- The continued appearance of giant unidentified lifeforms known as "S-Class Species" has become commonplace in Japan. Conventional weapons have no effect on them. Having exhausted all other options, the Japanese Government issued the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol and formed an enforcement unit, known as the SSSP. The members chosen for the unit are: Leader Fumio Tamura (played by Hidetoshi Nishijima), Executive Strategist Shinji Kaminaga (played by Takumi Saitoh), Unparticle Physicist Taki Akihisa (played by Daiki Arioka), and Universal Biologist Yume Funaberi (Akari Hayami) As the threat of S-Class Species worsens, a silver giant appears from beyond Earth's atmosphere. Analyst Hiroko Asami (played by Masami Nagasawa) is newly appointed to the SSSP to deal with this giant and is partnered with Shinji Kaminaga. In Hiroko's report, she writes... "Ultraman (tentative name), identity unknown".

Shin Ultraman (シン・ウルトラマン, Shin Urutoraman) is a 2022 Japanese superhero kaiju film directed by Shinji Higuchi and written, co-produced, and co-edited by Hideaki Anno. A reimagining of Ultraman, the film is a co-production between Toho Studios and Cine Bazar, and presented by Tsuburaya Productions, Toho Co., Ltd., and Khara, Inc. It is the 37th film in the Ultraman franchise, and the second reboot of a tokusatsu series to be adapted by Anno and Higuchi, after Shin Godzilla, with Shin Kamen Rider to follow in 2023. The film stars Takumi Saitoh, Masami Nagasawa, Daiki Arioka, Akari Hayami, Tetsushi Tanaka, and Hidetoshi Nishijima, with Anno and Bin Furuya as Ultraman. In the film, an extraterrestrial accidentally kills a man while battling a kaiju and takes on his appearance and place at the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol to protect Earth from further threats.

Just watched it... It's a fun watch. I love that the CGI Ultraman still flies like a wooden dowel being pulled by a string.
very true lol
I noticed that. Love it
Even with CGI, the directors really wanted to give it the same feel as suitmation, and I find that admirable due to how it allows to emphasize how "alien" Ultraman truly is.
I think the idea of not one but two aliens being more readily accepted by Japan's leaders is a joke about how stoic Ultraman is. He doesn't utter a sound, slowly turns his head and creepily stares at an onlooker before flying off. Zarab and Mefilas outright start communicating with us. It being a stealth joke is my head canon lol
Zarab and Mefilas can view as a mysterious god being since god and alien are something human can't touch or know
So quickly accepting them is actually the most realistic way to prevent severe damage they can bring
This was awesome! An entire series on the Super Sentai/Ultraman/Godzilla would be awesome! Something like Talks from The Darkside.
Oh man this is so cool! Huge fan of Ultraman and Tokusatsu. Loved that all the Kaiju shown at the beginning were from Ultra Q, and all the other easter eggs. Just an incredible movie. This is the first I've seen of the "Shin" movies and now I'm even more hyped for Shin Kamen Rider. You guys gotta cover the new Super Sentai series and more tokusatsu shows whether that's on Pateron or not, I'm down.
JOOOOOO! I friggin‘ loved it. It has the exact right amount of weird, and the Action is spot-on. Can‘t wait to check out Shin Kamen Rider when it comes out.
The special FX & scale in this movie is very admirable considering Shin Ultraman only has 1/3 of Shin Godzilla's budget. And Shin Godzilla's budget is already pretty cheap around 1/10 of Godzilla 2014 budget. Imagine all the limitations the team behind Shin Ultraman had to face 😮.
Also, Color Timer-less Ultraman was actually the original design of Ultraman during the conceptual stage before they eventually added the timer in the 1966 show.
