein shake and not be tired or sluggish afterwards. Everyone is different but this works for me.

      Your diet will not work for everyone. Also, excessive calories, whether they come from carbohydrates, protein, or fat, may lead to an increase in the size of body fat deposits.

    Lol that 2.1-31.g of protein/Kg of bodyweight was for athletes dieting down.
    Someone bulking does not need anywhere near that amount of protein and the satiating effects may hinder their bulk.

    • @BarbellMedicine
      @BarbellMedicine 6 лет назад +3

      Meh, that hasn't been shown in the literature, rather there is a trend to higher amounts of muscle mass with higher protein intakes and no evidence it prevents weight gain. Further, within the study referenced they discuss athletes gaining weight and protein requirements multiple times. The recommendation stands, in my opinion.

      1 gram per lb of body weight is too much. 0.6g is enough. Too much protein will kill your kidneys. Not worth it, even if more protein does give some tiny advantage.

    • @BarbellMedicine
      @BarbellMedicine 6 лет назад +5

      No, it really isn't. Read the whole paper. Again, the recommendation 1g/lb could be modified to be 1g/lb LBM, but it's still very reasonable. Vitamin B is off base here, obviously

      okay then
      Also remember you said to eat that much protein for the people bulking, not people dieting down lol.