Still, very fun review, guys. Thanx 👍
Didn’t realize about the budget and that’s pretty incredible! Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
I took my nephew to this and "AVATAR 2" was screening in the other auditorium right next to it. In fact, the ticket guy even pointed us to the theater it was playing in.... I made the right decision. No no friend, I'm seeing Kaiju not whatever this "Avatar 2" is
@@scottneil1187 to teach my young lad about how to be cool.... We snuck into 5 mins of Avatar because I'm an effects guy who wanted to see the "upgrades"
It looks exactly the same. 5 mins were all I or anyone else needed
Loved Shin Godzilla and was lucky to see that in theaters. Missed this in theaters but excited to see it soon. From what I've seen the Shin series is doing a great job modernizing these franchises and making interesting stories filled with great characters. Big fan of the Shin Godzilla score by Shirō Sagisu who also worked on Evangelion.
Great episode guys! Looking forward to Dan and Angela making me watch this for an episode. 🤣
The visual references of the kappa sequence gave me an idea of fonzi bear going to japan and having series of misunderstandings resulting in a hilarious slideshow presentation to kermit to kermit and the gang appropriately ruined by a light blinded "kaiju like" ms piggy interruption. Wawaru vs waka-waka. Really enjoying your reviews.
Thanks for watching! Waka waka! 🙏💚📼
I had no idea these were on tubi... as soon as you said that I imediatly saved gridman to my list!
Can't wait guys! I never grew up with Ultraman but I know it inspired power rangers, which I loved as a kid!
I watched this when I was a little kid and also had Space Giants and Spectreman . I honestly thought that Rangers was Space Giants rip off but without giant kaiju. There are superficial similarities I can point out. A . Both feature flamboyant evil big bads,Giants was male Rangers female. B. Both had a character subset of minions that existed to provide fight scenes, Giants had guys with black nylon covering their faces and melting into goo when killed,Rangers had the Putty Patrol. But Rodak didn't just send out a small monster to eventually have it sized up later. When he sent a kaiju it was a DEI KAIJU-immediatley destroying its surroundings like a Godzilla movie. He'd also infkect viral epidemics on Japan's populace, varying from ones that cause mold to instantly grow on victims faces and another having victims skin going literally blue.
A great intro to a great review
I started watching your channel not too long ago because I've been seeing you on Hack the Movies, and this random video starts playing and I get to learn Joe is a huge Toku fan?!?! Please review Sentai and Rider! I started watching at Zenkaiger and it all hooked me in. Obvi started with Mmpr when I was 7, but fell off when I got older until just recently. Wow awesome stuff!
Thanks for giving us a chance and we’re glad you’re enjoying the content! 🙏💚📼
Great stuff, enjoyed it thoroughly !
Thank you so much! We’re glad you enjoyed the show! 🙏💚📼
Didn’t know that joe was a Tokusatsu fan
I missed it in the theater, but I'd love to pick it up on video. I could listen to Joe talk about kaiju all day.
As a kid born in 1982 I was a huge fan of sci anime. Ultraman, robotech, starzinger , Galaxy Express 999
I got to see this in a theater, amazing. As soon as I saw Shin Gomess I knew it was gonna be good. And yeah Gomess was in fact a heavily modified godzilla suit.
Great stuff,guys!
Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
Ultraman did it before Mechagodzilla. Imitation Ultraman episode aired in 1966. Mechagodzilla released in 1973.
There ya go!
Hi,love the Movie Dumpster, big fan of Godzilla,Gamera, and starting to get more into Ultraman. I own the original series and I'm almost finished with Ultraseven. I cant wait to watch this movie, loved Shin Godzilla
Went to the local(ish) Fathom showing of this, which I probably would've missed if I hadn't heard you mention it before, with my folks who are also fans. We liked it. I would much, much prefer practical effects (suits), but it looked good and was enjoyable. That said, I thought they crammed a bit too much in it and it was longer than it needed to be. I dug Shin Godzilla more.
Shin Ultraman's lack of a color timer on his chest is indeed an homage to the original Ultraman design by Tohl Narita, where he doesn't have a color timer. :)
I know very little about sentai, tokusatsu and kaiju(beside what was covered on Castzilla and the podmonster) so i am all for reviewing classic and/or newish shows! This movie looks fantastic
Best intro ever!!!
Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
@@MovieDumpster the only thing that could have topped that intro was if the female announcer from Pride Fighting Championships did the intro. 😆 🤘
I remember the first film in the Godzilla franchise my dad showed me. The 74 version of Godzilla vs Mecha Godzilla. I've loved these kinda shows/movies since. Even to this day I have a fond memory of the original Power Rangers show and my dad telling me about how it was called Super Sentai in Japan.
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla was my first Godzilla movie I can remember! Top 5 if not my fav. -Joe
We need a Super Inframan episode now!!🎉
Great review. I would love for y'all to cover the Kamen Rider series.
Thanks for watching and we’re glad you enjoyed it! 🙏💚📼
What Ultraman movies would you recommend? Just went through Tubi and had no clue there were this many films.
To be honest, I haven’t seen much new Ultraman. And I think all the older movies are just mostly compilation stuff that showed in theaters along other Kaiju Toho releases. -Joe
At the very end of the movie what actually happens is that ultraman sacrifices his life so that kaminaga can keep on living, in direct contrast to the original where both ultraman and hayata got to be saved by zoffy after the final battle
Fun discussion guys.
Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
I didn't really understand it
Shaun-kun is now canon to the MDU
Love to see a ultraman show. That sounds awesome
So why is Joanna on here, isn't she a Kaiju movie fan lads, either way love that you do alot of different type of film 😁
Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
I enjoyed Godzillas as a kid. I enjoyed Superhuman Syber Squad which was my only exposure to an Ultraman show for a while. Later I delved into Japanese Sentai and its recycled Power Rangers series eventually. I've dug into Kamen Rider. Ultraman remains a blindspot for me. I need to learn more about those series. I do enjoy Tokusatsu.
Here's my recommendation
Ultra Q,OG 1966,Seven and Return of Ultraman
Just wondering, will you be doing a ripe review of Cocaine Bear. I just watched it and it is a great, fun movie. It plays out like a slasher, kind of Jaws meets Friday the 13th. There is no reason they can't make a franchise out of this.
It’s coming soon and we’re gonna have special guest Tony from Hack the Movies on to talk about it!
Great episode. It's lots of fun checking out movies i haven't seen before. I can't help but feel like movies like this inspired the Power Rangers tv show / phenomenom of the 90's.
By the way, seeing your both huge fans of the original Ghostbusters, there is a great movie length documentary from 2019 called Cleanin Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters, if you want to check it out.
Power Rangers is actually based on the Super Sentai series!
Good review, I would be interested into hearing you guys talk about Jackie Chan is The Protector. I watch like over 40 Martial Arts movies in February and that one stuck out to me just because of how unJackie Chan it is. Hes telling people to give him their fucking keys, blowing people away with guns. Just a weird movie.
Also I would totally get the pateron just to hear you guys talk about KingOhger (the new sentai)
More Kaiju stuff please! I gotta see what yall think of Godzilla: Final Wars.
Final Wars is a blast!
I need some Sentai series coverage! Do it!
It’s weird that my generation grew up watching shows like Ultraman and Johnny Sokko that were basically the Japanese shows ported over and dubbed. We knew the shows were Japanese and didn’t care, but after Power Rangers all the shows were brought over and completely stripped of anything Japanese so that you couldn’t tell.
Which is a shame because the Sentai series is so damn good.
“And I’m Sean kun I guess” 😂
thank you so much for making this a normal episode, I absolutely loved this movie!
I haven’t gotten around to Shin Kamen Rider, yet. It’s only been 4 days, but I’m busy moving.
Hoping they do a Fathom Events for it like this movie and Shin Godzilla before it! 🤞
Well in og Kamen rider it's only one till the actor broke a leg then they got a second Kamen till the og actor recovered but they kept the second one usually old kame rider series there's only 1
Joe if you haven't watched if yet Fuutu PI is an awesome Kamen Rider W anime from last year
I gotta check it out! -Joe
Fuuto PI was pretty good
I want to see more about sentai series
Damn we only have the chupacabras here
What does "shin" mean in Japanese?
the area above the foot but below the knee
It means a few different things- “new” and “true” among them.
Gameraaaaaaaa (mst3k voice)
Showa -> Shower XDD
Heisei -> High sigh XDD
Do jetman
Shin kamen rider dissapointed me. Kamen rider amazon, and kamen rider black sun were awesome.
